Afternoon Amusement: Some bad/funny player buyouts that likely won’t happen
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on November 18th, 2011
For your Friday afternoon amusement (or any other day that you happened to stumble across this post), I’ve put together some player ‘buyouts’. Some are because their contract could be bad (like a Scott Gomez) or funny due to the length/amount of the buyout (like an Ilya Kovalchuk).
Now, most of these likely would never happen, much to the chagrin of some, but it should be worth a good laugh. The magical powers of Capgeek.com made this entry possible. (Buyout numbers are based the next buyout period of June 15th 2012. A team could bury a player in the minors during the season, and buy them out afterwards.)
* The numbers listed beside the players name is what the buyout would be and the length of the buyout. The numbers listed beside the years are the Cap hits that would be applied to the team.

Leiweke talks Doughty … Homophobic slur towards Avery, who could be sent to the AHL … Yashin signs with CSKA … Sabres get cap space
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 27th, 2011
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The president of the Kings’ parent company AEG, Tim Leiweke, supports Kings GM Dean Lombardi’s stance with Drew Doughty. Leiweke said the Kings plan to spend to the cap but paying Doughty $7+ million would change the allocation of their budget and would have long-term implications.
“The difference of opinion here is that Drew may see this as disrespect, and it’s not at all. We have offered to make him the fourth-highest-paid defenseman in the NHL and equal the highest-paid King in our history. When I look at that, I think there either has to be a miscommunication or Drew’s a 21-year-old and probably hasn’t done what he may need to do here, which is stand up and take charge of the decision.”
“More importantly, tell me which player we’re now starting to carve this $300,000 or $400,000 out of. We’re carving it out of someone’s salary next year and it’s no secret we’ve got some restricted and unrestricted free agents that we have to deal with in the next two years. So who is it on this team we go look at and say, ‘We just gave Drew your extra money, because $6.8 [million] wasn’t good enough’? That’s not good for team chemistry.
“I support Dean on what he’s trying to do here. He’s not trying to be cheap. He’s not trying to be disrespectful. We love Drew. It’s an allocation issue here and everyone, including most of the players I’ve run into in the last week, they get that we are desperate to try to keep enough resources to keep this team together long term.”
Leiweke added,
“Let’s not destroy this relationship or his reputation or our reputation over something like this. We need to get this done. He needs to get back in here.
- CP in the Globe and Mail: NY Rangers forward Sean Avery told ESPN that Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds made a homophobic slur at him during Monday night’s game. Simmonds didn’t deny making the remark:
“We were going back-and-forth for the rest of the game and emotions ran high,” he said. “I don’t recall every single thing that I did say to him. He said some things to me that I didn’t like, and I guess I said some things that he didn’t like.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexei Yashin will be signing with the CSKA of the KHL later today.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres forward Ales Kotalik and defenseman Shaone Morrisonn cleared waivers yesterday and were assigned to Rochester of the AHL. It will save the team a $5.075 million cap space this season. The Sabres were unsuccessful in their attempt to trade the two. They are currently about $930,000 below the cap. 14 other players were sent to Rochester: forwards Zack Kassian, Marcus Foligno, Corey Tropp Jonathan Parker, Michael Ryan, Colin Stuart, Phil Varone and Derek Whitmore; defensemen T.J. Brennan, Brayden McNabb Dennis Persson, Joe Finley and Drew Schiestel. and goaltender Drew MacIntyre.
- Chris Botta of the NY Times: If Sean Avery doesn’t impress Rangers management, he could find himself on waivers and sent to the AHL.
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs still have 9 defenseman in camp, battling for the 6 starting positions. In camp remain: Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aulie (on a two-way), Luke Schenn, John-Michael Liles, Cody Franson, Mike Komisarek, Carl Gunnarsson (could be on the bubble), Jake Gardiner (can also be sent to minors without going on waivers), and Matt Lashoff (long shot).
