Rumors II: Boychuk, Staal, Glencross, Ryan and Methot
  • DJ Bean of WEEI: Bruins Johnny Boychuk knows he’s a potential trade candidate due to the Bruins cap situation and unsigned Torey Krug and Reilly Smith, but he’s trying to just focus on being on the Bruins blueline to start the season. His limited no-trade clause expired on May 31st. Boychuk wants to remain with Bruins.

“It’€™s tough to hear, but at the end of the day it doesn’€™t really matter what anybody says,”€ Boychuk said. “If it happens, then you work on that part. But until it does, you can’€™t control it, so you’€™ve just got to keep playing the way that you can and you always want to stay here, but if something happens then it does. But you have no control over it. You want to stay with the guys that you grew up playing with.”

  • DJ Bean: Bruins Johnny Boychuk on trade rumors: “Yeah, but how many years did it take for us to get Kaberle?”
  • Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: The Rangers and defenseman Marc Staal’s camp have had substantive discussions regarding a contract extension.

“We have had some productive discussions with the Rangers with the goal being to secure a long-term extension for Marc,” Paul Krepelka of The Orr Hockey Group wrote in an email to the Daily News.

Staal is entering the final year of a five-year, $19.875 deal and has said on multiple occasions that he’d like to get an extension done before the start of the season.

  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Flames forward Curtis Glencross is entering the final season of his contract and is aware of the what he could be facing: in-season negotiations, trade rumors, and if he’s going to be traded, the decision to approve it or not due to his no-movement clause. It’s also sounding like their may not be another home-town discount.

“I love Calgary. I love the Flames organization. My last contract proves that I love this organization,” he said after skating at WinSport at Canada Olympic Park with the collection of players in town. “But I’ve seen the contracts that are going out now and the comparables, and I’m not going to sell myself short.

“When it comes down to it, I’m an unrestricted free-agent come July 1st and I have a no-move clause in my contract. I’d like to get something done before the season started, but in the long run, the longer we wait, unrestricted free-agency’s July 1st.”

  • Ian Mendes: Senators GM Bryan Murray: “On Bobby Ryan, we’re not going to talk to his people until the year gets underway.” Wayne Scanlan: Murray and Ryan’s camp are not even talking contract numbers yet. He wants to see how the season plays out for a bit.
  • Wayne Scanlan: The Senators are balking at Marc Methot’s asking price, six-years at $5.5 million per season. Bruce Garrioch: There have been no progress in Methot talks. More talks will happen next week.
  • Michael Traikos: Brendan Mikkelson’s agent said he has a few tryout offers: “We’re trying to find the best opportunity for him to play in the NHL this year”
