Morning Hits: Nill, Nieuwendyk, Malone, Flames, Neuvirth, Ducks, Luongo, Jets and Sabres

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Sources saying that Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill will replace GM Joe Nieuwendyk in Dallas. Andy Strickland: Confirms reports that Nill will replace Nieuwendyk.
  • Erik Erlendsson: Erlendsson doesn’t see the Lightning buying out Ryan Malone or Teddy Purcell. Trading Malone is a possibility.
  • The Fourth Period: It’s thought that the Flames were close to trading Cory Sarich at the deadline. Teams also called about Lee Stempniak, Curtis Glencross and Alex Tanguay. GM Jay Feaster has indicated that he isn’t really interested in trading Glencross. If Miikka Kiprusoff retires, the Flames will be on the lookout for a new No.1 goalie.
  • Mike Vogl: The Capitals signed Michal Neuvirth to a 2-year, $5 million extension. He’ll earn $2.4 million next year, and $2.6 million the following year.
  • Eric Stephens: Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau won’t name is starting goalie for Game 1, but added that he’s known who it will be for awhile.
  • Andi Petrilli: (Canucks lose 7-2, 6 goals in the third) Canucks Roberto Luongo was off the ice, undressed, showered and out of the arena in 12 minutes. Jason Botchford: “I’m not sure how furious Luongo is. He should be used to getting hung out there and embarrassed by now.”
  • Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets have nine RFAs, including: Zach Bogosian, Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little. Wiebe thinks they should lock up Bogosian to a max-length eight year deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $48 to 50 million.

    “You never know. It’s a negotiation. It’s not something that usually happens overnight. “I don’t really know what I’m expecting as far as how smooth or how not smooth it’s going to go,” said Bogosian. “Yeah, I’ve really kind of settled in here and I’ve enjoyed my time. Whether it’s two years, eight years or 10 years, I’m going to enjoy playing here.

    “I’m looking forward to that next step. I want to be part of the solution moving forward, as far as getting in the playoffs and winning a championship.”

    Wheeler will be looking for a raise from his $2.55 million, and could get a long-term deal.

    Little should get a multi-year deal for more than the $3 million he was making.

    Alex Burmistrov is an interesting case, as some think he could bolt for the KHL or could use a fresh start with a new organization.

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres Thomas Vanek has thought that Friday’s game could have been his last in a Sabres uniform.

    “Let’s be honest,” Vanek said. “I’m not stupid. I know I have a year left and they can probably deal me for prospects, young guys, whatever else is out there. Yeah, I’ve thought about it. If it looks like it’s a long rebuild, then it probably makes sense for both parties to move on.”

    “I don’t know what the plan is,” Vanek said. “If they’re turning it over to the younger guys, it’s a turnover. Or are they going to build around us again? It’s all speculation at this point because you guys don’t know and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

    Sabres Ryan Miller also realizes that his days could be number.

    “Around this stage of a contract, you have to be realistic,” Miller said. “In the last year of your deal, if you’re not part of the plan, you become an asset that’s tradable. So I’m just trying to stay open to coming back and trying to stay excited about playing hockey games in the NHL if it’s not going to work out.”

Injury Notes: Kovalchuk, Tanguay, Hemsky, Malkin, Oshie and Bergeron

  • Tom Gulitti: Ilya Kovalchuk said yesterday that he needs “a few more days” for his shoulder to gain more strength. He doesn’t think he’ll travel with the team on Sunday to Toronto on Monday night.
  • Chris Nichols: Flames winger Alex Tanguay will be out four to six weeks with a grade two MCL sprain.
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers Ales Hemsky will miss at least two more of the teams remaining seven games with a foot injury. The team asked Hemsky not to give details of the injury. He’ll have another MRI later this week.
  • Josh Yohe: Penguins Evgeni Malkin was a late scratch due to an upper-body injury. The Penguins confirm the injury is ”100 percent not related to sunburn.”
  • Lou Korac: Blues TJ Oshie is close to returning. They didn’t skate yesterday, but skated well in previous days.
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Patrice Bergeron could return to the Bruins lineup as early as Monday against the Senators. Bergeron missed his sixth straight game yesterday due to a concussion.

    “There’s no limitations anymore,” Bergeron said. “I can initiate contact and take contact and practice, obviously. Teammates always take it easy on you. But I feel fine. It’s good news that I’m cleared for that.”

