NHL Rumors III: Hurricanes, Sharks, Avalanche and Penguins

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Ulf Samuelsson is getting hype as the Hurricanes next head coach.

The Sharks could look to trade Antti Niemi and his $4 million salary. Ryan Miller may not be much of an upgrade. Miller wasn’t able to elevate the Blues over Corey Crawford and the Blackhawks.

If the Avalanche think Alex Tanguay can be healthy enough to be a top-six forward next year, that could make P.A. Parenteau available. They could move him for a defenseman.

Matheson thinks Brent Burns will move back to the blueline next season. Mirco Mueller should get a top-six spot on the Sharks blueline next year.

  • Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: If the Penguins end up losing this series to the Rangers, expect some big changes. Ownership doesn’t like what it’s seeing, and it’s not just a coaching issue. Dan Bylsma’s job wouldn’t be safe. GM Ray Shero would be on the hotseat as well.

Pens should at least explore what Malkin would return in trade.

I absolutely agree with you- unless they want to permanently move him to Crosby’s wing

I’m not sure if Malkin has a no-trade clause in his contract.

But if not, what if some team knocks your socks off, offering a top potentially elite all around D man, plus picks and prospects — you’d have to listen.

I would never suggest Pitt just trades him to make a change, but explore if a team will grossly overpay for him.

Quick thought: Islanders are moving into a new building, and he might be interested in playing in New York. Travis Hamonic, Griffin Reinhart, Ryan Strome and #5 Overall? Islanders might be willing to trade a bunch of chips for a Super Star right now.

I agree. You have won 1 cup with that combo. That trade is doable but maybe you look out west and try to get a goalie as well..

I would also chat with PHX about OEL or Yandle, as the key part of a package.

But again, this is only if Malkin doesnt have a no-trade clause.

As per CapGeek, Malkin has a no-movement clause.

You guys are insane! Malkin is amazing. I wouldn’t trade him unless I’m getting a full roster in return. NTC don’t mean that much especially if the player is willing to go somewhere else. After what I’m seeing in these playoffs I’d rather trade Crosby.

Crosby would abviously fetch more- but we all know thats not going to happen. There is money tied up with Kunitz and Neal- and Malkin an alite player but I think Jeff made sense-..what if you were offered a Vlasic and Pavelski or Kesler and Edler? Doesnt that improve your team…

Personally I think you have to keep Malkin. He does have his issues when things don’t go his way and takes horrible penalties and at times makes plays that you sit and scratch your head wondering what were you thinking. But when he is on he takes over games and out plays everyone, even Sid. Before doing anything with offense, I would start with defense. They have alot of young talent. Why not start using it? Scuderi isnt what he used to be and personally wouldn’t have brought him back. Also don’t think Letang is worth the 7.25 million he will be getting starting next year. I say resign Niskanen and keep him with Maatta. Paul Martin is solid, but need to either add some talent or actually use the young prospects we have. Already seen what they can do when given a chance when pretty much all the defense was injured.

Personally I would try and go after a weber> Malkin trade. I think Nash would add. Pick up an elite winger for Crosby and you got a dynasty. They have the assests to acquire a solid winger and 2nd C weber on when Crosby is on, I don’t think you gotta worry bout puck possession lol

Sid & geno are untouchable in the Burgh. Martin is a force the last two years; Pens should try to re-sign him long-term and rebuild a defence without Orpik, Niskanen and Letang. Despres, Samuellson (may a good trade-bite if his dad sihn as Canes coach) and Dumoulin are NHL-ready. But they have to add a right-handed d-man.
Jussi is great and should stay if he can get re-sign for 4-4,5 m$ p.y. Goc and Stempniak looking good since they are in town and should stay, too. Neal is dissapointing a little bit but works hard with Jussi & Sutter. I would prefer to see following line-up next year:
    Kunitz – Sid – Bennett
    Zolbin – Geno – Neal
    Jokkinen – Sutter – Stempniak
    [player from Letang-trade] – Goc – Adams

    Martin – Dumoulin
    Maata – Scuderi
    Despres – Bortuzzo
    [player from Letang-trade]
