Afternoon Hits II: Schneider, Leafs, Bruins, Canucks, Red Wings and Kuba

  • Bill Watters: “Schneider ‘s exit from Vancouver was precipitated by off ice issues, rather than goaltending and financial as outlined in Gillis’ rationale.”
  • The Fourth Period: The Maple Leafs plan on being active in the next few days. They are looking for a top line center and a top-six winger. The Leafs are looking at UFAs Stephen Weiss and David Clarkson. Weiss could be looking for a five year worth $5 million a season. Various reports have Clarkson looking for upwards of $6 million a year, which might be too much for the Leafs. The Leafs are shopping Mikhail Grabovski and John-Michael Liles.
  • Pierre LeBrun: After originally deciding to cut ties with Jaromir Jagr, GM Peter Chiarelli said he’s thought about circling back to him after Nathan Horton said he’s leaving.
  • The Fourth Period: Bruins GM Chiarelli is working on a couple of trades. He’s believed to be looking to move Rich Peverley and Chris Kelly to free up some cap space. The Bruins are close to signing Tuukka Rask and Patrice Bergeron to long term extensions. Chiarelli has already had a conversation with Daniel Briere and could inquire about David Clarkson.
  • Mike Halford of Pro Hockey Talk: Keith Ballard’s agent, Ben Hankinson, went on Vancouver radio this morning and said the Canucks bought out the two remaining years of his contract. According to CapGeek, the Canucks now have $7.4 million in cap space.
  • Brad Ziemer: The Canucks have seven roster spots to fill, and the re-signing of Chris Tanev won’t come cheap.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: The Red Wings have interest in Stephen Weiss. It’s not looking like Valtteri Filppula will be returning. The Wings had interest in David Clarkson, but have cooled lately. Nathan Horton may be asking too much for them. There are concerns whether or not Jarome Iginla can play the up-tempo game at both ends. Their biggest need is a second line center. Options could be Mike Ribeiro (Washington), Matt Cullen (Minnesota), Derek Roy (Vancouver) and Tyler Bozak (Toronto). Other forwards that might interest them: Michael Ryder (Montreal), Viktor Stalberg (Chicago), Mason Raymond (Vancouver), Brenden Morrow (Pittsburgh), Ryane Clowe (Rangers) and Jaromir Jagr (Boston).
  • Bob McKenzie: The Florida Panthers are buying out defenseman Filip Kuba. They are not using a compliance buyout, so it will count against the cap.

No surprise that the Leafs want to add a couple of pieces. If they could ship Liles to the Avs, maybe they can get Statsny . May need to add a prospect like Percy . If no go there, I would sign Weiss and let Bozak walk. Sounds like Clarkson may want too much $$$, but if he signs for 5years at 5mill/yr, he is in. Still could use another solid D man, but the cap rules.

What’s with people calling Stastny a number one guy and insisting that he would garner prospects etc in a trade? 24 pts in 40 games last year and only passed 60 points once four years ago. Aside from his one good season Stastny’s numbers are pretty similar to Grabovski. Not a true No 1 and definitely not worth 6.6 mil. I actually think its the Aves who would have to include a prospect or retain salary to facilitate a deal.

Chris leaf fans have no idea what a top center plays like but I would encourage a dion for paul deal

I hope Chris is right, but I think Statsny gained a lot of ground at the world championships, where he was a dynamo and had a ton of points. So…his stock may have risen . People point out that he has played with a bunch of scrubs in Colorado and if he centred Kessel and Lupul, he would score much better than Bozak. Anyway, I doubt Toronto really want Statsny, because of that stupid contract of his. I see Weiss as the most viable centre out there, if the Leafs move Bozak or Grabo.

Tiedummy, while Phaneuf isn’t a top 2 d man on a contender he’s usually top 10 among offensive d men. Stastny is nowhere near as high as that among nhl centres. Who replaces Dion’s 30 min per night? Phaneuf is the most complete d man on the Leafs for better or worse. Until u can find a replacement you don’t trade him for a third line centre at a brutal cap hit.

agreed.. i hope they keep phaneuf… his game has come along way since his first year as a leaf where he was inexplicably shooting the puck constantly over the net on his slap shots…

even an extension for a few more years would be good news… even if we got a #1 or #2 d in free agency or trade, dion is still a keeper.. it’s hard to find his tenacity and aggression + offensive upside

Trade grabovski for a 2nd. Trade liles for a 2nd. Trade gauthier to Montreal for tinordi. Package jvr, tinordi and a 2nd to Boston for seguin. Sign bozak or weise. Sign clarkson.( Lupul – weise – kessel), ( clarkson – seguin – kadri), (mclement – bolland – kulemin). 13 million going out. 16 million coming back. We had approx 6 million after rfa are signed so that leaves approx. 3 million to shore up the defence. If one center gets injured, kadri slides over or bolland moves up. The bolland line is used against the opposition’s top line and penalty kill.
