NHL Rumors VIII: Maple Leafs Edition – Franson, Kadri and Gardiner

  • Darren Dreger: The Maple Leafs preference is to re-sign Cody Franson, but they have some trade offers on the table for him.
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “It’s an interesting question in terms of what the asking price might be for Franson” … “Franson’s very valuable to the Leafs. So valuable in fact that their plan is to re-sign him” … “In saying that, Nonis makes it clear every time he speaks publicly, the Leafs are open for business & listening on everybody” … “What I’m told is: whatever’s on the table, he wouldn’t get into specifics, isn’t good enough that they’ll consider making a change” … “It would have to be for either a defenseman or a piece they can put into their NHL lineup or a decent draft pick” … “Either way the Leafs are looking at their options not only with Franson but with their other players”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie: “The Leafs have to get better. There’s no question about that.” … “I would imagine that there are going to be some trades by the Leafs. It’s a matter of finding the right fit” … “Whether it’s Kadri or Franson or Gardiner or whatever the case may be, I’m sure Nonis is aggressively listening or shopping some of these guys a little bit”

not a Leafs fan and try my best to avoid watching them but from what I have seen, am I missing something on Franson? I am asking Leaf fans here because I don’t see any value really.

Franson was all the rave in Nashville, he plays for Toronto and everyone hates, and undervalues him. Plain and simple.

Franson does some things very well (great passer on the PP and good quick shot which he should be allowed to use more) and some things not so well (he’s not overly agile and turns the puck over too much). Remember when evaluating players that some of their downfalls are as a result of the system the play in. Franson wouldn’t turn the puck over as much in a place like LA where they don’t try to stretch the other team out and score off the rush all the time. In Toronto, with their poor defensive coverage and their ability to score off the rush, his faults are exposed.

He’s not a top 2 guy. He’s a #4 or #5 but certainly has value due to his offense.

Do not trade Gardiner and Kadri unless it is for a good player of similar age. These guys have barely played 2 seasons of NHL hockey (barely over 164 games) and need a lot more than that before they can be jettisoned in favour of older guys.

No more trading of players before they know what they have. That way they can avoid the Steen for Stempniak or Rask for Rayrcort type deals that always seem to come back and haunt them.

All the rave in Nashville? Not sure I remember that.

Agree. An asset then and now, but nothing to rave about.

Franson is the Leafs only RHD. Not a huge factor, but it’s nice to have at least one somewhere in the lineup, even if only for the change of dynamics that the opposition needs to be aware of.

I’m guessing ken holland has submitted one of those offers. I wonder what it is…

I don’t think Holland’s going to jump the gun on any trades right now. He’ll look to FA first, if he strikes out there, then he’ll go the trade route.

Not saying he isn’t inquiring about asking prices, but I’ll be surprised if he submits any actual trade offers this early.

I would not trade Franson he is a good defenseman. I would look a trading, Gleason, Gunnerson, kadri and Phaneuf. Leafs need two way forewards to help defense. Kadri is not very good defensively, leafs have Peter Holland much better player. Gleason is slow, culture change starts with Phaneuf Gunnerson can be replaced with just about anyone from marlies.