NHL Rumors V: Flames, Maple Leafs, Luongo, Kiprusoff and Torres

  • The Fourth Period: Source said that the Flames are close to trading defenseman Cory Sarich. The Flames are also getting interested in Anton Babchuk, Curtis Glencross, Alex Tanguay and Lee Stempniak. Some teams have looked at Mike Cammalleri, but the Flames aren’t close to moving him.
  • Darren Dreger: The Maple Leafs and Canucks had more talks today about Roberto Luongo. Sounding like the Canucks are looking for more than the Leafs are willing to give up. Leafs will decide tomorrow on whether to acquire either Luongo or Miikka Kiprusoff or do nothing.
  • Bob McKenzie: After the Canucks acquired Derek Roy, they let the Leafs know that the parameters on a Luongo deal have changed. They no longer require a center in a deal. The Canucks still think they need to get something tangible back for Luongo to help them into the playoffs. That may still be an issue for the Leafs.
  • John Shannon: IF the Maple Leafs are talking to Miikka Kiprusoff about an contract extension … IF … source says: ”They can certainly discuss it,but nothing is binding.”

  • David Pagnotta: Sharks have granted a few teams, including the Wild and Flyers, permission to speak with Ryane Clowe’s agent.
  • The Fourth Period: The Wild are looking for a 2nd line winger. One of GM Fletcher’s targets is Clowe.

    “If I go somewhere, I’m not going to sign unless I see potential, but it’s definitely something I’d be open to,” Clowe told the San Jose Mercury News. “On the other hand, if it had to come down somewhere as a rental it would probably be to a team that’s a top team looking at making a run. We’ll see.”

    If the Wild don’t land Clowe, they could turn to Sabres Jason Pominville or Drew Stafford, Flames Lee Stempniak, Curtis Glencross or Alex Tanguay.

  • Darren Dreger: Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis spoke with Kiprusoff’s agent yesterday, and it’s likely that he’ll speak directly with Kiprusoff today.
  • Mark Masters:  Leafs James Reimer on trade talk: ‘Reimer on deadline buzz: ‘Honestly, it is a distraction … it’s a huge distraction. To not be playing [until Thurs] is almost a benefit’
  • Mark Lazerus: A Blackhawks trade target Arthur Staple: Islanders and Mark Streit are unable to agree on a contract extension but it’s unlikely that he’s traded.
  • George Richards: The Panthers put pending UFA Mike Santorelli on waivers.

NHL Rumors I: Maple Leafs, Canucks, Flames, Oilers and Kings

  • Bruce Garrioch: A lot of teams will see where they stand after last night to determine what they’ll be doing at the deadline.
  • Bob McKenzie of TSN:  “Under the right circumstances” the Maple Leafs could add a veteran goalie. Nonis may be leaning more towards Miikka Kiprusoff than Roberto Luongo. The Leafs are trying to find out if Kiprusoff would consider leaving Calgary. The Canucks asking price hasn’t dropped that much. Not including Nazem Kadri, but still looking for a center, Tyler Bozak, a prospect and a pick.
  • Damien Cox: Cox guesses there is a 60% chance that the Maple Leafs will stick with James Reimer and Ben Scrivens, 15% Miikka Kiprusoff, 15% Robert Luongo and 10% something else.
  • The Fourth Period: The Leafs and Canucks had talks this week, but it may take another team to get a trade done according to a source. Nikolai Kulemin, John-Michael Liles, Korbinian Holzer, Tyler Biggs, Stuart Percy and Jesse Blacker have been attached to a possible trade. The Leafs are open to moving Bozak, but would need to find a replacement for him right away. Derek Roy has been tied to the Leafs. Mike Ribeiro may become available, but the price would be higher. The Flames are taking calls on Alex Tanguay. The Oilers aren’t shopping Shawn Horcoff, but they are taking calls. Liles would  have to be apart of the deal due to salaries, $5.5 million to $3.875 million. The Leafs have asked about Sam Gagner, but it would take a package that includes Morgan Reilly.
  • The Fourth Period: The Kings have inquired about Flames Alex Tanguay and Cory Sarich. The Kings want add a stay-at-home defenseman.  The cost to get Sarich shouldn’t be that high. The Kings are also looking at Sabres Robyn Regehr. Winger Drew Stafford has also been part of talks.

