- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Flames GM Jay Feaster:
“I’m not going to sit around and wait”, Feaster told ESPN.com Thursday. “There is urgency here. There’s very much a sense of urgency. We kept this group together for a reason this summer. We articulated what that was and articulated to the players. They talked about the need to get off to a good start. We saw what happened last season when you dig yourself a hole. We played like our pants were on fire in the second half last year and it [still] wasn’t enough. We’re all paying lip service to what we needed to do. Now we need to do it.”
“Obviously I’m making phone calls and people are making phone calls to me,’’ said Feaster. “It’s not something I’m looking to do, I want to win with this group. That’s what I want to do.
“We like the team we have. But we talked repeatedly about it all summer and in camp, the need to get off to a good start.’’
Senators GM Bryan Murray:
“Yes, and I hate to say this, but if there’s a need on another team for a veteran defenseman, we’ll probably one have available that we’d be willing to talk about.’’
Sergei Gonchar still has another year left at $5.5 million and a no-movement clause.
- Adrian Dater of SI.com: Dater runs through some players who could be traded, and who might be interested. 1. Rene Bourque (CAL) – The Avalanche could offer one of their top 3 defensive prospects and/or throw in winger TJ Galiardi. 2. Jay Bouwmeester (CAL) – Dater wonders about a Bouwmeester for Tuomo Ruutu deal. 3. Lots of Blue Jackets – Rich Nash is due between $7.5 and $8.2 million until 2017-18. The last 6 years of Fedor Tyutin’s deal are for $4.5 million. Marc Mathot has a 4 year deal at $3 million. James Wisniewski has a 6 year deal. Dater notes that other than Nash, the others may not get much interest. 4. Derek Morris (PHO) on a 3 year, $2.75 million per deal – Dater proposes a Morris for Alex Tanguay deal. Tanguay signed a 5 year deal at $3.5 million. Dater says that Olli Jokinen makes sense too. Adrian Dater via twitter: Some of the trade scenario talk was meant to have some humor too.
- Eric Engels via twitter: As for Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier giving Andrei Markov a 3 year deal, Gauthier said mid-season last year that they weren’t concerned about Markov’s rehab. That his injuries didn’t factor into their desire to want him to return and his want to re-sign with the Canadiens.
- Josh Yole via twitter: Evgeni Malkin is looking better as practice goes on today. Will be interesting to see if he’ll play tomorrow.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens forward Scott Gomez left last night’s game with an upper-body injury. He was initially hurt after taking a hit from Engelland, tried for one more shift after, but then left.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen injured his hand blocking a shot and it’s not known if he’ll play tomorrow.

- Josh Yole of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Mario Lemieux came away encourage from his talk with Jaromir Jagr. The Pens haven’t made an offer to Jagr, and are unsure if he’d take less money then he may get elsewhere. Detroit could offer more money. Jagr can’t sign anywhere until July 1st as it’s a “blackout period” now as stipulated in the CBA. Sources are saying Pens GM Ray Shero may not want to pay more than $1 million for Jagr.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The LA Kings left wing wish list could line up like: Eric Cole, Simon Gagne, Ryan Malone, Alex Tanguay, and Cory Stillman.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The Flames are interested in trading for Ryan Smyth, though their level of interest isn’t known. If they don’t think they can get Alex Tanguay signed, they would have a hole on the left wing and would have a “net presence on the powerplay.” Maybe the Kings would take Ales Kotalik and his $3 million, could bury him in the minors.
- Nick Cotsonika via twitter: Ryan Smyth asked to be moved close to home. Kings GM Lombardi is down to 2 teams, started with 3. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Kings had more trade talks with the Flames and Oilers yesterday about Smyth, he’s going to end up in Alberta.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: If the Kings are able to move out Ryan Smyth, don’t rule a them making a move for Brad Richards.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: A high draft pick will likely be packaged with Ryan Smyth in any trade to accommodate taking on his contract.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It doesn’t look like the Ottawa Senators will be able to move up from the #6 spot in tonight’s draft.
“We’ve been asked if we’d be willing to move a player with a pick rather than two picks,” Murray told The Team 1200. “It depends on the player. I think one team did ask about a little Swedish defenceman (Erik Karlsson) and the sixth overall and it was politely declined. There are lots of ideas out there that we don’t agree with and there will be lots of offers. You just have to pick the right one.