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Yesterday at practice the the Blackhawks tried Patrick Kane at center between Marian Hossa and Andrew Brunette. “I don’t know, (we’ll) try it for a couple of games and see how it goes. It’s preseason, so why not? I’m willing to try it out, I guess. I’m going to try to do my best there and see what happens.” Kane said.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said that forward Jan Mursak has a broken left ankle and will be out around 3 months. There are several non-displaced fractures and some stretched ligaments. Fabian Brunnstrom or Ryan Johnson could benefit from the injury.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Sam Gagner had an MRI done to determine if he has a high ankle sprain. Results not know yet.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: The Senators will trim their camp roster to 25-27 players. Likely to be sent to the AHL are “goalies Mike McKenna, Brian Stewart, and Robin Lehner; defencemen Tim Conboy, Bob Raymond, Josh Godfrey, Craig Schira, Patrick Wiercioch, Mark Borowiecki, and Eric Gryba; and forwards Mike Hoffman, David Dziurzynski, Derek Grant, Corey Cowick, Corey Locke, Mark Parrish, Darren Kramer, Jim O’Brien, Patrick Cannone, Francis Lessard, Wacey Hamilton, Jack Downing, Maxime Gratchev, Louie Caporusso, and possibly Andre Petersson.”
Re-alignment talk … Stars want to talk extension with Benn … CBA topics … Campoli could be a Rangers option … Coyotes were ’10 minutes’ from being Jets
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on September 24th, 2011
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: From the Board of Governors realignment talk, they prefer the 6 divisions compared to the 4 divisions. 15 alternatives were proposed, and they will narrow it down to 2 or 3 by their December meetings. The Dallas Stars would like to move out of the Pacific division to the Central or Southeast. One of the alternatives presented was to have the Toronto and Winnipeg move to the Northwest with Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Detroit would replace Toronto in the Northeast. LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi made a call to Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein to pick his brain on how they were able to re-sign Dustin Pedroia at good price when others were telling him he could make more. The Sharks have 10 players in camp battling for 3 spots on their bottom 6. “The Sharks like to give players within their organization a shot at jobs, but they’re also trying to win the Stanley Cup. If they don’t like the production from their bottom six early in the season, don’t be surprised if GM Doug Wilson works the phone to acquire more experience.” The Stars contacted Jamie Benn’s agent to gauge their interest in talking contract extension.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: During the next CBA talks “Escrow, capping the length of long-term contracts, Olympic participation for NHL players, revenue sharing and reworking the salary cap floor” will likely be debated. The league may add guaranteed contracts to the discussion as a negotiating ploy. Lowering the salary cap floor so that small market teams wouldn’t lose as much money could be an option. The Cap ceiling would be higher, but this scenario may create a loss of parity across the league.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: A league executive on Drew Doughty and the LA Kings: “I just don’t think this will get settled soon.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Campoli could become an option for the NY Rangers depending on Marc Staal’s health status. The Rangers did inquire about Campoli shortly after the Blackhawks walked away from the arbitration ruling, but have haven’t talked to his agent since. Campoli has received calls from some teams.
“Chris is in a situation where he’s looking for a spot where he can grow with an organization, unlike a number of veterans who are on the market,” Evans said. “I don’t know if there’s a perception out there that he’s too expensive because of the $2.5 million, but that was just a salary arbitration number.
“We haven’t really gotten into a price point [discussion] with anybody.”
- Roy MacGregor of the Globe and Mail: In May of 2010, the Coyotes came within “10 minutes” of becoming the Jets. Mark Chipman of True North was in the NHL New York offices awaiting for the 5 pm deadline, but the City of Glendale decided to give the team $25 million in funds to keep the team. Gary Bettman made it be known to Chipman that they would receive the next NHL team, but it may not be the Coyotes.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars have cut their training camp roster down to 45. Jack Campbell and Jamie Oleksiak were sent back to junior.
- Tim Sassone via twitter: The Blackhawks sent 11 players to the AHL yesterday: David Toews, Lalonde, Bollig, DiDomenico, Froese, Gilbert, Shaw, Zanette, Danis-Pepin, Stanton, Youds. They are down to 41 in camp: 25 forwards, 12 defensemen and 4 goalies.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Alexei Yashin passed his CSKA physical, now ownership has to decide if they want to sign him.