NHL Rumors III: Goalie market, Kings, Sabres, Regehr, Riberio, Talbot, Scouting the Sharks-Ducks

  • Craig Custance of ESPN: There are not many teams that are desperate for a goalie. James Reimer is proving he may be able to lead the Maple Leafs. At the moment there are more goalies available than teams that need goalies, but that could change in the summer. Custance estimates that there could be as many as eight teams looking for a goalie, maybe three or four more depending playoff performances. Things have gone quiet on the Roberto Luongo front, but teams are still calling about him and Cory Schneider. The Canucks may only get full value for Luongo in the summer, with full value being a player that would immediately help them and future piece or two. His $5.3 million cap hit is looking more reasonable, especially if a team can get 5 or 6 years out of him.Some teams who could be looking for a new goalie this offseason:

    Buffalo Sabres: Ryan Miller has one year left on his deal at a cap hit of $6.25 million. He can submit a list of teams he won’t accept a trade too. Some believe he wants out of Buffalo.

    Phoenix Coyotes: The Coyotes and Mike Smith are quietly trying to get a contract extension done before he become a UFA. The uncertainty of the Coyotes is making it hard to do any long-term deals.

    Detroit Red Wings: Jimmy Howard will be a UFA after this season, and there is “no update” on contact talks.

    Minnesota Wild: GM Chuck Fletcher said in email that contract talks with Niklas Backstrom will wait until the offseason. How much is Backstrom worth? They have Josh Harding for the next two years at $1.9 million a season, as well as 22-year old Darcy Kuemper.

    Philadelphia Flyers: Ilya Bryzgalov hasn’t been the Flyers biggest problem. The idea of a compliance buyout will be considered. He’s signed through 2019-20. ”That’s something a normal organization wouldn’t do,” one NHL source said. “But they’re not a normal organization.”

  • Elliott Pap: Canucks Roberto Luongo on trade speculation: ”I’m obviously not exactly sure what’s going to happen.”
  • Eklund: Source said that Roberto Luongo will the top player available at the deadline.
  • Dennis Bernstein: The Kings are inquiring about: Robyn Regehr, Drew Stafford, Ryane Clowe and Alex Tanguay.
  • The Fourth Period: Trade talks are picking up for the Sabres and Robyn Regehr. The Kings, Red Wings and Senators are looking to upgrade their blue line. The Sabres are said to be looking for a draft pick and a top prospect for Regehr. The Sabres are looking for a prospect who is close to NHL ready. The Kings and Sabres have been watching each other in the past few weeks. Regehr fits the bill of a stay-at-home, rugged defenseman that the Kings have been looking for. Reports are that they may have discussed including Drew Stafford in a deal.
  • Renaud Lavoie: Mike Ribeiro rejected a three year offer from the Capitals, but he hopes to stay.
  • Mark Lazerus: Mike Riberio and Derek Roy are the top center options, but the price might be too high for the Blackhawks.
  • Renaud Lavoie: There is lots of interest in Max Talbot, but the Flyers are saying he “not available.”
  • Kevin Kurz: Scouting the Sharks-Ducks game: No less than 13 teams at the game including the Flyers, Bruins, Islanders, Canadiens and Maple Leafs.

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Predators defenseman Shea Weber has a hearing today at 2:00 pm for a boarding call last night.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Flames GM Jay Feaster:

    “I’m not going to sit around and wait”, Feaster told ESPN.com Thursday. “There is urgency here. There’s very much a sense of urgency. We kept this group together for a reason this summer. We articulated what that was and articulated to the players. They talked about the need to get off to a good start. We saw what happened last season when you dig yourself a hole. We played like our pants were on fire in the second half last year and it [still] wasn’t enough. We’re all paying lip service to what we needed to do. Now we need to do it.”

    “Obviously I’m making phone calls and people are making phone calls to me,’’ said Feaster. “It’s not something I’m looking to do, I want to win with this group. That’s what I want to do.

    “We like the team we have. But we talked repeatedly about it all summer and in camp, the need to get off to a good start.’’

    Senators GM Bryan Murray:

    “Yes, and I hate to say this, but if there’s a need on another team for a veteran defenseman, we’ll probably one have available that we’d be willing to talk about.’’

    Sergei Gonchar still has another year left at $5.5 million and a no-movement clause.