“I can see us moving two picks for sure, if not three, but I believe the price for moving up for one pick is usually two picks, not three picks. That’s what it has been in the past. I could see us moving a couple of picks. We could be talking about (keeping) eight or nine picks, but we could be talking 11. I would guess that we would probably trade two picks.”
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Brian Burke,
“I’ve got lots of lines in the water,” the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager said. “But I have no idea what’s going to happen.”
The Maple Leafs are trying to land a #1 center or move up in the draft. They have the #25, #30, and #39 picks but they are not enough to get close to the top 5 picks. He may not be that interested in moving the #25 pick to get “to the teens” as picks from #10 to around #26 are not much different in quality. Burke couldn’t answer questions regarding whether he was in on Mike Richards and/or Jeff Carter as it would violate NHL tampering rules. Darren Dreger reported that the Flyers called about Nazem Kadri and Nikolai Kulemin but never got to Burke (see one of yesterday’s posts for a little more info on it).
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke wants to see if winger Clarke MacArthur is a one year wonder before giving him a long-term deal, “The problem is I’m not prepared to commit to a long-term contract for a player who really had one productive year.”It would seem that negotiations for the RFA have come to a halt.
“Putting a value on that is not easy either. That’s why we haven’t been able to sign him. It’s not that he’s being unreasonable, it’s just ‘What is he?’
“Is he a 70-point player or is he a 35-point player where he has been most of his career, so I’m not surprised we’re having a difficult time arriving at a value.”
Burke on RFA Luke Schenn,
“There doesn’t appear to be any urgency on that one from their side,” Burke said of negotiations with Schenn’s camp. “They’ll probably wait and see if other teams sign contracts that they think might help them.”
- CP in the Globe and Mail: The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed Andrei Markov to a 3 year, $17.25 million deal, a $5.75 million cap hit.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract breakdown: “$10M, $6.5M, $8M, $6M, $6M,, $5.5M, $5.5M $2.25M, $1.25M.”
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Robyn Regehr was going to sleep on the proposed trade that would send him to Buffalo. He’s already spoken with Darcy Regier and Terry Pegula.
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: Sources are saying Chris Pronger will be offered the Flyers captaincy.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Max Talbot rejected a 3 year offer from the Penguins last week. It’s believed to be a “slight” decrease in pay from his previous $1.05 million salary, possibly in the $800,000 range. If Talbot is going to take a reduction in pay, he may be wanting a 4 year deal.
Free agent updates involving Jagr, Doughty, Tanguay, Selanne, Bryzgalov, the Canadiens and Red Wings

- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Multiple sources confirmed that Jaromir Jagr approached the Pittsburgh Penguins about a possible return. The Red Wings, Rangers, Capitals and Canadiens are also of interest to Jagr. The Penguins may be open to the idea, the Pens were waiting for Jagr to contact them. The Penguins have 17 players under contract at $55.5 million.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens have 15 players under contract for next year after the signings of Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais. Andrei Markov’s side and GM Pierre Gauthier are still working on a deal and will meet at the draft. The Canadiens will have about $20.3 million available with the cap going up to about $64 million. Yannick Weber’s signing should be announced soon. They should have plenty of space available after Markov and Josh Gorges are signed to add a top 6 forward.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said they continue to negotiate with Jonathan Ericsson. They will decide in the next 10 days whether to offer a contract to Ruslan Salei. Rookie Brendan Smith will be given every opportunity to make the team. On trade talks, “We’ve received a few calls over the last week or so,” Holland said of potential trade opportunities. “Teams out there know we have a need on defense and we have cap space.” Jiri Hudler and Valtteri Filppula could be dangled. If they go the free agent route, Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff, Sami Salo, James Wisniewski, Joni Pitkanen and Ed Jovanovski could be options.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: The Calgary Flames would like to bring winger Alex Tanguay back, but there are large difference between the two sides, “it’s money” according to GM Jay Feaster. He’s likely looking for a big raise from the $1.7 million he made last year.
“Well, I’d like to think we can (sign him). But we’re not where we need to be, and there’s still a lot of work to be done,” Feaster said. “We’ll have to see where it goes.
“I think the fact we’re talking is a good thing.”
Feaster has talked with other teams about moving up or down in the draft.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne is still silent on whether he’ll return next season or retire. He’s said for months that he’ll decide by July 1st.
- Tim Rohan of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on Ilya Bryzgalov talks,
“Well, we would like that to get resolved at some point,” Holmgren said Monday on a conference call. “There is still enough time after the draft to get a deal done. The important thing is that there was progress made when Ilya [Bryzgalov] and his agent, Ritch Winter, were in town. I don’t see any reason why that’s not going to continue.
