  •  Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers have signed RFA defenseman Justin Schultz to a one-year contract. ($3.675 million)

“I knew it was going to get done,” he said. “I didn’t want to drag it on into training camp and be a distraction. I wanted to get something done, they were the same way and it worked out well.”

“I think we are both pretty happy in getting it done, having this drag on. I’m happy with the contract. I obviously have to prove myself more to get a longer term. Hopefully I have a good year this year, the team does better and we’ll get it done.”

  • Edmonton Oilers: Oilers GM Craig MacTavish on Justin Schultz.

“I think that Justin has Norris Trophy potential and I don’t think there are too many people who would disagree with me in that regard,” he said.

  • Ian McLaren: Former Bruins 1st round pick Zach Hamill signed a one-year deal in Finland. McLaren notes that Hamill was drafted before Logan Couture, Ryan McDonagh, Max Pacioretty, David Perron and others.
  • Frank Seravalli: The Flyers announced that Ryan White (signed this offseason) had surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. There is no timetable on his recovery.
  • Rick Westhead: Former NHLPA leader Ted Saskin landed a temp job with MLSE earlier this year to consult on legal issues. He doesn’t have a consulting or ongoing relationship with MLSE.

i’m guessing this will sort of set the bar for dekeyser… maybe 3 years at 3.5 mil?

I think both sides are waiting on Alfie. Apparently they’ve been going back and forth the last couple weeks, and I’m sure that Dekeyser and his agent are aware that as long as Alfie is 100% healthy and willing, there’s a really good chance that they bring him back. It’ll probably be a tight fit cap-wise if Alfie come back, but it’ll be easier to massage Dekeyser’s contract structure than it would Alfie. Unless he takes one hell of a pay cut, and they think up of some more bonuses he can easily hit.

You think so huh? Considering they are waiting til at least sept 18 to do any thinking on alfie, that seems unlikely. With $5.27m remaining, I think they will give DK a package worth $3.5/yr, and alfie $1 or 1.5 with some easy to reach goals like you said. Iginla was signed last year for under $2m plus those bonuses. I’d rather have Iggy in the winged wheel (man that would’ve been so cool) but I think that’s the way it will go. Iggy ended up making $6m after bonuses. I’d try to give alfie 2 easy to reach and 2 harder at a mil each… like play 20 games, score 5 goals, as well as 40 points and 2 fights. ha ha