  • Adrian Dater of SI.com: Dater runs through some players who could be traded, and who might be interested. 1. Rene Bourque (CAL) – The Avalanche could offer one of their top 3 defensive prospects and/or throw in winger TJ Galiardi. 2. Jay Bouwmeester (CAL) – Dater wonders about a Bouwmeester for Tuomo Ruutu deal. 3. Lots of Blue Jackets – Rich Nash is due between $7.5 and $8.2 million until 2017-18. The last 6 years of Fedor Tyutin’s deal are for $4.5 million. Marc Mathot has a 4 year deal at $3 million. James Wisniewski has a 6 year deal. Dater notes that other than Nash, the others may not get much interest. 4. Derek Morris (PHO) on a 3 year, $2.75 million per deal – Dater proposes a Morris for Alex Tanguay deal. Tanguay signed a 5 year deal at $3.5 million. Dater says that Olli Jokinen makes sense too. Adrian Dater via twitter: Some of the trade scenario talk was meant to have some humor too.
  • Eric Engels via twitter: As for Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier giving Andrei Markov a 3 year deal, Gauthier said mid-season last year that they weren’t concerned about Markov’s rehab. That his injuries didn’t factor into their desire to want him to return and his want to re-sign with the Canadiens.
  • Josh Yole via twitter: Evgeni Malkin is looking better as practice goes on today. Will be interesting to see if he’ll play tomorrow.
  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens forward Scott Gomez left last night’s game with an upper-body injury. He was initially hurt after taking a hit from Engelland, tried for one more shift after, but then left.

Lemieux speaks with Jagr … Kings maybe looking for a LWer … Smyth to CAL or EDM … Kings may go after the other Richards … Leafs looking to deal

  • Josh Yole of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Mario Lemieux came away encourage from his talk with Jaromir Jagr. The Pens haven’t made an offer to Jagr, and are unsure if he’d take less money then he may get elsewhere. Detroit could offer more money. Jagr can’t sign anywhere until July 1st as it’s a “blackout period” now as stipulated in the CBA. Sources are saying Pens GM Ray Shero may not want to pay more than $1 million for Jagr.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The LA Kings left wing wish list could line up like: Eric Cole, Simon Gagne, Ryan Malone, Alex Tanguay, and Cory Stillman.
  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The Flames are interested in trading for Ryan Smyth, though their level of interest isn’t known. If they don’t think they can get Alex Tanguay signed, they would have a hole on the left wing and would have a “net presence on the powerplay.” Maybe the Kings would take Ales Kotalik and his $3 million, could bury him in the minors.
  • Nick Cotsonika via twitter: Ryan Smyth asked to be moved close to home. Kings GM Lombardi is down to 2 teams, started with 3. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Kings had more trade talks with the Flames and Oilers yesterday about Smyth, he’s going to end up in Alberta.
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: A high draft pick will likely be packaged with Ryan Smyth in any trade to accommodate taking on his contract.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It doesn’t look like the Ottawa Senators will be able to move up from the #6 spot in tonight’s draft.

    “We’ve been asked if we’d be willing to move a player with a pick rather than two picks,” Murray told The Team 1200. “It depends on the player. I think one team did ask about a little Swedish defenceman (Erik Karlsson) and the sixth overall and it was politely declined. There are lots of ideas out there that we don’t agree with and there will be lots of offers. You just have to pick the right one.

    “I can see us moving two picks for sure, if not three, but I believe the price for moving up for one pick is usually two picks, not three picks. That’s what it has been in the past. I could see us moving a couple of picks. We could be talking about (keeping) eight or nine picks, but we could be talking 11. I would guess that we would probably trade two picks.”

  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Brian Burke,

    “I’ve got lots of lines in the water,” the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager said. “But I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

    The Maple Leafs are trying to land a #1 center or move up in the draft. They have the #25, #30, and #39 picks but they are not enough to get close to the top 5 picks. He may not be that interested in moving the #25 pick to get “to the teens” as picks from #10 to around #26 are not much different in quality. Burke couldn’t answer questions regarding whether he was in on Mike Richards and/or Jeff Carter as it would violate NHL tampering rules. Darren Dreger reported that the Flyers called about Nazem Kadri and Nikolai Kulemin but never got to Burke (see one of yesterday’s posts for a little more info on it).

  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke wants to see if winger Clarke MacArthur is a one year wonder before giving him a long-term deal, “The problem is I’m not prepared to commit to a long-term contract for a player who really had one productive year.”It would seem that negotiations for the RFA have come to a halt.

