World Hockey Summit … Kovalchuk side/Devils meet with League … Mitchell deciding soon … Luongo out as Captain?

L

  • EJ Hradek via twitter: Meeting at the League office in New York yesterday involving Kovalchuk’s agent, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks GM Mike Gillis will be looking into the the team’s captaincy between now and the beginning of training camp. Roberto Luongo is still the team’s captain (I’ve never understood that move), but Henrik Sedin could be ready to take over.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffrey Lupul has a re-occurrence of a blood infection in his back and will miss the beginning of training camp, and may not be ready for the start of the season. Lupul is taking antibotics and is not able to do any excercise for the next 4 weeks. He’ll be re-evaluted on September 20th.
  • Jeff Marek of CBCSports: A summary of some happenings at the World Hockey Summit. Slava Fetisov says that Russia isn’t interested in transfer agreements with the NHL but will work together to go the game worldwide. Daniel Afredsson says the larger ice surfaces creates a slower game, perfers NHL ice size. Yzerman said the lack of arenas in Florida has hurt the development of the sport.

And at the end of Day 1, many of us came away with the same question: What is this?

I’d like to say it was a discussion but it really wasn’t. Hockey personalities from across the globe, representing a myriad of different interests, had their say on their “sweet-spot” topics and then answered a couple of questions. Each session lasted no longer than 30 minutes.

  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Now that Bryan Little has signed, the Atlanta Thrashers will now focus on re-signing Niclas Bergfors. GM Rick Dudley also said the team has touched base with Lee Stempniak. They may leave a roster spots open for young players like Patrice Cormier and Alexander Burmistrov.

Notes and Videos from the NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp

NHL.com - An explanation of some of the rule changes being tested on day 1:

NHL.com: Full description and rational for all the rules they will be testing out.

Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Several GMs have said they like the hybrid icing rule, probably the only one that will one day be implemented.

Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Brian Burke may not be a fan of many of the proposed changes, but … “To me this is very innovative and creative on the part of the NHL,” Burke said. “I think we should always be looking at how we play the game and how we can make it better. I think too many rule changes confuse fans, but in general we should be looking at how we play the game to see if there is a way we can make it better for the fans.”

James Mirtle via twitter: Few of these radical ideas will be implemented, no need to be too concerned.

That free agent guy … Bieksa getting some interest … No rush for Modano

  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: A source close to Ilya Kovalchuk is saying he’s still deciding between a couple teams, but the saga is close to ending. One source is saying the Kings have a 50-50 chance of signing Kovalchuk. The New Jersey Devils still hope he’ll sign with them, and reportedly have offered more money.

Kingscast.net: 15 day documentry/short film on the Ilya Kovalchuk-LA Kings saga.

  • Randy Youngman of the OC Register: Is Bobby Ryan not signing the 5 year, $25 million deal with the Ducks because he’s looking for a 3 year deal, as he thinks “he’ll be worth more than $5 million in the final years of the contract”? Or is he trying to get a bigger offer sheet from someone? Ducks GM is looking to add a top 4 defenseman, and Canucks Kevin Bieksa is drawing their interest. San Jose and Columbus have also shown some interest.
  • Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Mike Modano is no closer to making a decision if he’ll be joining the Detroit Red Wings, but they appear to fine with letting him take his time. Apparently there is an offer on the table for 1 year at $1.25 million.

Boston: Buyout for Ryder, trade Wheeler? Kaberle and more for the 4th overall pick? Boston to trade up for #1?

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: GM Chiarelli says that one of either Hall or Seguin will have an impact on the how the organization will move forward in the future. “Yes,” said Chiarelli, “it will have a bearing in what direction we go in.” Dupont notes that Michael Ryder could be bought out, which would save them $2.64 million against the cap. Marco Sturm will make $3.5 million next year but can’t be bought out due to the fact that he has a knee injury, but if they could be convince that recovery is too long and he were to retire, he’d come off the books. Blake Wheeler and his $2.85 million could be dealt.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The Blue Jackets may be under pressure this year to make the playoffs, and could the #4 overall pick be available? Simmons thinks that Brian Burke could offer Tomas Kaberle and more for the pick.
  • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: It’sbeen rumored that the Bruins favor Taylor Hall over Tyler Seguin, and if they want to ensure they get him, they could attempt to make a deal with Edmonton for the #1 overall pick. The Bruins are already deep at center, so Hall would be a better fit for them. The Oilers are in need of centerman more than they are of wingers. Chiarelli hasn’t met with Oilers GM, Steve Tambellini yet, but he plans on it. Harris wonders what it would take to move the one spot, Blake Wheeler or Tim Thomas?

Ovechkin Hits Campbell from Behind … Weight’s Career Over? Cogliano Would Like to Stay in Edmonton

  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Chicago Blackhawks may be without defenseman Brian Campbell for the remainder of the season with a broken collarbone, after being hit from behind by Alex Ovechkin (youtube video below). The Blackhawks probably won’t agree with Ovie’s comments, “It was not a hard hit,” Ovechkin said. “I just pushed him. I respect everybody, but on the ice it can’t be everything. We play for our team and make some hard hits and sometimes you get hurt. It’s a hockey game. He fell bad, and that’s probably why it looks bad.” Ovechkin received a 5 minute major and a game misconduct.
  • Bill Lankhof on Slam Sports: Andrew Cogliano hasn’t had the season he’d hoped for. Cogliano found himself on the 3rd and 4th lines, and subject to many trade rumors leading up to the trade deadline. The 22-year-old would like to stay in Edmonton, but there are no guarantees, as he’s one player the Oilers have that might be back something nice. He has worked his way back to a top 6 forward on the Oilers the past couple weeks.
  • Dan Martin of the NY Post: New York Islanders captain Doug Weight will be out for the remainder of the year after having surgery to fix a torn rotator cuff and labrum. There is some thought that this could be the end of his NHL career. If the injury heals well, he hopes to return next season.
  • John Tranchina of the Denver Post: Both Cody McLeod and Stephane Yelle left yesterday’s Avalanche game with leg injuries. The Avalanche are already without Brandon Yip, David Koci, David Jones and Ruslan Sulei.

