Leafs trade Keith Aulie to the Lightning for Carter Ashton

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Keith Aulie to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Carter Ashton.

Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Burke in an email about Ashton: “Size and skill, big body with good wheels.”

Cory Pronman via twitter: “Wow Ashton. That’s a #win and a half for Toronto. Many pro scouts called Ashton Tampa’s best or second best prospect.” … “Upside is ok 2nd line forward very good 3rd liner. Not a tremendous haul, but then again you got him for Aulie.”

@leafschatter via twitter: “As mentioned yesterday, Keith Aulie loses his waiver exempt status by end of season…#Leafs would have had 8 D (one too many) waiver exempt”

I was looking forward to this deadline to see what the leafs could drum up for a late season push

looks like another year missed :(

I dunno about other Leaf fans, but I’m excited and ecstatic after this trade deadline. The Leafs aren’t a good team and are still in the middle of a rebuild. Stay the course, see what this team can do for the remaining 20-or so games and evaluate in the off-season.

I really hope Grabbo gets resigned, but $5MM is waaaay too much for a guy who’s never scored 30-goals in a season. Hopefully he will accepted a 2 or 3-year deal with a cap hit around $3.75MM.

Hopefully Burke can dump some salary in the off-season and work toward being a more physical and younger team. IMO, Armstrong is the biggest piece that needs to go as he doesn’t play a physical game anymore, he doesn’t chirp, nor does he put the puck in the net. Hell, he can’t even stay healthy. For a $3MM cap hit, he’s pretty much useless to the team.

Other players that I wouldn’t mind see going (that are realistically possible to be moved): Connolly, Lombardi, MacArthur, and even Schenn if the price is right.

Again, I think this was a great trade deadline by Burke, this team simply isn’t anywhere near good enough to compete, he did what he could, and didn’t overreact to their awful play in their last 10-games.

As a footnote, I’d love to see the Leafs acquire a player of Kassian’s pedigree.

Wunschkind89: I agree with everything you said (except about seeing MacArthur go). I really hope they re-sign Grabo but not for $5m. Yes, he get’s better every year and is a work horse, but I’d say Jordan Staal is better than him, and Staal has a cap hit of 4m.
