Matt Cooke hits Fedor Tyutin from Behind, suspension likely

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke is back in the headlines, and as usual, not for anything good. Last night he hit Fedor Tyutin from behind, and was assessed a 5 minute major. The league will definitely be looking at this hit today. Check out the video, let us know what you think of it and how many games do you think he’ll get?

Anyone else would get 2-3 games for this, but considering it’s Cooke I’ll guess the NHL cracks down a little harder, maybe 4-5.

It’s just not a coincidence anymore; I’ve been willing to give Cooke the BOTD up to this point, but he hasn’t done anything to make me think he isn’t a dirty player. It’s unfortunate, because he’s a good 3rd line/4th line grinder who brings a TON of energy, if he could stop getting suspended he could be a VITAL role player for the Pens… Instead, enjoy the press box dude.

I’m an old school Pens fan, but this kinda cr@p has to stop. A sporting league is only as good as the product they put on the ice! Players are missing time due to cheep shots like this one. That being said I do like what Cook brings to the team.

Just because this is not his first, second or even third time engaging in these type of antics i’d give him 5-6 games and in the future I’d penalize the team the roster spot as well for the duration of the suspension!!

As a repeat offender, I strongly feel he should get a 40 games suspension. He destroyed Lecavalier’s career. Destroyed Savard’s career (and brain), attempted to destroy Ovechkin’s knee, and now this … I’s certain I’m forgetting a dozen or so other incidents

    I’m thinking maybe 3 games.

Would be more if Tyutin was injured on the play. Which by the way should have no relevance in determining a suspension in my opinion. Most of the time the players are lucky they are not injured. Should be based on the act, not the act plus result.

Name slips my mind — what was the name of the defenceman that was always accused of going low and taking guys out at the knees?

I’m a diehard Penguins fan, but this guy needs to go. Seems every other day he is doing something like this. Get rid of this BUM!

    - Is that Milbury commentating?
    - “Oh Babbbbiee”
    - Go get him Pierre!
    - What was Pronger doing btw?

I think Matt Cooke is dirty, but when you look at the replay, Tyutin totally saw him coming and turned his back on him. That’s drawing a penalty; he wasn’t injured on the play which makes me suspect that even more. Not saying what Cooke did was right, but c’mon lets call a spade a spade here.

    Jeff …

    Davidson

Don’t think Pronger had any idea Gartner came out of the box.

God I hate hometown announcers. There aren’t “two ways of looking at it.” Sure, he turned his back- so he could use his backhand. Cook had ample time to hold up and HE LEFT HIS FEET.

The guy’s actually a good hockey player, I don’t understand why he has to be a scum bag too. You can play with an edge without being a f$%!ing idot.

Campbell will look the other way
Cooke should have been suspended for going after Ovie’s knee

The Penguins have by far the WORST announcer I have ever heard, just pathetic announcing. That said, dirty hit. Didn’t leave his feet until after contact, didn’t throw himself into him or extend arms, but it is an up and down boarding call. Since he is a repeat offender, 5 games.

As a long time pee wee hockey coach and a pro hitting in minor hockey backer, this type of play must stop. Any good coach of young hockey players teaches them to use their body to protect the puck. This does not give the opposition the right to try and send a player through the boards. There is a proper way to defend a player using his body to protect the puck and this is not it. I teach hard physical hockey but not dirty hockey. There is a big difference but the NHL lack of disappline is clouding the lines. No wonder the cry for hitting in minor hockey to be removed is getting stronger when this type of play is acceptable at the ultimate goal. This garbage is ruining a great part of the game