Vinny Staying in Tampa? Modano Decided to Stay … Chelios Recalled … Cherry On Headshots Videos

  • Martin Fennelly of the Tampa Tribune: New Tampa Bay Lightning owner, Jeffrey Vinik: “I have no problem having Vinny Lecavalier on the hockey team,” Vinik said. “He’s a great player, he’s an elite player, he’s part of the strong team we have here. All I can say is that this franchise is not going to be constrained by financial resources.” … “I’m going to invest for the long term. This franchise is not going to be constrained by financial resources.”
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mike Modanno was given the option by GM Joe Nieuwendyk to play for a Stanley Cup contender in what could be his last season. 3 teams asked about Modano’s availability, but he decided to remain with the only organization he’s known. Washington was one of the teams that inquired.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The 74-year-old 48-year-old Chris Chelios was recalled by the Atlanta Thrashers. Despite being so old, Chelios was pretty productive  in the AHL this year. In 46 games he had 5 goals and 17 assists, and was a plus 34.
  • Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: As the end of the season nears, and even with Semyon Varlamov’s return, Jose Theodore could be the number one goalie for the Caps in the playoffs.

Hockey Night In Canada’s “Hotstove” video

Every week during the second intermission of the CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada broadcast, they regularly have their “Hotstove”  (Source:CBC.ca) segment, where trades and trade rumors are discussed. In last night’s edition they analyzed the Ilya Kovalchuk trade by Don Waddell of the Atlanta Thrashers to the New Jersey Devils.

The discussion was between host Ron MacLean, Pierre LeBrun, and Elliotte Friedman in studio with Mike Milbury via satellite from Washington.

The very fact that the CBC uses the opinion’s of Mike Milbury as an “expert” voice based on his previous role as GM of the New York Islanders is a joke in my eyes.

Here’s a quick summary of “Mad Mike Milbury” and his handy work with Ilses.. (Source: Wikipedia.com)

“He is a well-known figure in the National Hockey League for his controversial (and often quotable) style, as well as for his penchant for blockbuster trades.

During several of the years that Milbury served as Islanders GM, the team’s ownership mandated that he operate the team on an austere budget. In 1999 he was forced to trade star scorer Zigmund Palffy because team owners no longer wanted to pay his multi-million dollar contract.

However, Milbury has also been criticized for the many decisions he made in which payroll or orders for upper management were not factors. Many young players and prospects that Milbury traded away went on to have distinguished careers, often eclipsing those of the players he received in return. He has traded away defensemen Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, and Bryan McCabe; goalies Roberto Luongo and Tommy Salo, as well as forwards Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Tim Connolly, and Raffi Torres. Milbury has also come under fire for his draft day decisions such as choosing Rick DiPietro first overall in 2000 over Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik; as well as his decision to include the 2001 second overall draft pick (Jason Spezza) as part of the Alexei Yashin trade.

In June 2006, Milbury stepped down as Islanders GM to accept a position as Senior Vice President of Charles Wang’s sports holdings. In an appearance on Mike and the Mad Dog, Wang did not challenge a suggestion from the hosts that he “fired” Milbury. Milbury resigned from his Senior VP job in May 2007. He said that he missed making hockey-related decisions and would be open to a hockey operations job in another organization.”

You have to realize that this is television after all, and Mike does have a loud opinion. It’s no accident that he usually goes first with his out-spoken opinions, only to be slammed down by the rest of the panel. You can see for yourself around the 2:10 mark when LeBrun says “my opinion probably doesn’t matter, I wasn’t a GM like you Mike…” and you can see Friedman snickering at the sarcasm, just like the rest of us were snickering at home at the back-handed insult.

It really doesn’t matter what point Milbury’s trying to make or how legit it might be, I always find myself opposed to his opinion, like somehow I’ll find myself guilty of trading away all that youth in the Isle by association.

That said, I think he was trying to say that Waddel waited to long, essentially limiting Kovalchuk to being a rental player to prospective trade partners. I’m not sure what difference it would’ve made if he made the deal in August vs February, being as EVERYONE KNOWS that regardless of where Ilya Kovalchuk is playing come July 1st, HE WILL test free agency to try and maximize his profits, making him a rental player no matter what Don Waddell did or didn’t do.

Personally, I found it surprising that Lou Lamoriello of the New Jersey Devils would make a deal for a rental player, it’s not really his style, but he really didn’t give up much considering the potential impact a guy like Kovalchuk could provide for the Devils. On the other hand, if you take a look at Kovalchuk’s playoff record (which is limited of course) he has played in 4 games, all loses, with 1 goal and 2 points total.

I think we’ll have to wait and see if Ilya Kovalchuk can produce for the Devils in the playoffs before we can really say who got the better of this deal or what mistakes were made, Milbury’s opinion not withstanding.
