Morning Rumors: Gardiner, Yakupov, Vanek, Oilers goaltending options, Phaneuf, Maata, and Martinez

  • James Mirtle: Mirtle heard that the asking price for Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner was “a ****load.”
  • Tim Panaccio: Addressing Nail Yakupov rumors, why would the Flyers need another Russian head case? Oilers Ales Hemsky makes sense, but the asking price is likely too high. Adam Kimelman: Kimelman responds to Panaccio saying that Yakupov is not a head case, noting there is a big difference between a 19-year old and a the Flyers last goalie.
  • Bruce Garrioch: The Coyotes have quietly denied interest in Sabres Thomas Vanek.
  • John Vogl: Vogl notes that Vanek would look good beside John Tavares and countryman Michael Grabner.
  • Darren Dreger: The Oilers will need to find a No. 1 goalie, and then have to decide if they would be willing to trade one of their young guns.
  • Pierre LeBrun: Bob McKenzie has already reported that the Oilers have already reached out to teams about goaltenders. Options for the Oilers could be: Ryan Miller (sense that GM Darcy Regier may prefer to wait to build a bigger market for Miller), Jonas Hiller (likely too early for the Ducks to consider), Michal Neuvirth (if the Capitals feel they can live without him) and Brian Elliott.
  • Elliotte Friedman of CBC: The Oilers are at 49 contracts, so trading a draft pick or signing a free agent eliminates some roster flexibility. Blues goalie Brian Elliott makes sense, but the Blues may not want to take back salary. Is it worth an assets to get Elliott or Ryan Miller. Though the Senators likely wouldn’t trade him, Robin Lehner would be a good trade target.Thought is that if Dion Phaneuf comes down on money, the Maple Leafs may go a little longer on term.Trade market is cool with the Avalanche and Flames playing well. With Kris Letang getting close to returning, the Penguins will have to decide whether to keep Olli Maatta or return him to junior. They could keep eight defenseman, put someone on waivers or try to make a trade.

Some teams have called the Kings about Alec Martinez.

Three teams have talked about how they would like to add Thomas Vanek.

Oilers would be crazy to give up much for a Goalie. There are really good ones out there, and almost no demand. Who else needs a goalie?

Calgary, the Islanders, possibly the Rangers, philly, Florida, and probably Tampa. Oh and nobody will give up quality unless they get quality in return so understand that nobody is giving up a quality goaltender for second rate players and second rate prospects on a bottom feeding team. Nobody wants Hemsky, Gagner or Smid or Larson. If you want top tier goaltending or top two d men you’ll have to give up a big gun like Yak, a top prospect like Nurse or a 1st rounder. Not what you want to hear but it’s the truth. The rest of the league does not exist to provide the Oilers with grade A talent in exchange for scraps and expendable pieces.

Disagree. Look at what YYZ gave up for Bernier. Or what CBJ gave up for Bobber. Nashville and OTT recvd very little in their recent trades of Goaltenders. And as you recall, OTT didn’t give up much for Anderson either.

    EDM should be patient.

Dubnyk will rebound from this slump and finish the year playing 55+ games with a .92 save percentage. Yak will be signed next year to a 5 year contract and the Oliers will get to the third round this year, then win four consecutive cups. Don’t mess with the core…we are watching the future dynasty.

Jeff, almost all of those guys were unproven backups or goaltenders with terrible records. If you want to take your chances on a backup or an under performing starter then you’re right. A 2nd round pick and young players would be the starting point. But if you want a proven starter with playoff experience (like Miller or Hiller) then it’s a different story. Be careful with Elliot. He’s got good numbers but the St. Louis Blues have one of the best defensive lineups and systems in the NHL. No D man on the Oilers could play in St. Louis’s top 4.

    Tim, I hope you’re joking.

Chris, Agree with you, esp Elliott/Hitch. But i still wouldnt pay top dollar for a Hiller or Miller, as you are negotiating against yourself (no one else is in the market for a Goalie right now).
Patience is advised here. Even if the team does not improve the season…they get a full year under a new (and very good) coach, and they bring in yet another lottery pick in the draft. Then they can pick and choose from the myriad of excellent Goalies that will be available next summer, via Free Agency and Trade.

Tim, Dubnyk would be best served sharing time with a veteran Goalie this season (or backing up a very good veteran).

Dynasty? Not likely. At least not till you move our Kevin Lowe and bring in a strong management team. I would take Colorado’s young roster over EDM. I would even think long and hard about taking FLA’s young roster over EDM at this point. EDM has four insanely talented forwards, who have yet to learn how to play a 2 way game. Plus Shultz, who also has a lot to learn. And some really nice defence prospects. But a dynasty that does not make.

TIm, Dubnyk will never be a starting goalie on the oilers. Hes had tons of season to progress and yet he finds himself going downhill. Until Yakupov gets over the fact that he is no longer playing in the OHL, he will never be a successful player. He almost reminds me of a Nikita Filatov. Great offensively, but too arrogant to play defence and help the team. I would not be surprised if he is in the KHL down the road. In fact the oilers made the mistake passing up on a player the Galchenyuk who now finds himself playing top line in Montreal and one of the top scorers this year. The oilers management has done nothing to build around an abundance of young talented players. There dynasty is a ways away unless they learn to let go of guys like kevin lowe.

