Asking Price For Del Zotto Will Need To Come Down For Senators

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The NHL Christmas trade freeze is now over. Senators GM Brian Murray has been working the phones over the past month. He has spoken with the Rangers several time over the past six weeks about Michael Del Zotto. The Maple Leafs, Sharks and Avalanche have been rumored to have talked with the Rangers about Del Zotto as well.

Sources say that if the Senators are to work out a deal for Del Zotto, the asking price will have to come down. The Rangers are believed to be demanding Marc Methot, but that isn’t going to happen. The Senators may be willing to move Patrick Wiercioch, who has become a healthy scratch of late.

“Del Zotto’s value has gone down,” said a league executive Friday. “He hasn’t shown any consistency and he’s not worth nearly as much as he may have been earlier in the season.”

  • Del Zotto was drafted 20th overall in the first round of the 2008 draft by the Rangers.

What would Rangers do with a left handed injury prone finesse defenseman with no upside? MDZ played 24 minutes last nite, has career numbers at 23 that Wiercocki may not approach for 10 years. MDZ, Hagelin (9 goals N missed 10 gms), & JT MIller are all in Vigneault’s out house. Moving young players how have succeeded for players of the same age that have no upside doesn’t make sense. Just wait for coach 2 B fired. Rangers R medicocre because Lundquist, Staal, Nash, Callahan are injured or struggling…not because of Hagelin, MDZ,JTMiller. MDZ for Zach Smith might get interested.

How are the Oilers not all over this?

Teams shouldn’t give up on players before they’re 24 or 25.

I look at Alex Steen in St. Louis and think of how he was criticized as being a bust etc. in Toronto because he wasn’t a superstar by the time he was 23 or 24. And sure enough by 26 he was one of the best 2 way forwards in the NHL and now that he’s 28 or 29 he’s a key player on one of the best teams in the NHL.

The Leafs did this with Rask too. The Bruins will see this with Seguin in a few years. The Habs did this with MacDonaugh. The Islanders did this with Chara. There are so many examples of this.

If the Rangers are going to trade a talented young d man who has proven he can play at a high level they need to get a good young player or very high draft pick in return. If I’m the Rangers I’m asking for Zibanejad or a top prospect like Ceci.

Last year the kid had 21 points in 47 games and was a +6. Two years ago the kid had 41 points in 77 games and was a +20 (along with 10 points in 20 playoff games).

But because he’s had a bad 30 games on a struggling team under a new coach he’s all of the sudden worth some depth d man like Patrick Wiercoch?

    What a joke.
