Morning Hits: Hawks-Pens at Soldier Field, Ribeiro not thinking contract, Jets, Avalanche and Bergeron talks
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 2nd, 2013
- Hockey Central: The Blackhawks will host the Penguins at Soldier Field on March 1st.
- Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times: Capitals UFA Mike Ribeiro said he’s not worried about his next contract. He could earn his next contact with a good playoffs. He’s looking for a long-term deal and has already rejected a Capitals offer of three-years, $14 million.
“I think playoff or not playoff, I’m probably going to have a good deal so I’m really worried about my deal right now,” Ribeiro said. “It’s going to signed at some point. So the focus since the beginning was to get to the playoffs and now that we’re here it’s about how far can we go as a team. But I’m not worried; I’m going to sign and it’s just going to happen when the time is right.”
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets coach Claude Noel has one year left on his contract and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff had this to say:
“Claude Noel is the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets. He’s under contract. I know you’re going to ask me about an extension. There’s processes that have to go through, there’s different things you discuss, you talk about, you meet as a group, as a staff.”
The Jets have nine RFAs who are “very much priorities” according to Cheveldayoff. No formal contract discussions have taken place with RFAs: Zach Bogosian, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler, Alex Burmistrov, Eric Tangradi, Anthony Peluso, Zach Redmond, Paul Postma and Arturs Kulda.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: If the Avalanche didn’t win the lottery and get the first overall pick, there were rumors that they would look to trade up. Avs GM Greg Sherman is still with the team, but it may come down to what role Joe Sakic wants to take. If Sakic decides to take over, VP of Player Development Craig Billington could have a bigger role. If Sakic declines for family or other reasons, does Sherman remain? The Avalanche asked for Derek Stepan when they were in talks with the Rangers about Ryan O’Reilly. Sounding like the Bruins and Patrice Bergeron have already talked contract extension. He has one year left on his deal and can’t sign a deal until after July 5th.
Morning Hits: Nill, Nieuwendyk, Malone, Flames, Neuvirth, Ducks, Luongo, Jets and Sabres
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 28th, 2013
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Sources saying that Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill will replace GM Joe Nieuwendyk in Dallas. Andy Strickland: Confirms reports that Nill will replace Nieuwendyk.
- Erik Erlendsson: Erlendsson doesn’t see the Lightning buying out Ryan Malone or Teddy Purcell. Trading Malone is a possibility.
- The Fourth Period: It’s thought that the Flames were close to trading Cory Sarich at the deadline. Teams also called about Lee Stempniak, Curtis Glencross and Alex Tanguay. GM Jay Feaster has indicated that he isn’t really interested in trading Glencross. If Miikka Kiprusoff retires, the Flames will be on the lookout for a new No.1 goalie.
- Mike Vogl: The Capitals signed Michal Neuvirth to a 2-year, $5 million extension. He’ll earn $2.4 million next year, and $2.6 million the following year.
- Eric Stephens: Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau won’t name is starting goalie for Game 1, but added that he’s known who it will be for awhile.
- Andi Petrilli: (Canucks lose 7-2, 6 goals in the third) Canucks Roberto Luongo was off the ice, undressed, showered and out of the arena in 12 minutes. Jason Botchford: “I’m not sure how furious Luongo is. He should be used to getting hung out there and embarrassed by now.”
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets have nine RFAs, including: Zach Bogosian, Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little. Wiebe thinks they should lock up Bogosian to a max-length eight year deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $48 to 50 million.
“You never know. It’s a negotiation. It’s not something that usually happens overnight. “I don’t really know what I’m expecting as far as how smooth or how not smooth it’s going to go,” said Bogosian. “Yeah, I’ve really kind of settled in here and I’ve enjoyed my time. Whether it’s two years, eight years or 10 years, I’m going to enjoy playing here.
“I’m looking forward to that next step. I want to be part of the solution moving forward, as far as getting in the playoffs and winning a championship.”
Wheeler will be looking for a raise from his $2.55 million, and could get a long-term deal.
Little should get a multi-year deal for more than the $3 million he was making.
Alex Burmistrov is an interesting case, as some think he could bolt for the KHL or could use a fresh start with a new organization.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres Thomas Vanek has thought that Friday’s game could have been his last in a Sabres uniform.
“Let’s be honest,” Vanek said. “I’m not stupid. I know I have a year left and they can probably deal me for prospects, young guys, whatever else is out there. Yeah, I’ve thought about it. If it looks like it’s a long rebuild, then it probably makes sense for both parties to move on.”
“I don’t know what the plan is,” Vanek said. “If they’re turning it over to the younger guys, it’s a turnover. Or are they going to build around us again? It’s all speculation at this point because you guys don’t know and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Sabres Ryan Miller also realizes that his days could be number.
