Flyers in no rush to call up Schenn … Doughty to IR … Hemsky resting for 2-3 weeks … Kesler skating hard … Some starting goalies tonight

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers are in no hurry to bring Brayden Schenn up from the AHL as he’s refining his game and there is a logjam on their roster. “When it’s the right time, he’ll be here,” general manager Paul Holmgren said on Sunday. “He’ll continue to play for the Phantoms for a little bit, anyway. I’m not sure, lineup-wise, where he’d fit in with the Flyers right now.” Blair Betts was placed on LTIR. Zac Rinaldo could be sent down when Jody Shelley finishes his 5 games suspension. They would have just enough cap space to recall Schenn at that point. If/when they do recall him, he could place him on the 3rd line with Sean Couturier and move Matt Read to the 4th line. It appears that Courturier will stick with the Flyers for the year.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The LA Kings have put Drew Doughty on the IR. He’s expected to be out 7 to 10 days with a shoulder injury. The Kings have recalled Slava Voynov from the AHL.
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ales Hemsky will be resting his sore right shoulder for 2 to 3 weeks. It does not involve the labrum that was repaired last March. Ben Eager is expected to play his first game this week. Ryan Whitney should be returning soon too.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Ryan Kesler skated hard yesterday for an hour without teammates. It’s not known exactly when he’ll return, but he is entering the 10 to 12 week window.

“It’s smart for me to take my time now and let everything heal. I’m not a guy who plays on the perimeter, I want to get in there and battle. I’m getting closer but obviously I still feel it [hip] at times out there — just certain movements I don’t feel comfortable doing yet. I’m not going to come back until I feel comfortable or I’m 100 per cent.”

Oct. 26th or Oct. 28th could be possible dates.

Bettman to meet with Edmonton’s Owner and Mayor … Smid and Whitney status unknown … Iginla ready … Greiss will start for Sharks

  • John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal: Gary Bettman has invited Oilers owner Daryl Katz and Edmonton’s Mayor Stephen Mandel to New York from some constructive dialogue on the arena project.

“I invited them in because I’m concerned that the framework for a deal hasn’t been agreed upon and isn’t there yet,” Bettman said in a telephone interview on Friday. “Since time is now of the essence, I want to see if I can be helpful in getting the parties to speak the same language.”

“I’m trying to help them be able to talk to each other and understand where they are, to see whether or not they’re capable of making a deal.

“I’m trying to be a facilitator.”

They’ve been negotiating for 3 years, and Katz’s Oct. 31st deadline is fast approaching.

  • JoAnne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Taylor Fedun was released from hospital and flew back to Edmonton 1 week after breaking his right femur. A decision on whether Ladislav Smid plays in tonight’s opener will be made today. Ryan Whitney’s status is also up in the air. He didn’t do any work on the power play at practice yesterday, which may mean he isn’t ready to go.
  • Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Thomas Greiss will be in net for the Sharks opener tonight against the Coyotes.

“Antti is very close to being healthy enough,” McLellan said. “When you talk about health, you’re talking physically and mentally. There’s a recovery from injury and finding your game. Our schedule has been kind to us because we get a few days off again before we play next. We would rather target that than opening night.”

Their next game after the opener is next Friday.

  • David Alter via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri “more than likely” will play a few games with the Marlies once he’s healthy according to Ron Wilson.

RNH makes the Oilers … Pens cut roster, put Crosby and 4 others on IR … Roster notes for the Blackhawks, Isles, Preds, Sharks and Leafs

  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will start the season with the Oilers. RNH was skating with Ales Hemskyand Taylor Hall.

“Ryan will start the season with us,” said Renney. “We all understand the parameters there that he can operate within before we have to make a real concrete decision. Again, we’ll do it a game at a time, but he has had a very good camp.”

When Sam Gagne returns from injury, Anton Lander could be sent to the AHL. Lennart Petrell could be the casualty when Ben Eager returns from a concussion.

  • Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins have their roster set at 23 players. They sent Alexandre Picard, Brian Strait and Jason Williams to the AHL, Joe Morrow to back junior, and put Sidney Crosby (concussion), Dustin Jeffrey (knee), Nick Petersen (concussion), Robert Bortuzzo (knee) and Boris Valabik (knee) on the IR. Defenseman Brooks Orpik could be close to returning.
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Blackhawks cut their roster to 27 yesterday by sending Jimmy Hayes, Marcus Kruger, Peter LeBlanc and Brandon Pirri and  Dylan Olsen to the AHL. They have 16 forwards, 8 defenseman and 3 goalies still in camp. Viktor Stalberg will likely be put on the IR. Jeremy Morin and Philippe Paradis are possible candidates to be sent to the AHL.
  • Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: The Islanders placed both Nino Niederreiter and Trevor Gillies on the IR with groin strains. Niederreiter was expected to make the team, and not be heading back to junior. He had been playing on the top line with John Tavares and Matt Moulson. The Isles still have 26 players on their roster. Jay Pandolfo is still in camp on an invite.
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators forward Mike Fisher practiced with teammates for the first time yesterday after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. Fisher did say that he won’t be ready for the season opener, and has not been cleared for contact yet. Defenseman Ryan Ellis was assigned to Milwaukee of the AHL so he can better understand the pro game. The Preds put Kyle Wilson on waivers.
  • Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks assigned Justin Braun, Benn Ferriero and John McCarthy to Worcester of the AHL. Goalie Antti Niemi is looking like he’ll be able to go for the season opener. The Sharks still have 28 players on their camp roster, Antero Niittymaki and James Sheppard will be put the IR, leaving 3 moves that will have to be made.
  • Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Matt Ducheneis entering the final year of his entry level deal, and is likely to get a nice raise.

“If I take care of business, that’s a reward. That’s not something that you aim for. It’s not a destination. It’s a byproduct,” he said matter of factly.

Duchene has 1 more point in his short career than Islanders John Tavares, who recently signed a 6 year, $33 million deal. Duchene agent, Pat Brisson (Tavares’ agent as well), hasn’t talked extension with the Avalanche yet.

  • James Mirtle via twitter: Maple Leafs center Tim Connolly is 50/50 for the season opener. Matthew Lombardi will start the year on the 4th line. Kevin McGran via twitter: Leafs defenseman Cody Franson will be the teams 7th defenseman to start the season.

Crosby’s doctors differ … Doughty has Kings best offer … Schenn, Baily salary breakdown … Injury notes on Kane, Sharp, Markov, Fisher and Niemi

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby has been cleared to practice but his medical team can’t agree on when he should be ready for contact. A Florida-based chiropractor who has been examining Crosby told a Pittsburgh radio station that he’s ready for contact. Crosby’s doctors at a concussion clinic may not think so and stand behind their comments at the news conference earlier this month, ”We’re going to make sure we introduce contact in a very careful way,” Collins said at the time. “And we’re not even close to that right now.”
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi told LeBrun that he feels they made their best possible offer to Drew Doughty, 7 years at a $6.8 million average.
  • Renaud Lavoie via twitter: Luke Schenn salary breakdown: $3.6 million with a $1 signing bonus this year, and $3.35 million in the remaining 4 years. Also has a modified no trade clause.
  • Renaud Lavoie via twitter: The Islanders re-signed Josh Bailey to a 2 year deal. He’ll get $800,000 this year and $1.3 million next year.
  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane is still wearing a splint on his left wrist and is taking a cautious approach with it.

“I’m going be cautionary about putting myself in contact right away,” Kane said Friday. “I’ll be doing practice with whatever team is out there, working real hard to get my range of motion back.”

“They said if it was the middle of the season right now, and if I wanted to play, I could play,” Kane said. “It’s just making sure we don’t make it any worse and I’m fully 100 percent ready to go.”

Marian Hossa is still in Slovakia as he attended a Pavol Demitra’s memorial on Thursday, and will join the team soon. The Blackhawks aren’t too worried that Patrick Sharp could miss the entire preseason.

“Sharp was in excellent shape,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “Through that process of taking the necessary time to heal himself up to get ready, he’s a finely tuned athlete. He can play through a lot of different injuries. We saw that last year how quickly he got back, particularly at a critical time of the year.”

