Oils want a Dman … Bruins want depth … MacArthur “Rumors suck” … CSKA wants Radulov … Koivu close … Filatov demoted … Starting goalies
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Starting Goalies on January 31st, 2012
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: Don’t be surprised if Predators GM David Poile announces that he won’t trade Ryan Suter. The Preds were one team who sent a private jet to pick up there All-Stars: Suter, Shea Weber and Craig Smith. The Oilers are letting teams know they want a defenseman if/when they trade some of their assets. Bruins coach Claude Julien would like to see them add an experienced depth defenseman and a depth forward.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs and Mikhail Grabovski are not involved in serious contract talks. Grabovski shrugs off trade rumors that involve him as part of a package. Clarke MacArthur’s name is also coming up in rumors.
“There is always something every day,” MacArthur said. “Usually if I don’t hear it, I get a text message from someone saying they heard a rumour. It’s tiring, it’s hard on you, but it is a part of the job.
“(Rumours) suck, but what are you going to do? If you look close, I have a few grey hairs.”
The Leafs have been linked to Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan, Ales Hemsky, Tuomo Ruutu and Ryane Clowe recently.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: The Canucks need to add a top 4 defenseman as insurance and some grit up front. Mason Raymond will hear is name is rumors often. The Canucks could use someone like Travis Moen.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: CSKA is making a pitch for Alexander Radulov with intent of signing him to a long-term contract. CSKA has lots of oil money. Radulov has a “gentleman’s agreement” with Salavat that he can leave for the NHL (Preds) this summer despite his contract. CSKA is trying to buy his rights.
- BD Gallof via twitter: Gallof says not to assume that the Islanders will trade Evgeni Nabokov.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks defenseman Brent Burns is expected to return tonight. Forward Ryane Clowe status is uncertain.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild Guillaume Latendresse and Mikko Koivu were practicing yesterday, but neither’s return is imminent. Josh Harding will start tonight.
“They’re going to need some time getting acclimated to the group again and getting involved in practices and doing things at game speed and executing at that level before they can jump into the lineup,” said Yeo, adding that he believes Koivu is “much closer” to playing than Latendresse.
- Pavel Lysenkov via twitter: Nikita Filatov has been assigned to the CSKA’s minor league team.

Could Radulov return to Preds next year? Skinner to IR … Leafs call up Kadri … Robidas questionable … Giordano skates
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 21st, 2011
Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: Alexander Radulov on thoughts about returning to the NHL:
“I am not going to say anything about the NHL because actually I never closed the door on the idea of playing there. As far as Salavat Yulaev is concerned, I have a contract with the team for this year and the next. However, it actually contains [a clause] with a possibility of early termination… I am not ruling out anything. Because if there are offers, we will consider them. But overall I am happy with everything at Salavat. You always want to play for a team that is challenging for something. You want to play to win, right?”
Radulov has 1 year left on his entry level deal with the Predators. There was an instance years ago involving Alexander Semin, with the Capitals tearing up the last year of his contract and signing him to a two year deal. Could the same be done for the Predators.
Mark Spector via twitter: The Hurricanes have put Jeff Skinner on the IR and called up Riley Nash.
David Alter via twitter: The Maple Leafs have called up Nazem Kadri, and put Dupuis on the IR. Maple Leafs lines: Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, Frattin-Grabo-Kulie, Kadri-Connolly-MacA, Steckel-Boyce-Crabb, extras, Lombardi,Orr,Rosehill

Randy Sportak via twitter: Flames defenseman Mark Giordano, who has been out with a hamstring injury, is skating by himself today.
Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: JS Giguere will start in net for the Avalanche against the Blues.
Trade groundwork has been laid … Time running short for Turris … Devils and Kings talking … Krejci odd man out … Filatov on his way out
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 17th, 2011
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Teams are closing in on the point where they know what they have and what they may need. Blue GM Doug Armstrong:
“A lot of groundwork has been laid and (Tuesday) was more putting fertilizer on some of those seeds you planted to see what happens. You get more work done when you’re in the room with 30 people than trying to pick up the phone 30 different times.”
Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster:
“We have a lot of work to do,” Flames GM Jay Feaster said. “We’re not happy where we are. We need to improve in a lot of areas. This isn’t acceptable to be where we are right now.”
The Hurricanes are 1-5-0 in their last 6 and are in need of a shakeup. The Islanders have dropped to last in the Eastern Conference. The Jets may be thinking long-term and have 2 UFA’s in Chris Mason and Johnny Oduya. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff:
“I’m not a big believer on putting deadlines on anything,” he said. “You make decisions based on what the right timing is for you. The league puts a lot of deadlines on you for signing guys or trading deadlines, so you certainly have parameters. But I’m not going to put any deadlines on it.”
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The NHL board of governors will vote on realignment at the Dec. 5th-6th meetings. The Wings would like to move to the Eastern Conference, or at least play home-and-homes with the other Conference. Western Conference teams don’t want to see the Red Wings move to the East. Coyotes GM Don Maloney reiterated his stance with Kyle Turris.
“For the 15-hundredth time, we have no intention of trading him, regardless of the offer, at all whatsoever,” Maloney told ESPN.com.
Turris has 1 and 2 year offers from the Coyotes sitting on the table. The Blue Jackets have intensified their efforts to get a goalie. Antero Niittymaki won’t be back for another 3-4 weeks, but could be on the move at some point. Teams have inquired to see if he’s available.
- The Fourth Period: The LA Kings and NJ Devils maybe talking trade, they are both scouting each other. The Devils have been interested in Jonathan Bernier in the past, but sources close to the Kings have said they are not interested in trading Bernier at this moment, unless blown away by an offer. The Devils may also be looking for some scoring help, but that help likely isn’t coming from the Kings, unless they are interested in Dustin Penner. Dustin Brown and Jack Johnson could be trade candidates as well.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson notes the Predators have positioned themselves well to retain both Ryan Suter and Shea Weber. They may be able to get Suter in the 7 years for $49 million range and Weber for 6 or 5 years at $7.5 million. Matheson doesn’t see them trading either defenseman and wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander Radulov returns to Nashville next season. Matheson also thinks that if Linus Omark isn’t called up in the next month, he’ll head back to Europe.
- James Murphy via twitter: Murphy calls the Rask for Nash rumors bogus and comical.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty thinks that David Krejci could be the odd guy out in Boston with Bergeron and Seguin down the middle. The Bruins aren’t sure he’s a $5 million a year guy.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: CSKA of the KHL is working on a loan with the Senators regarding Nikita Filatov.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has said again that he is not interested in Marty Turco. Names on Burke’s radar could be Scott Clemmensen (FLA), Evgeni Nabokov (NYI) and Antero Niittymaki (SJ). Saturday will mark 4 weeks since James Reimer has hit by Brian Gionta. Ben Scrivens will start tonight, marking his 6th start in the last 7 games.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein wonders if it’s time for the Trent Hunter experiment in LA to end, and to bring up a young speedy forward.
- Tim Sassone via twitter: If Blackhawks Rostislav Olesz is sent to the minors, they’ll have $6.95 million in cap space. Plenty of room for a center and/or a power play QB.
Injury notes on Carter, Whitney, Kesler, Malkin, Hossa, Krejci, DiPietro, Gonchar, Penner, Kennedy, Havlat, McDonald and Neuvirth
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 17th, 2011
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter is questionable for tomorrow’s game against the Stars.
“It’s a little hairline crack in his foot where he took a shot,” Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. “It’s an old injury. We’ll see where it’s at. It’s on the top (of the foot). We’re hoping it won’t be too long here. He’s questionable for Tuesday, but we might get him back for the weekend (vs. Detroit, vs. Ottawa). The ones on top you can sometimes play through.”
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney will not be in the lineup tonight. It will be tomorrow or Thursday for sure.
- Ian Walker via twitter: Ryan Kesler will be in the lineup from the Canucks tomorrow.
