Sunday morning NHL rumor roundup and injury report

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The asking price for either Bobby Ryan or Ryan Getzlaf will be huge. A league executive said they want 2 high-end prospects and 2 1st round draft picks. For the Maple Leafs it would likely cost Joe Colborne and Nazem Kadri plus the draft picks. Garrioch thinks that Getzlaf makes more sense for the Leafs, but not to be surprised if they trade for Ryan. Many people are waiting to see what ball falls first, Blue GM Scott Howson, coach Scott Arniel or Rick Nash. Many think it’s time to ask Rick Nash to waive his no movement clause. There have been no talks between Hal Gill and the Canadiens, and he’ll likely be dealt by the trade deadline. The Blues are looking for help along the blueline. The Lightning are looking for a goaltender. Though it’s being denied by the Sharks, they are willing to discuss Antti Niemi or Antero Niittymaki. Jonathan Bernier could be an option for the Lightning, as well as Wild Josh Harding. They’ve spoken to the Canucks about Cory Schneider but he isn’t going anywhere. Islanders center Frans Nielsen will be a UFA at the end of the season and could be looking for more than $3 million a season. Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is shopping all of his UFAs: C Tuomo Ruutu, LW Alexei Ponikarovsky, D Bryan Allen, D Jaroslav Spacek and D Tim Gleason. They were also looking to move Joni Pitkanen before he had knee surgery. The Sharks may have interest in Gleason or Spacek. Look for Bob Hartley to be the coach of the Flames next year. The Blue Jackets are trying to trade Antoine Vermette and the Oilers are still trying to trade Ales Hemsky.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher is not looking for “short-term, quick fixes.”

“If we do anything, preferably it would be something that makes sense for at least a couple years,” he said Friday. “We have a lot of [prospects] coming that I think will be able to play. It’s exciting what we’re trying to grow here, so I don’t think I’m in a hurry to dismantle a lot of what we’re trying to build. But you look at everything.”

The Wild would likely be interested in Zach Parise, but more during free agency than through trade. The Wild have lots of defenseman and are rich in goaltending.

  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson injured his hand during the 1st period and didn’t return. His status will be updated today.
  • Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Mike Green didn’t finish last night’s game as he was experiencing tightness in his groin.
  • Calgary Herald: The Flames now have 8 players injured with Brendan Morrison and Scott Hannan going down with an injury. Defenseman Mark Giordano shot pucks during their morning skate. When he’ll return from his hamstring tear is still not known.

Does Garrich seriously think Doug Wilson would be dumb enough to trade Antti Niemi . Granted Wilson has a history of making bad trades at the deadline. But even he would not trade Niemi. And why would anyone but Wilson himself want an oft-injured goalie who has not played in an NHL game in almost 1 year. The only goalie that the Sharks have is a marginal back up goalie in Tomas Griess and they would be lucky to get a 5th round pick for him.

  2. #2 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

Ya that’s what the Flames should do fire another head coach and keep the” Core”…
God it’s hard being a Flames fan!!!

  3. #3 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

Colborne, Schenn plus a 1st should do it for Getzlaf….

  4. #4 by Wunschkind89 at January 8th, 2012

    @Dave

As a Leaf fan, I’d do that trade. Schenn really isn’t that spectacular, and Aulie is basically his cheaper clone.

That being said, they may want more.

  5. #5 by AJ at January 8th, 2012

    Dave, you’re wrong.
Getzlaf had 6 good/great seasons and a cup + a bad half-season. That doesn’t make him cheaper. He’s a No.1 center and even if the demand would not be sky-high (which it actually is) for a type of player he is, it won’t be enough, what you suggest. Burke would bring down the heavens for a player like him, because A) he’s just his kind of player, B) he’s just what TOR needs.

  6. #6 by AJ at January 8th, 2012

Having said that, Burke should not settle for Schenn in a Getzlaf deal, he should go for Phaneuf or Kessel. Hence, it’s never gonna happen.

  7. #7 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

Schenn in the deal would a be a compromise to two 1st’s plus 2 former 1st’s in Colborne and Kadri and would solve everyone’s problems at the same time. Every Duck fan you talk to lights up at the prospect of a big strong physical shut down D-Man on their team and vice versa with the Leafs and a big strong physical and talented Center. Not to mention saving Burke’s public image at the thought of giving up another two 1st round picks in a trade for a proven talent, regardless of how talented Getzy really is. Especially having everybody relive the trade over and over again like the Kessel trade with the Toronto media.