“Around this stage of a contract, you have to be realistic,” Miller said. “In the last year of your deal, if you’re not part of the plan, you become an asset that’s tradable. So I’m just trying to stay open to coming back and trying to stay excited about playing hockey games in the NHL if it’s not going to work out.”
NHL Rumors I: The Fallout from yesterday
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on April 4th, 2013
From twitter unless otherwise noted
- Elliotte Friedman: Flames GM Jay Feaster said that their only untouchables were Sven Baertschi, TJ Brodie, Curtis Glencross and Mark Giordano.
- Randy Miller: Don’t understand the Flyers trading for Steve Mason, giving up a 3rd round pick. He’s struggled for years and is an RFA, so they would have to send him a qualifying of $3.2 million to retain his rights.
- Jim Diamond: Predators GM David Poile on the Martin Erat trade: ”Marty came to us in recent days and indicated a trade might be in his best interests.”
- Mike Harrington: Bets that the Wild initially asked the Sabres about Thomas Vanek before moving to Jason Pominville.
- Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff wasn’t interested in trading picks for short-term help.
“The hardest thing for me is to try and accelerate a process that can’t be accelerated,” said Cheveldayoff. “It’s a vicious circle. If you don’t draft players and develop them into assets, then you can’t do anything on a deadline day. If you choose to trade your draft picks for assets for the now, you forgo the opportunity to build a sustainable system with a sustainable flow of players.”
They listened for offers on Alex Burmistrov, but didn’t come up with anything they liked.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Oilers offered Ryan Jones and a draft pick to the Senators for Ben Bishop. The Senators asked for Sean Couturier straight up. Tampa Bay hopes to find a 1a between Bishop and Anders Lindback. Both the Canucks and Canadiens were interested in Raffi Torres. The Coyotes settled with the Sharks offer of Florida’s 3rd round pick. The Rangers gained payroll flexibility for next season by trading Marian Gaborik. They have to re-sign RFAs Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh and Carl Hagelin. Also, they now have a better shot at signing Ryane Clowe.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Capitals received lots of interest in Mike Ribeiro, but they continue to work on an extension with him. The Canadiens were after a rugged winger but were unsuccessful. The Blue Jackets tried to get Tomas Fleischmann from the Panthers. The Blue Jackets may have offered one of their 1st round pick and Derek Dorsett for Fleischmann. The Devils, Canucks, Jets and Jackets showed interest in Drew Stafford. The Sabres considered Alex Burmistrov.
NHL Rumors III: Garrioch Roundup – Eastern Conference
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on March 24th, 2013
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Top five Eastern Conference players that could be available: Marian Gaborik, Mark Streit, Mike Ribeiro, Jason Pominville and Robyn Regehr.
Team Trade Deadline Outlooks
Boston Bruins – The Bruins have the cap room and are looking to bring in an impact forward. They’ll go after Brenden Morrow or Jarome Iginla.
Buffalo Sabres – If GM Darcy Regier is going to be in charge of the rebuild, he’s got a lot of work to do. The word is they want to trade captain Jason Pominville. Drew Stafford and Ryan Miller will be mentioned in trade talk.
Carolina Hurricanes - There is talk they may talk to the Senators about Ben Bishop. They were looking to add a defenseman. Both Joe Corvo and Jamie McBain are available.
Florida Panthers – GM Dale Tallon is ready to sell, but they’ve been hit with injuries. Tomas Fleischmann is available. Jose Theodore could bring a team some goalie depth.
Montreal Canadiens – They would like to add a veteran defenseman and maybe Ryane Clowe. The Canadiens could use a little more grit.
New Jersey Devils – GM Lou Lamoriello has been looking for a top-six forward. They don’t have a lot to trade, and with the NHL in New Jersey this year, they may not want to trade their first round pick.
New York Islanders – GM Garth Snow has trade assets in Mark Streit, Lubomir Visnovsky and Evgeni Nabokov. They would like to re-sign all three. Streit is being coveted by several teams.
New York Rangers – They’ve been trying to do something for weeks. They’ve dangled Marian Gaborik. John Tortorella could be in trouble if they miss the playoffs.
Ottawa Senators – GM Bryan Murray may look to add a top-six forward. Matt Cullen would be an option. Players that could be traded are Peter Regin, Colin Greening and Ben Bishop.
Philadelphia Flyers – They’ve held talks with the Flames about Jay Bouwmeester. Some wonder if they would dangle Sean Couturier because he could help land a Pronger replacement.
Pittsburgh Penguins – The Penguins would like to add one more scorer. Iginla could be a fit. A shut-down defenseman would be a nice addition too.
Tampa Bay Lightning – Anyone but Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman could be had at the right price. It may be more of a quick re-tooling compared to a Yzerman trying to unload players. Martin St. Louis is a possibility.
