Ryan to meet with Ducks this week … Khabibulin to appeal 30 day jail sentence … Savard to attend Bruins camp … Souray could attend Oilers camp … Price to Strike?

  • Edmonton Journal: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has said that Sheldon Souray could be at training camp if he isn’t dealt before. “We know he would rather not be in Edmonton. We’d like to make a deal if we could and it may take until the start of camp or just before. “We don’t have anything right now that would help the Oilers,” he said.
  • Stu Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: Nikolai Khabibulin was given a 30 day jail sentence in his drunk driving case. Khabibulin’s lawyers plan on appealing, which would allow him to attend training camp, and might keep him out of jail for the entire season. Additional discipline from the league and/or team may come at a later date. Khabibulin will enter the leagues substance abuse and behavioural health program.
  • Mike Boone of Habs Inside/Out: According to a tweet by Michel Godbout (CBC-Montreal reporter), Carey Price is looking for $3 million a year or he’s going to strike.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Sources tell CSNNE that the Boston Bruins fully expect Marc Savard to attend their training camp. Savard is penciled in as their #1 center between Nathan Horton and Milan Lucic. Tyler Seguin is expected to play left wing with Patrice Bergeron and Mark Recchi.
  • Chris Kuc via twitter: Marty Turco wants to play between 55 and 65 games next season for the Chicago Blackhawks.
  • Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News: Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall underwent arthroscopic knee surgery yesterday. GM Ken Holland expects him to be ready to go by the start of training camp. Kirk Maltby and the Wings could agree to a deal by the end of the week.

Tomas Kaberle Trade Situation Brewing

The Tomas Kaberle potential trade situation appears to be coming down to the wire. This seemingly never ending story will come to an end tomorrow night at midnight one way or the other, but as it stands right now there really isn’t anything new to report.

We will be following the situation closely, and will update any situation that occurs, but for now we wait…

For all the Maple Leaf fans out there, I sure hope Brian Burke knows what he’s doing here. I would think that keeping Kaberle after all of this, and extending his contract beyond next year, isn’t really an option anymore. All the talk of “being professional” and “it’s just business” is just that, talk.

You have to think that Kaberle has already left Toronto emotionally, and to bring him back next season and expect him to be “professional”, is ridiculous.

How would you feel if you were in the same position with your career? You can say that it’s part of being a professional athelete, that it come’s with the territory when you make all that money, but that’s niave. See, once you make all that money it becomes less important, financial worries take a backseat to other concerns, concerns that the majority of the public ignore while focusing on making money themselves.

Respect, Loyalty, Legacy, etc… These are all currencies to appeal to athletes who already have money to give more to the team. How else do you get a bunch of millionaire’s to block 100 mph slapshots with their bodies? I’m not suggesting that Kaberle was the leagues best shot-blocker of course, but there is no doubt that whatever intangibles the Maple Leafs were getting from the man behind the professional died this summer.

With this in mind, I’m inclined to think Tomas Kaberle will be moved tomorrow at some point, the big question will be whether or not Brian Burke get’s the big return he’s been seeking.

Tampa Bay acquires Simon Gagne

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired Simon Gagne from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News (via twitter) confirms that the Flyers will receive Matt Walker and 4th round pick for Gagne. Seravalli also thinks Walker will be sent to the AHL to avoid the cap hit.

Walker is a $1.7 million cap hit for the next 3 years according to CapGeek.com. Gagne is a $5.25 million cap hit for this season, a UFA afterwards.

Simon Gagne was drafted 22nd overall in 1998. In 664 career games, Gagne has scored 259 goals, 265 assists for a total of 524 points.

Matt Walker was drafted in the 3rd round by the Blues in 1998. He spent parts of 5 seasons with the Blues, before playing 1 season in Chicago, before moving on to Tampa last year. In 306 games, he’s scored 4 goals and added 26 assists to go along with 444 PIMs.

Initial thoughts were that a goalie could be include, but that was not the case. NHLSourcesSay, say it could be Mike Smith and prospects. Erik Erlendsson is saying Smith, or any other goaltenders, are not involved.

Matthew Lombardi Signs With The Nashville Predators

“Matthew Lombardi is headed out of the desert and into the Music City, signing a three-year, $10.5 million contract with the Nashville Predators.

The 28-year-old centre had spent the last two seasons with the Coyotes before becoming a free agent.” (Source:TSN)

It’s just my opinion but this is the guy the Calgary Flames should have brought back…

Chris Mason Signs With Atlanta Thrashers-Atlanta also Trades for Ladd

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed free agent goaltender Chris Mason. The deal is worth $3.7 Million over 2 years with a $1.850 Million cap hit.

I’m surprised that Mason went so cheap but this appears to be a bad year to be an un-restricted free agent goaltender. It seems like teams are only willing to pay blue chip, franchise goaltenders and the list that qualify for that title is small and shrinking.

UPDATE: The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired Andrew Ladd from The Chicago Blackhawks for defencemen Ivan Vishnevsky and a second round pick.