Kings want to avoid 5 year deal with Doughty … Flyers again deny why they Carter and Richards … Byfuglien charged … Crosby video
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on September 21st, 2011
- Helene Elliot of the LA Times: Kings GM Dean Lombardi said again that “there’s no way” he’s trading Drew Doughty. Doughty remains in London, Ontario after rejecting offers in the 6 to 9 year range. The Kings want avoid a 5 year deal (which would be a reasonable compr0mise) as they want to avoid having Doughty and Anze Kopitar a UFA at the same time.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren denies that he traded Mike Richards and Jeff Carter during the offseason due to off-ice issues.
“That (off-ice behavior) had nothing to do with it, nothing to do it,” said Holmgren, the Flyers general manager. “They were young guys with a lot of money who enjoyed their life. And a lot was made of that. And why wouldn’t they? Wouldn’t you?
“A lot of has been said about this, too much really. There have been all kinds of stuff out there, and it’s untrue. Because they were quiet kids and weren’t good with the media, I think some of that came back to them. I think they paid for that. I don’t think it’s been fair. I think the world of both those kids. They gave their hearts and souls to our team.”
- Paul Walsh of the Star-Tribune: Dustin Byfuglien has been charged with boating while intoxicated. His blood alcohol level was 0.031%, with the legal limit 0.08%. Byfuglien was subject to drug-recognition testing and it was determined he was “under the influence of a controlled substance.” He told police that he takes supplements from “16 or 17″ bottles but could not recall the names of them. Byfuglien was charged with gross-misdemeanor refusal to submit to blood or alcohol testing, boating while intoxicated, no navigational lights illuminated and insufficient number of personal flotation devices available. The charges may give him trouble entering Canada.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mark Cuban no longer has interest in buying the Dallas Stars. Doug Miller of Allen Americans may have interest in offering more than Tom Gaglardi’s $267 million offer to buy the team. Local sports entrepreneur Chuck Greenberg said on Monday that he’s interested in the team.
- Arthur Staple of Newsday: The Islanders will announce a new captain today and it could be defenseman Mark Streit.
- Szymon Szemberg via twitter: Russian media is reporting that Alexei Yashin is about to sign with CSKA Moscow of the KHL. Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Despite some reports, Vityaz did not offer Yashin a 1 year, $1 million deal.
- Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail: The job appears to be open for Mikael Backlund and he just needs to pick up where he left off last season. The top line job between Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay is his for the taking. Other centers on their depth chart are Brendan Morrison, Matt Stajan and Olli Jokinen.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Re-alignment was discussed “at length” by the Board of Governors. Darren Dreger via twitter: Expect a decision on NHL re-alignment during the December Board of Governors meetings. Greg Brady via twitter: There are lots of options for re-alignment, including 3 conferences of 10 teams.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues goalie Brian Elliott and Ben Bishop will battle to backup Jaroslav Halak. Both signed the same contract, $600,000 in the NHL and $105,000 in the AHL. Halak is projected to start 60 games this year.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators tough guy Francis Lessard got a talking to from Matt Carkner and coach Paul MacLean after he took a blindsided run at Nikita Filatov during a scrimmage. “To be fair to Francis, he’s here to show the coach what he can do for the team,” said MacLean.
Sabres looking to make trades, could have trouble in new CBA … Possible lines for Rangers … Who plays with E. Staal? Markov has knee drained
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 16th, 2011
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Sabres are still about $3.6 million over the salary cap ceiling, and will be actively looking to make trades before their Oct. 7th season opener.
- Mike Harrington via twitter: After signing Tyler Myers to the 7 year, $38.5 million contract extension, Harrington thinks that Sabres must be thinking the salary cap is going up to the $68-70 million range next year. They will now start working on Tyler Ennis.