  8. #8 by Darryl at January 8th, 2012

Wow, Dave sounds like a typical delusional Leafs fan.

Getzlaf is a top 5 center in this league, half a bad season doesnt change that.

  9. #9 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

    @ Darryl

Schenn was a top 5 pick and has one of the highest defensive ceiling’s in the game with his size, leadership and skillset (and maybe not even available if Burke sticks to his word). Colborne is a point per game 6’5 C in the AHL and a former 1st round pick (do a history research on the amount of players that were a ppg in the AHL and the amount of elite NHL players that didn’t even achieve that mark) plus an actual 1st round pick. That’s the equivelent to 3 1st’s witout giving up anything else, plus dropping salary. That’s more than an adequate return for Getzlaf, who do u think this is Grezky or Lemieux where u should get the equivelent of 4 1st round picks or more, plus giving up no salary in return (even though the Leafs can afford it)? The Flyers proved last yr that elite players don’t get traded because u never get what u gave up, and if you do it’s not right away it’s in prospects and younger talent who produce later on.

  10. #10 by AJ at January 8th, 2012

Getzlaf is an elite center, a franchise player, theres a huge demand and a low support of those players, and he has the most cap and purse friendly contracts of them all for his value.
Hell yes hes worth 4 1st rounders, no question. Hes well worth a 7+ mill contract and even the league compensation for that caliber (see RFAs) is 4 1st rounders btw.

  11. #11 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

If Getzlaf was that good AJ he could carry the team through the playoffs by himself, and he hasn’t even been able to get them to the playoffs this year. Especially with the league MVP from last yr on 1 wing (Perry) and one of the leagues premier power forwards on the other wing (Ryan). If you were the Ducks GM would you be comfortable going into next yr with the same group and relying solely on your stars fixing something they obviously don’t know how to fix (or they would have done it already) and the internal development of prospects and young players? Like the Oilers are finding out, defense and healthy balance of scoring/grit/experience wins championships, not just the team with the most offensive firepower. And with a legit bunch of prospects and young players coming together at the same time for the Ducks (E.Etam, C.Fowler, D. Smith-Pelly, L.Sbisa, K.Palmieri, J.Schultz etc) wouldn’t you want to add the highest draft pick possible if you’re already out of the playoffs this yr? Plus combine that with a return for Getzlaf (Luke Schenn, Joe Colborne and a 1st round pick this yr) add that with what’s left of the current core of Bobby Ryan, Cory Perry and Hiller and you’ve got the makings of a competetive team again in 2, 3 years at the most. And all Anaheim will have to do is trade one player to do it, and avoid a total rebuild while keep 3/4′s of the current core.

  12. #12 by JoonasJ86 at January 8th, 2012

Joe Colborne is good AHL player and might even turn a good NHLer. Although his skating has been a concern like his softness. Schenn has been average at best in every aspect this season imo.
Anyways, they are good players and i believe they will be great over time but most likely they will never be stars like Getzy.
If guy like Richards fetches a package of B. Schenn, Simmonds and a second then Getzlaf is going to get something like Kulemin, Kadri and two 1st round picks at least. You don’t trade franchise centers cheap because as u know there are only couple of those. Price comes with supply & demand, even in Toronto.

  13. #13 by JoonasJ86 at January 8th, 2012

I meant Schenn, Kadri and two 1st but Kuli could go in there aswell :)

  14. #14 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

IMO would rather trade Kadri and the extra late 1st for Getzlaf than Schenn. How many legit shutdown D-men in this league come with 230 pound frame, the leadership skills and the mean streak Schenn has? He’s already been in the top 5 for hits of all players in the NHL in multiple years before his 21st birthday, blocks a ton of shots and lays some absolutely bone crushing hits when the opportunity arrives. And i think i speak for a majority of leaf fans when i say i will drive Kulie to the airport if the deal really is him over Colborne plus Kadri and the 2 1st’s for Getzlaf. Kulemin’s 25 years old and has only had 1 really good yr (last yr with a ridiculous shooting pct when he scored 30 goals) and is due for a raise next yr as well. If the Ducks are comfortable paying Kulie 4+ Million and having the production like he’s having this yr (4 goals and 12 assists) over a 22 yr old 6’5 point per game cetner in the AHL in his first full yr in the league than that’s cool.

