NHL Rumors: Oilers and Lightning

  • Bruce McCurdy of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers Jordan Eberle’s name tends to appear in trade talk on blogs/twitter/radio.

“He’s the guy with established value” the argument goes, “he’s the one that could be the centrepiece of the deal that lands us that top pairing defenceman [Oliver Ekman-Larsson or P.K. Subban frequently cited here] or that big #2 centre  [ditto Sean Couturier]. Nail Yakupov will/might score more than Ebs in the future, but has lower market value today.”

McCurdy thinks that Eberle will remain with the Oilers.

  • Hope Smoke: Ray Ferraro: “I’m not going 6 years at $6 plus for Callahan. What I’m doing is asking his agent where does he want to go? Give me three teams” … “I then talk to those three teams at the draft and try to get a player for his rights” … “Callahan will get paid, somebody paid Ville Leino a billion dollars to not score. What an embarrassment”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “Respectfully to Drouin, if there is a mulligan on last year’s draft Yzerman and Co probably take Seth Jones” … “Do I think Jones would have an impactful change on this series? No I don’t. He’s still a developing player” … “Seth Jones in this [Tampa Bay] lineup moving forward would have made a huge impact

i bet yzerman disagrees with that statement…drouin averages 2 points a game. ask colorado if they would’ve rather had seth jones than nathan mackinnon… same goes for drouin I’d say.

the difference is — drouin is still in the CHL… mackinnon is in the NHL… also… Tampa has 2 calder trophy *forward* finalists this year… add to that, they were clearly ineffective from the back end in the playoffs this year…

id agree w/ ferraro…. take seth jones if there was a redo..

Sorry I don’t drouin is a amazing player. I think in a year or two everyone will think Tampa made the right choice.

Lol these kids are 18-19 years old. A bit early to start re-assessing drafts.

Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry didn’t play an NHL game until they were 20 while Nikolai Zheredev (picked 4th overall that year) had a pretty good rookie year as an 18 year old with Columbus.

If you assessed their progress after the 2003-2004 season, Zheredev looked like the better player because Getzlaf and Perry were still in the CHL.

I think you need to wait a few years before you can go and declare Seth Jones as being a better pick than Jonathan Drouin.

What if Drouin turns out like Toews and Jones turns out like Hedman? Who would you rather have?

Drouin was a good pick. Jones was a good pick. Way too early to say which one was the better pick.