  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov won’t be taking the ice with teammates today:

“I wish I could skate with the team tomorrow or today, but I want to be 100-per-cent sure I’m healthy,” Markov said Friday as he discussed his rehabilitation from major knee surgery. “I don’t want to come back for a few games. I’d like to stay here for the long term, and that’s what we’re looking for.”Markov, who signed a 3 year, $17.5 million deal in the off-season, has had 2 surgeries to repair is his ACL in his right knee.

“He said the healing is good,” Markov said of his meeting with Andrews. “Everything in the knee, like the bones and muscles, is good. I had a little swelling at that time, but he said it’s normal for a second surgery.”

If Markov is out for an extended period of time, GM Pierre Gauthier may have to go looking for a defenseman.

  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson plans on cutting his training camp roster from 70 to 40 by Wednesday and down to 26 or 27 by next weekend.

“I’m cutting through all the B.S. here and getting right down to the NHL players,” Wilson said. “I’m not worried about where we’re going to be in two or three years. My primary responsibility is making the playoffs this year and getting off to a good start.”

Wilson would have 2 exhibition game with 40 players and 3 games with close to regular season lineup.

  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators Mike Fisher’s recovery from shoulder surgery is going slower than he had hoped.“I’m just going to kind of work my way in here, just trying to get stronger. Still not ready for contact or anything. But I am skating and starting to shoot a bit, and it’s coming. I’m just really not sure as far as timetable. I just have to be patient.”
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien weighed in well under the 269 pounds he weighed in last year in Atlanta. Josh Rimer via twitter: Rimer is hearing that the Jets are considering moving Dustin Byfuglien back to forward this year.

Sabres looking to make trades, could have trouble in new CBA … Possible lines for Rangers … Who plays with E. Staal? Markov has knee drained

  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Sabres are still about $3.6 million over the salary cap ceiling, and will be actively looking to make trades before their Oct. 7th season opener.
  • Mike Harrington via twitter: After signing Tyler Myers to the 7 year, $38.5 million contract extension, Harrington thinks that Sabres must be thinking the salary cap is going up to the $68-70 million range next year. They will now start working on Tyler Ennis.
  • Bob McKenznie via twitter: Wouldn’t be surprised if during the next CBA that the NHL tries to get each year of a contract the same. The player would receive their cap hit each year. Greg Wyshynski via twitter: “I applaud creative accounting like Buffalo’s this summer. Until next CBA adjusts the calculation of the cap, go bananas, GMs not named Lou.”
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers winger Wojtek Wolski will likely be given a shot to be on a line with Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. If that doesn’t work out, Tortorella could move Brandon Dubinsky to the left wing on the top line. Brooks wonders is Sean Avery can earn a significant role with the Rangers, but if not, then what? Lines could look like: Wolski-Richards-Gaborik; Dubinsky-Artem Anisimov-Ryan Callahan; Ruslan Fedotenko-Derek Stepan-Zuccarello (his spot to lose); Michael Rupp-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust. Defense pairings could look like: “Marc Staal-Dan Girardi; McDonagh-Sauer (if healthy); a third pair with Erixon, Steve Eminger, Del Zotto and Pavel Valentenko in the mix.”
  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Who plays with Hurricanes all-star Eric Staal is up in the air after the departures of Eric Cole and Cory Stillman. Jeff Skinner’s name has come up in talks for the left side, but Alexei Ponikarovsky may get the first look. Jussi Jokinen, Anthony Stewart and Zac Dalpe are names being mentioned for the right side.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks winger Martin Havlat is listed as day-to-day as he’s still recovering from shoulder surgery that he had last May. Antti Niemi had a cyst removed and may miss the first day of camp. Antero Niittymaki is heading to see a specialist for a groin-related problem, he missed 17 games last year.

“We’ve exhausted all the conservative therapy that we’ve had with him,” Wilson said. “There’s a procedure that can get him pain-free so we’re supportive of that. If that procedure takes place, he’ll be out for probably 12 weeks or so.”

