- Craig Custance of ESPN: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman would love to find a trading partner.
“There’s a lot of guys looking for players and not a lot willing to part with players,” he said during a Tuesday phone conversation. “I don’t know if it’s going to change a ton the next couple weeks.”
The Lightning and Islanders aren’t ready to be sellers just yet.
“Teams that are out of it are looking more towards the future,” Bowman said. “If that’s the case, there’s nothing you can do. Those teams are looking at the summer and going, ‘You know what? Why are we going to trade him away?’”
If the right center was made available, they would be interested despite recently acquiring Brendan Morrison. They will target defensemen. Canadiens Hal Gill would be an option.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks the Blackhawks could end up trading for Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov to become their starter.
- Corey Masisak of NHL.com: The Sharks might be looking for a 3rd line energy guy who can kill penalties. They could deal Antero Niittymaki, but they won’t get much return for him. The Kings will be looking to add scoring. They have Jonathan Bernier to trade, but they’ll want a big return for him. The Coyotes could use some scoring up front. If they become sellers, they have Ray Whitney and Daymond Langkow to move. If the Stars are buyers, they could use a top 6 forward. If they become sellers they may look to move Nicklas Grossman and/or Sheldon Souray. If the Ducks won’t make Teemu Selanne or Saku Koivu available, they could consider moving any of Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan and Lubomir Visnovsky.
- Dave Lozo of NHL.com: The Red Wings have room to take on $24 million in cap space. Travis Moen and Ales Hemsky could be options.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: It’s unclear if the Flyers and defenseman Matt Carle have held serious contract talks. Carle will be a UFA and there is belief that he could get a deal similar to James Wisniewski’s 6 years, $33 million on the open market.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu practiced yesterday and could return tonight. Coach Mike Yeo on a possible trade:
“The one thing our entire team needs right now is just to go out on the ice with the idea that we’re good enough because we are. Obviously, if we can do things to make our team better I know there’s not a GM in the league who’s working harder than Chuck [Fletcher] on this. But having said that, we’ve beaten all the good teams in the West. We’ve proven ourself. When we play our game, we’ve proven what we can do.”
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blues forward Andy MacDonald should be back either Sunday or Tuesday. Alex Steen hasn’t skated this week, so his return is unknown.
- Eric Francis via twitter: Francis thinks the Flames can’t afford NOT to re-sign center Olli Jokinen.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets signed Vinny Prospal to a 1 year contract extension worth $2.5 million. He also got a no-trade clause.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Scouting the Ducks-Hurricanes game last night: Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, Lightning, Coyotes, Flyers, Predators, Rangers and Blues.
- Rich Chere of Star-Ledger: Johan Hedberg said he will start in net for the Devils tonight.

- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers GM Rick Dudley is actively looking to make a deal as his team is struggling. The Thrashers hold a 1 point lead on the 8th spot,
“As of [Tuesday] night, yes [we are seeking a trade],” Dudley said. “Are we looking to do something? Absolutely. We don’t want to let this go. Obviously we haven’t given up on the season. It would be ludicrous. We haven’t given up on improving either. If it doesn’t come from within, it will come from outside.”
Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd (captain) had a meeting with coach Ramsey about ‘unnamed players’ showing a lack of effort and commitment to winning, which was a consensus with the team.
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel: The Panthers have received offers for Stephen Weiss, and missing the playoffs each year may be getting to him. He has expressed that he’d like to remain a Panther.
“There are points where it really wears on you,” Weiss told NHL.com. “But at the back of my mind, I just want to try to play hard and when it does finally work here, it’ll feel that much better because you stuck it out. That’s not to say there haven’t been tough times, but this is where I got drafted and this is where I want to be.
“When the calls stop coming in and nobody wants you, that’s when you’re in trouble,” he said. “If you’re playing the way you should be, the interest will be there.”They would rather trade the expiring contracts of Bryan McCabe, Tomas Vokoun, Cory Stillman or Rostislav Olesz. GM Dale Tallon could be looking for draft picks.