- Bob McKenznie via twitter: Wouldn’t be surprised if during the next CBA that the NHL tries to get each year of a contract the same. The player would receive their cap hit each year. Greg Wyshynski via twitter: “I applaud creative accounting like Buffalo’s this summer. Until next CBA adjusts the calculation of the cap, go bananas, GMs not named Lou.”
- Katie Strang via twitter: Alexei Yashin said he won’t be attending the Islanders training camp.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers winger Wojtek Wolski will likely be given a shot to be on a line with Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. If that doesn’t work out, Tortorella could move Brandon Dubinsky to the left wing on the top line. Brooks wonders is Sean Avery can earn a significant role with the Rangers, but if not, then what? Lines could look like: Wolski-Richards-Gaborik; Dubinsky-Artem Anisimov-Ryan Callahan; Ruslan Fedotenko-Derek Stepan-Zuccarello (his spot to lose); Michael Rupp-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust. Defense pairings could look like: “Marc Staal-Dan Girardi; McDonagh-Sauer (if healthy); a third pair with Erixon, Steve Eminger, Del Zotto and Pavel Valentenko in the mix.”
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Who plays with Hurricanes all-star Eric Staal is up in the air after the departures of Eric Cole and Cory Stillman. Jeff Skinner’s name has come up in talks for the left side, but Alexei Ponikarovsky may get the first look. Jussi Jokinen, Anthony Stewart and Zac Dalpe are names being mentioned for the right side.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks winger Martin Havlat is listed as day-to-day as he’s still recovering from shoulder surgery that he had last May. Antti Niemi had a cyst removed and may miss the first day of camp. Antero Niittymaki is heading to see a specialist for a groin-related problem, he missed 17 games last year.
“We’ve exhausted all the conservative therapy that we’ve had with him,” Wilson said. “There’s a procedure that can get him pain-free so we’re supportive of that. If that procedure takes place, he’ll be out for probably 12 weeks or so.”
Sharks prospects Tony Lucia and James Marcou are still dealing with post-concussion symptoms and won’t be at camp. Nick Petrecki and Frazer McLaren are day-to-day as they recover from off-season hip procedures. James Sheppard will be out for another 2 months as he recovers from knee surgery.
- Kevin Mio of Hockey Insider/Out: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov suffered a setback a couple weeks ago. He had his knee drained of water, and it will take some time to rehab it again. Tony Marinaro said on Team 990 that the problem developed from training too hard. Former NHLer Enrico Ciccone doubted Markov would be ready for the season opener.
Doughty rejects $61.2 million … Nothing new on Marchand talks … Parise and Devils will work on long term deal … Tavares commited to Islanders
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 9th, 2011
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty rejected multiple offers including a 9 year, $61.2 million contract. The $6.8 million salary cap hit would have been the same as Anze Kopitar. Dennis Bernstein via twiter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi is facing the reality that he may have to do a 5 year deal with Doughty (a la Stamkos) to get him signed and risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent at 27 years old. Doughty wants a shorter term and to be a UFA at 27. The Kings may have to do a 5 year, $35 million deal. Helene Elliott via twitter: Lombardi and Doughty’s agent, Don Meehan, have agreed to not discuss negotiations publicly, no deal appears imminent.
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: There is “nothing new” according to Brad Marchand on contract updates. “You know what, it’s how it goes sometimes and it’s been a long summer. I’m anxious to get something done.” He is still hoping to get a deal done by the start of training camp. Marchand’s agent, Wade Arnott, was the agent for Phil Kessel when he was with the Bruins. Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Neither side is wanting a holdout. Marchand is projected as the left winger on the 2nd line with Bergeron at center. If there is a holdout, there are plenty of players vying for the open spot. Zach Hamill is a natural center but may have to move to the wing. Ryan Spooner and Jared Knight could be in the mix but are more likely heading back to junior. Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: See the video at bottom of the entry.
- Dave Lozo via twitter: Devils winger Zach Parise said that both sides will keep talking about a getting long term deal done before the end of the season.
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: Islanders center John Tavares told ESPN that he’s committed to the Islanders.