Toronto Maple Leafs – Garrioch wonders if the Leafs will finally go after a goalie as James Reimer and Ben Scrivens have come back to earth. They’ve been linked to Jonathan Bernier and Roberto Luongo.
Washington Capitals – Mike Ribeiro, Troy Brouwer, Jason Chimera and Joel Ward are available.
Winnipeg Jets – They were trying to trade Ron Hainsey, but he’s been valuable and playing big minutes. Alex Burmistrov has been in the doghouse. They may be looking to add over looking to sell.
NHL Rumors: Blue Jackets, Coyotes, Penguins, Flames, Lightning, Bruins, Jets, Red Wings and Maple Leafs
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on March 18th, 2013
- Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch: The Blue Jackets now find themselves battling for a playoff spot. It’s not sounding like the Blue Jackets will be buyers at the trade deadline. They could be sellers despite being in the hunt. Players that are getting talked about are: R.J. Umberger – $4.6 million through 2016-17 and has a no trade clause. Derick Brassard – one year left at $3.2 million. He could get a decent return for a team looking for a No. 2 center. Vinny Prospal – had a gentleman’s agreement with former GM Scott Howson that he could play as long as he wanted, then join the front office. Not sure if ‘agreement’ remains with new management. He has a no trade clause. Adrian Aucoin – veteran defenseman always get interest at the deadline. President of hockey operations John Davidson scouted the Penguins-Rangers game.
- Rob Rossi and Josh Yohe of the Tribune-Review: Coyotes GM Don Maloney was at the Penguins game. The two have traded before. The Penguins are looking for defensive depth and an upgrade to their 3rd and 4th lines.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Molinari list some potential rental players that teams could look at: Jarome Iginla, Mike Ribeiro, Robyn Regehr, Ryan Whitney, Jordan Leopold, Anton Babchuk, Ladislav Smid, Mark Fistric and Milan Hejduk.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Jarome Iginla is often linked to the Penguins, but he may not be a good fit for them. Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz have played well with Sidney Crosby, and bringing in Iginla would put Dupuis back to the third line, which would be foolish. There also wouldn’t be a spot for Iginla on the power-play.
- Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times: Cristodero wonders if Martin St. Louis would leave the Lightning or if GM Steve Yzerman would ever consider trading him. There has been no indication that any conversations have taken place, pure speculation. It only makes sense if St. Louis thinks he has a better chance at winning a cup somewhere else. The 37-year old has a no-trade clause.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Moving Marian Gaborik from the right wing to left wing hasn’t worked for the Rangers. He has only three goals in the last 22 games. They are looking to move Gaborik and his $7.5 million cap hit through next year. He has a no-trade clause in which he provides a list of 10 teams that he can’t be dealt too, something he’s already done.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli’s shopping list probably contains help for his 3rd and 4th lines. He’ll also look for help on the blueline.
“It’s the same list every year, it really is,’’ said Chiarelli. “You look to add depth, and rather than target, say, a top six forward, I like to define [the process] as looking right through the lineup.’’
Rumors are out there that the Bruins are in the hunt for Jarome Iginla, but Dupont thinks the Bruins would have Daniel Alfredsson higher on the list.
- Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets should play Alex Burnistrov more. He needs to get back into the lineup. He’s still an asset, and if they are not going to give him a shot, they should look to move him for equal value.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: Khan thinks the Red Wings could target Oilers defenseman Ladislav Smid at the trade deadline. They have been scouting him. He would strengthen their top-four and bring some grit. It could take a second round pick or a second tier prospect.
- Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: The Leafs have only two points in the last five games. Is it time to make a trade to turn things around? There have been Corey Perry and Mike Ribeiro rumors. They are said to be looking for a center and top-four defenseman.
NHL Rumors: Iginla, Kessel, Kulemin, Burmistrov, Johnson, Kennedy, Ribeiro, Oilers, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Flyers and Wild
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on March 6th, 2013
- Todd Cordell via twitter: TSN’s Bob McKenzie said last night that it’s more likely that Jarome Iginla gets traded at the deadline than at any time in the past. Darren Dreger said Maple Leafs Phil Kessel and Nikolai Kulemin could be available if the right deal comes along. Dreger added that Alex Burmistrov could be trade bait for the Jets.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen on trade rumors involving defenseman Jack Johnson and the Penguins: ”It’s silly. I don’t usually repond to this kind of stuff, but this is just silly. I went to watch a game. (Pens GM) Ray Shero is a friend of mine.”
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy is in the last year of his two year, $4 million contract, and the next couple of weeks will be crucial regarding his future. There have been internal discussions about his current and future role with the team.