- NHL.com: Evgeni Malkin did not travel with the Penguins on their 2 game road trip as he has soreness in his surgically repaired right knee. He’ll be re-evaluated before Thursday’s game.
- Brian Hedger via twitter: Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa is questionable for tomorrow night against Phoenix. He will make the trip with the team.
- Joe McDonald of ESPN: Bruins forward David Krejci did not practice today due to his ‘core injury.’ Defensemen Adam McQuaid and Steven Kampfer practiced.
- Joe Haggery via twitter: Bruins coach Claude Julien said that Krejci is doubtful for tomorrow’s game.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Rick DiPietro skated before Islanders practice this morning. Coach Jack Capuano didn’t rule him out for their Florida trip. Andrew MacDonald, Milan Jurcina and Nino Niederreiter didn’t practice today.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Senators goalie Craig Anderson is not at practice for personal reasons. He is expected back tomorrow. Sergei Gonchar is day-to-day with a bruised ankle. Bobby Butler may go on the IR with a groin injury.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Kings forward Dustin Penner left practice after 20 minutes.
- Dave Molinari via twitter: Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy has concussion like symptoms according to coach Dan Bylsma.
- David Pollak via twitter: Sharks forward Martin Havlat won’t talk to doctors until Wednesday for clearance, but McLellan expects him to be in the lineup on Friday.
- Kevin Allen via twitter: Blues forward Andy McDonald has been put on the IR with another concussion.
- Brian McNally of the Examiner: Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth only lasted 20 minutes at practice today. Neuvirth has been battling a right foot injury. “It’s big bruise and trying to ice it,” Neuvirth said. “It’s a lot of pain when I’m putting my skates on, and that’s the worst. I can’t really push on the ice or anything like that. I feel a lot of pain right now.” Lines at practice: Ovechkin-Backstrom-Brouwer, Semin-Johansson-Knuble, Chimera-Laich-Ward, Hendricks-Perreault-Halpern.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: (answering some of my questions) Malamud would be surprised if Vladimir Tarasenko doesn’t leave the KHL to join the Blues next year, but you can’t rule out the SKA’s “fleet of cash trucks.” Alexander Radulov wants to play for SKA. If he doesn’t get traded/extended during the season, it will be an interested summer for him. He’s attracted to “Money, big city, glamour, the works” that SKA can offer.
Smith gets pre-season plus 5 games … Radulov leaves KHL team … Bruins after Whitney … Sharp skates … Staios signs with Isles

- Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: Chesnokov reported this morning that Alexander Radulov was unhappy with the coaches and management of Salavat Yulaev. He posted on twitter to Evgeni Malkin that translates to:
“Mal [addressing Malkin], the coach is [getting on my nerves — the real word used is not for this blog], I am asking for a trade.”
Radulov later deleted the tweet, but screen shots were captured and can be seen at the above link. Radulov isn’t on Salavat’s roster today. One person told Chesnokov that the chances of Radulov heading back to the NHL this season increased from 5% to 10%.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: From RIAN news agency, Radulov ”packed up his stuff and left Salavat after this morning’s practice.” Slava Malamud via twitter: It’s not a secret that Radulov wants to play with SKA St. Petersburg. If he ends up there, the odds of him returning to the NHL deminish. Vtiyaz may be trying to acquire Radulov, but it is unlikely. Chesnokov says that some of the Radulov speculations are ridiculous, and that he’ll most likely end up with SKA. KHL/Medvedev won’t let him go. Malamud says that Radulov isn’t heading to the Predators this year, and nobody knows about next year, not even Radulov.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: “Lingering chatter” that the Bruins could be going after Ray Whitney and his $3 million price tag.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp is skating with teammates today, first time since his emergency appendectomy.