“I don’t have a crystal ball, so I can’t really give you a definitive answer. There is enough progress, which kind of gives me hope, anyway, that we can make a deal at some point.”
Holmgren added that at some point there needs to be a compromise on years and amount. TSN is reporting that the salary cap will be set at $64 million with the floor being $48 million. After July 1st, teams are able to go over the salary cap by 10%. Holmgren would also like to re-sign Ville Leino.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Kings GM Dean Lombardi on Drew Doughty’s contract negotiations,
I went up there (to Toronto) four weeks ago and opened up the dialogue (with agent Don Meehan). It was very clear, at that time, where it looked like it was headed. We came back and did our planning, looked at our options and what we could offer him, looked at the market, went to the GM meetings and then I flew up to Toronto from those meetings for another meeting (with Meehan). When you have the first meeting, you’re kind of laying the ground rules or whatever. This one was a little more focused. Things become clearer and we say, `OK, if this is going to get done, this is probably where it needs to be.’ Then I think we made a very serious offer to him this past week. I’m hoping to really push this forward at the draft.”

- Greg Brady via twitter: Sources tell Brady the earliest the Stanley Cup Finals would start would be next Monday. There will be no games on this Saturday regardless.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If the Rangers wait until July 1st to go after Brad Richards, they’ll have steep competition in Toronto and Los Angeles, and the price may go up. Brooks thinks the Rangers should make an offer to the Stars before July 1st, so Richards an get acquainted with the organization, and they could get full info on his concussion this past season. Brooks thinks the Rangers should offer the Stars a 2nd round pick (#57) for Richards.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater doesn’t think the Avalanche will offer any a goalie a contract in the $5-6 million per season range. Free agent goalies in that range are Ilya Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun. Other possible goalies could be: Josh Harding – risky, JS Giguere – too many miles, Marty Turco – no thanks, Chris Osgood – pass. The trade route could be an option but comes with a price: Jonathan Quick, Jonathan Bernier, or Cory Schneider – all expensive. If they go after Vokoun, Dater would only offer a 3 year deal worth $10 million. Peter Budaj won’t be back, and they can’t go into the season hoping Brian Elliott is the answer.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Penguins have started negotiations with free agents Pascal Dupuis and Mike Rupp. Dupuis, 32, had a cap hit of $1.4 million last year. Rupp, 31, had a $825,000.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The Penguins have begun talks with Craig Adams. Nothing is imminent but it’s possible that they could get a deal done this week.
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM Jay Feaster said on the radio yesterday that he has confidence the Flames will re-sign winger Alex Tanguay. “We believe we can,” the general manager said on NHL Live. “We do want to get him signed.” Tanguay signed a 1 year deal worth $1.7 million last year, and recorded 22 goals and 69 points. The Flames have 17 players under contract for next year with a cap hit of $55.8 million with an expected cap around $62.2 million. Ales Kotalik and his $3 million salary could be off to the minors next season. The future of Niklas Hagman and his $3 million is also in doubt. The Flames hope to re-sign backup goalie Henrik Karlsson. They have 4 UFA defenseman, Anton Babchuk ($1.4 million), Adam Pardy ($700,000), Steve Staios ($2.7 million) and Brett Carson ($500,000). Brendan Mikkelson ($687,500) is a RFA.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: With the strong play of Maple Leafs prospects Jesse Blacker (Owen Sound) and Jake Gardiner, Carl Gunnarson could be vulnerable as Brian Burke continue to look for a number 1 center.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: St. Louis Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko has decided to spend another year in the KHL. Update: “Sibir GM tells SovSport the Blues made an “exclusive offer” to Tarasenko “like no other…guaranteeing he’d play.” “Sibir GM to Sovsport about the Blues’ offer to Tarasenko: “We had no idea the Blues wanted [Tarasenko] to come so bad. But it’d be better for him to play 1 more year in Russia before moving to the NHL.”

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: With Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen returning from injuries, 2 players will have to be scratched. Mike Modano will likely be a healthy scratch. Kris Draper could be another possibility. Jiri Hudler has played well of late and may keep his spot in the lineup.
