Steve Downie traded to the Avalanche … Kyle Quincey ends up with Red Wings … Lightning get 1st round pick

The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded winger Steve Downie to the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Kyle Quincey. The Lightning then sent Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings for a 2012 1st round pick and defenseman Sebastien Piche.

The Avalanche currently sit 3 points out of the playoffs in the West, but would have to leapfrog 3 teams. They are tied with the Stars at 62 points. The Kings and Flames have 65 points.

Downie (24) carries a $1.85 million cap hit and will be a RFA at the end of the year. Quincey (26) carries a $3.125 million and will also be a RFA at the year. Piche (24) carries a $563,333 cap hit and will be a RFA

The Red Wings originally drafted Quincey in 2003 in the 4th round.

This trade is unbelievable… how the Red Wings were swearing they wouldn’t move high picks and top prospects and then this..
Quincey has come full circle and the Red Wings must see a long term solution for their D in him if they gave up this much for him. You also wonder how much influence Yzerman’s legendary RW status had on this. He got a helping hand for sure.

It was a nice pick up by the Avs and Red Wings. Lightning collecting picks to likely to make a run at a goalie.

What a great trade for everybody involved, however sad to see Downie leave TB. I don’t think Yzerman called in any favors for this trade if that’s what is meant by his legacy having an influence on Kenny Hollands decision(helping hand). Though its completely possible Yzerman had some inside info on what DET wanted and/or what it would take to get a high draft pick from them. I think DET is definitely thinking big picture with Stuart and Lidstrom possibly not returning next year, but thats one thick blueline for the time being. I also see Yzerman trading all these picks he is gathering for a proven goaltender in July, Elliot looks good if Bishop is the new kid in STL next year.

Yeah, I know, I’m surprised because the move is seemengly against what Holland said and I thought he would give a high pick only for a major piece.
Quincey can be just that, a great long-term addition (just didn’t see him go for a 1st), he’s been quietly producing good stats.
A tampa guy on a forum said (referring to his source) TBL was going for Bishop.
I wonder if Yzerman makes his moves for a goalie in the next five days to help his team. He could steal even Bernier, if the Nash talks collapse there.