    “Putting a value on that is not easy either. That’s why we haven’t been able to sign him. It’s not that he’s being unreasonable, it’s just ‘What is he?’

    “Is he a 70-point player or is he a 35-point player where he has been most of his career, so I’m not surprised we’re having a difficult time arriving at a value.”

    Burke on RFA Luke Schenn,

    “There doesn’t appear to be any urgency on that one from their side,” Burke said of negotiations with Schenn’s camp. “They’ll probably wait and see if other teams sign contracts that they think might help them.”

  • CP in the Globe and Mail: The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed Andrei Markov to a 3 year, $17.25 million deal, a $5.75 million cap hit.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract breakdown: “$10M, $6.5M, $8M, $6M, $6M,, $5.5M, $5.5M $2.25M, $1.25M.”
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Robyn Regehr was going to sleep on the proposed trade that would send him to Buffalo. He’s already spoken with Darcy Regier and Terry Pegula.
  • Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Max Talbot rejected a 3 year offer from the Penguins last week. It’s believed to be a “slight” decrease in pay from his previous $1.05 million salary, possibly in the $800,000 range. If Talbot is going to take a reduction in pay, he may be wanting a 4 year deal.

Free agent updates involving Jagr, Doughty, Tanguay, Selanne, Bryzgalov, the Canadiens and Red Wings

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Multiple sources confirmed that Jaromir Jagr approached the Pittsburgh Penguins about a possible return. The Red Wings, Rangers, Capitals and Canadiens are also of interest to Jagr. The Penguins may be open to the idea, the Pens were waiting for Jagr to contact them. The Penguins have 17 players under contract at $55.5 million.
  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens have 15 players under contract for next year after the signings of Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais. Andrei Markov’s side and GM Pierre Gauthier are still working on a deal and will meet at the draft. The Canadiens will have about $20.3 million available with the cap going up to about $64 million. Yannick Weber’s signing should be announced soon. They should have plenty of space available after Markov and Josh Gorges are signed to add a top 6 forward.
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said they continue to negotiate with Jonathan Ericsson. They will decide in the next 10 days whether to offer a contract to Ruslan Salei. Rookie Brendan Smith will be given every opportunity to make the team. On trade talks, “We’ve received a few calls over the last week or so,” Holland said of potential trade opportunities. “Teams out there know we have a need on defense and we have cap space.” Jiri Hudler and Valtteri Filppula could be dangled. If they go the free agent route, Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff, Sami Salo, James Wisniewski, Joni Pitkanen and Ed Jovanovski could be options.
  • Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: The Calgary Flames would like to bring winger Alex Tanguay back, but there are large difference between the two sides, “it’s money” according to GM Jay Feaster. He’s likely looking for a big raise from the $1.7 million he made last year.

    “Well, I’d like to think we can (sign him). But we’re not where we need to be, and there’s still a lot of work to be done,” Feaster said. “We’ll have to see where it goes.

    “I think the fact we’re talking is a good thing.”

    Feaster has talked with other teams about moving up or down in the draft.

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne is still silent on whether he’ll return next season or retire. He’s said for months that he’ll decide by July 1st.
  • Tim Rohan of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on Ilya Bryzgalov talks,

    “Well, we would like that to get resolved at some point,” Holmgren said Monday on a conference call. “There is still enough time after the draft to get a deal done. The important thing is that there was progress made when Ilya [Bryzgalov] and his agent, Ritch Winter, were in town. I don’t see any reason why that’s not going to continue.

    “I don’t have a crystal ball, so I can’t really give you a definitive answer. There is enough progress, which kind of gives me hope, anyway, that we can make a deal at some point.”

    Holmgren added that at some point there needs to be a compromise on years and amount. TSN is reporting that the salary cap will be set at $64 million with the floor being $48 million. After July 1st, teams are able to go over the salary cap by 10%. Holmgren would also like to re-sign Ville Leino.

  • Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Kings GM Dean Lombardi on Drew Doughty’s contract negotiations,

    I went up there (to Toronto) four weeks ago and opened up the dialogue (with agent Don Meehan). It was very clear, at that time, where it looked like it was headed. We came back and did our planning, looked at our options and what we could offer him, looked at the market, went to the GM meetings and then I flew up to Toronto from those meetings for another meeting (with Meehan). When you have the first meeting, you’re kind of laying the ground rules or whatever. This one was a little more focused. Things become clearer and we say, `OK, if this is going to get done, this is probably where it needs to be.’ Then I think we made a very serious offer to him this past week. I’m hoping to really push this forward at the draft.”