Sharks prospects Tony Lucia and James Marcou are still dealing with post-concussion symptoms and won’t be at camp. Nick Petrecki and Frazer McLaren are day-to-day as they recover from off-season hip procedures. James Sheppard will be out for another 2 months as he recovers from knee surgery.

  • Kevin Mio of Hockey Insider/Out: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov suffered a setback a couple weeks ago. He had his knee drained of water, and it will take some time to rehab it again. Tony Marinaro said on Team 990 that the problem developed from training too hard. Former NHLer Enrico Ciccone doubted Markov would be ready for the season opener.

Schneider left due to cramp … NY Rangers have some off-season decisions to make … Malkin back before Crosby … Niemi to start

  • Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks goalie Cory Schneider left with under 3 minutes to go in the 3rd period. He had to be helped off the ice after his leg cramped up.

“The cramps, he said, “I could feel coming on after the second and sure enough, on that penalty shot, I just extended my leg and it completely seized up. I felt bad making Lou go in cold in the third.”

Now the question will be, who will start game 7?

“Oh, if I would tell you who I’m going to play, would you believe me now?” said Vigneault, who said he didn’t actually lie, he just “went with the gut.”

  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks defenseman Sami Salo lasted only 3 shifts last night with an undisclosed injury. Aaron Rome or Keith Ballard could replace him for Game 7.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers have 7 RFA’s to deal with this off-season. Forwards, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, and Brian Boyle. Defenseman Matt Gilroy and Michael Sauer and goalie Chad Johnson. They’ll likely want to bring back UFA Ruslan Fedotenko, and possibly Vinny Prospal. Alex Frolov likely won’t be back. Steve Eminger and Bryan McCabe are UFA’s on the backend. The Rangers will likely go after 31  year old Brad Richards. The Rangers wouldn’t confirm a report that coach John Tortorella signed a 3 year contract extension.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The NY Rangers summer salary cap number is at $47.6 million, with the projected cap number of next year at $62.2 million. Their cap number doesn’t include any of their 6 RFA’s (Brooks didn’t include Chad Johnson), which should about $12 million to sign the 6. If Wade Redden doens’t retire, the Rangers will be on the hook for his contract again, and can’t remove it until they waive him in training camp. Buying out the last year of Chris Drury’s contract would save them $3,333,333 in cap space this year, but would carry a $1,666,667 in 2012-13. Wojtek Wolski carries a $3.8 million next year, and if bought out, would save them $3,333,333 next year. A Sean Avery buyout would save them $1,333,334 in cap space next year. Vinny Prospal, Bryan McCabe and Steve Eminger likely won’t be offered a contract. They won’t offer Matt Gilroy a $2.1 million qualifying offer, but are expected to give him a 2 year offer worth half that.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Rossi has heard from someone close to the Penguins organization that he would expect to see Evgeni Malkin back in the Penguins lineup before Sidney Crosby. Malkin may be able to return if the Penguins get deep in to the playoff, Rossi asked that organization what deep meant, and “was told deep meant conference finals or Stanley Cup Final.”
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Antti Niemi will start Game 6 for the Sharks. “Nemo will play tomorrow. He is our guy,” coach Todd McLellan said Sunday after practice. “We don’t expect him to be perfect,” McLellan said of Niemi. “We expect him to be a little bit better and I think he expects that of himself.”
  • Eric Stephen of the OC Register: With the Ducks eliminated from the playoffs, questions regarding whether Teemu Selanne will retire or not are already appearing. When asked late in the season, Selanne said he’d make the decision before July 1st.  Selanne is coming off a 31 goal, 80 point season.

Waffle thrower revealed … Datsyuk breaks hand … Miller going for win #200 …. Gaborik out tonight.