  15. #15 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

    @ JoonasJ86

I could live with that deal as well, Schenn, Kadri and the two 1st’s because that means we’ll be able to keep Colborne. As well as acquire Getzlaf ( which means our eventual top 2 C’s would be at least 6’4) something i’m sure Burke would enjoy :)

  16. #16 by Darryl at January 8th, 2012

I think Anaheim would be stupid to trade any of Perry, Getzlaf or PErry.

Getzlaf for Colborne and Schenn is one of the most lopsided laughable trade ideas Ive ever heard. Schenn is a good prospect but he still has a long way to go as does Colborne.

Anaheim has a lot of aging players coming off the books this year. Getzlaf is a 26 year old point per game center. He is the type of player you build a team around.

  17. #17 by Darryl at January 8th, 2012

If Anaheim is trading anyone they should trade Selanne. Having prospects on the way is more reason to not trade Getzlaf. Its insulting to even think of trading a player on his level.

  18. #18 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

    @ Darryl

What are you talking about Darryl? Anaheim did build a team around Getzlaf and Perry following their cup win in 07 when Getz and Perry were rookies. And guess where that’s got the Ducks so far? Past the quarter finals only once with no conference finals or Stanley cup appearances. Heck they didn’t even make the playoffs in 2009-10, and with their performance this yr they are regressing as group in general not forward despite having the league MVP from last yr flanking Getzlaf on 1 side and a top 3 Power Forward in the NHL on the other flank. This is definitely time for one of those change of scenery trades (like Lupul, Phaneuf etc), and no matter how good Getzlaf truly is giving up the equivalent of 4+ first round picks for a guy who’s having the type of season he is, is job suicide. That’s a HUGE HUGE gamble and to take the last 3 years to acquire all of the assets Burke has, and just throw majority of it in to one basket and give it to another team for any 1 player sounds like the exact opposite kind of thing Burke would do. What happens if Getzlaf loses motivation and turns out like E. Staal and V.Lecavailer as huge under performers? Trading for Getzlaf at this time does have some risk (however small) so something along the lines of Kadri, Schenn and whatever combination of picks the 2 teams are willing to work out should do it. But for the record Getzlaf is a really really great C just not the unicorn some of you guys are trying to make him out to be. And his team record as the Captain speaks for itself since 2007.

  19. #19 by Dave at January 8th, 2012

I really don’t see where some of you guys are coming from on Getzlaf….. No matter what his physical attributes and reputation he has never scored above a 100 points once in his career, and has only scored 70 points or more only 3 out of 6 seasons (only half of his time in the NHL and with an MVP calibre winger like Perry at his side) and is well on his way to making it 3 out of 7 after this yr. Outside of his cup win when he was younger and the Olympic gold medal what else amazing has Getzlaf contributed at the NHL level? Or better yet what has he contributed as the captain and leader, not follower of the team? Not too much, and certainly not enough to trade what some of guys think he’s worth.

  20. #20 by hotwings at January 8th, 2012

luke schenn and getzlaf are really cornerstone pieces on any team… trading schenn and then giving up a pick and a prospect is kinda ludicrous. i think its easy to underestimate schenn’s value to the leafs since they are so deep on defence.

on the other hand, getzlaf is a legitimate #1 centre and they have not been coming on the market that often in the past few years.. so maybe the market is dictacting an overpayment to get him…

i dont think getzlaf is worth 4 first rounders.. i think he is worth just a bit above what mike richards and jeff carter fetched..

the ducks are obviously in a bit of transition mode until they can drastically upgrade their d, bottom 6 forwards and goalies… so it might make sense for them to expedite that process by trading a big asset like getzlaf…

  21. #21 by Darryl at January 9th, 2012

Theyve had a terrible D core dont see how that is his fault.

There isnt many players like Getzlaf in this league to trade him is sutupid imo

  22. #22 by Randy Heath at January 9th, 2012

Don’t forget that the Islanders traded out of the Fifth spot in the draft because of the holes in Luke Schenn’s game. They didn’t want to pay the premium when they had Travis Hamonic. Toronto will have to give up at least One Starter (Schenn or Phaneuf), Two Prospects and Two First Round Draft Choices to land Getzlaf and a throwaway. Hell, Anaheim was talking to the Islanders about a Tavares for Getzlaf swap and that is better than anything Toronto has to offer.