“In terms of my contract being up this year, I don’t have any plans on leaving or what could happen,” Tavares said. “I’m committed to Long Island and the Islanders. They’ve been great to me. We have a great bunch of guys and I’d love to be a part of turning this around from where it was and bringing us back to credibility, respectability and being a team that’s constantly in the playoffs and competing for the Stanley Cup.”
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers RFA forward Shawn Matthias still remains without a contract, but he’s been working out with teammates. He’s been tendered a contract, so he is still property of the Panthers. The Panthers are offering a 2-way contract due to the competition at the forward position. “Yeah, I hoped it would have been done quicker,” he said. “I trust my agents, they are working on it. That’s what you have to have, trust in them. I really don’t know what’s going on. I’m staying out of it.”
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger won’t be ready for the start of training camp, but he’s making strides.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: If the Blues don’t name a captain and instead go with only assistants, it’s because they see Alex Pietrangelo as their future captain.
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: Alexei Yashin has said that he’s ready to return to Yaroslavl.
- Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have signed cener Kyle Wellwood to a 1 year deal worth $700,000.
KHL’s Lokomotiv plane crashes … Bolland considers himself lucky … Vokoun had similar offer from the Red Wings … Alfredsson skating … Boogaard’s battle
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 7th, 2011
12:29 pm:
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Reports are that Alexander Galimov may still be alive. (I’m not going to make any more notes on him for the time being, many mixed reports)
11:51 am:
- Sean Leahy via twitter: KHL Statement:
“We are only beginning to understand the impact of this tragedy affecting the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl club and the international hockey community. First and foremost, our condolences go out to the families and friends of the players, coaches and staff lost in today’s tragedy. “We know that there are many in the KHL family who will be grieving with us. As the investigation of this tragedy progresses we will work closely with investigators, government officials, club executives and the Yaroslavl community. We are working to find an appropriate way to honor this club and begin the healing process from the deep loss so many of us feel today. “We are aware that many of you have questions. This tragedy remains our primary focus. We ask for patience as we find an appropriate way to proceed with the 2011/2012 season. We will continue to communicate our plans as they take shape.”
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Viktor Tikhonov suggests that every KHL team send at least one player to Lokomotiv so that the team can continue this season.
- BD Gallof via twitter: Gallof provided a link to a wikipedia page about the crash that is being updated.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Reports coming in that Alexander Galimov, who originally survived the crash, has passed away.
10:48 am:
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Belarusian news agencies are saying that Ruslan Salei was on the plane.
10:30 am:
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: 45 people including crew may have been on board. The only player to survive may be Alexander Galimov.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: It’s being reported that Ruslan Salei was awating the team in Minsk.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: There is at least one report that Salei was on the plane.
9:30 am:
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: A charter plane carrying Lokomotiv of the KHL has crashed. Reports are that there were 37 people on board. The number of people that died is unconfirmed (reports saying 36 died). Former NHLers on the team include Vasyunov, Rachunek, Demitra, Salei, Skrastins. Brad McCrimmon was the teams head coach. A link to Lokomotiv’s roster or here if the site is down.. Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: “Officials of Russia Aviation confirm 34 dies in plane crash.”
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland considers himself lucky with the concussion he sustained last March. He missed the last 14 regular season games and the first 3 of the playoffs. He’ll be ready to go for training camp.
“It does get scary. If you look at Sidney Crosby right now, he’s still out. It’s never fun seeing another player out and a star player out of the lineup.
“It is scary how long these things can take. I remember I was sitting there with mine and you never knew when it was going to come out. I would have dinner with friends and it would be like they were talking to a wall.”
Chris Campoli still remains unsigned. The Ottawa Sun reported a while ago that 5 teams were interested. Jordan Hendry will be on a tryout with Minnesota.
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun said that Detroit offered him a deal similar to the one he received from the Capitals, 1 year at $1.5 million.
“Looking at Washington’s lineup compared to Detroit, they are comparable teams,” Vokoun said. “But Detroit in last 10 years won three times Stanley Cup. And Washington never won it. But that’s a lot better challenge for me and the team, to be able to do something special.”
and later added
“My belief is this team has a better chance to win than Detroit does. And they showed a lot more interest, so that was the key for me, too.”