Mark Whicker of the OC Register: They list possible players the Ducks may go after this off-season; Joel Ward (Nash), Max Talbot (Pit), Vern Fiddler (Pho), Eric Belanger (Pho), Ville Leino (Phi), Kevin Bieksa (Van), Eric Cole (Car), Alex Tanguay (Cal), Sean Bergenheim (TB), Craig Adams (Pit), Michal Handzus (LA), Mike Rupp (Pit), Patrick Maroon (Phil).
John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller admitted that his late season injury was a concussion. Vogl’s article also has audio from Miller talking about the season, the future, and their goaltending situation.
John Vogl of the Buffalo News: With the new ownership in Buffalo, they may able to go the free agent route to improve this off-season, normally it would have had to been through trade. The Sabres need help at center and on the blueline. They need help down the middle.
Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Gleason wonders if the Sabres will bring Brad Boyes back, he had a good regular season after he came over from St. Louis but struggled in the playoffs. They need help down the middle. Gleason wonders if they could trade away some young prospects for say a Patrick Sharp? Evgeni Malkin? or maybe Danny Briere?

- Ian Busby of the Calgary Sun: Flames forward Curtis Glencross potted 24 goals this season, and now he’s looking to cash in. “I want a long-term deal. That’s our biggest factor right now.” He made $1.2 million this past season, and hopes to get something done with the Flames. Alex Tanguay, Brendan Morrison, Steve Staios, Anton Babchuk, Brett Carson, and Henrik Karlsson are UFA’s for the Flames. It’s unlikely that Staios will be back. Karlsson hopes to stay in Calgary, and he thinks they might be interested.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: It was reported last week that Maple Leafs prospect Leo Komarov would be coming over to North America, but he told KHL.ru that he’s more likely to stay in the KHL.
- Dave Naylor via twitter: “Forbes.com calculates that Glendale’s plan would bring its spending to almost $400 million on a team valued at $134 million.”
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: NY Rangers 2009 1st round pick Chris Kreider will be returning to Boston College next season for his junior year.
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: With Manny Malhotra’s injury and Raffi Torres’s suspension, Cody Hodgson and Victor Oreskovich joined the Canucks yesterday. Hodgson centered Mason Raymond and Jannik Hansen at practice. Oreskovich could slot in beside Max Lapierre and Tanner Glass on the 4th line.
- Brian Hamilton and Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: It looks like both David Bolland and Troy Brower will be in the lineup for the Blackhawks during their 1st round matchup with the Canucks. Bolland has been out since March 9th with a concussion. Brower has been out with a shoulder injury since last week.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Bob Hartley was a candidate to coach the Senators before they hired Cory Clouston, and was considered a candidate this time around, signed a deal to coach in the Swiss Elite League in Zurich.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger is still listed as day-to-day and no one knows or is saying if he’ll be ready to go in Game 1. He did not practice yesterday but took part in a special team’s meeting and did some off-ice rehab.
- Rich Hofmann of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers will likely use both Sergei Bobrovsky and Brian Boucher during the playoffs.

- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Jacques Lemaire has once again stepped down as the New Jersey Devils head coach. Lemaire took over from John MacLean who was fired on Dec. 23rd after posting a 9-22-2 record. The Devils were 29-17-3 under Lemaire, and posted a 23-3-2 run.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg is battling a knee injury. “I don’t expect him to start the series,” Babcock said. “But he’s really pushing things, and he’s working hard at it, and he’ll be ready to go as soon as he can.” Niklas Kronwall should be ready for Game 1 after missing the last 5 games with an upper-body injury.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Blackhawks coach Joel Quennville on center David Bolland, “Hopefully he can be a part early in this first series.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe should be ready for Game 1.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Sergei Bobrovsky will be the starting goalie for the Flyers in their 1st round match-up against Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres. Bobrovsky was 28-13-8 with a 2.59 GAA and .915 SV%. Miller was 34-22-8 with a 2.59 goals-against average and .916 SV%.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk now faces the tough decision on whether they want to re-sign Brad Richards, and if they can afford to sign him. Other Stars UFA’s are Jamie Langenbrunner, Karlis Skrastins, Brandon Segal, Jason Williams, Brian Sutherby and Jeff Woywitka. They also have to decide if they want to make a coaching change or not.
