NHL Rumors III: Jets, Canucks, Ducks and Maple Leafs

  • Mark Spector of SportsNet.ca: The Jets have trade chips in the 9th overall draft pick, Dustin Byfuglien (who wants to play defense but his coach wants him to be a forward) and Evander Kane. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff,

“Maybe we’re the team that makes that blockbuster,” Cheveldayoff told Sportsnet this week. “You always have that zest, that desire to see if there’s that elusive deal that can help you. But when you do get on the phone, you quickly find out your counterparts are trying to find that same deal. It is a difficult thing.”

“There was a much bigger attitude for… free agency and to want to afford it. To not have to think about cap implications,” Cheveldayoff said. “With the length of the contracts that most players are getting locked up to, and now you’ve got the cap. It’s a little bit different.

“In a cap world, it doesn’t matter who you are. You need to have that infuse of younger talent that keeps on circulating through your organization.”

The Jets top-six forwards and top-three defense are pretty good. The Jets might have to bring 35-year old Olli Jokinen back as they may not have a better option. They are stuck with Ondrej Pavelec in net with his $3.9 million cap hit.

  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Ryan Kesler met with GM Jim Benning face-to-face this week. They are not saying what was said. Kesler will be 30-years old by the start of training camp and wants to win. Benning wants to bring in a goal scorer. The Ducks and Penguins were seriously interested in Kesler at the deadline. The Ducks could be interested at the draft as they need a two-way center to lineup behind Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks have two first round picks. They could send a first round pick, Mathieu Perreault (not the untouchable Nick Bonino) and Kyle Palmieri. Perreault is a pending RFA coming off a $1 million salary this past season. Palmieri has two years left at a $1.46 million cap hit. The Canucks could try and hold off for Devante Smith-Pelly.

IF they made a deal with the Ducks, they could then look at packaging their 6th overall pick this year and last years 10th overall pick, Bo Horvat to the Panthers for the 1st overall pick. The Canucks could then draft Sam Reinhart, and they’d still have the 24th overall pick from the Ducks.

IF they move Kesler and don’t get a long-term center back, they could look at signing Blue Jackets RFA Ryan Johansen to an offer-sheet.

  • Nick Kypreos: The Maple Leafs are aggressive on the trade market. The only players they are not actively shopping are Jonathan Bernier, Phil Kessel, Tyler Bozak and Morgan Rielly.

Like Vancouver would trade Schneider and the 6th for first overall…..

what will it take to get byfuglien and kane in red wings uniform? does it have to be mantha and/or mrazek? could the jets possibly go for franzen and kindl as part of the package? just wondering if there could be a deal put together that would make sense for both teams. i think babs and kenny would take care of kane’s problems. having a guy like byfuglien on the blue line would be great.

    Schneider plays for Vancouver again?

Byfuglien would be good on the Wings. To get Kane and Byfuglien, my guess would be that the jets would want a combination of the following
    1. A young top six forward or top 4 d man (Kindl, Jurco, Tatar type thing)
    2. A blue chip prospect (Mantha, Mrazek)
    3. a High draft pick.

This way Winnipeg would be able to replace Kane and or Byfuglien”s spot with a lesser player while gaining some prospect help for the future.

If I were Winnipeg and trading Kane and Buff that’s what I’d want back.

@Chris, i think he means the equivalent of schneider (he was traded for horvat) and the 6th overall

as for your wpg proposal, i think they would want a lot more than that for both. kane on his own can get a young top 6 + a 1st, i suspect buff could do the same (young top 4 d + 1st), and thats at the bare minimum

well wings would want to dump franzen and kindl so let’s say that has to be part of the trade. franzen+kindl+mantha+1st round? or more? starting to sound not worth it

Buff is quite obviously not a ‘Red Wing’ type player. They don’t take on guys like him.

No mention of JVR? I’d be very surprised if TML traded him.

@Chris I agree with D, You might get one of them for something like that but nowhere near both.

I think it’s highly unlikely that Horvat will be dealt to Florida for their first round pick. Florida is on the record that they are seeking a defenceman, and they would probably want to then swap draft positions with Vancouver; hence, Vancouver would have to cough up a defenceman and their 6th pick for Florida’s 1st round pick.

What might be better for Benning to consider is to try and dump Edler’s salary and then trade to Florida for their first round pick. Perhaps the Canucks can throw in an extra player in an effort to acquire another player in the deal too.

@hankbemis what use is Franzen to wpg, who are trying to get younger? Unlikely we trade kane. Big buff is a great complimentary player and the jets are not at a point in their development where he is useful to the team. As a #3/4 guy on the wings and PP QB he would excel. Most likely a young roster player + first/blue chip gets it done.

I’d imagine it would go like this then: Winnipeg ask for nyquist and mantha or mrazek for byuf, wings say Tatar and pulkinnen. Middle ground is mantha Tatar or nyquist pulkinnen. Dunno if Id even do Tatar pulkinnen if I were the wings. Tatar kindl yes. Nyquist Kindl… Maybe….

Detroit will have about $12-15 million, assuming RFA’s are signed to reasonable deals, and Holland doesn’t have a change of heart regarding the likes of Samuelsson, Bertuzzi, Legwand and Cleary. I think Holland looks at the FA market first, before even thinking about trades. He’s on record saying he likes the team, and taking it slow, and trying to moves the kids in, as apposed to shipping em out.

Buff nor Kane will be coming to Detroit. I really, really don’t see Det making any big splashes. Unless there is a team out there that is willing to trade a top quality 2nd pairing D-man for a 1st round pick and a D prospect, as we have quite a few coming up for the next few years and not enough spots for all of them.

The assets that we have that are worth anything are ones we want to keep. Yes, we’d give up Franzen, but for the same reason we want to be rid of him is the same reason no one is looking to make a deal for big bad Franzen. The player with the most value that I would be comfortable trading is Jimmy Howard, and the return on that would HAVE to include a top D man, as it would strongly improve the D core we would put in front of Mrazek and/or whoever else we put out there.

Faneauf,Clarkson (TML eats 2million off cap) and first round 2014 to the Habs for P.k Subban….or
The same leafs and cap hit to Edmonton for Taylor Hall

I would love to trade Howard but that’s more unlikely than us trading the young guys or trading for Kane or buff. I disagree that Franzen is untradeable, he can score and plenty of teams would be willing to take a chance that a change of scenery will get 20-30 goals and 50 points out of him with a reasonable cap hit.

I’m not saying Franzen is untraceable, just that teams aren’t looking to trade for him. But he could be included in a package where he is not the main piece. And of course reading Howard is a long shot, but he is the piece with the most value imo
