Sunday morning hits: Luongo, Thomas, Babchuk, Benn, Subban, Bertuzzi, Atkinson, Gomez and Islanders

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Panthers have shown interest in Roberto Luongo, but GM Dale Tallon would have to sweeten the pot to land him. Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis hasn’t been as aggressive as many had thought. They know that it would take Tyler Bozak, Nazem Kadri and a 2nd round pick to get him. The Blackhawks could be interested if they struggle to start the season. Tim Thomas wants to play next year, and the Bruins could either let him be a UFA after the season, or ‘toll’ his contract, forcing him to honor the last year on his contract. Some teams were interested in Thomas last July, but he said he wasn’t going to play. The Flames are willing to move defenseman Anton Babchuk.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika answers on why Stars forward Jamie Benn hasn’t been re-signed yet, piecing together info and speculating in some cases. Benn’s agent, Rich Evans, may be looking for a 3 year or shorter contract. His next deal would obviously be in the millions, but a 3 year deal would allow him to go for a homerun deal on his next deal when he’ll be 26. The Stars won’t go 4 years as he would be a UFA at the end of that. It appears that the Stars are willing to go with 2, 3, 5 or 6 year terms. The sides are off on money for all years. The Stars don’t want to pay a premium price for a RFA. Comparables for RFA years are in the $3.75 to $5 million range. Longer term deal increase to $6.8 on the high end.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings Todd Bertuzzi could miss weeks recovering from mononucleosis. It could be a month before he’s able to skate again. Mono is highly contagious, so he won’t be around the team.
  • Kevin Kurz via twitter: Brent Burns and Jason Demers are both travelling with the Sharks, but that doesn’t mean they will be playing.

After watching the Leafs last night, that trade ofer for Luongo seems like a big overpayment from the Leafs. Kadri’s value is going up the more he plays, not down. Bozak is hugely underrated, this is only his 3rd season in the league and it looks like he could be a 60-point centreman. 2 top-6 forwards and a high pick in a deep draft for a hugely overpaid veteran who is heading into the last stint of his career. I don’t think so Gillis. Go ahead, keep him, and let his value continue to drop into the summer. Eventually, in my opinion, the longer the Canucks hold onto him, the lower his value is going to get.

I think Detroit knows that the Habs would match any offer they make. Its not happening.

    Re: Thomas,
What do you mean “Toll His Contract”?

@Jeff, by taking a year off he did not fulfill his contract and if/when he returns, the Bruins have the right to claim he fulfill his last year before he is entitled to unrestricted free agency. They also have the right to let him walk.

That makes sense, and is great for the team. His an asset with trade value.

what would the wings owe montreal if subban signed?

As per the previous CBA, compensation is based on the salary band in which the player is signed. At the AAV that it would take to sign him, i think The Red Wings would be giving up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd, or Two 1st’s, a 2nd and a 3rd. Not enough, in my opinion, for MTL not to match.

Why do you keep publishing the garbage that Bruce Garrioch writes? The guy’s main source seems to be his own cup of coffee. Always putting out ridiculous affirmations out there and making unfounded claims left and right. He’s one of the main reasons I don’t visit this site as much as I used to.

Claude … Sorry that you are not a fan of Garrioch, but I can’t just exclude him, especially his Sunday morning post.

Some of his stuff my be out there a bit, but what he mentioned for this post has been out there for well over a week, and from multiple people.

Just skip over his ‘section’ when you see his name. He’s not a reason not to visit the site every day (or several times a day).

If there are other reasons you don’t visit the site, you can send me an email at mark(at)sportscity.com and I’ll see if they are areas that can be addressed.