  • Greg Brady via twitter: Sources tell Brady the earliest the Stanley Cup Finals would start would be next Monday. There will be no games on this Saturday regardless.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If the Rangers wait until July 1st to go after Brad Richards, they’ll have steep competition in Toronto and Los Angeles, and the price may go up. Brooks thinks the Rangers should make an offer to the Stars before July 1st, so Richards an get acquainted with the organization, and they could get full info on his concussion this past season. Brooks thinks the Rangers should offer the Stars a 2nd round pick (#57) for Richards.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater doesn’t think the Avalanche will offer any a goalie a contract in the $5-6 million per season range. Free agent goalies in that range are Ilya Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun. Other possible goalies could be: Josh Harding – risky, JS Giguere – too many miles, Marty Turco – no thanks, Chris Osgood – pass. The trade route could be an option but comes with a price: Jonathan Quick, Jonathan Bernier, or Cory Schneider – all expensive. If they go after Vokoun, Dater would only offer a 3 year deal worth $10 million. Peter Budaj won’t be back, and they can’t go into the season hoping Brian Elliott is the answer.
  • Will DePaoli via twitter: The Penguins have begun talks with Craig Adams. Nothing is imminent but it’s possible that they could get a deal done this week.
  • Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM Jay Feaster said on the radio yesterday that he has confidence the Flames will re-sign winger Alex Tanguay. “We believe we can,” the general manager said on NHL Live. “We do want to get him signed.” Tanguay signed a 1 year deal worth $1.7 million last year, and recorded 22 goals and 69 points. The Flames have 17 players under contract for next year with a cap hit of $55.8 million with an expected cap around $62.2 million. Ales Kotalik and his $3 million salary could be off to the minors next season. The future of Niklas Hagman and his $3 million is also in doubt. The Flames hope to re-sign backup goalie Henrik Karlsson. They have 4 UFA defenseman, Anton Babchuk ($1.4 million), Adam Pardy ($700,000), Steve Staios ($2.7 million) and Brett Carson ($500,000). Brendan Mikkelson ($687,500) is a RFA.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: With the strong play of Maple Leafs prospects Jesse Blacker (Owen Sound) and Jake Gardiner, Carl Gunnarson could be vulnerable as Brian Burke continue to look for a number 1 center.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: St. Louis Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko has decided to spend another year in the KHL. Update: “Sibir GM tells SovSport the Blues made an “exclusive offer” to Tarasenko “like no other…guaranteeing he’d play.” “Sibir GM to Sovsport about the Blues’ offer to Tarasenko: “We had no idea the Blues wanted [Tarasenko] to come so bad. But it’d be better for him to play 1 more year in Russia before moving to the NHL.”

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: With Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen returning from injuries, 2 players will have to be scratched. Mike Modano will likely be a healthy scratch. Kris Draper could be another possibility. Jiri Hudler has played well of late and may keep his spot in the lineup.

Mark Whicker of the OC Register: They list possible players the Ducks may go after this off-season; Joel Ward (Nash), Max Talbot (Pit), Vern Fiddler (Pho), Eric Belanger (Pho), Ville Leino (Phi), Kevin Bieksa (Van), Eric Cole (Car), Alex Tanguay (Cal), Sean Bergenheim (TB), Craig Adams (Pit), Michal Handzus (LA), Mike Rupp (Pit), Patrick Maroon (Phil).

John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller admitted that his late season injury was a concussion. Vogl’s article also has audio from Miller talking about the season, the future, and their goaltending situation.

John Vogl of the Buffalo News: With the new ownership in Buffalo, they may able to go the free agent route to improve this off-season, normally it would have had to been through trade. The Sabres need help at center and on the blueline. They need help down the middle.

Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Gleason wonders if the Sabres will bring Brad Boyes back, he had a good regular season after he came over from St. Louis but struggled in the playoffs. They need help down the middle. Gleason wonders if they could trade away some young prospects for say a Patrick Sharp? Evgeni Malkin? or maybe Danny Briere?

Frank Seravalli via twitter: Flyers goalie Michael Leighton is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Andreas Nodl and Jeff Carter are also listed as day-to-day.