- Katie Strang of Newsday: Alexei Yashin skated at the Islanders practice facility yesterday but it remains “unlikely” that he re-signs with the team.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson skated yesterday for 70 minutes, taking part in every drill and full scrimmage. Alfredsson only played in 54 games last year and had surgery this summer.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Russo writes a very good piece about Derek Boogaard and his battle with painkillers. You should read it rather than me summarizing parts of it.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland considers himself lucky with the concussion he sustained last March. He missed the last 14 regular season games and the first 3 of the playoffs. He’ll be ready to go for training camp.
Kings refine Doughty offer … GMs may not like van Riemsdyk deal … Lombardi free of concussion symptoms … Dent in Stanley Cup (video)
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on August 31st, 2011
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The LA Kings have refined some of the concepts in their offer to RFA Drew Doughty, and added some choices for length of contract, likely 6 to 8 years.
“Everything’s been amicable. We’re waiting to hear back from them. They said they’d get back to us in a day or two,” Lombardi said. “So in terms of distance, I’ll probably have a better handle on that when we hear back.”
The Kings also filed their grievance over the Colin Fraser trade with the Oilers, with the Oilers having a few days to respond. Bettman will late decide if they need to hold a hearing or not.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: GM’s of other teams may not be too thrilled with the 6 year $25.5 million contract the Flyers gave James van Riemsdyk yesterday. Teams will now have to deal with van Riemsdyk comparables when trying to sign some of their young guys. If Taylor Hall gets 55 points this year, do the Oilers have to give him $5 million in a 6 year deal? Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi could be in a similar situation.
- John Buccigross via twitter: James van Riemsdyk salary breakdown: 2012-13 $2.5 million, 2013-14 $3.75 million, 2014-15 $4.5 million, 2015-16 $4.75 million, 2016-17 $5 million, and 2017-18 $5 million.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Maple Leafs forward Matthew Lombardi has been declared free of concussion symptoms but he still could miss the start of training camp according to GM Brian Burke.
“He is cleared for full activity on the bike,” Burke said in a phone interview. “The last report I got he was doing 20-plus minutes without symptoms. He has been declared symptom-free and now it’s about getting the workload back up.”
Burke also added that “Right now, I’ve got nothing going,” and “This is the group we’re likely to head in with.” Luke Schenn’s agent said that he expects to meet with the Leafs later this week and Burke said “We remain optimistic that we’ll sign him before camp.”
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: 39 year old Mike Knuble signed a 1 year deal with the Capitals but wants to sign an extension.
“I’m out there playing for another deal,” he said. “I’m not riding off into the sunset. I want to make that point clear to everybody. This is no farewell song.”
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: After missing last season with a concussion, Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador is symptom free and has suffered no setbacks during/after “full tilt” workouts.
“I’m back in full training, full everything, so I’m excited for the season,” he said today.
“There’s really no concern about my long-term health, actually,” he said. “The doctors have already put me through a lot of those tests, so I’m pretty excited about that. If I get hurt, I get hurt. That’s just the game. I’m in a good situation where I don’t have to be concerned about a lot of things.”
- Katie Strang via twitter: Sources are saying that the Islanders re-signing Alexei Yashin are “unlikely.”
- Katie Strang via twitter: The Islanders have shown interest in winger Sergei Samsonov but it sounds like he’s looking for a deal and not a tryout.
- Damian Cristodero via twitter: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is planning on having Ryan Malone play the final 2 preseason games and havgin him ready to go for the start of the regular season.
- Michael Ryder’s day with the Stanley Cup leaves it with a nice dent. (The guy with the white gloves should have been there to catch it)
Bradley has some words about Semin … Doughty – Kings haven’t talked in weeks … Nylander gets Flyers PTO … Yashin has KHL offer … Redden “unaffordable”
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 18th, 2011
- ESPN: Former Capital, and current Florida Panthers forward Matt Bradley had some words to say about Alexander Semin and lack of playoff success in Washington on an Ottawa radio station.