Nabokov hangs up on Snow … Savard to be evaluated today … Stars-Leafs trade debunked … Forsberg could return next month
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 24th, 2011
- The New York Times: Shortly after being claimed by the Islanders on Saturday, GM Garth Snow called up Evgeni Nabokov, “Snow said when he identified himself on the phone, Nabokov immediately hung up.” Nabokov agent later talked to Snow, and said he didn’t realize it was him, he had 2 or 3 phones on the go with the media calling. Nabokov spoke with Snow on Sunday during the Isles game, where he was listed as a healthy scratch.
“I think I’m going to stay home for now, I’m sticking with my decision,” Nabokov said Sunday. “It’s nothing against the Islanders and their organization. It’s nothing to do with that. It’s just that I’m at the point in my career where I want to help a team win in the playoffs. I don’t see how I could help the Islanders or what I could do for them. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. And I hope they understand that.
“I was surprised they picked me up. I was like, ‘Wow, what’s the point?’”
- Stephan Harris of the Boston Herald: Marc Savard will be evaluated today to see if he suffered another concussion from the Matt Hunwick hit on Saturday night. “He still had those headaches (yesterday) morning. They haven’t deemed it anything yet. . . . They’re going to check him out to see if it’s real serious. It didn’t seem serious. This was a cautionary move on our part that everyone agreed on.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika debunks a rumor coming from Eklund. He talked to a couple people associate with the Stars and they said it was ridiculous. It had the Stars sending Brad Richards, Jamie Benn and Ondrej Roman to the Maple Leafs for Nazem Kadri, Clarke MacArthur, Kris Versteeg and a conditional pick. Heika brings up 3 points; why would Richards waive his no-trade to go to a team 12 points out of the playoffs, why wouldn’t the Leafs wait until after the season to acquire his rights, and Jamie Benn may be the last player the Stars would want to trade.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers are in need of blueliner who can ‘unload bombs’. Teams are dropping off the points and clogging the middle as there isn’t much threat from backend.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: “there’s no question in my mind Forsberg is going to play again in the NHL, and 99.9 percent it’ll be for the Avs. I’m totally convinced of it now, after observing Foppa today and talking with plenty of people who know him well.” Dater tweets, “My informed hunch: Foppa plays Feb. 3 against Minny at home. Barring setbacks of course”
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs have called up goalie James Reimer yesterday and he’ll likely play tomorrow night. Jonas Gustavsson may be sent down the Marlies on a conditioning stint, he wouldn’t have to clear waivers. If Gustavsson doesn’t play in the next couple games, and with the All-Star coming up, Gustavsson will have only played once in a month, and let in 6 goals in that games against the Rangers.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blues forward Andy McDonald has been skating for a week and will accompany the team on their 2 game road trip. He won’t play in either game but will begin practicing with the team. McDonald is recovering from a concussion.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: The Sharks were one of the teams that put a waiver claim on Nabokov.

He took part in his first full practice since his injury. It’s not known yet which game he’ll make his return, December 16th against Calgary has been a game he’s been focused on. When Phaneuf returns, the Leafs will have some decisions to make on the blueline, as they have plenty of NHL calibre defenseman.

I’ll go to that extent.”
-
David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The salary cap could go up $2.1 million from the current $59.4 million if the players exercise the 5% inflator clause. -
Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette: Andrei Markov will be a UFA after this season, has he worn a Canadiens jersey for the last time? Will they give him big money despite only playing 52 games and have 2 major knee surgeries. The Canadiens have plenty of time to figure out if need to find a replacement for him, trade deadline day is February 28th.

-
Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers continue to have $4.125 million dollars as healthy scratches, Todd White and Matt Gilroy. The longer they carry them, the more salary counts against their cap, which may make it more difficult to add a large salary, say a Brad Richards. Sather doesn’t want to send top young assets for Richards, since he could possibly get him for free on July 1st.
-
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Michael Leighton or Brian Boucher could be put on waivers once the Leighton’s conditioning stint is over. The Peguins “emphatically say” they are not going to trade Evgeni Malkin for wingers for Sidney Crosby.
Around the Boards: Ovechkin, Staal, MacDonald and Lecavalier Updates
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Videos on November 2nd, 2009
Injuries are the story of the day again, with 2 super stars leaving their games early. It was mentioned on either Friday or Saturday’s Maple Leaf game, that there were 100 players out with injuries. It’s simply amazing the amount of injuries with season.
- Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin is the latest star to go down with an injury, after leaving last nights game in the second period. Boudreau said after the game that Ovechkin is day-to-day with a ‘upper body injury’.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Eric Staal left in the second periods of last nights Hurricanes game with an ‘upper body injury’. The injury is not supposed to be serious.
- Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Andy MacDonald is day-to-day with his ‘upper body injury’, which could have been a lot worse after his face first slide into the boards Saturday night. If he didn’t move his head at the last minute to absorb the boards with the face and neck, he could have had a serious spinal injury. It was definitely a scary sight. For those who missed it,
- Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times: Vincent Lecavalier has once again found himself with new wingers as coach Tocchet searches for a way to get his star center going. Vinny will most likely be centering Drew Miller and Stephane Veilleux.