  23. #23 by Randy Heath at January 9th, 2012

Anaheim should not trade either Getzlaf or Perry going into a contract year. Most players excel during those years. Now that they have lit a fire under these guys and are starting to win, I would be looking around for stop gap defensive help until next years draft which is loaded with defensive prospects and then fill holes through free agency. There are a lot of really good and cheap defenseman available next year. The only trade they should look into would be acquiring Ryan Miller. Toronto is the team that is desperate. They do not have the talent to make the playoffs at this point. Why help them? Players like Getzlaf and Perry are next to impossible to acquire and if Anaheim could land a player like Brenden Morrow to play Left Wing on that line and shift Bobby Ryan to the Second Line they would be well on their way back to the postseason.

  24. #24 by hotwings at January 9th, 2012

there is no way getz is worth a #1-2 defenceman (phanuef or schenn) PLUS 2 starters PLUS 2 first round picks… sorry, but you are way off….

… and the ducks should grab concussed miller out of buffalo as well????!!?

adding a brendan morrow gets them way back into the post season??!?! what?!! i think you are totally off base… the ducks needs are defence #1, then goal tending…

  25. #25 by Wunschkind89 at January 9th, 2012

I think people need to have this put in perspective. Kessel was traded for 2 1st-round picks. He was 21 at the time, and already had a 36-goal season under his belt. He was also an RFA, not a UFA eligible like Getzlaf is. Getzlaf is already 26 and, yes, his horrible season does hurt his value to an extent.

Expecting 2 1st-round picks and 2 top prospects is asking for the moon–perhaps if he were having a typical season of his. Right now I’d say he’s worth about 1 1st-round pick, 1 top prospect, and 1 decent-to-good young NHL player.

Expecting more for a player who has never even put up 100-points in a season is ridiculous.

  26. #26 by AJ at January 9th, 2012

What’s ridiculous is to base someone’s price and value mostly on the actual season he’s having IMO, may that be good or bad.

What you have to put in perspective is that we’re not talking about his value, we’re talking about his price. He’s a top 5 center in the league and it’s basic economics, that you have to pay a high price, more-than-likely overpay for something, that is well saught after, but the supply is close to non-existent. Hes a luxury at the moment.

  27. #27 by AJ at January 9th, 2012

anyway, Randy Heath’s suggestion is still too high :D
more so, ’cause even Schenn and Phaneuf are no equal

  28. #28 by Dave at January 9th, 2012

    @ AJ

And they call Leaf fans delusional…. Quick NHL history lesson here for you bud, just to put things into perspective for you. The smallest sample size of facts i could find to prove that offensive players skills peak at age 28 is 50 goal scorers. Only 1 player in the history of the nhl that has scored 50 or more goals in their career prior to their 28th birthday has done it after that date (Mike Bossy). Not even the great one could do that, the most he could muster was 41 goals. Basically AJ you are basing all of argument on Getzlaf`s past resume and not his future and what he will do for his new team (and even his past resume isn`t that great considering the Ducks past since 07 and the fact that he`s only scored 80 or more points twice in his career with an NHL MVP calibre winger). And expecting any team to trade the franchise for a 26 year old who can`t even consistently produce in the top 5 of C`s for points or single handidly carry a team is what`s ridiculous.

  29. #29 by AJ at January 9th, 2012

Dave, I just mentioned that I disagree with Randy Heath about his suggestion to trade the franchise for Getzlaf. (This is an exaggeration anyways) I stated earlier that his price still could be up to 4 1st round picks at maximum and I stick to that.

And you’re trying to convince me, that the reason why his not worth that much is that he’s just entering his 3 best years of his career? And they’re completely useless after they turn 28?

I’m also not basing my argument completely on Getzlaf’s past resume, I’m just trying to say that the fact that he’s having a down year does not downgrade his value and price as much as some people here think.

And lastly. single handedly carrying a team? You could put a healthy Crosby in the Ducks line-up and even he couldn’t turn around their season. Besides, could anyone ever single-handedly win a championship in this game? This is a teamsport. One with a lot of great individuals and efforts, but still a teamsport.

