Videos and Quotes: Flyers GM Ron Hextall on the Trade Deadline

Flyers GM Ron Hextall on the Braydon Coburn trade to Tampa Bay

Dave Isaac of the Courier Post: Flyers GM Ron Hextall.

“We had no intention of packing it in,” Hextall said. “If something made sense for today and the future we’re going to look at it, but we’re not just going to throw away today for a small piece or a secondary piece. We were kind of focused on what we wanted to do and we did some of those things.”

“Those things” have a lot to do with stockpiling for the future. Hextall already got a big haul for Kimmo Timonen last week when Chicago surrendered a 2015 second-round pick and another conditional pick that could be as high as a second-rounder in 2016. With the Coburn deal, the Flyers now have 10 picks in June’s draft.

“We’ve got picks. We’ve got to make them count now,” Hextall said. “This is only the first part. Now we’ve got to make these picks count. We’ve got a lot of work to do. I think when you look at young players, young pieces, young assets, we’ve got a lot of them coming and that’s what excites us. You’re trying to build a top team for an extended period of time and I think we’re on our way to that.”

Dave Isaac: Flyers GM Ron Hextall said they got within $45,000 of the salary cap the other day. He estimates they are $4.5 million under now.
