Top 30 Salary Cap Numbers - Left Wingers

Listed below are the Top 30 Salary Cap Hits for Left Wingers heading into the 2010-11 NHL Season. Nicklas Backtrom Signs a 10 year Extension with the Capitals

The Washington Capitals have locked up star center Nicklas Backstrom for the next 10 seasons. The 22-year olds 10 year deal is worth $67 million according to TSN. A $6.7 million salary cap number is a good number in my opinion.

Backstrom recorded his 1st 100 point season this past year, scoring 33 goals and adding 68 assists. He was also a +37. In 246 career games, Backstrom has scored 69 goals, and 189 assists.

Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom will have a combine salary cap number of $16.238 million. Mike Green also brings a $5.25 million cap number for the next couple years. Alexander Semin will make $6 million next year, and will probably not be with the club the following year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Capitals quietly shop him around.

Stamkos Almost a Ranger … Stars that Could be on the Block … Ovie has Advice for Filatov … Leafs-Gustavsson talking contract

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers GM Glen Sather said he ’shook hands’ on a deal with Lightning co-owner Len Barrie last year, that would have sent Steven Stamkos to the Rangers for 2 or 3 of Michael Del Zotto, Evgeny Grachev, Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky and Dan Girardi. When Barrie took the proposed deal to GM Brian Lawton, Lawton shot it down. Barrie, still wanting to make the deal only needed approval from the other co-owner, Oren Koules. Koules shot it down as well.

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika thinks that several Dallas Stars could be moved this off-season. Possible candidates are Mike Ribeiro, Brad Richards, Matt Niskanen, Fabian Brunnstrom, and James Neal. Neal could be moved if they got a huge return. Ribeiro and Richards are tied together, in that if they can`t get Richards to sign an extension (contract expires after next season), they could move him. If they get Richards on an extension, Ribeiro could be expendable.

  • Columbus Post-Dispatch: Alex Ovechkin has some advice for Nikita Filatov:

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, left, thinks that Blue Jackets prospect Nikita Filatov, a fellow Russian, must come back to the NHL from the Continental Hockey League. “If he wants to play in the NHL, he has to see how different players step up and play,” Ovechkin said.

  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader writes in and asks Molinari if the Penguins can/will re-sign Matt Cooke. If Cooke will re-sign for around the same $1.2 million cap hit, they’ll definitely consider it. If not, they have Dustin Jeffrey that might be ready to step in for that role.

  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Tomas Vanek (lower body) and Tim Connolly (foot) are still not close to returning to practice. The Sabres must be praying that they’ll be ready for the playoffs.

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The 37-year-old Daniel Alfredsson will play his 1,000th game on Thursday. Alfie is still scoring at a point-a-game pace, and GM Bryan Murray figures he still has another 3 good years left.

  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Chris Mason steady play this season may earn him a contract extension with the Blues, and bide some time while they decide on who will be their goalie of the future. In their organization they have, Ben Bishop, Joe Fallon, and Jake Allen, but anyone of them may not be the answer they are looking for. Trading for Cory Schneider continues to be an option, but the Canucks may still want David Backes, which won’t happen. Price or Halak is another trade option, but they’d be in competition with several other teams.

  • Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Preliminary talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Jonas Gustavsson have begun, but Gustavsson isn`t paying attention to the financial side until after the season.

Ovechkin Hits Campbell from Behind … Weight’s Career Over? Cogliano Would Like to Stay in Edmonton

  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Chicago Blackhawks may be without defenseman Brian Campbell for the remainder of the season with a broken collarbone, after being hit from behind by Alex Ovechkin (youtube video below). The Blackhawks probably won’t agree with Ovie’s comments, “It was not a hard hit,” Ovechkin said. “I just pushed him. I respect everybody, but on the ice it can’t be everything. We play for our team and make some hard hits and sometimes you get hurt. It’s a hockey game. He fell bad, and that’s probably why it looks bad.” Ovechkin received a 5 minute major and a game misconduct.
  • Bill Lankhof on Slam Sports: Andrew Cogliano hasn’t had the season he’d hoped for. Cogliano found himself on the 3rd and 4th lines, and subject to many trade rumors leading up to the trade deadline. The 22-year-old would like to stay in Edmonton, but there are no guarantees, as he’s one player the Oilers have that might be back something nice. He has worked his way back to a top 6 forward on the Oilers the past couple weeks.
  • Dan Martin of the NY Post: New York Islanders captain Doug Weight will be out for the remainder of the year after having surgery to fix a torn rotator cuff and labrum. There is some thought that this could be the end of his NHL career. If the injury heals well, he hopes to return next season.
  • John Tranchina of the Denver Post: Both Cody McLeod and Stephane Yelle left yesterday’s Avalanche game with leg injuries. The Avalanche are already without Brandon Yip, David Koci, David Jones and Ruslan Sulei.

Around the Boards: Semin resigning for 1 year, Rangers need some size, Who will captain the Capitals and Leafs?

    • Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo’s Puck Daddy: Though it’s not official yet, all signs are that the Capitals have signed Alex Semin to a 1 year, $6 million deal. After next season, Semin would become an unrestricted free agent. It has been mentioned that Semin could be bolting for the KHL in the next couple years. Chesnokov interviews Semin in this article.
    • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers have been searching from some scoring, and now have Prospal out for 10-21 days, but Brooks thinks they have another issue. “It is imperative that GM Glen Sather acquire big bodies who will use them, even if it means sacrificing some of the skill level that coach John Tortorella covets in his athletes.”
    • Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Both the Canucks and Mathieu Schneider deal a trade is the best interests of all sides. He signed with the club this past offseason as they both felt he could fit will on the power play, but the acquisition that brought in Christian Ehrhoff changed that.
    • Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: With the trade of Chris Clark yesterday by the Capitals, the team captaincy opened up. Most people will calling for Ovechkin to get the ‘C’, but Mike Knuble or Brooks Laich could be other options.
    • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Ian White has added his name to the list of candidates to be next Maple Leafs captain.  White joins current alternate captains Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek, Tomas Kaberle, and possibly Matt Stajan and Phil Kessel.

Around the Boards: Scouts watching Ducks, Antti Niemi getting more games, ‘Hitch’ safe for now, OV returns

  • The Orange County Register: The Anaheim Ducks have lost 5 consecutive games, and only won 4 of their last 14 games. They find themselves close to the bottom of the league standings. Is it time to make changes? Scouts from 10 teams were at last nights game.
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Chicago Blackhawks’ backup goalie, Antti Niemi, has played well of late and may find himself getting more starts in net.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Despite going 1-5-3 in their last 9 games, GM Scott Howson has said that Ken Hitchcock’s job is safe. “Hitch is safe,” Howson said. “To suggest otherwise is just ludicrous. It has not even entered anybody’s mind. It’s not something we’d even consider.”
  • Alexander Ovechkin returns from his 2 game suspension tonight.
  • Slick Nik Antropov and Pavol Kubina return to Toronto tonight as the Thrashers face the Leafs.

Around the Boards: Forsberg staying in Sweden, Toews-Kane-Keith signing today? Filatov back to KHL?

    • Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: Canucks GM Mike Gillis informed reporters that Peter Forsberg won’t be coming Canucks, or any other NHL club, instead opting to with Modo for the remainder of the season.
    • Chric Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Tuesday could be a big day for the Chicago Blackhawks as they might be announcing that they have signed all 3 of their big restricted free agents. Its been out there for a couple days that Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were close to resigning, but it appears that Duncan Keith is close as well. I’m definitely interested in these contracts, and to see how they’ll manage the cap next season. Next years cap is expected to be slightly lower than the $56.8 million this year, but without including these 3, their 2010-11 cap number is around $43 million for 13 players.
    • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Penguins: The hockey gods are punishing the Penguins now for winning the Cup last season, as they’ve lost another defenceman to injury. Alex Goligoski will be out for 2 to 3 weeks with an undisclosed injury. Goligoski joins defenceman Gonchar, Letang and Orpik, and forwards Kennedy, Kunitz and Talbot. Some good news should be coming soon as several players are close to returning.
    • Tom Reed and Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Unhappy with playing and being a healthy scratch, Nikita Filatov of the Blue Jackets could be on his way to the CSKA Moscow of the KHL. The Blue Jackets and Filatov are expected to meet today to discuss him staying with the club. The former 6th overall pick in 2008 has been in the doghouse for his lack of competitive play, and is averaging about 8 minutes on the 4th line.
    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin practiced yesterday and is expected to return tonight against the New York Rangers.

Around the Boards: Injury News - Ovechkin, Dubinsky, Letang

  • Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo’s Puck Daddy Blog: Chesnokov interviewed Alex Ovechkin over the weekend and Ovie had this to say:

    Q. You’re in good mood. Are you getting better?
OVECHKIN: I am better. But I will miss 4-5 weeks.

This was news to the Capitals who denied the report:

“The Washington Capitals dispute the validity of this report,” the team told ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun.

  • Steve Zipay of the Newsday: Brandon Dubinsky of the New York Rangers may be out from up to 3 weeks with a broken bone in his right hand.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Pittsburgh Penguins are already without Sergei Gonchar, may be without Kris Letang. Letang fell on his right side during the 1st period of Saturday’s game, and did not return, leaving the ice favoring his right arm. He’ll be re-evaluated today.

Around the Boards: Phil Kessel, Sam Gagne, Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Elias Updates, Wisniewski Suspended

    • Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Phil Kessel is expected to receive clearance from doctors this morning to make his Toronto Maple Leafs debut tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kessel has been skating with Jason Blake and Matt Stajan. The problem I see with this line is that both Blake and Kessel like to shoot the puck a lot. It will be interesting to see how Stajan handles both shooters.
    • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Sam Gagne will be out of the Flyers lineup for 6-8 weeks after his hernia and abdominal surgery today. Though he definitely will be missed, it creates an opportunity for some of the Flyers younger kids to step up. Also, Daniel Briere hope to practice tomorrow, with the goal of playing on Friday.
    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alexander Ovechkin is listed as wee-to-week with an upper body strain. Brooks Laich take Ovechkin’s spot on the line with Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison.
    • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Jonathan Toews is still not allowed to skate, no timetable on his return has been set. There’s a chance that Marian Hossa returns before November 25th.
    • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Struggling Canadiens winger Andrei Kostitsyn has been demoted to 4th line. Kostitsyn has only 1 goal and 3 assists in 14 games, and received only 7:32 minutes of ice time on Saturday.
    • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski was suspended for 2 games for his elbow on Shane Doan.
    • Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger: Patrick Elias for the first time this season with the Devils and is eying a weekend return the lineup. He’ll give the Devils a much needed offensive jolt.
    • Brian Mullen of the Nashville Tennessean: Shea Weber will be out the Nashville Predators lineup for 1 to 2 weeks.
    • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Matt Pettinger signed on for his second stint with the Vancouver Canucks after inking a 1 year, 2-way, $500k contract.
