Blue Jackets interested in Bobrovsky … Timing not right for Red Wings trade … Whitney to see doctor on Monday … Reimer hits recovery plateau
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 4th, 2011
- Kelly Friesen via twitter: A NHL scout told Friesen that the Blue Jackets have interest in Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. A Flyers reporter told him that Bobrovsky isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Despite not having a great start to the season, Red Wings GM Ken Holland said the timing isn’t right to make a trade.
“I believe the answer is in the locker room. At the end of the day, you look around this league and it’s hard to make trades,” Holland said. “We think we have a bunch of guys we think can score 20 goals. Those guys who can score 20 goals, they’re on pace for three and four goals. Some haven’t even scored a goal.”
The Wings feel they are deep in prospects, and their 1st round pick could come into play.
“Maybe. Let’s see,” Holland said. “We obviously have cap space. I think it’s a different time. I think it’s too early. Let’s see where our team play is at. We’re hoping we’re a playoff team. I’m hoping to be involved in something, but it’s early right now.”
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is not sure if Chris Pronger will play on Wednesday against the Lightning, he’s not ruling it out.

- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos said the team needs a season-ticket base to be 13,000-14,000 but are about 3,000-4,000 short.

Horton may want to play, but still has symptoms … Bryzgalov to meet with Flyers this week … CBJ free agent notes … Schenn next for Leafs
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 15th, 2011
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: “Perception has #Bruins Horton in Van just 2 inspire but told he feels healthy enough to play and wants to convince Dr’s/team to let him play.” Joe Haggerty via twitter: Bruins coach Claude Julien said that Nathan Horton was still experiencing post-concussion symptoms as of yesterday. Players have to be symptom free for 7 days.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: On Thursday and Friday, Ilya Bryzgalov will meet with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and other organizational members. Bryzgalov’s agent Ritch Winter will continue to negotiate, not much progress has been made since the trade. He’s seeking more than $6 million a season, and it’s expected to be at least 5 years.
- Aaron Portline of the Columbus Dispatch: Defenseman Jan Hejda and the Columbus Blues Jackets are talking about a new contract, and hope to get something done by July 1st. Three UFA’s (Scottie Upshall, Andrew Murray, and Mathieu Garon) are likely to hit the open market. “With Scottie, we’ve said we’re certainly open to having him back with our club. I’m not sure we’re going to do anything before July 1, but we’re certainly open to talking after July 1.” GM Scott Howson has made it clear that the 8th overall pick could be had for immediate help. The Blue Jackets have already sent qualifying offers to RFA’s Jake Voracek and Marc Methot. It’s unsure if Anton Stralman and Sami Lepisto will get qualifying offers. They will try to re-sign UFA’s Kyle Wilson, Trevor Frischmon and Ben Guite, but they may test the market. Minor league RFA’s that are expected to get qualifying offers are: Mike Blunden, Tomas Kana and Nick Holden.
- Aaron Portline via twitter: Mike Commodore is likely to be bought out soon by the Blue Jackets.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers will likely try to trade 4th line agitator Zack Stortini at the NHL entry draft for a pick. If they can’t trade him they could either send him a qualifying offer to retain his rights or let him become a UFA. The Stars were interested in Stortini at one point last year but didn’t have an open roster spot. The Oilers can buyout Sheldon Souray starting today.
- Michael Traikos of the National Post: The Maple Leafs re-signed Carl Gunnarsson to a 2 year deal worth $2.6 million. “We’re very happy with his development,” said general manager Brian Burke, “and what he needs to do is come up with an 82-game season. He had a real good second-half each of the last two years. But he’s got to start better than he has.” Expect the Leafs to turn their focus to RFA Luke Schenn now. They are also expected to try and re-sign Clarke MacArthur, Tyler Bozak and Tim Brent.
