Sharks interested in Niemi? Preds may not be talking to Theodore … Price-Canadiens talks are slow

- Gary Peterson of the San Jose Mercury News: Could the San Jose Sharks be interested in Antti Niemi? The Sharks have about $4 million in cap space, with 2 goalies under contract. Are Antero Niittymaki (2 years and $4 million) and Thomas Greiss good enough to take the Sharks to the finals?
- Jim Diamond of National Predators Examiner: As of Tuesday night, Predators GM David Poile said he’s fine with heading in to the season with Pekka Rinne and any one of his 4 goalie prospects who have never played an NHL game. Poile didn’t rule out looking for a more experienced goalie. Though the odds of signing him aren’t good, Poile said of Niemi, “We could call and see what he would be interested in, if there would be a fit.” Poile said (as of Tuesday night) that he has not talked to Jose Theodore. (It was rumored on Tuesday that they were talking, 1 year, $1.5 million.) The Preds still have RFA’s Patric Hornqvist and Cody Franson that they want to sign. Those negotiations are still a work in progress, Poile will talk to their agents late this week or early next week.
- Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out: Carey Price’s contact talks with the Canadiens are moving along at a slow pace, which is “relatively normal” according to his agent. The two sides are not close, but both sides are commited to getting a deal done. Price is looking for a short deal, a year or two.
- Randy Youngan of the OC Register: Ducks GM Bob Murray has been rebuilding their defense. The team was 29th in blocked shots and shots allowed. Four starters will be Visnovsky, Lydman, Sutton and Sheldon Brookbank. Murray hinted there could be another veteran Dman on the way. They have been rumored to be interested in Kevin Bieksa, and former Duck, Ruslan Salei wants to return. Murray did say they have 2 spots open for the young players.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Tim Thomas won’t get released by the Bruins, they’d like to trade him, might happen during the season.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Slava Kozlov is still hoping to play in the NHL, and is exploring options.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Former Oiler Ryan Potulny getting interest from the Blues and a few other teams.

Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Filatov: “I am coming back to CBJ in August. I have already spoken with GM. Haven’t talked to coach, but read he’s good w/young players.”
TSN: The Boston Bruins have granted Tim Thomas’ agent, Bill Zito, permission to talk to other teams about a possible trade.
Darren Dreger via Twitter: The Florida Panthers are willing to trade their recently acquired #15 overall pick, with the Edmonton Oilers showing interest.
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: LeBrun spoke with LA Kings GM today and said the goalie Jonathan Quick is not available for trade.
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: It’s looking like Lightning goalie, Antero Niittymaki, will be going to the open market.
Jim Kerr AM 880 Calgary: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini hopes to deal Sheldon Souray by Saturday, with Dallas and NY Rangers as possible teams interested.
TSN: The Montreal Canadiens have sent qualifying offers to Carey Price, Maxim Lapierre, Tom Pyatt, Mathieu Carle, and Sergei Kostitsyn. Benoit Pouliot was not qualified today, they have until the 28th to qualify him. Some people thought that the Canadiens would not qualify Kostitsyn and just let him walk, but I guess they want to hold on to his rights if he bolts for the KHL, or try to trade him so they don’t lose him for nothing.
Horton dealt by Draft, to Sabres? St. Louis to get extension … Oilers getting calls for #1

