NHL News: The Canadiens Re-Sign P.K. Subban To Eight-Year Contract

  • Montreal Canadiens: The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed P.K. Subban to an eight-year contract.

“We are very pleased to have reached a long term agreement with P.K. Subban. This agreement helps consolidate the future of our team. A key element of our group of young veterans, P.K. plays with a high level of intensity every time he steps onto the ice. Despite his young age, he carries a great deal of experience and brings contagious energy to the team. Defensemen of his level are a rare commodity in the NHL” said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin.

  • David Pagnotta: Subban get a full no-movement clause for the full eight years.

Awful contract.. Subban is a good D but not close to being worth this kind of salary.

Weber, Suter, Pietrangelo, Karlsson, Doughty, Chara, Keith, Kronwall… players I’d pick before Subban in a fantasydraft with a lower caphit than Subban….

    Ya, take it from Cartman.

Complete overpayment! Compare his point production to this year alone. He’s 4th (only by two points), plus/minus is -4. He’s a douche. In best “DEFENSEMAN” overall he’s below Weber, Suter, P-trang, Doughty, Letang, Hedman, Timmo, Keith, Mcdonagh, Chara, etc. The list goes on. Over Payment, dick, tool, and stupid ass. And to others saying it’s been years. Weber signed 2 years ago and Ryan M. signed last year, the guy is an over paid dip shit. Fuck anyone saying I’m jealous

Joe that’s not jealousy, that’s common sense!
Looking at Subbans attitude and what he brings on and off the ice (or more like what he lacks) a more reasonable contract would be.. 4,5-5 a year.

And I’m glad you brought up Hedman cause if this is the type of contract Subban gets for having 1 good year and 1 decent one than Hedman will be up for 10m/y when his contract expires if he continues on the path he’ve started this past season. In 3-4 years the habs will cry themself to sleep over this contract..

Say what you guys want, but this guy is the best player on the Canadiens team! You can’t argue with that. The level of energy he brings is not comparable to any of the other D out there. Yes, you can argue that other players are better than him, but he’s the BEST player on their team and deserve to be paid top dollars! Also the Cap is going to be going up next season, probably in the low 70 range, so his 9M hit right now will seem like a 6M or 7M hit in a few years. If Doughty were to hit UFA this season or next, I’m sure he’ll get paid higher than Subban. Also, Subban will probably named Captain next season if not this. He’s their franchise player just like Price is and deserved every dollar he got.

I love these lists of “better” defensemen. There are only four defensemen active in the NHL that have won the Norris trophy. Four. PK is one of them. Sorry, but that entitles him to more money.

Is it an overpayment, maybe. but i think holysheep said it perfectly. only 4 active players have won the norris, he’s one of them. he’s entitled to cash in on it

@6+7 – Yeah but he didn’t deserve it the year he won, there were better choices. He wins cause he’d scream that the judges are racists if he didn’t. Joe said it best: he’s a duche.. and no he isn’t the best player in habs, that’s Price!

Whoa. Does subban have a history of calling people racists when things don’t go his way? Seems like an unfounded accusation to me. But I don’t know. I’ve never seen any racism in hockey. It’s strangely soothing to watch a black and white guy fight on the ice, and no racism come into play.

No racism in hockey. Do you forget the incident in London with the banana peel. Racism is every where….and by the way I’m white.

@Joe. You are a joke. Better than Timmo, Letang, Hedman? Perhaps not the best but in the top 5.

Yea, there’s plenty of accounts of racist exchanges. On ice or player-to-player is nowhere near the amount coming from dipshit fans, though.

Subban won the Norris trophy that should have gone to Letang who missed 15 games that season and still only had 1-2 less points than Subban if Tanger would have played the entitre season the trophy would have been his he had it in the bag until the injury the 5 best D-Men are….
1 Doughty 2 Webber 3 Letang 4 Suter 5 is a tie between Maata and Trouba

It’s pretty subjective. Probably ask 20 people for their top 5, and more than likely not get any two in the exact same order. I see no point in arguing one way or the other. To me, PK is a great player among other great players.

Whether he deserved to win the Norris, is again subjective. A really good argument can be made for any of the finalists, and even for some that didn’t make the cut. The Hockey Writers Association are the ones who do the voting for most of the trophies. They’re the ones who people should be pissed at, not the player.

Fantasy-wise though, I’d add OEL to Cartman’s list. I’d have PK in there too, but I don’t really value one over the other, unless specific categories are involved, like DEF, BS, and TOI for example, that normally favour dmen more. If its a keeper league, Chara and Kronner would be at the tail end of that list.

  14. Top 5

    08/05/2014 at 8:23 pm

    My top five
    1) Shea Weber
    2) Ryan Suter
    3) Drew Doughty
    4) Duncan Keith
    5) PK Subban

Letang too injury prone and chara is just getting too old. By the way Suter should have won the Norris that year. Showed complete ability in all three zones. Winning the Norris is not all about points, or is it??

Well, tough to say. lol Technically, the Norris is supposed to be for those judged to have the best all around ability during the season. To me, that means both offense and defense, but for the past 20 years, it’s arguable that the offense aspect has played more of a factor. Have to go back to Rod Langway in 1984 before you get to a Norris winner who wasn’t among the leaders in D scoring their season.

Personally, I’d like the league to spring for another trophy, for best defensive dman, then have the Norris for offensive Dman. There’s the Selke, for best defensive forward. Other than Orr twice, the Art Ross has been exclusively for forwards, and I don’t think that will change anytime soon. To me it just seems logical to have another award for the Girardi’s or Seidenberg’s of the league, that may not get recognition due to that their more known for their shutdown abilities