Or they could have traded down for Buffalo’s picks, drafting Hertl and Subban. That would have been something..

Here’s two … miller Vanek Myers (cond.1st round pick “if” miller or Vanek don’t resign with us) for Yak,Duby,Hesmky and old Shultz ….

    Or

Emery, Simmonds, Cobourn, Coturier for yak Hemsky and Duby

    Or

Yakupov, Duby, old Shultz for Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn & Emery

  14. Jeff

    October 18, 2013 at 1:10 pm

When was the last time you ever saw a trade like that in the NHL? Never happens. Miller/Vanek/Myers also represent something like (off the top of my head) $20m in Salary. Edm has something like $4m in space, i believe, so how do they match up with Salaries?

Philly cant trade Emery, they just signed him. Sure, technically, they can trade him, but player and agent would feel lied to, and future players and agents will consider that. Its not a practice that happens very often. Maybe if Holmgren went to Emery and explained that EDM wanted him as their Starter, and then let Emery decide.

Holmgren is not trading Couterier or Schenn (unless its an obvious win for Philly), as that would be an admission that he made a mistake in those previous trades.

And certainly, Couterier, Simmonds, Coburn and Emery is paying WAY WAY too much for Yakapov (and spare parts). Simmonds is a stud. Couterier could still be a star.

Lastly, i dont think Yakapov is really a “Flyer” type player.

Holmgrens wants to CLEAR CAP!!! && he’s willing to take Yak for long term, Duby for goalie insurance , Hemsky & old Shultz just to help flyers this year possibly trade them at deadline but obviously let then walk when their contracts over ….Philly has too many LOng term high contracts !!! Which is why getn a longtime superstar like yak & clearing cap makes SENSE!!! Jeff you obviously know nothing ….go read a few other websites instead of sticking to Terry Jones and your NHL14 be a GM mode

    “Holmgrens wants to CLEAR CAP!!!”

Really, then why didnt he do this in the summer, rather than add players like Vinny and Streit, and while Extending Simmonds and Read?

“he’s willing to take Yak for long term”

Which team wouldnt want the 1-1 2012 Pick long-term?

“Philly has too many LOng term high contracts !!!”

Really? I thought they already traded Richards and Carter? The Flyers have 7 players with deals that are longer than 3 seasons. They have 5 players with deals that are longer than 4 seasons. And 3 of those 5 were recently singed to those contracts.

This is all about Yak …lotta teams will give up a couple “roster players” for a future superstar and possibly rocket Richard winner ….2 years after we trade Yak we will REALLY regret it ….and we CANNOT trade our smartest player in RNH, or our 2 time Mem. Cup Champ & MVP or we ain’t trading Eberle due to his clutch performances under pressure (playoff type hero) and Perron like u said “we just picked him up & won’t trade him so soon” although he also is one of our more consistent skilled forwards who plays with a edge !! So too me that makes Yak & Hesmky the two odd men out along with Duby to bring us our team NEEDs…I’d take Miller & Vanek if we can squeeze in Myers …heck I’d take Myers over Justin Shultz anyday …big tough Dman who can also contribute offensively …too be honest we have a Ju Shultz type guy down in OKC by the name of Taylor Fedun !! ..and I also like the Cobourn, Coturier,Simmonds, Emery deal aswell as it gives us the power forward we desperately need in the top 6, a top 2 Dman , and center depth …razor would be a bonus!

Holmgrens buggin Mac so it ain’t a pipe dream ….Philly would still have giroux , Hartnell, Schenn, Reid, Voracek to play with Hemsky….throw Yak in the mix!! U don’t think Coturier is expendable ?? PLEASE!!

On Couturier, quote from ESPN yesterday:

“Under Peter Laviolette, Couturier averaged 14:21 of ice time per game. That number has increased to 18:16 under Berube. The power-play time is even more dramatic for Couturier. The Couturier jump in power-play ice time is dramatic, although the results aren’t there yet. He’s still looking for his first goal of the season, but his new coach is confident that Couturier has the skill set to contribute right now on an NHL power play.

“He can do that. He’s an all-around player,” Berube said, noting that injuries to Vincent Lecavalier and Scott Hartnell play a part in that decision. “We use him more in a defensive role. That doesn’t mean he can’t score goals either.”

Is that an evolution Berube sees happening over the course of this season?

    “Definitely,” Berube said.

Couturier has been impressive as a defensive player since he broke into the league, and continues to make strides in other parts of his game. His faceoff percentage is at 51.9 percent this season after finishing last season at 43.9 percent. It’s an area of his game he’s focused on improving.

“It’s been pretty strong lately. It’s something center men need to be good at if you want to play in key situations,” Couturier said. “For sure, I’ve been working on it and there’s still a place for improvement as well.”

    Hartnell-Giroux-Yakupov
    Voracek-Schenn-Hemsky

You think this looks like a Flyers Top Two Lines? Those players do NOT play “The Flyer Way”.

So, i dont agree that would be better. Simmonds and Couturier are terrific young players. Flyer fans should be patient, it will work out.

    This is not about stats.

    Yak 3.75, Hemsky 5mill…