- Steve Gorten of the Sun Sentinel: Nathan Horton’s time as a Florida Panther could be close to coming to an end. It’s looking like he’ll be dealt by next weeks NHL draft, and it wouldn’t surprise his agent. Horton has 3 years left on his 6 years, $24 million contract. His no trade clause kicks in July 1st. The Buffalo Sabres definitely could use a winger with size, have shown interest, and have been rumored to be shopping Derek Roy and Tim Connolly.
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Steve Yzerman has started working on a contract extension for Martin St. Louis. What could complicate things a little are the numbers and term length, as St. Louis is 35 and the Lightning would be on the hook for the entire salary (and cap number) if he would retire early, so the deal has to make sense for them. Yzerman must also send a qualifying offer to Paul Ranger to retain his rights. Ranger missed all of last season for ‘personal injuries’, he would definitely improve their blueline. Yzerman will also look to re-sign Kurt Foster if the numbers make sense. The Lightning will take the best player available with the 6th overall pick, with a “remote” chance of trading it.
- Darren Dreger on TSN: The Oilers continue to get inquiries about the 1st overall pick, and GM Steve Tambellini will continue to listen to offers, they are unsure what it would take to get the pick though. David Booth, Dmitry Kulikov and Jacob Markstrom could be the only untouchables for Florida. Nathan Horton and Steven Weiss are available. The Predators are interested in Kris Versteeg. No offers have been sent to the Leafs for Tomas Kaberle yet. Teams may wait until the draft when the no-trade is lifted in fear that their proposal will be shopped to drive up the price. As many as 8 teams could put forth an offer.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: The Bruins have received some offers for the #2 pick, and GM Peter Chiarelli was impressed with one of the offers. But … “I’m not moving it,” Chiarelli said of the No. 2 position. “We’re going to take one of those two forwards.”
- Chris Koc of ChicagoBreakingsports.com: The Atlanta Thrashers have been granted permission to speak with Chicago Blackhawks associate coach John Torchetti. about their vacant head coaching position.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: It’s the year of the goalie. UFA’s: Evgeni Nabokov, Martin Biron, Dan Ellis, Michael Leighton, Chris Mason, Jose Theodore, Antero Niittymaki, Vesa Toskala, Johan Hedberg, Patrick Lalime, Manny Legace, Wade Dubielewicz, Alex Auld, Steve Valiquette, Andrew Raycroft, Yann Danis and Curtis Sanford. Goalies available for trade: Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak, Tim Thomas, Cristobal Huet. Turco would be a good fit in Philadelphia, but they might not think so. Martin Biron could end up being a backup in Buffalo where he started his career. The Lightning have had some discussion with their UFA goalie, Antero Niittymaki. The St. Louis Blues have begun talks with Chris Mason in hope of re-signing him.
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: Could the Washington Capitals head in to next season with two, 22-year old goalies, Neuvirth and Varlamov? GM McPhee didn’t rule out bringing back Jose Theodore. McPhee basically said that Karl Alzner and John Carlson will be playing full time on the Capitals blueline. They are talking with Eric Belanger about re-signing him. The team has talked with Shaone Morrisonn, but he isn’t a lock to be re-signed.

Around the Boards: Souray will waive ‘no-trade’ clause, Kovalchuk-Thrashers continue talks, Savard out 2-3 weeks

- Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: Sheldon Souray has let it be known that he’d be willing to waive his ‘no-trade’ clause if it ‘makes sense’ for his family. His family is out in California, so if he gets traded, expect it to be to a west coast/conference team. Souray has 3 years left on his contract at $5.4 million cap hit. He’s making $5.5 mill this year, and $4.5 mill the next 2 seasons.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers aren’t giving up on re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk.
On the ongoing contract talks with Ilya Kovalchuk, Waddell said: “Talks continue on. We met in Saskatoon (at the World Junior Championships). Our priority still remains to get him signed. We’ve made some progress but we are obviously not ready yet to put a signature on a contract.
“The positive thing is the talks have continued. They haven’t broken down. We talk almost daily. To me, that’s all part of the process. If talks break down because one side puts their shoes too far in the sand then you know you’re probably at an impasse. At this point, that hasn’t happened. Both sides continue to talk and try to find away to make this deal work.”
- Chris Zupke of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne expects to return to the Ducks lineup tonight. Changes could be coming for the Ducks if they continue to sit near the bottom of the Western Conference. JS Giguere, Scott Niedermayer, Saku Koivu, and Todd Marchant, could find themselves with another team before seasons end.
- Paul Hunt of the Toronto Star: Hunt lists some names who are unrestricted free agents this year that could be dealt at the trade deadline: Slava Kozlov, Colby Armstrong and Pavel Kubina (Atlanta), Saku Koivu (Anaheim), Paul Kariya (St. Louis), Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen (Carolina), Jeff Halpern, Antero Niittymaki and Alex Tanguay (Tampa), Martin Biron and Doug Weight (Islanders), Raffi Torres (Columbus), Steve Ott and Jere Lehtinen (Dallas), Alexei Ponikarovsky, Matt Stajan, Lee Stempniak and Vesa Toskala (Toronto)
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are now allowed to negotiate with RFA Jonas Gustavsson, but have yet to do so. The Leafs don’t feel any pressure or urgency to get something worked out right away.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Boston’s Marc Savard could be out for 2 to 3 weeks with a sprained knee. The Bruins were stayed healthy last season, the same can’t be said for this year.