- The Fourth Period: As the trade deadline approaches, Capitals center Mike Ribeiro could become a target of several teams. The 33-year old will be a UFA at the end of the season. With Panthers Stephen Weiss out for the season, Ribeiro may get more interest. Teams that are interested in adding a top two center include: Ducks, Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, Senators, Red Wings and Canucks.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: (mailbag) If the Oilers are out of the playoff race by the trade deadline, they’ll look to move out people. Ryan Whitney is the most likely to be traded. The Blues could be looking at him with the feeling that he’d be better right now than Ian Cole and Wade Redden. Nikolai Khabibulin could be the next guy after Whitney to be moved, if his groin can hold up. It appears as of now that they want to re-sign Ladislav Smid and Ryan Jones, both who would be UFAs at the end of the season. Teams are interested in Smid. Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky could be in play, but more likely in the summer if they decide they’d like to get bigger.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman:
“I always find that I’m usually the guy that’s more interested in making moves earlier and most of my counterparts are more interested in waiting it out, so it’s not that unusual for me,” Bowman said with a chuckle Tuesday on the line from Chicago.
A lot of teams in still waiting to see if they are buyers or sellers.
“The standings dictate how much movement there is, separation or lack thereof,” Red Wings GM Ken Holland told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “You look at the West, from third to 11th this morning, there’s just three points separating those teams.”
“Ultimately, the next two to three weeks will determine certainly my thinking for the Detroit Red Wings,” Holland said.
Teams are still trying to figure out what they have with their own team.
“It’s hard to evaluate, you get the injuries everyone is dealing with, it’s though,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “For sure you don’t want to do anything that hurts anything long term.”
Chicago Blackhawks: They don’t have many holes, but could look to add some depth up the middle.
“We’ve identified players that we think would help us,” Bowman told ESPN.com. “I’ve called to let those teams know: ‘This is a player we’re interested in, you may not be interested in moving him now or ever, but …’ they take note of it. Nobody I’ve talked to yet has wanted to talk further about it, they filed it away. So it’s a waiting game.”
“I’m probably more looking up front, depth maybe at center,” Bowman said. “Not high-end but more a role-playing type center.”
“We’ve got young guys knocking at the door,” he said. “But I guess most of our depth is young guys, so if we add a forward, it’ll be a more experienced guy.”
Red Wings: The Red Wings have been hit with a lot of injuries this season.
“If we can get all our guys back, that’s almost like a deadline addition or two,” Holland said.
LeBrun doesn’t think the Wings are interested in adding a depth defenseman, but if Holland adds one, it could be a top-four guy, which aren’t easy to come by.
Flyers: Never shy on making a big move, but not wanting to trade their top young talent.
“We’re probably like a lot of teams, looking around for something that makes sense for now and the long term,” Holmgren said. “But we think we have a good group of young players that we prefer not to mess with.”
If the Flyers make a move, they could look at adding someone who would be able to play with them into next season. They could use a puck-moving, top-four defenseman.
Wild: The Wild could use a veteran defenseman, but GM Chuck Fletcher does not want to give up any of his high-end futures.
“We’re not looking to trade our top prospects at this time,” the Wild GM said. “If there’s something we can do to help our team over the next month, we’ll look at it but we’re not looking to make wholesale changes, that’s for sure.”
Fletcher has little interest in trading Matt Cullen.

- Chris Nichols via twitter: Sabres Cody Hodgson, who has been out with a broken hand, is no longer in a no contact jersey, and is expected to return next week. He’s been out since November 2nd.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: Stars Loui Eriksson signed with Davos in the Swiss league. Peter Budaj signed with HC Banska in the Slovak Extraliga.

Morning notes on: Toews, Bolland, Brunette, Kassian, Sedin, Ballard, Jets, Blues ownership and Schneider starts
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on April 5th, 2012
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks Jonathan Toews hasn’t been ruled out for Saturday.
“There’s still signs of the concussion lingering and, when that’s completely gone, I’ll be comfortable playing,” said Toews.
Dave Bolland is day-to-day with a n upper-body injury. Andrew Brunette (foot) is questionable for tonight.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks Zach Kassian is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Byron Bitz has been recalled. Coach Vigneault when asked if Daniel Sedin has begun light skating,
“He’s following the protocol. . .there’s nothing to report there. That’s where we are.”
GM Mike Gillis has said he hopes Daniel is ready for the playoffs. Keith Ballard travelled with the team but won’t play tonight. Kevin Bieksa has missed the last 4 games.
- Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets need to find a #1 center either through a draft and develop or through free agency. Brian Little, Alex Burmistrov and Kyle Wellwood have been used in the top 6, but are not top-line centers. Top draft pick Mark Scheifele still needs to grow physically and learn to against men.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Minority owner of the Blues, Tom Stillman, is still working on finalizing a deal to buy the team. No closing date is set. One area that hasn’t been settled with the NHL yet is who guarantees/funds the losses.
- Dan Murphy via twitter: Cory Schneider will start in net for the Canucks against the Flames.
