Rumors: Brewer, Myers, Petry, Wiercioch, Methot and Gardiner
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Eric Brewer was scratched for the Lightning’s first two games, which led to trade talk. TSN’s Bob McKenzie stated over the weekend that Brewer’s name “is out there.”

“The one thing about Brew is he’s a pro, he works his tail off and waits for his chance, but I’m sure he’s not been happy about it. And that’s probably good in a player, I think, you shouldn’t be happy that you are being sat out.’’

“I think, ultimately Brewer, he’s part of the big picture and part of our team,’’ Cooper said. “We are going to need Eric Brewer and Andrej Sustr and Anton Stralman and all these guys all year. So when you get in you have to perform, and I have the utmost confidence that he will.’

  • Chris Nichols on Nichols on Hockey: Pierre LeBrun on TSN 1040 Radio on Eric Brewer, Tyler Myers, Jeff Petry and Senators trade talk. There may not be a market for Brewer as his best days are probably behind him.

Myers is intriguing and a lot of his big money has already been paid out. The Sabres may not even want to trade him, but his name has come up. The Ducks are one team looking to add another defensemen. They had looked at Johnny Boychuk. The Red Wings are also on the lookout for a right-handed defenseman for their top four. Detroit had talks with the Sabres last spring.

The Oilers are not making calls, but teams have called them regarding Jeff Petry.

The Senators have eight defensemen on one-way contracts. Patrick Wiercioch has been a healthy scratch. Need to watch the Marc Methot situation as contract talks drag on.

  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “I can tell you this much every time you throw out Gardiner’s name in trade speculation a day or two my phone will ring from an NHL club wondering if this is just speculation or there’s more to it.” … “The upside of this young man is still significant & nobody knows that better than the Leafs.”
