Could the Leafs be looking at Clowe? Rutherford wants a ton … No serious talks with Karlson … Peckham, Sutton getting interest … A Miller for Hiller swap?

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:

  • Only a few GM’s are in Ottawa, Brian Burke is one of them, and everyone is waiting for him to make a move.

“He’s trying. He’s trying hard. He definitely wants to get bigger,” a league executive said Thursday.

The Leafs would love to bring in a hard-nosed forward. A guy they could look at is Sharks winger Ryane Clowe. Clowe has 1 year left at a $3.625 million cap hit. There is word that he might be someone the Sharks could look at moving. It might take more than the Leafs want to offer San Jose to get him though. The Leafs would likely have interest in Tuomo Ruutu. The Hurricanes have talked to Ruutu about a contract extension but it’s believed he’s asking for too much on a long-term deal, so he’ll likely be traded.

  • League sources are saying that Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is asking a ton for his UFA defenseman. A league source said that Hurricanes are asking for 2 1st round picks or a 1st round pick and an ‘A’ prospect for one of Tim Gleason, Bryan Allen or Jaroslav Spacek. The asking price will come down.
  • The Blue Jackets would move center Antoine Vermette. He’s been available all season.
  • The Senators and defenseman Erik Karlsson’s camp haven’t had any serious contract talks. It will likely wait until after the season.
  • The Oilers are getting interest in defenseman Theo Peckham and Andy Sutton. Sutton will be a UFA at the end of the year. Peckham will be an RFA, and there are plenty of teams looking for help on the blueline.
  • The Ducks, Blackhawks and Lightning could be looking for goaltending help, so keep an eye on Ryan Miller. The Sabres aren’t shopping him, but they’ll have to decide soon if they are in the playoff hunt or not. A Miller for Jonas Hiller trade could be possible.

This guy is creating rumors, as if it’s ordered by someone.
The interesting thing is, that the Senators seem to be the least involved most of the time and he seems to know every insider info from all the other teams.

Anyway, the asking price for the Canes’ D-men is ridiculous. The only one worth even one 1st round pick may be Gleason, but even that’s only because of the need for D and the narrow market. And even so no higher, than a mid-round one.

IMO the proposed goalie swap makes zero sense for the Ducks. Hiller is starting to be his All-Star self again, being symptom free and getting over confidence and side-effect issues, while Miller is having an awful season, has recent concussion issues and comes for 2 million more, than Hiller.

    Hiller < Miller.

    And it's not even close.

As for the Leafs, it's going to be interesting to see who they wind up with, if they wind up with anything meaningful. Ryane Clowe isn't a bad hockey player, but I just don't see him filling a need. Colby Armstrong is essentially the exact same player, albeit way more oft-injured.

The Sabres are not looking to move Miller and even if they were they would not look for another goalie in return. They would request some much needed offense

One is American, plays in the East, in the center of the hockey region, gets all the limelight and stardom, the other is a European, earns his check in the West, furthermore in California and gets overlooked as pretty much most of the players on small markets. Hence your perception of the wide margin. They are two great goalies and they are closer, than you would think, I’m telling you.

If not for anything else, when they were healthy the last couple of years, Hiller was better. Plus may I remind you, this article and the rumors are about getting rid of Miller. That doesn’t really bode well for your argument either.

Hiller isn’t a bad goalie. Miller has put up the same numbers that Hiller has while always playing 15 more games a season.

Agreed with AJ , Hiller is a good goalie. He has been really solid for them last couple of years. The problem is their team defense is terrible. Their D core has some good puck movers, but is badly lacking a shutdown type guy.

Playing a young D man like Fowler 22 minutes a night is asking for disaster

This Clowe rumor is a joke…..No chance SJ gives up their only top fwd with any muscle and thinks they still have a shot at a Cup run. These “rumors” are asinine. People are getting paid for this????

Why would Anaheim want Schenn hotwings? Let alone for Ryan. They’re shopping Vishno to clear top O time for Fowler and Schultz. Schenn still needs coach protection and is clearly not the player many thought he would be (which is why so many Leaf fans include him in their “dream” deals in the first place). Come back down from the clouds, no matter who else you throw in there.

Why Morrow to Leafs? For their Cup run?

Colby Armstrong value vs. Clowe was funny Wuns.
