NHL Rumors III: The Rangers and Their Free Agents, Oilers and Flyers

  • Arthur Staple of Newsday: Brad Richards relationship with Martin St. Louis and his leadership role after Ryan Callahan left makes a buyout decision not as easy as it once was. Do the Rangers look for a No. 1 center, possibly Joe Thornton or Paul Stastny? RFAs Derick Brassard, Mats Zuccarello and Chris Kreider will be getting nice raises. Anton Stralman will be getting a big contract, and the Rangers wouldn’t be able to easily replace him if they can’t re-sign the pending UFA. Brian Boyle could be looking for a deal similar to Brandon Prust, four years and $10 million. Mats Zuccarello could get a multi-year deal in the $4 to $4.5 million range.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers only have 11 players under contract for next year, not including Brad Richards as they are expected to buy him out, clearing his $6.67 million salary cap hit. John Moore will likely get a bridge deal in the $1.5 million per season range. Justin Falk requires a $1.024 qualifying offer to retain his rights. Chris Kreider could get a two year bridge deal at around $2.25 to $2.5 million per season. Derick Brassard could get a multi-year deal around $4.5 million a season. He could become a trade chip if contract talks don’t go well. Anton Stralman could get a mulit-year deal in the $4 to $4.5 million per season range on the open market.  Can the Rangers fit that in? If the Rangers don’t re-sign Stralman, they could bring Raphael Diaz back at around $1 million. Benoit Pouliot could get a two year deal in the $2 to $2.4 million per season range. Brian Boyle could get a $3 to $3.5 million on the open market. Dominic Moore could get a $1.5 to $1.75 million a year on a two year.
  • David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Staple’s looks at Mark Spector’s suggestion that the Oilers could look at trading for Braydon Coburn again. The Flyers have $27 million committed to six defenseman next season, with $4.5 million going to Coburn (two years left). Staples wonders if the Oilers would offer Martin Marincin or Oscar Klefbom for Coburn. Would the Oilers offer to take on Vincent Lecavalier in a deal?

I would be surprised if Stralman signed a contract under 5mil per year. Is he worth it? Probably not, but he had a good season and a better playoff performance which will likely raise his stock going into the market. Pouliot is another player I can’t imagine only get paid around 2mil and will likely get paid around 3-3.5mil as hes the type of player many teams will gun for versus the top option like Thomas Vanek. I can’t see the Flyers making that trade with the oilers either. Why would you trade essentially your top D man with an affordable contract for a prospect? Even if they take Vinny you’re just making another hole in the team with no replacement.

What’s with the undervaluing of vinny?

Let’s just compare him to another 2nd line centre who has been getting a lot of talk about.

    Vinny vs Kesler
    4.5 for 4 years vs 5 for 2 years
    Both injury prone
Vinny had one more point in about 10 less games. All while being switched from Line to line (player on all 4 lines) and from wing to centre (played on all 3 spots this year)
Vinny is a great leader and a vet, Kesler has been described as a Locke room cancer
Kesler is a better 2-way player
Both players are on a bit of a decline.

For their prices, I take vinny 10 out of 10 times…. Vinny might not get Philly a lot, but they won’t just give him away.

If he is given a 2nd line spot the guy will average 30 a year.

If the oilers want him it’s not just a “hey let’s take him” it’s more of an addition of a 2nd or 3rd.

With that said, I think he ends up in Nashville for MDZ
But hey, better than giving up a top 6, a top prospect and a first for Kesler like the Nucks want.

Its not about the points with Vinny. Hes a horrible possession player. He literally makes his linemates worse. Pretty much every line combination he played on for the flyers gave up more shots and goals than they took/scored. He also has to be one of the slowest skaters and he can’t keep possession of the puck to make up for it like a Jagr. The age and contract are pretty bad for a team to want to take as well. I also don’t see the evidence where you think Vinny is going to average 30 goals. He hasn’t scored 30goals in 7yrs and hasn’t played a full season in 5. Its pretty clear hes a worse player now than back then so I don’t see it. If the flyers could get MDZ back from Nashville for him I’m pretty sure all flyers fans (myself included) would be ecstatic.

Yes please, take Coburn Edmonton. I know the guys eats minutes, but wow. He always tries to block the shot instead of checking the man in front of the net. He might hit the net in the offensive zone one out of ten shots. Very overrated player, at least here in Philly.