“It’s not time-sensitive, for either player,” Burke said of negotiations with Schenn and MacArthur. “We’ve told Clarke if he wants to file for arbitration he can go ahead and file for arbitration. That’s part of the process. That’s part of the collective bargaining agreement. But we anticipate that he’s going to be under contract and play for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fall.”
- Gary Lawless via twitter: Possible candidates for the Winnipeg coaching spot are Kirk Muller, Claude Noel and Bob Woods.
- Josh Coope of The Tennessean: After making it into the 2nd round of the playoffs, the Predators are having their highest season-ticket renewal rate. The team is planning on unveiling new uniforms later this summer.
Crosby progressing … Parise possible for next week, Devils could offer arbitration … Varlamov to KHL? Audio of Recchi’s comments about Pacioretty’s injury
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Audio, NHL Injuries, NHL News on March 24th, 2011
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby has increased his intensity at practice, but management is taking the cautious approach. Teammates have said he has looked “mentally and physically sharp”. Crosby still needs to get medical clearance to take part in full practices. “Again, there’s no timetable for a progression from that standpoint,” Bylsma said. “He’s always in contact with the doctors, and his daily schedule is set in the morning.”
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Zach Parise is expected to ask for medical clearance this week, with a possible return to the lineup late next week if all goes well. Parise will be a RFA after this season and a it’s likely the Devils will offer arbitration, which would eliminate the option a team signing him to an offer sheet. If he signed a one year deal, he’ll be a UFA after next season.
- Dmity Chesnokov via twitter: Capitals goalie Semyon Varlamov’s Russian agent said that Varlamov (a RFA) is considering offers from the KHL, “a few elite KHL clubs are interested in Semyon” and that he’s “is considering the possibility.”
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Mark Recchi on 98.5 Sports Hub, “I believe they were trying to get Zdeno suspended & they embellished (Paciorettys concussion) a little bit”. Audio of Mark Recchi’s interview.
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The NHL reportedly asked the KHL for $2-3 million to have the Washington Capitals and NY Rangers play 2 exhibitions in Russia next year, the KHL said nyet. KHL president Alexander Medvedev said it was too much for them.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins forward Eric Tangradi, out since Feb. 11th with a concussion, practiced with the teams yesterday for the first time since the injury.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller was activated off the IR yesterday and backed up Ray Emery last night. There is a chance he starts tonight against Nashville.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: With all the changes and influx of young players in Ottawa, Cory Clouston might be auditioning still for next year, “I’m just trying to win hockey games,” he said Wednesday. “I’m trying to improve our team.” “I’m trying to help these young guys get better. I’m trying to help the older guys get better. I’m trying to create a team environment, to create a team atmosphere that’s conducive to moving the team forward.” Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson, Marek Svatos, Craig Anderson and Milan Michalek should all be ready to go tonight.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets defenseman Anton Stralman is out for tonight’s game with a knee injury.
Rumors involving the Toronto Maple Leafs for July 30th
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on July 30th, 2010
- Michael Traikos of the National Post: Six teams are reportedly still interested in Tomas Kaberle, so it looks good that Burke’s biggest asset will be moved by Aug. 15th. After the 16th Burke loses some control as the no-trade kicks back in. Kaberle could veto all deals during the season and leave a free agent, with the Leafs getting nothing in return (see Mats Sundin). This could be why Burke isn’t getting the home-run offer he’s seeking. “We’re not asking for anything,” Burke said. “We’re fielding offers. We’re either going to get an offer that makes sense for Tomas Kaberle or we’re going to keep him.” According to a Post source, the Leafs have already rejected a deal involving a top 6 forward and a draft pick. The Devils, Kings and Ducks could be waiting for the Kovalchuk saga to end before they make a move. Burke says “It’s clogging the waters,” referring to the Kovalchuk situation.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The countdown has begun for Tomas Kaberle’s August 15th trade cut-off date. Burke hopes the Kovalchuk situation gets cleared up quickly so some teams can turn their focus on Kaberle (NJ and LA could be involved regarding both players. Rumors to the Kings, who just lost defenseman Matt Green for 3 months, will heat up, he’ll only miss about 3 weeks of the regular season though). If the Leafs don’t get their top-6 forward from a Kaberle deal, they could go back to Marc Savard if the price comes down a bit.
