Morning notes involving Stastny, Semin, Blake, Oilers arena, Hurricanes, Redden, DiPietro, Crawford and Auld
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 15th, 2011
- Craig Custance of ESPN: (from his ‘mailbag’) Custance doesn’t think the Avalanche are interested in moving Paul Stastny. Burke is looking to use his defensive depth as part of a deal to get an impact player. If Colorado were to do any sort of big deal, salary would play a part as they are close to the salary floor. Custance thinks there are 7 elite goalies, Ryan Miller, Ilya Bryzgalov, Carey Price, Henrik Lundqvist, Tim Thomas, Pekka Rinne and Roberto Luongo. Any contract extension for Alexander Semin from the Capitlas won’t come until after the season. Custance doesn’t think the Capitals will trade him during the season as you need high-end players to win the Cup.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Jason Blake suffered a severe forearm laceration last night. He was wheeled out on a stretcher to a hospital.
- Dan Tencer via twitter on Oilers arena issues: “Katz Group has withdrawn the request for a non-compete from Northlands, who will continue to operate the current building as they see fit.” … “The City of Edmonton will assume all land options for the arena site and make the purchases pending paperwork and their current prices.” … “The City of Edmonton is still actively pursuing a written commitment from the Province of Alberta for funding to cover the $100M money gap.” … “The City of Edmonton will spend $20M over 10 years with the Oilers to promote Edmonton. Think logos, rink boards, commercials etc.” … “There will be another meeting at the end of the month, hopefully with a $ commitment from the Province by then. Will discuss Plan B if not.”
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos has added Michael Kahn as an investor and should be adding more shortly. So far he’s sold $22 million in equity to 9 people from North Carolina. In the next 6 months he’s looking to sell another $20 million to North Carolina people.
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Players escrow refund cheques are going to be delayed. The NHL and NHLPA are disagreeing about what qualifies as hockey revenue. Renaud Lavoie via twitter: The NHLPAs dispute could amount to millions more for the players.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: He isn’t saying that the Islanders would buyout Rick DiPietro next summer, but if they did under the current CBA rules it would cost them $1.5 million per year for the next 18 years.
- Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside of ESPN talk Rick DiPietro: Burnside thinks DiPietro’s deal could go down as one of the worst hockey decisions ever made. He also wonders how the Islanders would have made out if they had kept Roberto Luongo and not drafted DiPietro 1st overall. LeBruns wonders if there will be a “one-time buyout provision for teams to get rid of one bad contract” in the new CBA. Al Montoya has started all 3 games for the Islanders, and if they want to showcase Evgeni Nabokov for a trade, they’ll have to get him in some games. LeBrun thinks they will move Nabokov before the trade deadline regardless of DiPietro’s health. If the Islanders are in a playoff hunt, Burnside thinks they may not use Nabokov as straight trade bait.
- K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune: Corey Crawford will start in net for the Blackhawks tonight against the Bruins. Viktor Stalberg could also make his season debut.
- James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen: Alex Auld will be in net for the Senators tonight against Capitals. Bobby Butler re-aggravated a groin injury and won’t travel to Washington.
Trouble could be brewing for Predators … Varlamov could head to KHL tomorrow … Cole to test market … Senators options

Nick Kypreos via twitter: Some are questioning Predators missing qualifying offers on RFA’s Cal O’Reilly, Nick Spaling, Matt Halischuk and Sergei Kostitsyn.
Pavel Lysenkov via twitter: Semyon Varlamov could sign a KHL contract tomorrow, 99% that it would be with SKA.
Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Erik Cole’s agent confirmed that he’d like to test free agency.
“Erik wants to see what the options are on July 1st,” Bartlett said via email. “That is in no way a slam on the Hurricanes or his appreciation of the role they have played in his career. He has never really explored free agency in his career and feels that he is at the age when it makes sense to see all offers before deciding on what he wants to do.”
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators currently have 15 players under contract at $43 million, and have a couple needs that would help bring them over the salary floor. 1. A forward who can put the puck in the net. 2. They need a backup goalie as they decided to let Curtis McElhinney walk. Some players they may go after are: Tomas Fleischmann, Michael Handzus, Tim Connolly, Josh Harding, Mike Smith, Alex Auld and Jose Theodore.

- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Jason Spezza could be in the Senators lineup this weekend.
- Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes have plenty of cap space but will they look to add a player at the trade deadline. If Canes owner would be willing to a $1 million in payroll, that would be a $4.5 million player. The Canes would likely need to give up one of their young forwards. If they go the sellers route, they have 9 UFAs.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers are debating if they need to add someone before the deadline, and Carolina’s Erik Cole could be one of those players. “We don’t know if we want to disrupt the chemistry,” said a club source. “That’s the question.”
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Peter Mueller skated for about 10 minutes before Avalanche practice. It’s likely the first time he’s skated since September.

Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on October 29th, 2010
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Sources have told Strickland that Marc Savard passed his baseline test, but is still weeks away from returning. He’s been skating but hasn’t practiced with the team yet. The Bruins may have told Blake Wheeler’s agent that they won’t be trading him because they like his age and upside. The Bruins have been scouting the Phoenix Coyotes.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney on Keith Yandle trade rumors, “Listen, that was just pure, utter fantasy. Keith is an important part of our future. He knows it,” Maloney said. “Not that anybody can’t be traded … But it would have to be something very special.” Maloney did have coffee with Peter Chiarelli in Ottawa which helped spark trade rumors. Maloney spoke with Yandle’s agent in the summer about an extension, but things are on hold until the owner situation has stabilized.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: It doesn’t look like Drew Doughty will be returning this weekend, as he had some returning symptoms the other day. After Saturday’s game, they don’t play until next Thursday.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Alex Burrows return the Vancouver Canucks lineup is getting closer and it could mean that one of Jeff Tambellini, Peter Schaefer or Guillaume Desbiens could be out. The cap ramifications of Burrows could also impact Ryan Parent ($900,000), though injuries to their blueline complicate that move.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers demoted Nik Zherdev to the 4th line at practice and would not talk to reporters after. Two games ago he was taken off the power-play unit and is averaging about 12 1/2 minutes per game.

- Fan 960 Audio: Craig Conroy looks back at his career, before his 1,000 game last night.
- I’m sure people have been telling Dion Phaneuf to hit the net more often, but he was showing symptoms of ‘Jason Blake-itis’ last night, shooting pucks into the middle of the chest of the opposing goalies. The next stage of this illness is flutter wrist shots from the side boards at terrible angles.
- Jordan Tootoo’s hit on Carlo Colaiacovo will be looked at the league.

Jarome Open to a Trade? Michalek Done for Playoffs … Potential Flame Targets
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 16th, 2010
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The below statement doesn’t need much commentary to go along with it … From Jarome Iginla …
“If they don’t want me here and want to move in a different direction, I would look at it,” he said after completing all the medicals and end-of-season interviews with the team brass. “You want to play where you are wanted and have people believe in you.
“If they do that, we would look at it. It wouldn’t be personal. My family has been treated very well. I want to be part of the solution here and I believe I can be. If that is what it came to, I wouldn’t take it personally. The organization has treated me well.”
- Allen Panzeri of hte Ottawa Citizen: Already without Filip Kuba and Alex Kovalev, the Ottawa Senators will now be without winger Milan Michalek for the remainder of the playoffs. During Game 1 versus the Penguins, Michalek tore his ACL in his left knee. Michalek missed 9 games at the end of the regular season with a partially torn ACL. Surgery will be in about 2 weeks and he should be ready for training camp.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: The Florida Panthers currently sit in the #3 slot at the 2010 NHL draft. The Panthers could make a pitch to Boston to move up one spot in the draft, or move down collecting more picks.
- The Calgary Sun: Some free agents that the Calgary Flames may target; Eric Nystrom (Cal.), Alex Auld (NYR), Tomas Holmstrom (Det), Adam Burish (Chi), Scott Nichol (SJ), Colby Armstrong (Atl), and Matt Cooke (Pitt).
- QMI Agency, The Toronto Sun: There is a rumor coming out Quebec that the New York Islanders were being bought by media giant, Quebecor. Quebecor CEO quickly denied that there have been any talks with with the Islanders, but did say they do have an interest in bringing a team back to Quebec City.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: A group of agents is pushing for former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant GM, Jeff Jackson, to become on of the top guys in the NHLPA.
- Jim Kelly of Sportsnet.ca: Rumors are floating around that Brendan Shanahan could be taking for the Executive VP of NHL Operations, a position currently held by disciplinarian, Colin Campbell. Though Kelly doesn’t put much stock in it because:
1) Shanahan is woefully inexperienced in the inner workings of the oft-times Byzantine world of the NHL and 2) what person in his right mind wants to be exposed to scathing criticism from both inside and outside the league for rulings that on many occasions King Solomon himself couldn’t cleanly decide.
Rangers Claim Alex Auld on Re-entry Waivers
Posted by Derek in NHL News, NHL Opinion, NHL Rumors on February 27th, 2010
“The New York Rangers have claimed Alex Auld on re-entry waivers from the Dallas Stars.
Auld, 29, is 9-6-3 with a 3.00 goals against average and .894 save percentage in 21 appearances this season.
A free agent at season’s end, Auld is making $1-million this season, though the Rangers will only be responsible for half of his remaining salary this season, with the Stars picking up the other half. “(Source:TSN)
This move makes sense for the new York Rangers, Lundqvist can’t play every game.
Vokoun to Caps? Hamhuis Would Like to Remain a Pred? Auld to Rangers? Kozlov Requests Trade …
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 27th, 2010
“That’s kind of what we’re hoping for and kind of what we’ve heard — that the financial situation right now is not where it needs to be to get the deal done,” Hamhuis said. “We’re hoping that with making the playoffs and making the playoff run, that with some money generated from that, that maybe at the end of the season, something could be worked out.”
“I don’t know if I’m going to be on this team or another team,” Kozlov said. “If we can find a team which I like and which is good for me and my family I will go. If not, I’m going to be here. …
With coach not playing me, what can you do? That’s why I feel I could go play for somebody that needs my help. Is so, I’ll waive my no trade clause.”
