NHL Rumors III: Smoke in Leafland – Bolland, Raymond and Franson

  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “The Leafs perspective on this is, why present an offer that chances are Bolland & his agent will sit on until free agency?” … “I think this will play out very similar to Bozak where they get into the real hard push of negotiating in the 11th hour” … “The Leafs are comfortable waiting to find that out. They want Bolland. I don’t think there is any question about that”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “You also have to look around the room at the other free agents. Raymond was a terrific find at a $1 million” … “I know that there has been no dialogue with Raymond’s group either to whether or not they want to re-sign him. I’m sure they would” … “Raymond isn’t going to play for $1 million. He’s going to be in that class of $2.5 to $3 plus” … “It’s not just Bolland, there is a lot of work that needs to be done in Toronto.”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “the Leafs are focused on re-signing Franson. Is he going to get a bump? Obviously he is. It’ll probably be in the $3s” … “I’m not sure what the term would be but there is a strong appetite to keep Franson in the fold” … “The Leafs are open to moving Franson if the offers sweeten between now and the draft” … “You have to look at the upside of Franson. What he brings offensively and defensively. The man’s a workhorse” … “There’s terrific interest in Franson around the game. Leading up to the trade deadline there were lots of calls coming in on him” … “That’s a pretty good indicator. When you have a player that other GMs are calling about & persistently looking for chances are you better do what you can to hold onto that player”

Dreger obviously is a lot more in the know than us fans, but I think he is missing the mark on these guys. Bolland, I have read very often, wants 5/yr , for several years. I doubt the Leafs can justify that kind of contract, so , I see the chances at better than 50/50 , that Bolland moves on. Raymond is a neat little powder puff who can certainly score and skate, but again, the dollars wont make sense…and, Raymond epitomizes what the Leafs were all about last year. Speedy, talented , soft. Sorry, MayRay….bye bye. And Franson , I believe is headed out the door , too. Yes, he brings some desirable elements, but I see him as a trade chip. And a good one. To get, you need to give. This is where Franson fits , and so again, I think he will be moving on. Three decent players , but given how easy the Leafs were to play against last year, I would be shocked if any of these guys were retained . Bolland is hard to play against, but his injury history and desire to score the big payday are reasons why he likely moves on.

Dreger may may some insider information at times but he also blows smoke a lot, like when he don’t have valid information. Like all the media.

I expect the leafs to try to grab the 5th or 1st pick this year… they have a lot of pieces that are desirable by the hungry teams ATM… Panthers+Isles.

Personally, I think there is a good chance of the shit hitting tha fan, just because of the situations that certain teams like the Panthers, Isles and Oilers have found themselves in. Even the Sabres+Ducks and their excess riches, spells trade movements… should be exciting to say the least.

Get rid of Franson….minus 20 playing against mostly third and fourth line opposition. He is soooo soft and slow…..his size and modest offensive skill makes everybody think he has “potential.” As Bobby Cox said….potential means you can’t play a lick now. Franson is not a 21 year old. The outdoor game he hit Abdelkater on the wall, released and Abdelkater beat him to the front of the net and scored. That’s lazy and lack of attention to detail; a hallmark of Franson. Gas his ass. Nashville dumped him for a reason.
