NHL Rumors I: Canucks, Red Wings, Predators, Flyers and Panthers

  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: With Canucks signing Ryan Miller, it’s believed that Jacob Markstrom has asked for a trade if they can.

“That situation could work itself out over the summer,” Benning said. “The teams that are interested may have to move out another guy.

“We’re exploring that for Jacob. But if that doesn’t happen, Jacob comes to camp. He has a good attitude. He understands the situation.

“Look at Minnesota last year. They went through about five goalies.”

  • Helene St. James: As the Red Wings continue to look for a right-handed defenseman, they could look at Sabres Tyler Myers. He carries a $5.5 million salary cap hit. The asking price for Myers would start with one of Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar or Tomas Jurco. The Sabres might ask for Anthony Mantha, but he’s not going anywhere. The Red Wings would also likely need to add a high draft pick and potentially another player.
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: With the Senators signing David Legwand, it eliminates one of the Flyers trading partners for Vincent Lecavalier. It could give the Predators a bit of leverage and power in negotiations. The Preds may be the only team interested, so they may not have to rush into a deal.
  • George Richards: (answering question) Hasn’t heard any talk of Panthers trades coming.

If Vinny just actually works out in the offseason I don’t even really want to see him go…. but despite him scoring 20 goals last season, I still felt pretty disappointed with his performance, especially because he did start the season off pretty strongly and really lost his way after his injury for more than half of the season. He started to come back at the end of the year, but being shuffled around lines and playing different positions every night wasn’t helping.

I know there is a cap issue, and I’m not sure what the deal with Prongers LTIR (4.9mil) is, but once his LTIR kicks in they would go from 3 mil in the hole to having 1.9 in cap space… and most of that would be used to bring up Laughton at his .9 mil.

That is tight, but it gives you just enough wiggle room incase they need some help due to injury… and leaves you with this lineup:

    Simmonds-Giroux-Voracek
    Vinny-Schenn-Read
    Raffl-Coots-Umberger
    Rinaldo-Laughton-Akeson (Rosehill HeaScrtch)

    Timonen-Coburn
    Streit-Schenn
    Macdonald-Grossmann (Schultz HeaScrtch)

    Mason
    Emery

Honestly… if the young core like Giroux, Voracke, Simmonds, Schenn, Coots, Read, Raffl all improve even just a little bit… you have 7 20 goals scorers again and offense will be in the top 1/3 of the league again. It obviously all comes down to Defense and Berube getting his system down pat and 2nd nature to these guys by the end of training camp….

Personally, I think that Simmonds-Giroux-Voracek could be one of, if not the best line in hockey if Berube puts them together. And the greatest thing about that would be, they would all grow together for at least the next 3 years. Giroux-26, Voracek and Simmonds- 24….

I just hope Berube recognizes it… I was praying for this combination since before last season, before Lavy got canned. Seriously can’t believe it is the only top line combo they didn’t try…. They tried Schenn, Raffl, Vinny, Rinaldo, Read and obviously Hartnell…. Its a horrible sin to not see that Giroux with Simmonds equals a 50 goal season from Simmonds… its just common sense and I hope he gives it a chance.
