Free Agent Hits: Morrow, Rangers, Jagr, Sabres, Gagner, Capitals, Clarkson and Oilers

Patrick Caisse: Brenden Morrow’s agent said he’s had “a good discussion” with Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin and will likely have another.

Brian Costello: The Rangers have about $6.5 million in salary cap and four RFA’s to sign that will cost them about $10 million. Costello still thinks that Brad Richards will be moved, maybe to the Flames?

Adrian Dater: Dater is hearing that Jaromir Jagr to the Hurricanes is possible.

Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Jaromir Jagr’s agent yesterday:

“I have not talked to anybody in Buffalo and the Sabres have not called,” Petr Svoboda, Jagr’s agent, told The News by phone this afternoon from Santa Monica, Calif. “It’s absolutely not true. Speculation.”

Most reports have the Canadiens and Hurricanes listed, with maybe the Senators in third.  Many thought that Jagr would sign with the Sabres for big money, then get traded at the deadline.

Dan Tencer: Nothing new on Sam Gagner talks with the Oilers. He’s expected to file for arbitration if a deal can’t get done before.

Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Capitals didn’t really do anything in free agency and Capitals fans shouldn’t expect anything.

“We didn’t think it was a great class of players. It wasn’t a great pool of players to invest in, so we didn’t,” McPhee said on the first day of the team’s development camp in Arlington. “Our roster’s pretty much full. . . . We don’t anticipate doing much more, if anything.”

JoAnne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Winger David Clarkson turned down more money from the Oilers to sign with the Maple Leafs. GM Craig MacTavish yesterday:

“I’m trying to get the right piece or another piece that would start to excite me in terms of how our team is shaping up,” MacTavish said Tuesday as the Oilers wrapped up their summer development camp at Sherwood Park’s Millennium Place. “The UFA pickups, I think, are going to really help us, but I would like to do one or two other things before we’re happy.

“I’m a little frustrated. I had certain objectives in mind, and I think I’m going to be able to accomplish some of those things, but it doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to accomplish all the things that I wanted to.”
