Would the Oilers trade their top pick? Duchense Injured … Oilers to buyout Moreau?

  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Say what you want about Cox’s idea’s …. Would Boston and Calgary go for a Jarome Iginla and the Leafs 1st round pick trade? Would the Oilers consider trading down if someone would take a bad contract? Horcoff, Penner, Souray, Gilbert, Hemsky, and Khabibulin almost take up half their salary cap.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche rookie and potential Calder winner, Matt Duchense, sustained a ‘torso injury’ in the  5-2 loss to the Blackhawks. Duchense went to the hospital for further evaluation.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: There is the possibility that the Oilers will buy out Ethan Moreau after the season. Moreau will be 35 at training camp next fall, and has one your left at $2 million. They will continue to try and trade him, but a buyout may be the last resort.

I think the Oilers select Taylor Hall. Realistically, they could run next year with:

    (1) Hemsky/Gagner/Penner
    (2/3) MPS/Horcoff/Hall
    (3/2) Moreau/Eberle/O’Sullivan

They have Riley Nash coming as well, and need to figure out what to do with Cogliano. They should play the kids, and accept the fact that they will have another top 3 pick in next year’s draft. That is the correct way to rebuild this club.

Additionally, the Oiler mafia should forget about buying players out to free up money, and look to player development (and not free agency) to fix this thing. Sounds like both Alberta clubs need some fresh new management and direction.

I think they’ll take Seguin and buyout Moreau if they can’t find a trade partner. But I think they should be able to find someone who would be okay with Moreau for one year, with the option of trading him at the deadline.
