Toronto Maple Leafs to Trade Two Defencemen

  • On the Fan590 this afternoon, Brian Burke told the Toronto viewers that he plans to trade two defencemen before the season starts. “We have 10 NHL caliber defencemen, and we’ll trade two before the season begins.” Burke told Bob McCown this afternoon. That ensures Tomas Kaberle will be playing in a new uniform, given that Schenn, Beauchemin, Komisarek, Finger and Van Ryan are going no where. I would expect one of Ian White, Anton Stralmen or the newly acquired Garnet Exelby to be the other. Jonas Frogren has little or no value outside of Toronto.

I agree hope they keep Ian White he can be valuable at forward. He has good hockey sense and could adjust.Besides injuries happen.I also hope they will move ethier Finger or VanRyn their
is a market for them.Burke has done a great job so far.Coltan Orr is over paid though.

Keep Kabrele, Stralman and Ian White. Trade Van Ryn, Finger, and possibly Exelby. I think Kabrele is way to valuable for the team to lose. I also think White and Stralman will be top caliber defencemen soon. Although i would like to see Toronto keep Stralman theres just to many good defencemen on the team, he could fetch something decent if he was include in a package

    Kabrele Komisarek
    Beauchemin Schenn
    White Van Ryn/ Exelby

They could also send Frogren, Stralman to the minors before the season starts

Unless you can get offensive help otherwise Kaberle has a target on his back.Just wish the Jeff
Carter trade happened last year. Also Sundin,Tucker,Kubina,we would have had an even stonger position at last draft.Oh well,Tucker
is not wanted in Colorado.Sundin good luck getting the same money.Kubina hope you like Atlanta when you could have been is San Jose.
    Its karma boys.

Are you kidding me the leafs wanted exelby last year and now they might trade him. He is one of the only guys in the nhl that chages the game. By this i mean forwords think twice about cutting through center ice when X is out there as they now they may be in the trolly tracks and will end up with an X on there four head. You do not trade for a player like this just to trade him. As well they publicly stated they were after him last year.

How does Burke’s statement ensure that Kaberle is traded?

In my opinion the leafs will do fine offensively….

Blake will likely put up 30+ goals 30+ assists, same with Hagman. Poni will be around 25+ goals. Grabovski and Kulemin will put up even better numbers than last year. Stempniak will have adjusted to the team. Bozak and Wallin could be good and even Kadri if he makes the leafs roster.

You dont need to trade your best defenceman. Trade others to get some decent forwards. Wait till next free agency to get the BIG name players. They had no prob last year with scoring goals.

I don’t think Burke needs to do a lot at this time.

He has put together a tough veteran defence while keeping players like Kaberle and Van Ryn who can move the puck and play point on powerplay.

I say let see what the kids can do up front. If by the trade deadline they are in the playoffs there will be veteran forwards available then and if they’re out of the playoffs they have some players on defence they can dump for more draft picks.

Meantime, if someone offers a skilled forward in a deal that is too good to turn down, great. If not, no big deal.

Don’t forget strong chance the cap goes down
5th -6th d-man making 3-4 mil a piece.Plus the monster rate will go up as well. This team needs
offence that what Burke is saying. Our depth is defense you have to give to get. Kaberle won’t be giving away.Burke will do whats right. He will
improve this team even more.We have not had this tyoe of personel since Fletcher and Burns.

From what I see people want Stralman to play.
Here’s the problem if we send him to the minors
we risk losing him on waivers. Then we get nothing for him like Kronwall last year.I like Stralman but he nees to learn at the N.H.L level he maybe our next Kaberle. There’s enough toughness to help is skill along.I remember when we drafted him scouts were comparing him to Linstrom. He was a kid playing in the Swedish elete league not looking out of place.Free up a spot and let this kid loose.

I agree with you about stralman but, He wont make the line up unless some more players are traded

Players including Kabrele, Komisarek, Beauchimin Schenn,Van Ryn, Exelby, White will all get a roster spot before him unless he amazes this training camp. Two of those players will have to be traded for him to get a spot. Then they still have Finger and Frogren to deal with.

Although i think he is a great player and will be a even greater player in the future, he doesnt have much of a chance of making the line up.

If they send him to the minors before the season starts he wont need to go through waivers. Thats how Mark Bell got in the Marlies without being picked up until the leafs tried to call him up.

Bad trade We give youth for a 33 year old 3rd liner at best. I hope Stralman gets a chance.Give up on talking toughness were going to have to add talent at some point. We could have signed that same type player. At least we got a second rounder. Maybe we should have gave the 1st rounder for Kessel at least he puts the puck in the net. You don’t rebuild with a 33 yaer old 3rd or 4th liner.

Just a thought what about Kaberle converting to center.Wendal Clarke was a defenseman,Kaberle is a hell of a passer and would also play stong in our own end.
