Firing Sutter Would Still Leave the Flames in Trouble … Wings FA’s will have to wait … Seidenberg’s and Kuba’s seasons could be over

- Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: If the Flames were to fire Sutter, it still wouldn’t come close to solving the Calgary Flames issues. Questionable trades and some key players with several years left on their contracts will handcuff the team in some ways. Kotalik, Hagman, Stajan, and Higgins were brought in to help score some goals, they combined totalled 11 goals and 86 games.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Francis put chances of GM Darryl Sutter getting fired at 50%, chances of coach Brent Sutter getting fired at 25%, the chances of Iginla getting traded at 20%.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: Contract talks involving any of the Detroit Red Wings free agents will have to wait until after the season, as they don’t hold talks during the playoffs. If Nicklas Lidstrom retires or not will be the big decision coming out of Detroit. If Jiri Hudler returns from Russia to join the Wings will also have an effect on what they will do. The Wings currently have 13 players signed for next year at $40.8 million. Tomas Holmstrom and Todd Bertuzzi are both most likely to be re-signed. RFA’s Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller will most likely all be resigned.
- The Fourth Period: Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne are unsure if they are going to return next season, or retire. The Ducks would welcome both back. The fates of Saku Koivu and Aaron Ward returning to the Ducks next season is uncertain.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Dennis Seidenberg, picked up at the trade deadline, will be out for 8 weeks after he had surgery earlier this week repairing the “flexor carpi radialis tendon in his left forearm.” Seidenberg joins Mark Stuart, Andrew Ference and Marc Savard as injured Bruins.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators defenseman Filip Kuba underwent surgery on a herniated disc on Tuesday and will be out for a minimum of 4 weeks. So at the earliest he’ll be back in the second round, but most likely it would be longer. Kuba has already been out for the last month.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: The 42-year old Mark Recchi hopes to be back with the Bruins next season. Recchi has played in every game so far this season, recording 17 goals and adding 25 assists. Recchi is third in goals and points for the offensively challenged Bruins.

- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports:
- The Leafs wanted to send Jeff Finger to the Ducks instead of Jason Blake, the Ducks said no.
- Friedman thinks the Canucks might have been scouting Tomas Plekanec the other night, though he thinks there won’t be a deal.
- The Blues probably won’t deal any of their young core, including David Backes. Eric Brewer could be had though.
- The Kings have the money and assets to make a run at Kovalchuk or Lecavalier. The Thrashers would want Wayne Simmonds, but the Kings may be reluctant to do that.
- Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside of ESPN: LeBrun and Burnside talk about potential Ray Whitney suitors. Teams that might be interested are the Senators, Bruins, Kings (if no Kovalchuk or Lecavalier), Rangers, Canucks, and 2 dark horses, the Coyotes and Predators
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: The Calgary Flames may not be done dealing. Sutter may swing for the fences with Ilya Kovalchuk, or look to add a player like Ray Whitney, Alex Tanguay, or maybe Kristian Huselius.
- James Murphy of NESN: The Bruins may be looking to acquire Blues forward Keith Tkachuk. They almost had a deal last year that would have sent Phil Kessel to the Blues for David Perron and Keith Tkachuk.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens will be without Michael Cammalleri of 6 to 8 weeks with a damaged MCL. Cammalleri joins the list of Andrei Kostitsyn, Paul Mara, and Jaroslav Spacek on the sidelines.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Jay McKee, a healthy scratch last night, might interest in the Chicago Blackhawks. The ‘Hawks might also look at Aaron Ward, Garnet Exelby or Sean O’Donnell.
- James Murphy of NESN.com: Potential trade targets for the Boston Bruins; Ray Whitney, Aaron Ward, Matt Cullen, Raffi Torres, and Peter Mueller.
- Mike Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Niklas Backstrom, out with an illness, rejoined the team in Dallas but is doubtful for tonight’s game. The Wild are still in the playoff hunt, so they probably won’t be sellers. If they are buyers, it won’t be a significant deal. They are still hoping that P-M Bouchard will be able to return this year. If they do become sellers, the Wild have 4 players who might interest other teams; Marek Zidlicky, Kim Johnsson, Owen Nolan and Eric Belanger.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Andres Lilja has been assigned to the AHL by the Detroit Red Wings on a conditioning loan. Lilja as been out since last February 28th with a concussion. He’ll play at least 3 games with Grand Rapids, then they’ll re-evaluate.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Talk that Dion Phaneuf was offered in a package for Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flyers are also said to be interested in Phaneuf but they have cap issues and would have to send money back to the Flames or they would have to find someone else to take on a big salary player.
- Sean O’Donnell of the LA Kings could become available, and the Blackhawks have interest if they move Cam Barker.
- Could be the last season for Glen Sather as the GM of the Rangers. It still amazes me that he hasn’t been fired yet after years of making bad decisions. Mark Messier could take over as GM.
- The Oilers are finding it difficult to find a taker for Sheldon Souray and his $5.4 million cap hit. It won’t help that he hurt his wrist/hand in a fight with Jarome Iginla last night.
- The Canucks and Panthers could be looking at Hurricanes center Matt Cullen.
- Ken Campbell of The Hockey News: The LA Kings may be interested in Vinny Lecavalier, and they continue to be interested in Kovalchuk, but won’t bring in both. The Lightning reportedly asked for Jack Johnson, Wayne Simmonds, a prospect, and several draft picks. Atlanta asked for something similar for Kovalchuk.
- JP Hoornstra of the LA Daily News: The Ducks have locked up Jonas Hiller for 4 years and $18 million. He’ll get $4.5 million a season. The Ducks will continue to shop JS Giguere in hope that they can shed his $7 million price tag for next season.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com: Aaron Ward’s days in Carolina could be coming to end. Boston is one team that could be interested in bringing him in.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Contract talks between Sergei Gonchar and the Pittsburgh Penguins have been put on hold. Gonchar has a $5 million cap hit this year, but could probably get more as a UFA. The Pens would like to bring him back but it will need to be at a cap friendly, hometown discount number.
- Blues coach Andy Murray could be the first coach to be fired this season, and former Thrashers coach Bob Hartley could be his replacement.
- The Hurricanes could be looking to dump salaries, and players possibly on the move are Aaron Ward ($2.5 mill.), Joe Corvo ($2.75 mill.), Niclas Wallin ($1.725 mill.) and Ray Whitney.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- Despite all the injuries, don’t expect the Red Wings to add any players. Niklas Kronwal, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jason Williams and Adreas Lilja are all out with injuries, but they’ll be too close to the salary cap ceiling to add anyone that has a mid to high cap number.
- Four teams have inquired about Niklas Hagman, with one of them being Anaheim. Burke doesn’t really want to move him unless he’s blown away. Hagman has nice cap number of $3 million for the next 2 seasons.
- With the lack of trade talk out there, with so many teams almost capped out, Brian Burke will most likely once again push the idea of ‘retaining salary in trades’ at the next GM meetings. Burke thinks this will create the opportunity for more trades, others think it will create ‘Dead Money’.
- The Oilers are deep on the blueline and have reportedly been shopping shopping struggling Tom Gilbert. Gilbert could be tough to move with a cap number of $4 million, and 4 years left (after this season).
- Hockey Night in Canada’s “Hotstove’ – Some of what LeBrun mentions in the above, is talked about on the Hotstove.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres Patrick Kaleta was suspended for 2 games for hit on Jared Ross.
The Boston Bruins Free Up Some Cap Space

In a move to free up some cap space, the Boston Bruins have sent defenceman Aaron Ward to the Carolina Hurricanes for Patrick Eaves and a 2010 4th round pick. Ward returns to Carolina where he helped them win the cup in 2006. Eaves has already been waived by the Bruins and will be bought out.
This move was done by the Bruins to shed some cap space so they can try to re-sign Phil Kessel. Even with the trading of Ward, the buying out of Eaves, and the potential adding Kessel’s contract, the Bruins will be really close the cap. Ward has a cap hit of $2.5. Eaves was scheduled to make $1.4 million this year and $1.7 million next year. Eaves cap number after being bought out will now be just over $500,000 ($3.1 million times 2/3, divided by 4 years).
The Bruins still might have to move another player, and Chuck Kobasew might be the guy if someone would take the $2.333 cap hit ($2.5 million in each of the next to seasons).
