NHL Rumors VIII: Leafs To No. 1? Stralman, Smith, Kesler, Spezza, and Thornton

  • Gare Joyce of SportsNet: The Panthers No. 1 pick might be available, but they won’t move it for anything along the lines of the rumored Maple Leafs No. 8, Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri. The Leafs would then draft Aaron Ekblad. One senior executive:

“I get the sense that [the No. 1 pick] is out there. [Pathers GM] Dale Tallon has all kinds of young players in the organization and wants to make the playoffs sooner rather than later. Still, Kadri in the package won’t get it done. JVR [LW James van Riemsdyk] might if he’s with the pick and Gardiner… or he might not. Tallon will wait it out to see what the best offer is. It’s a big one to sit tight and close on the floor but I wouldn’t rule it out.”

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings are looking for a top-four defenseman, and could look Rangers Anton Stralman. Stralman is coming off a two-year, $3.4 million deal and could be looking for at least $3 million a season.
  • Scott Powers of ESPN: The Blackhawks and Ben Smith have had initial contract extension talks.

“We’ve had a couple of preliminary conversations with the Hawks but that’s it at this point,” Smith’s agent Jerry Buckley of Buckley Sports Management wrote in an email on Wednesday. “I expect to continue conversations with them in the near future.”

  • Hope Smoke: Nick Kypreos: “The name I hear is if Stl & Van were going to put anything together for Kesler is TJ Oshie” … “Berglund’s available. I think if you saw an Ott-Stl deal with Spezza you’d see Berglund involved in it for sure” … “Same thing with the Leafs and Kadri. The Leafs have been asking about Berglund as well”
  • Jimmy Murphy: Sense from sources is that Shawn Thornton and the Panthers make sense.

haha come on …you have to be kidding JVR and Gardiner with the 8 might get it done? Wake up its not Bobby Orr- its Aaron Ekblad…Leafs wont deal Gardiner OR JVR in that deal…nuff said. Kadri OR Phaneuf different story..heck you can take both if you leave the 8th overall to us

Hahahaha – what a bogus note… This is a deep draft, but there are no bonified superstars… JVR Gardiner and the 8th pick is absurd… does Gary Joyce even watch hockey????

The Leafs might as well shut the doors and close up shop if they ever considered entertaining a deal like JVR + Gardiner + 8th to move up to first. No way JVR and his fantastic contract alone aren’t worth the first pick in this draft. In 2015 with McDavid and Eichel, its going to cost more, but this year there is no absolute #1 pick, 1-3 could go in any order of Ekblad, Bennet, Reinhart. No way the Leafs would pay that ridiculous price.

JVR isn’t going anywhere… Don’t get me wrong ekblad is a solid player and I’m not just saying that cuz I’m from the same area, but I don’t think he’s NHL ready. The leafs should stick to there 8th overall or move up a few spots not first overall…. Look at last year Seth Jones went 4th overall and everyone said he’d go in the top two

Face palm. Whoever they get at 8 will not be much different in caliber than who they can get at 1…at least not enough to justify the deal.

If Nonis does this I’ll lose my mind.

Kadri for Berglund? Sorry but that sounds a lot like the Steen/Stempniak deal….

What a stupid idea for a trade. The number 8 for the number 1 plus Kadri. That will not happen. At # 8 the leafs will just draft Hayden Fleury and keep Kadri. The difference between the 2 PROSPECTS, IS NOT WORTH THE 4TH BEST FORWARD FROM THE 2009 DRAFT.

was this recently edited? everyone is saying no way gardiner + jvr + 8 for 1, but it reads gardiner + kadri + 8 for 1. either way obviously not anywhere close to fair, therefore no basis in reality and was never discussed by GMs. in other news bill peters was just hired as canes coach.

oshie for kesler is ridiculous (st louis would be out of their minds) and the detroit free press seems to be losing it as well (my hometown paper) if they think they’re going to get stralman for $3m in today’s limited and overpaid UFA market.

To be honest, St. James and Khan are probably the only two reporters out of Detroit that are seemingly well connected with the team. But Yea, it looks like she’s just throwing out numbers here.

Stralman was just on record as saying he’s more interested in stability and security at this point in his career. He may very well only be looking at $3m, but term and more than likely some sort of NTC/NMC will be the real selling point for him.

Im thinking if Colorado loses both Stastny and OReilly than they will trade for Spezza. Lots of prospects for Ottawa to chose from. Calvin Pickard the future goalie for Sens

Why would the Leafs deal Kadri? They’re already looking for a center so why would they deal one that hasnt hit his peak yet. Oh yeah I forgot its the Leafs.
They’ll sign Brad Richards to a nasty contract.