- NHL Sources Say via twitter: The Maple Leafs could be interested in James Neal of the Dallas Stars, but would have to take some salary back, Mike Ribeiro could be that guy.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Rumor that the Minnesota Wild are interested in Tomas Kaberle are NOT true.
- Dave Fuller of the Toronto Sun: Scratch Columbus off the list of possible destinations for Tomas Kaberle after they avoided arbitration the other day with Anton Stralman. Now this may be true, but this team needs to make the playoffs, and an upgrade to their defense would be a step in the right direction, especially a power play quarterback.
League to look at other long-term deals? More ‘Hawks Options … Turco to decide in 7-10 days
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on July 28th, 2010
- William DePoali via twitter: Gary Bettman said yesterday that if the league wins its case against Ilya Kovalchuk, they may look in to other long-term deals.
- Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas: According to his agent, Marty Turco is going to play for a contending team next season. He has 3 potential landing spots, and will make a decision in the next 7 to 10 days.
- Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago: The Blackhawks and Antti Niemi have submitted their written briefs before their Thursday arbitration hearing. The ‘Hawks would like to keep Niemi but it all comes down to the price. One option to save cap space would be to go with a 21 man roster (2 below the max, which most carry), with the 21st player being able to play both forward and defense. If Niemi’s salary is below $2.5 million (and Victor Stalberg is sent to minors, saving $300K) they could do that (they’d also have a $1 million cushion for injuries). If the number is between $2.5 and $3 million, they’d have to make another move. If it’s over $3 million, he may not be their starting goalie next season. Marty Turco could be an option if they lose Niemi, they might be able to get him between $2 and $2.5 million.
- Chric Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Niemi is likely seeking between $3 and $4 million a season, the ‘Hawks probably closer to $2 million. The ‘Hawks could accept any ruling either way, and look to trade him, or someone else.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: The Boston Bruins are talking to Bill Guerin, but would need to make a roster move first. Penguins are still interested in him.
- Michael Arace of the Colubus Dispatch: (written before the Blue Jackets and Anton Stralman settled before their arbitration, 1 year, $1.95 million.) The Blue Jackets will look to improve their defense, and will look via trades and not free agency. 3 options could be Tomas Kaberle, Kevin Bieksa and Sheldon Souray. Arace believes the Blue Jackets have made a pitch for Kaberle, inquired about Bieksa, and made a ‘token’ call about Souray. Nikita Filatov’s name probably would come up.
- Tim Benz of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Penguins GM Ray Shero hasn’t completely ruled out bringing Bill Guerin back next season, and is still in touch with him. But at the moment they are looking at young kids to fill the holes.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Alexei Ponikarovsky signed a 1 year deal with the Kings (for $3.2 million cap hit). He wanted a 4 year from the Leafs on a ‘big ticket’ when he was with them.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Willie Mitchell could be a possibility for the Wild, but he’s not looking to take physicals just yet.
- William DePoali via twitter: Raffi Torres is getting some interest lately according to his agent.

- NHLPA.com: Media release from the NHLPA stating they’ve filed a grievance against the NHL for the rejection of Ilya Kovalchuk-New Jersey Devils contract.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: August 1st is when the Maple Leafs could be pushing clubs to make their best Tomas Kaberle offer, if not, he could remain a Leaf.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Mason Raymond locked up by the Canucks for 2 years, $5.1 million ($2.5 and $2.6 mill.)
- William DePaoli via twitter: Alexei Ponikarovsky mulling an offer he’s received in the last 72 hours.
