Hockey Night In Canada’s “Hotstove” video
Posted by Derek in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Opinion, NHL Trades, NHL Videos on February 7th, 2010
Every week during the second intermission of the CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada broadcast, they regularly have their “Hotstove” (Source:CBC.ca) segment, where trades and trade rumors are discussed. In last night’s edition they analyzed the Ilya Kovalchuk trade by Don Waddell of the Atlanta Thrashers to the New Jersey Devils.
The discussion was between host Ron MacLean, Pierre LeBrun, and Elliotte Friedman in studio with Mike Milbury via satellite from Washington.
The very fact that the CBC uses the opinion’s of Mike Milbury as an “expert” voice based on his previous role as GM of the New York Islanders is a joke in my eyes.
Here’s a quick summary of “Mad Mike Milbury” and his handy work with Ilses.. (Source: Wikipedia.com)
“He is a well-known figure in the National Hockey League for his controversial (and often quotable) style, as well as for his penchant for blockbuster trades.
During several of the years that Milbury served as Islanders GM, the team’s ownership mandated that he operate the team on an austere budget. In 1999 he was forced to trade star scorer Zigmund Palffy because team owners no longer wanted to pay his multi-million dollar contract.
However, Milbury has also been criticized for the many decisions he made in which payroll or orders for upper management were not factors. Many young players and prospects that Milbury traded away went on to have distinguished careers, often eclipsing those of the players he received in return. He has traded away defensemen Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, and Bryan McCabe; goalies Roberto Luongo and Tommy Salo, as well as forwards Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Tim Connolly, and Raffi Torres. Milbury has also come under fire for his draft day decisions such as choosing Rick DiPietro first overall in 2000 over Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik; as well as his decision to include the 2001 second overall draft pick (Jason Spezza) as part of the Alexei Yashin trade.
In June 2006, Milbury stepped down as Islanders GM to accept a position as Senior Vice President of Charles Wang’s sports holdings. In an appearance on Mike and the Mad Dog, Wang did not challenge a suggestion from the hosts that he “fired” Milbury. Milbury resigned from his Senior VP job in May 2007. He said that he missed making hockey-related decisions and would be open to a hockey operations job in another organization.”
You have to realize that this is television after all, and Mike does have a loud opinion. It’s no accident that he usually goes first with his out-spoken opinions, only to be slammed down by the rest of the panel. You can see for yourself around the 2:10 mark when LeBrun says “my opinion probably doesn’t matter, I wasn’t a GM like you Mike…” and you can see Friedman snickering at the sarcasm, just like the rest of us were snickering at home at the back-handed insult.
It really doesn’t matter what point Milbury’s trying to make or how legit it might be, I always find myself opposed to his opinion, like somehow I’ll find myself guilty of trading away all that youth in the Isle by association.
That said, I think he was trying to say that Waddel waited to long, essentially limiting Kovalchuk to being a rental player to prospective trade partners. I’m not sure what difference it would’ve made if he made the deal in August vs February, being as EVERYONE KNOWS that regardless of where Ilya Kovalchuk is playing come July 1st, HE WILL test free agency to try and maximize his profits, making him a rental player no matter what Don Waddell did or didn’t do.
Personally, I found it surprising that Lou Lamoriello of the New Jersey Devils would make a deal for a rental player, it’s not really his style, but he really didn’t give up much considering the potential impact a guy like Kovalchuk could provide for the Devils. On the other hand, if you take a look at Kovalchuk’s playoff record (which is limited of course) he has played in 4 games, all loses, with 1 goal and 2 points total.
I think we’ll have to wait and see if Ilya Kovalchuk can produce for the Devils in the playoffs before we can really say who got the better of this deal or what mistakes were made, Milbury’s opinion not withstanding.

Around the Boards: Players being shopped, coveted … Savard’s contact under investigation … Contract talks for some
Posted by Mark in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on December 6th, 2009
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- In their search for scoring, the New York Rangers have set their sites on an injured player, Pavol Demitra, once he gets healthy. Demitra is still recovering from his second shoulder surgery, and could return after Christmas. Demitra is a UFA at the end of the season and brings a $4 million cap for this season.
- The League will be investigating Marc Savard’s 7 year extension, which isn’t much of a surprise after looking at his yearly salaries: $7 million, $7 million, $6 million, $5 million, $1.5 million, $525,000, $525,000.
- The Oilers have Sheldon Souray’s name out there, and he was offered to an Eastern Conference team in a 4-player deal.
- The Florida Panthers have been contact teams in an attempt to make a deal to improve their club, they need to make the playoffs this year.
- The Nashville Predators will look to locking up goaltender Pekka Rinne, but might have trade defenceman Dan Hamhuis at the deadline as the Predators might not be able to afford him.
- Aaron Ward of the Hurricanes has drawn interest from the Sharks, Senators and Blue Jackets. Teams are also calling about Ray Whitney, but Rutherford will give Whitney the choice as to where he’d like to go (if that team is interested).