  • Jennifer Pagliaro of the Globe and Mail: Waffles have been a hot topic around the Toronto Maple Leafs recently, with the 2nd waffle throwing incident taking place on Monday. But this time the culprit was caught. Joe Robb was charged with mischief after he thew a box of Eggo’s over the boards during play. Joe is a ‘diehard’ fan, but is frustrated with the team. “I didn’t intend for it to hurt nobody and maybe I shouldn’t have done it while the play was going on,” the 31-year-old Oakville resident told The Globe and Mail Wednesday. “I totally love the Leafs and that’s pretty much my hobby, to watch the team play.” He’s been banned “indefinitely” from the ACC and other MLSE venues. In case you haven’t seen the video, it’s at the bottom of this post. Keep your eye on just above the Rogers sign to see Joe in action.
  • John Niyo of the Detroit News: Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk will be out for at least a month after breaking a bone in his right hand last night. Datsyuk tripped over Mikael Samuelsson and fell awkwardly with less than 2 minutes left in the first.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller will go for career win number 200. He would be the 67th goalie to reach 200 wins. The 30 year old Miller has posted a career 199-114-37 record.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Keith Yandle is the Coyotes leading scorer and will be an RFA at season’s end. He’s currently making $1.3 million and will be looking for a nice raise. GM Don Maloney can’t do anything until the new owner takes over. Both sides will be paying attention to other RFAs Shea Weber, Jack Johnson, and Drew Doughty.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Marian Gaborik was unable to practice yesterday and will not be in the lineup for the NY Rangers tonight. Gaborik could return on Monday. Michael Del Zotto is out with the flue. The Norwegian Hobbit Mats Zuccarello was called up to yesterday. Ryan Callahan will be out until February with a broken left hand.
  • Ken B|elson of the NY Times: Practically every team has inquired about hosting or participating in the 2012 Winter Classic, the Commish Gary Bettman, said it’s too early to say where it will be held next New Year’s Day. The league had hoped to hold a game at Yankee stadium but the “Pinstripe Bowl” is held a few days before New Year’s Day.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News:  SJ Sharks Douglas Murray skated yesterday but it’s still not known if he’ll return tonight. Antero Nittymaki (12-3-3, 2.31 GAA) may have the upper hand over Antti Niemi (6-8-2, 3.15 GAA). Coach Todd McLellan will still continue to use both goalies, but my go with the hotter goalie more often.
  • Don O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: St. Louis Blues injured forward TJ Oshie skated for 45 minutes before yesterday’s optional skate. Oshie broke his left ankle on Nov. 10th and is projected to be re-evaluated in mid-February. Patrick Berglund left Tuesday’s game early but will be in the lineup tonight.
  • James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk (NBC Sports): Cam Ward is likely to play tonight despite having an infection on his forehead that swelled up so bad it almost closed his left eye. Matt Bradley will be out for 2-4 weeks with a broken finger. Patrick Kaleta is listed as day-to-day after only playing 1 period on Tuesday.

NHL Trade talks beginning … Leafs get offer … Could the Flyers trade Carter? Bruins up for trading Leafs pick? Yandle not going anywhere?

  • David Pagnotta via twitter: Teams like the Maple Leafs, Coyotes, Senators, Bruins, Ducks and Kings are starting to make trade calls but nothing is imminent.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Noted for the 10,000 time, Brian Burke won’t ask Tomas Kaberle to waive his no trade clause.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Maple Leafs received a trade offer, it was a 2 for 2 deal involving bottom 6 forwards, with one of the players they would move being a Toronto Marlie. McKenzie also added the deal wasn’t ‘laughable’, realistic goal is to upgrade bottom 6 because the options aren’t there to upgrade the top 6.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers are deep at center with Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Daniel Briere, and have winger Claude Giroux who was a center. If things don’t improve with the Flyers, they may look at trading Carter, who’ll be a RFA at season end. They could use a top end winger.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: It was brought up yesterday that the Bruins are interested in Keith Yandle, and could be interested in prospects Mikkel Boedker and Viktor Tikhonov. The Bruins need to move out salary, and the Coyotes have around $9 million in cap space. The names at the top of Boston trade options are Blake Wheeler and Michael Ryder, with Matt Hunwick and Mark Stuart also as possibilities. It wouldn’t surprise Haggerty if the 1st round pick they acquired from the Maple Leafs is also in play. Tim Thomas’s solid start may increase his trade value.
  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: “Another day, a couple more mindless, idiotic Twitter rumors.” Gintonio says that Keith Yandle is not going anywhere. “Probably 90 percent of the teams in the NHL are interested in Yandle; just as the Coyotes and 29 other teams are “interested” in Drew Doughty or Duncan Keith or Mike Green.”
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: San Jose Sharks coach, Todd McLellan has no plan on how he’ll be using his goalie, Antti Niemi and Antero Niittymaki. Niitymaki may have the leg up. “Right now, it’s who we feel comfortable with on that given day,” McLellan said Tuesday. “Nitty, let’s face facts, has been better than Antti has, so we lean that way a little right now.”