“I don’t mind saying Alexander Semin’s name, because he’s one guy who has so much talent, he could easily be the best player in the league, and just for whatever reason, just doesn’t care,” Bradley said on Ottawa’s TEAM 1200 radio show.
“When you’ve got a guy like that, you need him to be your best player, or one of your best players, and when he doesn’t show up, you almost get the sense that he wants to be back in Russia.”
“We had some guys who didn’t show up in the playoffs,” Bradley said on the show.
“I think our locker room was maybe a little bit too nonchalant, and guys weren’t disciplined the way they should have been. Those two things are big things. It wasn’t that guys were going out the night before a game, but not being ready to practice or missing practice with questionable injuries and not being focused.”
“I mean, there were a lot of guys who played well that didn’t probably play as much as they needed to, but I love Bruce [Boudreau] and Bruce is a great coach and he was in a very tough position there, because in Washington our top guys are definitely the stars and the guys that people want to see on the ice, so I totally understand,” Bradley said. “That just doesn’t happen on our team, it happens on a lot of teams.
“When you’re paying your top guys a lot of money and those guys carry you through the whole season, and if one of them isn’t going, it’s very hard not to play them, and I understand that that’s tough. But I think in the end, if you want to win, sometimes you have to sit some of those guys down and maybe send a message and try to get them going.”
Bradley had only good things to say about Alex Ovechkin: “I never worry about Ovi,” he said. “He’s an all-in guy. He’s young, he makes his mistakes, the same as anyone would. I often try to put myself in his position. And you’ve got to remember, he’s 25 years old, he’s got a guaranteed $120 million, he’s on top of the world, and he still for the most part makes the right decisions.”
- Greg Wyshynski via twitter: Wyshynski talked spoke to Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau about Bradley’s comments about how he overplays his stars: “Oh yeah? Oh well … it’s his opinion.” and he wouldn’t give further comment after that.
- EJ Hradek via twitter: According to one source, the LA Kings and Drew Doughty haven’t talked in weeks.
- Philadelphia Daily News: Michael Nylander will be at the Flyers training camp on a tryout. Nylander last played in 2008-09 with the Capitals.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: KHL’s Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg have made an offer to Alexei Yashin and are awaiting an answer.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins forward Dustin Jeffrey has been cleared for light skating following his knee surgery.
- Steve Zipay via twitter: Zipay says that Wade Redden is “unaffordable” for the Rangers this year. (I wonder how many teams would be interested in him if he didn’t carry a $6.5 million cap hit for 3 more years? I’m sure he’d get some interest.)
- Marc Antoine Godin of Cyberpresse.ca: Canadiens forward Lars Eller, who had surgery on his dislocated right shoulder, will be at training camp, but
“There is no set date for my return, but it is possible that I am ready for the first game of the season.
I could also miss the first week of the calendar. The doctors will evaluate it during training camp.”
“Certainly I will be there from the start of camp. I will participate in some exercises, but I must take things as they come.”
- Mike Brophy of Sportsnet.ca: Brophy lists some coaches who could be on the hotseat this year: Ron Wilson (TOR), Todd McLellan (SJ), Alain Vigneault (VAN), and Terry Murray (LA).
Rypien didn’t have alcohol/drug issues … Alfie skates … Nothing new on Yashin … Hiller hopes to be ready for camp … Jackets and Flames notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 17th, 2011
- Jason Botchford via twitter: Canucks GM Mike Gillis said that when he was with the Canucks, Rick Rypien’s issues were never alcohol or drug related and that he was even reluctant to take anything prescribed.
- Rob Brodie of OttawaSenators.com: Daniel Alfredsson skated yesterday for the 1st times since having back surgery in June.
“It felt good to be back on the ice today,” he said afterward. “I was on for maybe an hour, an hour and 20 (minutes), did some drills and played a little bit of a scrimmage. It was fun. I was tired, but everything held up well and the back felt fine.”
