Game 5 Injury Updates … Boychuk hit to be reviewed … Is it suspendable?

  • Nick Kypreos of SportsNet: A source told Kypreos that Patrice Bergerson may have suffered a spleen injury. He was taken to hospital by ambulance during the third period for observation.

“Guys, I’m not going there, so anything else but injury here,” Julien said. “I’ll update you when I have an update. There’s nothing more. We can ask a million questions. I don’t have any more information than probably you guys do right now.”

  • Mark Lazerus: Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said that Jonathan Toews has an upper-body injury and is hopeful for Game 6.
  • Joe Haggerty: The Department of Player Safety will be reviewing Johnny Boychuk’s hit on Jonathan Toews.

Do you think Boychuk SHOULD get suspended? Do you think Boychuk WILL get suspended? (if you are a Blackhawks or Bruins fan, make note of it when commenting)

The hit was high.. sure looked like he targeted the head. I can’t believe there was no penalty, but the fact there was no penalty could help Boychuk avoid suspension. I do think the league needs to protect its stars.. and if it was Matt Cooke who did this it’d be at least a penalty.. if not a public lynching.

What I don’t like about the hit was that it was blindside rather then straight on. And it was more of a hit with intent to injure then simply to separate player and puck. But its not clear if the head was targeted.

It was an entertaining hit but seeing Toews head snap back is scary. But, why do players raise their hands like that in a semi-cross checking motion when making a hit. I’m not sure if the stick got him as the video is too fast. But I always thought it was supposed to be shoulder to shoulder or hip to hip. This blurs the line between semi blindside hit and semi cross check.

hit was totally clean. when i saw it i thought it was a great hit and toews knew thats what happens when you go to the net like that. can’t believe this is gonna be reviewed he clearly didnt make contact with the head. anyone who says differently is a liar

I am a Hawks fan and while it was kind of an unnecessary hit, I would say it was more along the lines of unfortunate. I do not think that it should or will result in a suspension.

Bruins fan here. Hawks fan Eric is right. I don’t believe Boychuk targeted Toews’ head. I think he intended to hit him in the upper body and his hands and arms moved up to the head when Toews’ head started to come down. Unfortunate if Toews and Bergeron have significant injuries.

Leafs fan. Bad hit. Way too high, blindsided. If this is not a suspension, I don’t know what is.

Not to mention that it’s dumb to have all the best players in hospitals for large chunks of the season + final – damages the game.

Clean hit to the shoulder. Can’t stand when people say, “have to protect the stars”. So the league min guys can get slaughtered but stars are untouchable?. Just stupid. If you say he targeted the head you must be a mind reader, cuz the only contact was the shoulders. To say he targeted the head is purely spectulation.

    Bruins Fan.
I do think the hit was hard and could be considered a blindside but at the same time Toew’s knew it was coming. You dont rush a net like that an expect to be untouched. I don’t think it was a hit targeting the head but it was definitely a hit that was intended to send a message. Boychuk went in to level Toew’s, no question about that, but if there was intent to injure than he could’ve done much worse. A lot of players put their hands up like that when they’re going for a check, but Johnny didnt leave his skates or make direct/initial contact with the head. Not the cleanest hit but I don’t think we’ll see any discipline issued on it.

Leafs Fan here. I don’t understand why someone didn’t jump in and protect Toews. Boychuk should have been wearing his cup on a Hawks stick after that hit. Players need to stand up for their stars, not the league protecting them.

As a fan of neither team and someone who played the game, it is obvious emotion took hold and he went high intentionally. He could have made a devastating body hit but he brought his hands up to the head. I didn’t watch the game but it looks like a hit out of anger instead of a hit to clear the crease. He could of went lower and made a more memorable hit. If you are trying to make the point not to cut across the middle, then there are better ways then a cheap shot to the head. Toews should have gotten the full impact to the face but he ducked a little at the end or he might have suffered a terrible injury. Should be a one game suspension since this is the playoffs.
