Morning Rumors II: Penguins, Flyers and Red Wings

  • Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Brooks Orpik’s plan would have been to play in the Stanley Cup if the Penguins had made it that far. Orpik’s future with the Penguins is now on hold until a new GM is hired.

“We still have time,” Orpik’s agent, Lewis Gross, told the Tribune-Review. “Brooks isn’t a free agent until July. We’re not worried about Pittsburgh not having a GM right now.”

Orpik’s agent thinks there will lots of interest in him if he hits the open market. Matt Niskanen, Jussi Jokinen and Deryk Engelland are also waiting for the team to hire a new GM.

  • Tim Panaccio:  Brayden Schenn’s (RFA) agent said he hasn’t heard from Flyers GM Ron Hextall, but is not worried at the moment.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: The Flyers don’t have a lot of cap space to work with, only $6.55 million in space with the ceiling at $71.1 million (and it will be lower than that). They’ll need to decide if they are going to re-sign Ray Emery. It might make sense if they package Luke ($3.6 million) and Brayden Schenn (RFA) for a defenseman or left winger that would complement Sean Couturier and Matt Read.
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit NewsDaniel Alfredsson and Jonas Gustavsson may be the only pending UFAs the Red Wings may consider bringing back from their list of: David LegwandDaniel AlfredssonTodd BertuzziDaniel Cleary, Mikael Samuelsson, Kyle Quincey and Jonas Gustavsson.

i would bring bert back to the wings for a reasonable $. schenn’s would look good on the wings as well but I’m guessing the phlyers would ask for too much. bring back gustavsson and trade howie, then let mrazek and gus split the season. that’s what i’d do…

Completely agree with the goaltending spot changes. I’d like to see Bert stay but would also like to see a better goal scoring right wing in the first line. Who would you say wings may sign to fill in any gaps?

If I was Ken Holland, I would start from scratch. Free all the UFAs this season, but lock up all the RFAs. In addition, buy out Weiss. Trade Howard, Kindl, and this years first round pick for Shea Weber and a second round pick. Don’t sign any big time players in free agency yet. Starting lines should include:
    Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen
    Nyquist, Sheahan, Tatar
Abdelkader, Helm, (Free Agent- Jokinen for 2 years?)
    Miller, Andersson, Glendening

    Kronwall, Weber
    Ericsson, DeKeyser
Smith, (Free Agent- Stralman 2 years?)

(Free Agent- Vokoun for 1 year?)

If they are doing well up to the trade deadline, trade Franzen and a first round pick for Voracec and a third round pick. We don’t need many first rounders because we have lots of prospects. We also know how to turn late draft picks into great prospects.