  30. #30 by Darryl at January 9th, 2012

Dave, its not basketball elite players arent able to jsut will their teams to the playoffs. Chicago had 5 elite players on their roster last year and still barely made the playoffs

    Anaheims problem is depth

  31. #31 by Dave at January 9th, 2012

AJ You’re right this is a team sport, and just the point i’ve been trying to make all along as to why Getzlaf (no matter how talented) won’t get the equivelent of 4 1st round picks. Asking a non playoff team to give up the equivelent of 4 picks in the 1st round (or other previous talented 1st round picks traded to the team like Gardiner and Colborne) would cripple a teams depth that takes years to acquire, so if you were going to give that up it should and would be for no less than a franchise player who can carry the load on his back (Crosby, Toews, Lidstrom etc) and Getzlaf just isn’t that type of talent. Teams have won the cup since the cap introduction by having elite prospects like Crosby, Malkin, Toews, Staal, Kane etc at a prospects cost on their ELC’s. Don’t get me wrong Getz could be a legit All-Star and unquestioned #1C on a championship team that was built the right way, obviously. But to ask him to be the “franchise” and type of talent like Lidstrom, Crosby, Scott Niedermayer etc and asking another team to sell the farm for him when he’s already peaked as far as potential goes (or not to far from now) and not having at least 5+ years of elite high end production in the tank for his new team is asking too much. Way too much especially if you look at past trades for stars Kessel (21 yrs old)- 2 1st’s and a 2nd. M. Richards(26yrs old)- the equivelent of a 1st B.Schenn and 2 2nd’s Wayne Simmonds was a 2nd round pick plus the actual 2nd round pick the Kings gave up. J.Carter(27 yrs old) and the most comparable player to Getzlaf due to size, skill, age, position and draft yr, would be the equivelent of 2 1st’s J.Voracek who’s a former 1st round pick, and actual 1st round pick from CLB, as well as a 3rd round pick. As you can see AJ no one, and i mean no one would even touch the equivelent of 4 1st’s for any 1 player in this league unless he’s “the franchise”. So for you guys to expect anywhere near 4 1st’s (in terms of value not actual picks and former 1st round picks) for Getzlaf is out of line…..

  32. #32 by hotwings at January 9th, 2012

the only player out there right now who would fetch 4 1sts, would be stamkos.. because of his ability, age, contract, etc… i think teams did have a chance in the off season to sign him to an offer sheet at the cost of 4 1st rounders, to no avail… that may be because of the unspoken code of conduct when it comes to offer sheets, but even giving up four 1sts for a stamkos, is a hard deal for any gm to do…

  33. #33 by Randy Heath at January 10th, 2012

I actually have some experience at the NHL level as a scout and former player so I will educate the so called “delusional” First, you will not get full value if a player has perceived personal or contractual problems (see Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Kyle Turris,et al). Secondly, you will not get full value if the players asks for or demands a trade. (see many throughout history) and lastly, if a team feels that this player is the last piece to a Stanley Cup team they will pay whatever is asked (see Barry Beck trade). Ryan Getzlaf falls into that category with Toronto. He does not want to leave. Anaheim does not want to trade him so if Toronto wants him, it will cost Schenn or Phaneuf, Colborne and Kadri and Two Firsts. Barry Beck was traded for five players because the Rangers felt he was all they needed and the trades are not that dissimiliar. Beck was traded for the Rangers second best Defenseman (McEwen, two Top Prospects Lucien DeBlois and Pat Hickey as well as Bobby Sheehan and Dean Turner).

  34. #34 by hotwings at January 10th, 2012

@heath.. you are overvaluing getzlaf… toronto may overpay, but what you are suggesting is so lopsided and an EXTREME overpayment…

i think people are right when they say that its gonna be bobby ryan before ryan getzlaf being traded…

barring your example of ancient trade history…burke is too saavy to pull the deal that you are suggesting… again.. EXTREME overpayment.

  35. #35 by Mark Easson at January 10th, 2012

I love all this talk. Lots of back-and-forth, and it’s been kept clean of name calling, swearing etc. Good work and keep it up.

Is Getzlaf worth the equivalent to 4 1st rounders? Maybe not, but the Ducks could ask for it as they don’t have trade him, nor do they probably want to. It’s just getting it out there that it would take a boatload to get him. Why not ask for the moon? I don’t see them moving him unless they get a huge offer.

Looking at it involving all teams and not just the Leafs ….. One thing you have to look at when looking at ’1st round picks,’ is were they are. A 1st rounder of a solid cup contender could be in the 25-30 range, which obviously has less value than a pick in the 10-15 range. A contending team offering a package of 2 picks, has less value than a fringe playoff team, therefore they’d have to increase prospect/player value.
