Price to start tonight … Spezza injury notes … Kuba 3-4 weeks away and more

  • Ian Walker via twitter: Andrew Peters who was acquired by the Vancouver Canucks for Shane O’Brien, will stay with the AHL Rochester American rather than report to the AHL Manitoba Moose.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Adam Mair still doesn’t have a contract with the New Jersey Devils, but continues to practice with the club. “Right now the Devils have only 11 forwards. They liked the way Mair performed during the preseason while on a tryout, but they do not have the cap space to sign him.”
  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Kirk Maltby and Derek Meech cleared waivers. Maltby will meet with Red Wings GM Ken Holland possibly today to see if he’ll retire or report to Grand Rapids. Holland hopes he’ll report.

Wednesday afternoon twitter roundup

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: All the players who were put on waivers yesterday have cleared. The Toronto Maple Leafs have put Matt Lashoff on waivers today. The Florida Panthers have put Nathan Paetsch on waivers today.
  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: The Vancouver Canucks have traded Darcy Hordichuk to the Florida Panthers for Andrew Peters.
  • Daniel Tolensky via twitter: The New York Islanders 23-man roster totals just $30.5 milion in salary. Injured players add another $5.6 million, buyouts $6 million, and bonuses $6.775 million.
  • Ryan Rishaug via twitter: The Edmonton Oilers won’t be able to trade Sheldon Souray for a roster play unless they send someone down first that doesn’t need to pass through waivers. Likely Souray is going to the AHL. Other option on the trade front is if they trade for a roster player, is to put someone on IR.
  • Frank Seravalli via twitter: Philadelphia Flyers forward Ian Laperriere could miss the entire year with post-concussion symptoms. Doctors are having hard time determining whether an eye injury or a brain injury are causing the symptoms.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Jamie Langenbrunner remains the New Jersey Devils captain. Zach Parise and Patrick Elias are the alternates.
  • Vicki Hall via twitter: Matt Stajan, Ales Kotalik, David Moss, and Ryan Stone will start the season on the Calgary Flames IR.
  • Tim Panaccio via twitter: Andreas Nodl was assigned the the AHL Phantoms. Michael Leighton probably goes on LTIR, and Nodl will be recalled.

Rangers-Fedotenko talking … Getzlaf new Ducks captain … Bernier beats out Ersberg … Morrison released

  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The New York Rangers and Ruslan Fedotenko continue to talk about a contract. 3 other teams have shown interest if he can’t get a deal worked out the Rangers.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Los Angeles Kings backup battle was won by Jonathan Bernier. Erik Ersberg didn’t get into an exhibition game after injuring his hand. He was unlikely to beat out Bernier anyways as he was in Murray’s doghouse for most of last season. Ersberg is set to make $750,000 this season, and will likely be put on waivers.
  • Ben Kuzma via twitter: Brendan Morrison was released by the Vancouver Canucks, he never received a contract offer. Morrison was asked about the possibility of retirement, adding “No, I’ll see how this year goes and make a decision. I still feel I can play. I know I can play.” Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: Morrison had a good camp, with the Calgary Flames the best bet to go after the 35-year old forward due to the amount of injuries they’ve had down the middle. Brian Burke said in an email that the Maple Leafs don’t have any interest in Morrison. The Canucks are down to 28 players after sending Victor Oreskovich, Sergei Shirokov, Yann Sauve and Bill Sweatt to the Manitoba Moose.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: The Florida Panthers goalie of the future, Jacob Markstrom was sent to the AHL by the team. Michael Grabner, Andrew Peters and Joe Callahan were released by the club, and will be sent to the AHL if they clear waivers. Grabner being put on waivers is a bit surprising since he was part of the deal that sent Keith Ballard to the Canucks.
  • Nick Kypreos: Sources are saying that Kyle Wellwood is heading to the KHL, for a 1 year deal worth over $1 million with bonuses.

Coyotes and Oilers make a deal … Souray for Brewer in the works?

  • The Edmonton Oilers have sent forward Patrick O’Sullivan to the Phoenix Coyotes for defenseman Jim Vandermeer. Both O’Sullivan ($2.925 million) and Vandermeer ($2.3 million) cleared waivers earlier today, and could still be bought out by their new clubs.
  • Bob McKenzie of TSN: There are rumors of a Sheldon Souray deal to the St. Louis Blues for Eric Brewer. Souray is a $5.4 million cap hit ($4.5 million salary this year and next), while Brewer has a cap hit of $4.25 million ($4.5 million salary this year). The Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed Ethan Moreau off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers. The Carolina Hurricanes will buy out Rod Brind’Amour and he will retire. His $3 million contract will count against the cap. Tom Preissing (Col), Jay Pandolfo (NJ), Andrew Peters (NJ), Petteri Nokelainen (Phx) and Nigel Dawes (Cgy) were placed on waivers.