- Eric Francis in the Toronto Sun: Don’t expect to hear any updates on Alex Tanguay and the Calgary Flames talks from Tanguay’s agent, Steve Kotlowitz. A decision should be made by May if ESPN and the NHL can come to terms on a TV deal.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Free agent Zenon Konopka is optimistic a deal will get down with the Islanders. It will be 8 weeks of rest with no surgery for several of his injuries.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes could have a different look next year as Eric Cole, Joni Pitkanen, Jussi Jokinen, Chad LaRose, Cory Stillman, Pat Dwyer and Jay Harrison are UFA’s. GM Jim Rutherford said that re-signing Cole is a priority. They may be looking to make changes on their blueline, so Joni Pitkanen could be gone.

- Scott Fisher of the Calgary Sun: Alex Tanguay has recorded 65 points for the Flames after signing a 1 year, $1.7 million deal in the off-season. He may have priced himself out of Calgary, but he might be interested in staying in Calgary long-term.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals GM George McPhee said before last night’s game that Mike Green could be in the lineup tonight against the Panthers. Even if Green doesn’t get into tonight’s or Saturday’s game, he’ll be ready to for the playoffs. Green has missed 18 straight games with a concussion.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Mike Commodore has been told by his AHL team, Springfield, that he won’t be playing again this year mainly to give some younger guys the opportunity. In all likelihood he’ll be bought out after the season, he has 2 years left on his contract. It would cost them about $1.15 million in each of the next 4 years.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Hawks forward Troy Brouwer went shoulder first into the boards after missing a check and left the game. He’ll be re-evaluated today.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Koshan thinks that James Reimer has done enough to head into next season as the Maple Leafs number 1 goalie. He’s posted a 20-8-5 record this year, handing the pressure of many must win games.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Ryane Clowe didn’t practice yesterday but could be in the lineup for the Sharks tonight against the Ducks, “How about we go 50-50 — and you knew I was going to do that,” McLellan said. Scott Nicol could get into a game before the end of the season, he’s been out since Feb. 19th. Antero Niittymaki could get a start in one of the Sharks last 3 games, he hasn’t started since Jan. 13th.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Portzline was informed that the Blue Jackets are not interested in claiming Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers.
- Craig Custance vai twitter: Custance was told the Red Wings are not interested in putting a claim on Michael Leighton.

- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman is out indefinitely with a leg hematoma. Wideman was hit in the leg by Tuomo Ruutu on Tuesday, muscle damage appears limited.
Blood was drained from his leg to alleviate pressure, he’s been sending pictures to teammates. A hematoma occurs when blood leaks from a broken blood vessel, artery or capillary into tissue where it doesn’t belong, such as a muscle. It can result in compartment syndrome, which involves increased pressure in a muscle compartment that can lead to permanent muscle or nerve damage.
Mike Knuble said Wideman could be out 2 weeks or more. John Erskine left last night’s game and is day-to-day.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Chris Pronger’s broken right hand is not healing as fast as they thought, and he probably won’t get into another regular season game. They had hoped to get him into a game next week. Jody Shelley is healing quickly and could return next week. Brian Boucher is expected to start today against the Devils.
- Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: The Flames quest for the playoffs this year are likely over. Ales Kotalik and Niklas Hagman are not likely to be back next year. Alex Tanguay and Curtis Glencross will be UFA’s at seasons end. If Glencross is looking for a 5 year deal, he may have to look elsewhere. Jarome Iginla has 2 more year left on his contract, and hasn’t given any indication he “wants to seek greener pastures.” Miikka Kiprusoff has 3 years left at a $5.833 cap hit, so he’s not that attractive to other teams, especially if they’d want a good return.Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Ales Kotalik was sent back to the minors yesterday afternoon. He has 1 more year left at $3 million. Daymond Langkow could play tonight, a year since he suffered broken vertebrae.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby practiced with teammates yesterday. There is no timetable for his return, and GM Ray Shero doesn’t see that he’ll be given clearance to return before the end of the regular season.
“Whether you’re coming back from injury going into the playoffs or it’s the regular season, you’ve got to make sure that you’re healthy,” Crosby said. “It’s a matter for me of making sure that I’m healthy. If that takes two months, then it takes two months. If it doesn’t, great. I can’t really control that.
“I’ve just got to do the right things to try to feel good and get back to where I need to be. I’m not looking too far ahead at all. I’m just trying to look at these little opportunities as a good chance to get back with the guys. At the same time, it’s a small step with a lot to go.”
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers are planning on alternating goalies down the stretch. Chris Mason started last night, Ondrej Pavelec could start Saturday and back with Mason next week versus Nashville.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche should know next week if Adam Foote is able to get back in the lineup before he retires from the NHL. Peter Budaj will start in net for the Avs tonight.

