Jay Bouwmeester signed by Calgary Flames
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on June 30th, 2009
The defenceman avoided unrestricted free agency by agreeing to a five-year deal worth $6.6 million per year against the salary cap on Tuesday night.(source:TSN)
Hats off to GM Darryl Sutter for taking the chance, trading Jordan Leopold and a third round pick (67th) at the draft to acquire the exclusive negotiating rights to try to sign Jay Bouwmeester before the July 1st. deadline. It took some guts to risk it but to the bold go the spoils.
Flames Sign Jay Bouwmeester
Posted by Jeff Gilroy in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on June 30th, 2009
- TSN is reporting 5 years, at $6.6mm per year. This should set him up well for another big contract at the peak age of 30 years old. Nice move by Calgary, but he needs to develop to prove he is worth that kind of annual salary. Its a shame the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreeement…takes such a fine young talent away from the Panthers at the age of 25.
Marian Gaborik will test free agency
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 30th, 2009
It appears that the Minnesota Wild will not be offering a contract to the often injured superstar. Marion Gaborik, the team’s top pick in its inaugural draft, is the last remaining original franchise member and its career scoring leader with 219 goals and 437 points. In 2007-08, he set single-season franchise and career marks with 42 goals and 83 points.
The flip side, of course, is the right wing’s injury problems. He has played just one full season since 2002-03, last year missing 63 games because of groin and hip injuries. Over the past year, he has had both hips surgically repaired.
The last procedure was in January, when surgeon Marc Philippon told him the procedure had a 93 percent chance to eradicate his chronic groin problems. Gaborik came back with 11 games left in the season and scored 10 goals as the Wild went 7-3-1. (source:TwinCities.com)
Jonas Gustavsson will wait for July 1st.
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 30th, 2009
It looks like The “Monster” Jonas Gustavsson, the big Swedish Goaltender is widely regarded as the best goaltender outside the NHL, will wait for July 1st. and the free agency period before deciding where he will call home next season.
The North American agent for Swedish free-agent netminder, Joe Resnick, told TSN “It’s been a hectic and busy time for Jonas, With his mother passing away recently, he really just needs some time to take stock of things. There’s no point in rushing into a decision. All we know at this point is his decision will come after July 1.”
Marian Hossa will not return to Detroit
Posted by Jeff Gilroy in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 30th, 2009
- Ken Holland tells EJ Hradek that he is “Not optimistic that Marian Hossa will remain in Detroit”. Hradek thinks the LA Kings will make a serious play for Hossa, and dont forget the offer Edmonton made last summer.
Sedins in Toronto?
Posted by Jeff Gilroy in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 30th, 2009
- On the Fan 590′s Bob McCown show this afternoon in Toronto, Ron Wilson let it slip that Maple Leafs will pursue the Sedin’s this off season. In what could easily be percieved as ‘tampering’ had it come a week ago, Wilson suggested it was a certainty that the Leafs would chase the two Sedins.
New Jersey Devils Re-Sign Johnny Oduya

- No terms announced yet, but a great move to keep such a solid young building block in Jersey.

- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, is reporting that Tampa Bay has taken Vincent Lecavalier off the market. Finally, a wise decision coming from Tampa ownership.
Scott Gomez Trade to Montreal
Posted by Jeff Gilroy in NHL News, NHL Trades on June 30th, 2009
- Two sources are reporting the trade as: Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt, and Mike Busto (both fringe prospects at best) for F Chris Higgins, D Ryan McDonagh (Montreal’s 1st Round Pick in 2007) and D Pavel Valentenko. Though Higgins star has dimmed (and I’m not a fan), that GM Sather was able to move Gomez for Cap Space and two young defensemen is a revelation. Not to mention, McDonagh now likely becomes NY’s top prospect. It’s a wise move that corrects a rather large mistake Sather made two years ago. I love Gomez as a player, but he is a $3.5mm player with a $7.2mm long term contract. I am starting to believe the Habs fans…that Gainey might not be the right man to rebuild this team.
Mike Komisarek Not Resigning with Canadiens Before the deadline.
Posted by Jeff Gilroy in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 30th, 2009
- According to The Fan590 in Toronto: Mike Komisarek will test the market place on July 1st, leaving the door open to resign with Montreal after July 1st. Also reported on TSN.