- William DePaoli via twitter: The Rangers have spoken with Ponikarovsky’s agent, but they are in talks with Alexander Frolov.
- Arthur Staple (Newsday) via twitter: Alexander Frolov has a 4-year contract offer from the KHL, and likely a 2 year deal for less money from the Rangers.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche are about $8 million below the $43.8 cap floor, with RFA’s Peter Mueller and Chris Stewart left to re-sign. There is no rush to sign the two, but it’s expected to happen at some point.
- Chris Botta via twitter: It’s down to 2 western teams for Andy Sutton’s services, could be finalized this week.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: The Bruins and Blake Wheeler will be going to arbitration tomorrow as they were unable to to get something done beforehand.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Columbus Blue Jackets have requested a 1-year arbitration ruling for the Anton Stralman hearing, giving them the option to walk away from the contract if they are not happy with the ruling.
Canucks to be $4 million over cap … Devils could get fined … Stralman-Jackets far apart
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on July 25th, 2010
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The league did try to get a maximum of 5 year and 7 year contracts in the last CBA, but the PA wouldn’t go for it unless they were granted other terms. If the Maple Leafs found takers for Jeff Finger and Mikhail Grabovski, their free cap room number would be about $8 million. The Vancouver Canucks could be about $4 million over the cap after Mason Raymond’s arbitration case this week.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: There is the possibility that the NHL will fine the New Jersey Devils a $1 million (up to $5 million) for circumventing the CBA. Kovalchuk could get between $250,000 and a $1 million fine. The NHLPA has until tomorrow afternoon to file a grievance.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackest and Anton Stralman are about $1 million apart, arbitration is set for Wednesday. If Stralman’s ruling is too high, the club may walk away.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Paul Martin took a 5 year, $25 million deal from the Penguins on July 1st over other offers from Los Angeles, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Toronto.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: The Sabres continue to talk with Tim Kennedy, his arbitration hearing is set for July 27th. The Sabres don’t have any trade talks going on at the moment.
- William DePaoli (insidepghsports) via twitter: The Penguins haven’t talked to Paul Kariya, and it’s probably not going to happen.
Stralman Traded to the Blue Jackets
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Trades on September 28th, 2009
Anton Stralman didn’t last too long in a Calgary Flames jersey, as he was shipped to Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2010 3rd round pick. Columbus has been searching for a puck moving defenseman, and Stralman could be a good pick up for them. Stralman is still only 23 years old, and has recorded 22 points in 88 games.
The Flames acquired Stralman, Colin Stuart, and a 2012 7th pick from the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2011 2nd round pick and Wayne Primeau.
Morning Hits
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Trades on July 28th, 2009
Morning NHL news and notes for Friday July 28th.
- The Maple Leafs have traded Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart, and a 2012 7th Round Pick to the Calgary Flames for Wayne Primeau and a 2011 2nd Round Pick. The Leafs had 10 NHL calliber defenceman under contract, Stralman was the 10th. I’m thinking the 2012 7th round pick was the deal breaker. Sutter must of said, “we’re not doing this deal unless you throw in a 7th round pick, 2 years from now”.
- If Jerry Reinsdorf is the winning bid for the Phoenix Coyotes, he doesn’t plan to keep Wayne Gretzky around. Gretzky is scheduled to make $8 million per season.
- P.J. Axelsson is leaving the Boston Bruins and the NHL, signing a 4 year deal with Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League. The Bruins will be tight against the cap and didn’t have room for the defensive minded Axelsson.
- Not only do the Pittsburgh Penguins get helpful information from Mario Lemieux, they also get help from a ‘homeless’ guy. Starting February, James Hoop has been tossing items and notes into Mario’s yard.
- The Phildalephia Flyers are bringing in Ole-Kristian Tollefson for a physical. If they sign him, he’ll compete with Randy Jones, Matt Carle and Ryan Parent for the 6/7th spot on the blueline. He would give the organization some depth on defense.