Alfredsson hasn’t played in a game since February 7th. He hopes to be ready for the start of training camp in September. He’ll be back out skating on Thursday.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Chesnokov spoke with Alexei Yashin’s agent and said there is nothing new to report on negotiations.
- James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk: Jonas Hiller hopes to be ready to the start of training camp.
“Of course I know I still have to get some ice-training and I have to work hard towards it. But that is something that you do every year. And for that I am here in Switzerland. This is what I’m working towards. And then, I believe, that I’m going to be ready come training camp and the season. And the All-Star game is certainly a goal again.”
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Antti Mietinen (Wild) has finally signed with AK Bars Kazan of the KHL.
- Tom Reed via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson likes to award contract extensions to players leading up to the season. Think Antoine Vermette, Derek Dorsett, and Steve Mason. (He mentions Rostislav Klesla, but he was traded to Phoenix last year).
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM on Daymond Langkow after he missed 78 games with a fractured vertebra:
“One of the guys who has consistently been at the training sessions is Daymond,” Feaster said. “He was fully cleared at the end of the season. He’s been fully training. No restrictions whatsoever
“He’s ready to go when camp opens.”
Feaster on Brendan Morrison who had surgery in April to repair a torn ACL:
“The big thing we’re going to have to do with him is to make sure he doesn’t overdo it,” Feaster said. “He’s pushing to be ready for camp, and our point to him is to follow what the doctors are telling him and make sure he’s fully healed.
“But he’s progressing very, very nicely. He’s very happy and so is the medical staff.”
Savard still has headaches … Parise update … Isles fallout after Rolston trade involving Yashin, Comeau and Komisarek
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 29th, 2011
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Bruins center Marc Savard is still complaining of headaches according to Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli. Unless things turnaround soon, it doesn’t look like he’ll be at training camp.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Zach Parise said he doesn’t know “one way or the other” if they can reach a deal before their arbitration hearing on Wednesday.
“I think it’s the same,” Parise said. “We’re working on it. We’re trying to get it figured out so we can avoid that.”
- Dan Rosen of NHL.com: After yesterday’s trade, the Devils have about $8.5 million in cap space. Parise comments on his contract:
“I’ve said all along that’s where I want to be, that’s where I want to play so I haven’t planned on anything different,” Parise told NHL.com Thursday night.
“You know what it is, it’s a pretty unique situation and I don’t know,” Parise said. “The whole time I’ve kept the negotiating pretty private, but it does start to get a little nerve-wracking at this time just because so many different things can happen and you just don’t know what direction it’s going to go right now.”
- Chris Botta via twitter: Sources are saying that the Brian Rolston trade was a prelude to another trade that the Islanders are working on. BD Gallof via twitter: About the Islanders rumored interest in Mike Komisarek, the Isles wanted him badly as a free agent. Gallof heard that he didn’t want to play for his hometown due to the added pressure. (and there are less pressures playing in Toronto?)
- Brian Compton via twitter: Compton thinks the Rolston trade should end the Yashin rumors. Andy Strickland via twitter: There is nothing imminent between Alexei Yashin and the Islanders. If they do a deal, it likely wouldn’t be until next week. Brian Compton via twitter: GM Garth Snow on Yashin: “I think I said what I had to say last week. I’m not gonna go down that avenue again.” Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Yashin’s agent thinks there is there is room for him on the Islanders. “As far as I’m concerned, it does not affect what we’re doing with the Islanders,” Gandler told Sporting News on Thursday. Agent Mark Gandler hasn’t spoken to any other NHL teams.
- Brian Compton via twitter: Garth Snow said that Mark Streit “feels great” and is “right on schedule.”
- Katie Strang of Newsday: It looks like Islanders forward Blake Comeau won’t get a deal done before their arbitration hearing next Thursday. Comeau is coming off a 24 goal, 22 assist season where he made $800,000.
- BD Gallof via twitter: Gallof sees the Isles 3rd line as Rolston, Bailey and Nino. Comeau could be used a trade bait for a defenseman.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Rolston said that he basically waived his no-trade clause in December.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: The Canucks could be interested in signing 6′ 5″ forward Brad Winchester.
