NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs and Hope Smoke Edition: Staal, Tavares and Stastny

  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “If Eric Staal is available, is that type of player the guy who entices Nonis to trade Kadri and Gardiner and whatever else for him?”
  • Hope Smoke: Dreger added that it’s possible that Islanders John Tavares could reach a point where he doesn’t want to be in New York any longer. No intel on the matter, just a feeling by Dreger. Dreger: “Rick Nash didn’t want to be the guy to come home to Toronto. Tavares is the type of guy who could handle Toronto
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “I think one way or another Kadri or Gardiner get addressed this summer”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “I don’t think the Leafs pay Bolland over $5 million in the summer.”
  • Hope Smoke: Nick Kypreos: “Colorado is prepared to pay Stastny $5 million this summer. If he wants more, he’s going to go somewhere else” ….  Adrian Dater responded “the Toronto Maple Leafs”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie: “I don’t know how the Leafs win a lottery like the Ducks did when they acquired Pronger. Those guys aren’t moved & don’t hit UFA” … “The Leafs are off to a good start in fixing their blueline with Gardiner & Rielly”

Tavares and Staal would be awesome just as long as they trade the disgrace of a Captain Pylon as well.

I just think it’s funny when Dreger and Bob MacKenzie get going with these rumors…Yeah, getting Tavares AND Staal would be pretty great, but Tavares isn’t getting traded, and it’s pretty unlikely that Staal is either.

Reason #1 why believing anything out of Darren Dreger’s mouth is probably a foolish choice: “I think one way or another Kadri or Gardiner get addressed this summer”. Yeah, so they either get traded or they don’t. Top notch reporting bud. Same sort of thing happened 10 days before the trade deadline with Vanek. Bobby Mac said something along the lines of “I think the Vanek situation will be resolved in 8-10 days”. Bravo!

I’ve heard rumors that Tomas Vanek will sign with an NHL team this summer after sometime between July 1st and the beginning of training camp. It will most assuredly be a team in either the Eastern or Western Conference.

i cant see the leafs getting Tavares. He has a super cheap contract and the Isles have done a good job of avoiding bad contracts in the pasts years and they really have no major contracts that they are looking to dump.

I dont know whats up w/ Carolina.. Maybe they do need a shake up and would benefit w/ going w/ Skinner/J.Staal/Kadri at centre and parting with Eric Staal… Maybe Kadri/Gardiner/2nd gets it done… Hurricanes and Leafs pulling a blockbuster trade seems likely and w/ their subpar seasons, even more so…

Neither Dreger or MacKenzie said the Leafs ARE getting Staal or Tavares. Theo said they’d be after them IF they became available. You guys are putting words in their mouths. As dumb as those guys are, you don’t do yourselves any favours by doing that.

Alex Steen is a perfect example of why you don’t trade 24 year olds because your dumbass fan base calls them busts.

As always its very hard to entice high caliber players to sign or trade options, as you deal with media whispers, rants and pressure FOUR hours a day. Then when your done with horrible rumors swirling around your head a message from a little bird tells you that your average or not that great, so your coach says. It was amazing have Mats Sundin, I due remember the terrible times his name was mud and the next game he would save us fans, those days are over. The only way the Leafs will get a superstar is through the draft or they could call San Jose, Joe Thorton did mention his dream was to play for the Maple Leafs but, then again how much does Joe, have left in the tank.

Leafs have a star player in Kessel. Even during this slump he’s been producing. That isn’t the problem. The problem is defense and secondary scoring. If the Leafs are intent on trading Gardiner or Kadri in some kind of package it better be with a top 2 d man coming back. In my mind I don’t see a whole lot of value in keeping the likes of Raymond, Bolland and Kulemin around when they are already in their late twenties and can’t be a part of the solution now. Of I were Nonis I’d do the following:

    - let Raymond, Bolland, Kulemin, and Ranger walk to save cap space. Replace them with cheaper third line UFAs or internally with guys who are ready (like Bodie).
    - see what the market is for Franson and Reimer. Prospects and pics are the likely return (and not much for Reimer)
    - use the cap space to re sign Gardiner and to go after a good UFA d man like Greene in LA (if he’s even available).
    - see if there’s a top 2 d man being shopped around the league.
    - sign a veteran or two. This team is too young and clearly lack leadership and since Phaneuf is going nowhere they need to surround him with guys who have been there.

Who knows how possible this is but to me spending money on top slx forwards and top four d men instead of paying third liners like 2nd liners is good cap management.

Chris has some really good points, all except for raymond, hes a 1m cap hit at the moment and top 5 in leaf’s scoring. if they can hold him for under 2m on a 1-3 year term jump on it, hes 28 and has been the best buy of the season solid 3 line with the ability to short term to fill in second line if needed. the real wish would be if they would bundle in what ever picks it takes to land tavares i dont care if its your next 3 number 1′s and 2 roster players (kadri…), that gives you a real number 1 center, bozak a solid number 2. let bolland walk, call up holland as number 3 but that will NEVER happen lol
but yeah they need a number 1 center a number 2 d man aswell and they just dont have the assets to land a star number 1 center and/or a number 2 d man, ride the kids gardiner and rielly and let them keep developing hope that a deal comes to fill one of the holes and hope that in 2-3 years they can get the kids up to speed and plug up the holes they wont be real contenders in the near future

If we are bundling players together, i think it is unreasonable to trade Kadri (23) and gardiner (23) for a guy who is turning 30 in less then 6 months. Not saying staal isnt great, but trading 2 guys who could* be phenomenal in 2 years for a guy whos greatest seasons are behind him. Would much prefer a guy like Tavares (Sundin v2 w/ upgraded hardware) for the pair, and the thing is, if tavares wants to go to tml, then its most likely we’d get him cheaper.
