NHL Rumors: Red Wings, Alfredsson, Capitals GM Candidates, Flames and Canucks

  • Craig Custance of ESPN: Some early offseason priorities for Red Wings GM Ken Holland.

    1. Add an impact defenseman – the will have cap space this summer as David Legwand, Daniel Alfredsson, Mikael Samuelsson, Todd Bertuzzi, Kyle Quincey, Jonas Gustavsson and Danny Cleary are in the final season of their contracts. It’s not a deep free agent class, but the Wings could look at Dan Boyle and Matt Niskanen. If looking at the trade market, Alex Edler and Christian Ehrhoff could be options.

    2. Sign Danny DeKeyser to a long-term contract – he’s an pending RFA. He hasn’t put a lot of thought on whether he wants a bridge contract or a long-term deal.

    3. Add a scoring winger – the Wings are fine up the middle, but could look at free agent wingers like: Thomas Vanek, Ryan Callahan, Marian Gaborik, Matt Moulson or Jaromir Jagr.

  • Tim Wharnsby: Daniel Alfredsson said that if he plays next season, if would likely be with the Red Wings.
  • Hope Smoke: Elliotte Friedman: “If you’re going to make a [coaching] change, make the change. Let the guy get on with his life. Don’t let him hang there” … “Didn’t sound to me, when Linden took over, that he was too keen on keeping Torts. Maybe that’s changed. If not, make the change”
  • Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington: Gormley lists some GM candidates for the Capitals: Tim Burke (director of scouting for the Sharks), Jim Benning (assistant GM for the Bruins), Ron Hextall (assistant GM for the Flyers), Claude Loiselle (assistant GM for the Maple Leafs), Paul Fenton (assistant GM for the Predators), Bob Nicholson (former president and CEO of Hockey Canada), Craig Billington (VP of player development for the Avalanche), Mike Gillis (former GM of the Canucks), Dave Poulin (VP of hockey operations for the Maple Leafs) and Julien BriseBois (assistant GM of the Lightning).
  • John Shannon: “How long before we hear Wayne Gretzky’s name to run hockey in Washington? He and Leonsis have a very good relationship. 99 wants back in.”
  • Jim Matheson: The Capitals lineup needs an overhaul. Their blueline is average outside of John Carlson and Karl Alzner. Mike Green continually gets hurt. They are average in goal and they need top-six forwards.
  • Darren Dreger: Jim Rutherford could get some interest from the Capitals or Canucks. He may want a break though. George McPhee would make sense in Vancouver or Calgary.

Should be an interesting offseason for the wings. Cleary and Sammy will be gone (finally) and Quincey should also be out. Three question marks are Bertuzzi, Alfredsson and Legwand. I’d take another year of Bert at a discount ($1.5ish?) and Alfredsson also on a discount, as $3.5 was too much for him. Maybe $2.5 for alfie. Legwand never seemed to mesh with the team, and I got the feeling Babcock wasn’t a big fan. He’s definitely not going to get $4.5 from the wings, and he was probably expecting a payday based on his season with the Preds. I think Legwand will only be able to get $3/year with the wings and as a result will end up somewhere else, unless his desire to be in Detroit is that strong. The other factor going against Legwand is Stephen Weiss. With Sheahan stepping it up with the kid line, it could bump Weiss to third line ($4.5m is a lot for a 3rd line center), and leaves Legwand with nowhere to go. Though he was playing wing at the end of the run…

It will be interesting to see if the wings trade Tatar, Nyquist, or Jurco for some defensive help. Resigning Dekeyser (he’s a life-Wing) makes Kronwall – Ericsson, Dekeyser – Smith, Lashoff – Kindl, with Sproul and Oullet hopefully taking over for the bottom pair. But I’d expect to see a new name in there, and I’m guessing all these young guys won’t be here next year. Hard to say what will happen with Lashoff and Kindl, can’t imagine any team actually giving anything up for either. Maybe smith will be the one to go.

I agree on Sammy and Cleary being gone, but Bert should too, and I was a Bert fan last year. But all the youngsters have emerged into NHL players.

Quincey’s play was terrible at the beginning of the season but picked up as the season went along. D-men are going to be hard to come by, Quincey is a good, not great choice.

I would like to keep Legwand, but we already have good center depth. I’d also re-sign Alfie and Monster, and start to consider trading Howard. And I’m a Howard fan. I just don’t see it getting any better for him. Mrazek is a stud. Let him and Monster split games for the most part instead of riding just Howard like we’ve done the past 2 years.

@hankbemis I don’t think there’s a chance they trade any young guys for a dman. They are the future of the wings along with a few still in the AHL and other Jr leagues.

@debeezy did you hear the rumor that holland offered nyquist and tatar for bouwmeester and was rejected? on that same subject, after getting bounced in 5 games, sure seems like trading jarnkrok for legwand to keep the streak alive was a bad move. after all, anyone can have legwand now, including the wings.

@garymagic I don’t mind quincey around but it depends at what cost, and for how long. he currently makes almost $3.8m and I’m guessing will ask for a 4-5 year contract at around $3.5m. It’s not worth it with almquist, oullet and sproul ready to go. Let quincey go, put lashoff and kindl on waivers if you can’t trade them, and trade smith. Get a top 2 D to round out the top 4 of dk-ericsson-kron and let the 3 rookies play for 2 spots.

@garymagic some more… yes sign monster, yes bring up mrazek. yes trade howard. but for what? i’d be very curious to see what would be a fair trade for howard with 5 years at $5.3m a year and a clear loss of the red wings’ confidence (should that happen). do you think you could get a good D out of it? probably not. maybe howard for ehrhoff? i have no clue

@hankbemis Almquist, Sproul, and Oullete are not suitable replacements for Quincey. Not now. Not yet. If our top 3 is Kronner, Ericsson, and DD, DD needs a suitable guy to pair with. And letting Kindl and Lashoff through waivers? Again, not in favor of those 3 young guys. I’d be open to a package that included Kindl, in favor of letting one of those young guys come up, maybe Almquist, but then that depends on what else goes in that package. 2 destinations with the cap space would be CGY and OTT. CGY has Wideman, Giordano, Smid, and Brodie as attractive assets, with Brodie being signed through the next season and being a RFA, and the other 3 being signed till at least ’17.

Obviously Howard isn’t totally to blame, it’s the D’s fault as well, that’s why we need solid guys, not skilled young guys. But still, I’m getting to the point where Howard might be better off somewhere else. But Howard does have a NMC through next season. Would need his consent.

And my trade scenario to OTT or CGY was to be said about Howard, not Kindl.