- Arthur Staple of Newsday: Sources are saying Burke wants at least 3 pieces for Tomas Kaberle: a current NHLer, a prospect, and a possibly a 1st round pick. It’s doubtful the NY Rangers would give up that much. Evgeny Grachev and Dale Weise would be involved, but the Rangers aren’t giving up a 1st round pick for a rental. The Leafs may also move JS Giguere and Kris Versteeg.
- Joshua Cooper via twitter: Scouts in Nashville last night were from Tampa, Vancouver, Phoenix, Anaheim, and double Toronto.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: The Ducks will either waive or trade a defenseman or 2 within 24-48 hours, Mara and Brookbank are possibilities. They currently have 9 defenseman on their roster.
- James Mirtle via twitter: The addition of Joffery Lupul could make Kris Versteeg expendable. Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Chesnokov thinks the Thrashers have been scouting Versteeg for awhile.
- James Mirtle via twitter: As of right now it looks like Tomas Kaberle could walk for nothing on July 1st.
- Howard Berger via twitter: Expect the Leafs to pull off at least 2 more trades by the deadline.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Martin Brodeur, out with a sprained right knee, won’t be in Toronto tonight, and likely out tomorrow vs. the Sharks.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche expect Peter Forsberg to have is visa paper in order in time for at least one game this weekend, they play Friday and Saturday night. Kyle Cumiskey suffered a head injury last night and didn’t return to the game. Cumiskey has missed most of the season with a concussion. Adan Foote is listed as day-to-day with a foot injury.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis had his face bounce off the glass from a Ryan Getzlaf hit. He laid on the ice for several minutes before skating off. Asked if he’ll be out Saturday, Vigneault said: “Right now, I can’t tell you. I saw him after the game and he was fine.” Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Ryan Getzlaf won’t be suspended for the hit. - John Down of the Calgary Herald: The Calgary Flames will be with Alex Tanguay for an indefinite period with a neck strain, it was originally reported that it was a concussion.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom took part in full practice yesterday and is close to returning to the lineup. Enstrom has missed the last 6 games.

- Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post: The Philadelphia Flyers have about $3.5 million in cap space, and may look to find a winger that can play on their 3rd line with Mike Richards and James van Riemsdyk (how many teams would like to have them on their 1st line?). Rental players they may look at include: PA Parenteau, Alex Tanguay, Radek Dvorak, Chris Higgins, Milan Hejduk and Radim Vrbata. The Flyers don’t have a 2nd round pick in this year’s draft. Talks are ongoing with Ville Leino, and the Flyers are believed to have offered a 3 years and $9 million or 4 years, $12 million.
- Roger Millions via twitter: A source told Millions that the Blackhawks might be talking about trading Brent Seabrook, possibly to the Oilers. Million’s responds, “Really? C’mon.”
- Mark Spector via twitter: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said he’d consider trading the 1st round pick they got from the Maple Leafs in the Phil Kessel deal: “Yeah, I’d look at it. Sure.” Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Confirms that Chiarelli told WEEI that he’d considering trading Toronto’s 1st round pick.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Zach Bogosian’s name has come up recently in trade rumors. Bogosian was the 3rd overall pick in 2008 behind Stamkos and Doughty. Is he really available? Yes, but it would take a big offer to get the Thrashers to move him. Thrashers GM Rick Dudley would say nobody on his team is an untouchable. They are not shopping him around either, but would listen to anything. It’s a longshot that he’s traded. Bogosian has struggled this year, recording only 11 points in 45 games so far, though he has played better of late.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky was wearing a no-contact jersey at practice yesterday. He’s still recovering from a severely separated shoulder that he chose to rehab over surgery. His return is still unknown, it could a week, two, or longer. Guillaume Latendresse is skating by himself, but it’s unsure when he’ll start practicing with the team.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Keith Ballard only suffered a knee sprain after being tangled up (some say slew foot) with Milan Michalek on Monday. He’ll be out 3 to 4 weeks. Sami Salo is eligible to return for Saturday’s game against the Flames.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: It looks like the Calgary Flames won’t be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. They are in the playoff race, and they don’t have the draft picks or the prospects.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Islanders forward Trent Hunter had surgery on his torn MCL and should be ready for training camp next year.
- David Neal of the Miami Herald: Scouts attending last night’s Blues-Panthers game were from: the Devils, Hurricanes, Penguins, Senators, Bruins, Rangers, Canucks, and Kings.
