Outlook for the Season:

It was an awe-inspiring dash to the post-season on the back of career minor-leaguer Andrew Hammond’s goaltending and surging offense from Calder candidate Mark Stone and others.

But then, it was over.

Hammond’s magic faded. Stone’s wrist was hacked. The Sens bowed out to the Montreal Canadiens in the first round.

Rather than overreact to their surprise late-season run, GM Bryan Murray settled on a quiet and patient offseason approach. The team dealt away backup netminder Robin Lehner to clear room for Hammond to act as Craig Anderson’s backup, while clearing the way for college standout Matt O’Connor to start for Binghamton in the AHL. In return, the Sens snagged a first round pick (well-regarded defenseman Thomas Chabot) and ridded the team of David Legwand’s contract.

Eric Gryba was dealt to the Oilers, freeing space for Jared Cowen to move into the top-six and allowing for the promotion of the AHL’s top defender, Chris Wideman.

And that’s it.

Instead of flashy and risky signings, the Senators will instead rely upon development from their young core to guide the team back to the playoffs. With continued development from Stone, Mika Zibanejad, Curtis Lazar, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau, all 23 years old or younger, the Sens may well challenge for a bottom seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs picture again.

As per leftwinglock.com, the Sens lineup figures to look like this:

Sens lineup

Lazar finished ninth on the club with a Corsi For percentage of 51.0, making the young forward a notable omission from these projections. He skated the eighth most minutes at even strength among Sens forwards and should secure a consistent third line role as he looks to better his 15 point output of last season.

After an outstanding rookie campaign that culminated in a Calder trophy nomination, Mark Stone has emerged as the Sens’ new sniper and top line right winger.

Dashboard 1 (3)

His offensive work is outstanding across all categories, indicating that Stone may be on the verge of developing into one of the game’s elite wingers. An added bonus for the Senators is Stone’s supreme work in puck possession. His ability to create shots for and limit shots against are near first-line quality. Only 23 years old and earning $3.5 million for the next three seasons, Stone provides incredible all-around value for Ottawa.

Clarke MacArthur is the unsung hero of the Sens’ first line. The 30-year-old veteran has demonstrated good chemistry skating with Stone and centre Kyle Turris, solidifying the Sens top forward line.

Dashboard 1 (4)

MacArthur’s underlying stats lag just behind Stone’s. His offense is first line quality and his possession work is very respectable. He’s an excellent compliment to the top line, providing gritty play along with the ability to go on offensive hot streaks. He is the industrious motor for the top trio.

Part of the developing nucleus of youngsters, Mika Zibanejad has shown the potential to develop into a strong all-around contributor on the second line. Only 22 years old and in his fourth NHL season, Z-bad is known for his strong shot and heady offensive game, along with reliable two-way instincts.

Dashboard 1 (5)

Already a second-line contributor in virtually all advanced stats categories, the young Swede has managed 0.5 points per game early in his career and will look to build on his career-high 46 points in 80 games last year.

Though his Norris Trophy winning partner earns all of the accolades, defenseman Marc Methot has developed into an essential compliment for captain Erik Karlsson on the Sens’ top defense pairing. The 30-year-old Ottawa native is the defensive conscience that allows Karlsson to act as a rover. Methot is praised for a mistakes-free game based on sound defensive positioning, stay-at-home tendencies, and a (in-)famous hip check.

Dashboard 1 (6)

Not known for his offense, Methot does provide top-four quality scoring. But Methot earns his keep with first-pairing quality defensive metrics, making his partnership with Karlsson one of the best defensive duos in the NHL.

In net, Craig Anderson has long been one of the game’s more reliable netminders. His advanced stats reveal a good-quality goaltender, capable of providing consistent results in net.

Sheet 2 (2)

However, Anderson has proven brittle over his career and is now 34 years old. With Andrew Hammond backing up, the Sens can always hope that the Hamburglar can save their season if called upon for a long stretch as he was last season.

Trending Up:

Mike Hoffman – fast and known for his dynamite release, Hoffman’s defensive deficiencies earned anger – and reduced playing time – from both of his head coaches last season. Still, after scoring 27 goals last year, Hoffman is a true wildcard capable of providing first-line offense if given the chance this season. Count on the 26-year-old winger to mature and approach the 25-goal mark again this season, providing the Sens with excellent scoring depth on the second (or third…or fourth…) line.

Dashboard 1 (7)

Trending Down:

Alex Chiasson – still only 24 years old, the hulking winger scored only 26 points in 76 games last year and saw his development stall. Chiasson lost his arbitration case this summer and is signed on for one more season at $1.2 million. He won’t be relied on for many minutes in a fairly deep forward corps.

Dashboard 1 (9)

Trade Deadline Outlook:

This is a playoff bubble team, largely unchanged from the group that relied on an historic hot streak to sneak into the playoffs at the end of the regular season last year. The team will likely wait until the last possible moment to pull the trigger on any deadline deals. If the team is in contention, and they likely will be close, look for Murray to seek out cheap, veteran wingers to solidify the forwards corps. The team may decide to add a depth defenseman to the bottom pairing if they are in the playoffs mix next February.

* Different sites have different guidelines for who is a ‘prospect.’

1. Nick Paul: Centre – 6’2” /202 lbs – Paul was one of the key players in the trade that sent Jason Spezza to Dallas. Paul has been developing a solid two-way game under Stan Butler in the OHL and has seen his game improve year after year. Last year he eclipsed the point per game pace, scoring 66 points in 58 games and was named to Team Canada winning Gold at the WJC. With his junior career behind him, Paul will make his pro debut with Binghamton where he will continue to develop. Paul has good size, two-way ability, skill and skating ability. Most of his goals will come from within a few feet of the blue paint.

2. Thomas Chabot: Defence – 6’2” / 180 lbs – Chabot had a monster season in the QMJHL with a 41 point season in 66 games. He is an elite skater who loves to join the rush, has great offensive instincts, and is reliable defensively as well. He will get his first taste of NHL hockey in training camp before ultimately going back to junior and will have a great chance to represent Team Canada at the WJC.

3. Matt Puempel: Left Wing – 6’1” / 205 lbs – Puempel made his NHL debut last season playing in 13 games, scoring his first NHL goal on March 10th against the Boston Bruins. An injury ended his first look at the NHL, but he will be given a chance to crack the Sens top nine out of training camp. Puempel scored 30 goals in his first pro season in the AHL, but offensively he suffered the sophomore slump last year, despite the NHL call up.

4. Colin White: Centre – 6’0” / 183 lbs – White has committed to play for Boston college after plaing in the USHL for team USA last season, where he scored four goals and 13 assists in 20 games. A small sample size for sure, which is one of the knocks on college hockey – the low number of games played. Still, the Sens are high on White, whose two-way play has drawn comparisons to Bostons Patrice Bergeron. He likely has a lower offensive ceiling than Bergeron.

5. Shane Prince: Left Wing – 5’11” / 190 lbs – Prince had his best season in his third year as a pro, scoring 28 goals and 65 points. He made his NHL debut, playing in two games where he had his first NHL point (an assist). Prince will try to make the Sens but because he lacks ideal size and is not very physical, he really needs to be in the top six, that’s likely going to be in the AHL barring injuries. He would have to clear to waivers to be sent to the AHL.