- Greg Brady via twitter: Spoke to an Atlanta Thrashers player via text message. He’s been told to expect a major announcement regarding franchise relocation…” … “With Phoenix seemingly settled, he said he’d been told 2 weeks ago “expect to move, but nothing official before end of Cup Finals” … “Going to stress – NOTHING is pending. Player’s been told “be ready for the team to move” & for it to “be announced sooner not later”

Sharks hopeful for Clowe … Hejduk re-signs … Weber “It’s going to get done” … Goalie carousel to stop in Philly?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on May 12th, 2011
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Ryane Clowe did not practice yesterday due to his ‘upper-body injury’ but coach Todd McLellan is hopeful that he can play tonight. He’ll skate this morning, and if he can play, he’ll be in the lineup.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Milan Hejduk re-signed with the Avalanche for 1 year and $2.6 million. He can reach $3 million with performance bonuses.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators fans will sleep better now,
“It’s going to get done,” Weber said Wednesday as players packed up to depart for the offseason. “Obviously, this is a place I love to play, and you saw how close we were this year to getting to the conference finals, and possibly further. This is a place I want to be, and it’s going to be a matter of time before something gets done.”
“They definitely want to wrap it up before July 1, and we would also, if all things were equal,” Poile said during a season-ending press conference. “Will we be able to sign Shea Weber? The answer is yes.”
The pending RFA is coming off a 3 year, $13.5 million deal. Weber would like the Preds to add some offense, but the free agent market isn’t strong. Bringing Alex Radulov could be option, GM David Poile still talks with Radulov’s agent, but it’s up to the him to he wants to come back.
Said Poile: “What Paul said to him today was very simply, ‘You made lots of money. Is money an issue? You’re the leading scorer in the league, your team won a championship. You think you’re one of the best players in the world. Are you going to come over to the best league and show that? Or are you going to stay in a secondary league.’ ”
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers GM Paul holmgren says that Chris Pronger will have back surgery today on his herniated disc. His surgery has a 95% success rate, and is similar to what Michael Leighton underwent last October. Mike Richards had his wrist surgery and has 4 weeks of rehab. Blair Betts’ rehab for his left pinky finger is 4 weeks as well. Leighton had successful surgery repairing a torn labrum. Andrej Meszaros had surgery to repair torn cartilage and a torn ligament in his wrist.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers chairman Ed Snider made it clear yesterday that the Flyers goaltending carousel will stop.
“So either one of the goalies we have has to step up in training camp, or we have to make improvements to make sure it happens. But we are never going to go through the goalie issues we’ve gone through in the last couple of years.”
The Flyers are close to the cap so adding a free agent goalie could be difficult but Snider added,
“If we trade or go for a goalie [through free agency], we’ll make it work,” he said. “We can make anything work, even with the cap.” Snider did say that Sergei Bobrovsky is the “goalie of the future.”
- Jeff Klein of hte NY Times: August 1st marks the day that Nassau County residents will vote to approve or reject a $400 million bond issue to build a new arena. $350 million would go towards the arena and $50 million towards a minor league baseball stadium.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Free agent Jason Arnott has said he’d like to remain in Capitals, but will they want to re-sign him? 3 of the last 4 seasons the Capitals have brought in veteran leadership at the trade deadline, but it’s possible the team thinks their younger players should step up.
Status of Franzen still in question … Preds-Weber want to complete negotiations befor July 1st … Radulov has an out clause … Habs to sign Yemelin
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 11th, 2011

When GM Pierre Gauthier returns from the World Championships next week, he’s expected to finalize a deal. Yemelin is NHL ready and should be a starting 6 defenseman in Montreal next season. Eric Engles via twitter: If Emelin does sign with the Canadiens, it will likely spell the end of Roman Hamrlik in a Canadiens uniform.