- Vancouver Canucks defenceman, Shane O’Brien, is also being shopped around the league.
- CBC.ca Hockey Night in Canada: Hotstove Video
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- Pittsburgh has done well in locking up many of their core players, but they could have some trouble this off-season with UFA Sergei Gonchar and RFA Kris Letang. The Pens think they might be able to bring both back, but it would have to be at a really friendly price, which might not happen for Gonchar. KHL teams might throw a large amount of money for the 35 year old.
- Contract talks between potential RFA Nicklas Backstrom and the Washington Capitals have gone well, and could be close to finalizing it. Talks with Alexander Semin have gone well, with the sides not talking since the start of the season. Semin is another player that will be in KHL rumors.
- Vincent Lecavalier’s future in Tampa could be up in the air. He has a yearly cap hit of $7.7 million (receiving $10 million season for the next 7 years), which will be extremely hard to move. 3 teams that LeBrun mentions that might have an interest are the Rangers, Kings and Canadiens.
- The Flyers and goalie Ray Emery can talk contract extension after January 1st, and there’s a chance that might happen.
Phil Kessel Makes Maple Leafs Debut
Posted by Derek in NHL News, NHL Videos on November 4th, 2009
Phil Kessel made his long-awaited and highly anticipated debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Maple Leafs have been competing better in recent games, looking like a much better team and showing some defensive aptitude with Jonas Gustavsson starting to emerge as the solid goaltender Brian Burke was hoping for.
Anyone who’s ever played hockey, or watched it for an extended period of time knows that a team will play completely different depending on the level of confidence they have in their goalie. There’s no worse feeling than that of knowing that any mistake you make has a great chance of ending up in the back of your net, and with the “Monster” bailing out his players from time to time you can see a big difference in the team defense with him in the crease.
That said, I would like to get back to Kessel for a minute here. For a guy who hasn’t played in 6 months and is recovering from shoulder surgery, he made an impact on the game playing 23:50 in the game with ten shots. (Wayne Primeau has 8 shot’s in 9 games, granted as a checking forward)
The problem for Kessel was predictable though. In one of our usual hockey chats yesterday, some friends and I figured with all the build-up for Kessel’s debut he would be pressured to try to make a difference right away, and therefore take an unnecessary risk, leaving himself open for a big hit. Guess what happened?
For those who missed it, here’s Mattias Ohlund welcoming Kessel back with open arms…
For the record, that was a classic, clean open-ice hit and I’m all for that. The problem I’m having is the lack of any response from Brian Burke’s “truculent” Leaf team. Where is all this “team toughness” Burke was selling all summer? What exactly is Colton Orr doing on the team anyway? Credit to Matt Stajan for the immediate response but this was the type of situation where a message needed to be sent. So what was stopping Orr from doing it? The Instigator Rule? Hmmmm…Who would you rather lose, Colton Orr to suspension or Phil Kessel to concussion?
To further the point, anyone who saw the overtime goal would’ve seen Ryan Malone slash the puck through Jonas Gustavsson as he was interfering with him in the process, another sign that the Lightning weren’t at all worried about the Leafs “team toughness”.
Let’s make one thing clear, Phil Kessel is the best chance the Leafs have of not giving up a 1st overall pick to Boston next season, with Gustavsson being the 2nd best chance, and the only true top 6 forward on that team. Is this not an investment worth protecting?
Around the Boards: Ovechkin, Staal, MacDonald and Lecavalier Updates
Posted by Mark in NHL News, NHL Videos on November 2nd, 2009
Injuries are the story of the day again, with 2 super stars leaving their games early. It was mentioned on either Friday or Saturday’s Maple Leaf game, that there were 100 players out with injuries. It’s simply amazing the amount of injuries with season.
- Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin is the latest star to go down with an injury, after leaving last nights game in the second period. Boudreau said after the game that Ovechkin is day-to-day with a ‘upper body injury’.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Eric Staal left in the second periods of last nights Hurricanes game with an ‘upper body injury’. The injury is not supposed to be serious.
- Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Andy MacDonald is day-to-day with his ‘upper body injury’, which could have been a lot worse after his face first slide into the boards Saturday night. If he didn’t move his head at the last minute to absorb the boards with the face and neck, he could have had a serious spinal injury. It was definitely a scary sight. For those who missed it,
- Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times: Vincent Lecavalier has once again found himself with new wingers as coach Tocchet searches for a way to get his star center going. Vinny will most likely be centering Drew Miller and Stephane Veilleux.
George Laraque’s New Commercial
Posted by Mark in NHL Videos on October 14th, 2009
Under the category of WTF, George Laraque has a new ad out for ‘Octane’, a 7% alcohol and energy drink.
It was not much of a surprise that women’s groups were not happy with Laraque and called him a sexist. Laraque has offered an apology, saying he was unaware of the premise of the commercial until he arrived on set, but did the ad anyways as the money he received was going to charity. Sure George, like you would have said no to the idea of playing street hockey with some sexy women.