Kozlov to KHL … 3 NHL caliber goalies in SJ … Fehr wants $7.5 mill through 2012 … More on Staal, Savard and Maltby

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Fehr’s price tag for being the NHLPA executive director is $7.5 million through 2012, players start to “hmm and haw”.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks now have 3 NHL caliber goalies after signing Antti Niemi. Antero Niittymaki (signed this off-season for $2 million a year, 2 years) and Thomas Greiss were expected to battle for the starting position before the Niemi signing. Niittymaki doesn’t feel that concerned, but Greiss was more disappointed, as he’s probably the #3 goalie now. Greiss has talked to GM Doug Wilson about the situation, which might involve a change of scenery.
  • Chris Kuc via twitter: Antti Niemi’s agent said that he had “four or five offers” before he decided to sign with the Sharks.
  • Steve Zipay of Newsday: Speculation, not a rumor. The Bruins could send Marc Savard to the Rangers for possibly Matt Gilroy, Sean Avery and a 2nd round pick.
  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland met with Kirk Maltby on Wednesday, and is waiting to hear back from him. Maltby would have to earn a spot on the roster, and it might take an injury or 2 to get a spot.
  • Terry Frei of the Denver Post: RFA Chris Stewart signed a 2 year contract worth $5.75 million, $2.5 million this year, $3.25 million next year. Peter Mueller still remains unsigned by the Avalanche. The Avs currently sit $950,000 below the cap floor.

Kovalchuk decision today … New player in Phoenix ownership … Niemi close to new home

  • Tom Gulitti of the Record: The NHL spent Monday reviewing Ilya Kovalchuk’s 15 year, $100 million contract, with an announcement likely coming today. It is not known if the league has already let the Devils know their decision, before it would released to the public. The NHL must rule before 5:00 pm on Wednesday or the contract would deemed approved and registered. According to tweets by Nick Kypreos, Kovalchuk would be paid $90 million over the first 10 seasons, and $10 million over the last 5. In the last year of the deal he is scheduled to have a base salary of $4 million, with the average salary over the final 3 seasons being $2.6 million.
  • Mike Sunnucks of the Phoenix Business Journal: An undisclosed wealthy person is interested in purchasing the Phoenix Coyotes from the NHL, and keeping the team in Glendale. Details are limited, but could be made public soon, they have asked to keep the negotiations private. The Ice Edge Holdings group have taken a backseat and they have been focusing on bringing an ECHL team to Thunder Bay, Ontario. If a deal is not in place by December 31st to keep the team Phoenix, they will look to sell the team to someone, and move them Canada.
  • James Murphy of ESPN Boston: According to a source of Murphy, the Bruins are still “actively shopping” Marc Savard. His contract investigations have hampered talks. The Bruins are still over the salary cap ceiling and need to get under before the start of the season.
  • James Murphy of ESPN Boston: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli originally told Steve Begin that they wouldn’t be bringing him back, but according to Begin they are still  interested, but currently sit $3 million over the cap. Begin told RDS that the Bruins are trying to do some things, but the market is slow.
  • Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago: Source telling Rogers that Antti Niemi is close to deciding where he’ll play next season, with a decision possibly coming in the next 48 hours. He has offers from multiple teams.
  • James Mirtle via twitter: Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke says there is some progress being made with RFA, Christian Hanson, and he expects it to be done by training camp.
  • Mark Stepneski of ESPN Dallas: There is still no decision by Jere Lehtinen on if he’ll play next season, but according to a Finnish paper, Lehtinen is giving serious consideration into not playing next season. GM Joe Nieuwendyk said that he hasn’t been working out as much as he normally does when preparing for the season.