Heika looks at what Richards may be considering in Dallas … Kaberle-Bruins to talk after season … Weber’s worth … more FA and injury notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on March 2nd, 2011
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika on Brad Richards,
I think you’re right in a lot of ways. I think what he would like to know is what level of commitment to winning will come from the new ownership. He wants a team committed to chasing a Stanley Cup and paying the money it takes to get that done. He does not want to be on a team where getting out of the first round of the playoffs is seen as a huge accomplishment. And, if you look at the past five or six seasons, that’s what the Stars are right now. If an owner is in place and states he wants to spend money and try to win now, then I think Richards is in. If a new owner talks about budgets and setting a low payroll in hopes of business success, I think he is out.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said he spoke briefly to Kaberle’s agent the day after they traded for him, and they agreed to not to talk about an extension till after the season. “It was in a very postive light,’’ said Chiarelli, “and I am very optimistic.’’ Dupont thinks it would be a 3 or 4 year deal in the $4-4.5 million range.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Mirtle thinks at this moment that the Maple Leafs and Clarke MacArthur will eventually get a deal done for the RFA, likely at the 11th hour, and closer to Burke’s number than agent’s Don Meehan’s.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Duncan Keith has a $5.5 million salary cap hit, Brent Seabrook is at $5.8 million. Shea Weber’s should be in the same ballpark.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexander Radulov said “never say never” about a North American return, and added, “From time to time I get offers [from the NHL], but they’re more like hints. B/c it’s pointless now that I’m under contract.”
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators have had preliminary discussions with Craig Anderson who will be a UFA at the end of the season. Serious negotiations likely won’t start till later in the season when the Sens have a better idea of what they have in Anderson.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Marc Staal and Ruslan Fedotenko remain out of the lineup for the Rangers.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Jonas Hiller is still experiencing vertigo symptoms and he didn’t make it through the entire practice yesterday.
“It’s still not the way I want to,” he said. “I still have the symptoms and I still don’t feel right. It still feels like I’ve got something slowing me down and it seems like I’m always behind the play. It doesn’t hurt or anything, but it’s definitely not a nice feeling.”
Hiller didn’t consider it a setback but said that “it’s definitely (taking) longer than I thought and longer than I wanted to.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle on his injury that kept him out of last night’s game, “You know I can’t discuss what it is, but obviously I’m not going,” Ian White wouldn’t mind re-signing with the Sharks, “Without question,” White said. “How could you not want to play on one of the top teams every year and have a good shot at winning?”
Alexander Radulov burning more bridges in Nashville?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on October 23rd, 2010
- Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: On Thursday, Alexander Radulov signed a contract extension with the Salavat Yulaef of the KHL. Initially it was reported that it was 3 year deal, but apparently it’s a 2 year extension, he’s under contract this year. Where it gets interesting is that the deal was done in August, but only came out the other day. It’s been reported that Radulov would like to return to the NHL at some point. His agent has said that he wouldn’t return until a new CBA is signed.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Cooper talked to Nashville Predators GM David Poille about the Radulov contact and the secrecy behind it.
“His agent was here last week. Every time we talk, we talk about it. He had heard the same thing, though he doesn’t do Radulov’s Russian contract. Rad said to him, basically, he didn’t say yes or no, basically he said he could get out of the deal. But that’s what he said about the current deal. When he asked him about the extension, Rad didn’t confirm it, but he said, ‘whatever I do, I can get out of.’ That’s what he said when he signed the three-year deal, that he could get out of it from year-to-year.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexander Radulov’s current contract and extension does not contain an out clause according to Salavat’s GM.
More on Brad Richards … Radulov signing KHL extension? NHL attendance
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 22nd, 2010
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika answers questions from readers. Asked if signing Brad Richards to a contract extension could help entice a new owner. Heika thinks it’s possible and that they have already considered it, but it would be tough to put together as it would involve Richards, the team, the lenders and the NHL. Richards does have a no trade, therefore controls his destiny before he becomes a UFA on July 1st. If the team is struggling in February, Heika thinks he would consider waiving it to move to a contender. He later goes on to say that a contract extension for Richards before the end of the season is unlikely. Heika doesn’t think the Stars would be interested in Sheldon Souray if he’s put on re-entry waivers, he has another year left after this year, and it may be better for the organization to rid out the young kids.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: There are reports that Alexander Radulov signed a 3 year contract extension with the KHL’s Salavat Yulaef.
- David Johnson (Hockey Analysis) via twitter: Last night’s attendance in Phoenix was 6,706. Last season there were 19 games where the announced attendance was under 10,000, with 11 being in Phoenix. 5,580 was the lowest attendance last season, but low number may have been a result of snow storm.
