Injury notes on Gagner, Steen, Jackman, Brassard, Sullivan … Kubina gets 3 games for elbow with video

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers Sam Gagner is done for the year after a tendon was severed in his hand after being inadvertently by teammate Ryan Jones. “You hop over the boards 50 times a game and this one time a teammate is reaching for a water bottle,” said Jones. “I heard him yell but then I went onto the ice and by the time I came back he was in the dressing room. This is the first for me something like this happening. I talked to Sam (after the game in Washington). He thought he’d be fine.”
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blues forward Alex Steen and defenseman Barret Jackman are likely done for the season. Steen suffered a high ankle sprain, and Jackman has a fractured finger that requires surgery. Both are out 4-6 weeks.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who just returned from a hand injury, blocked a shot with his ankle, missed practice yesterday and is questionable for tonight.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution: 2 groups and 1 individual are in discussions to possibly purchase the Atlanta Thrashers, and keeping them in Atlanta. 2 entities are local. 2 other groups showed interest in buying the Thrashers, Hawks and the Philips Arena. Documents presented in court say the Thrashers have lost $130 million in the last 5 years. (only lost $130 million … no wonder there are 5 groups interested … sarcasm)
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators forward Steve Sullivan underwent a procedure last week to help his cronic groin injury, and would keep him out for 4-6 weeks.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Craig Anderson’s agent and Senators GM Bryan Murray will talk again after the GM meeting. An offer could be in the 3 years and $9.3 million range.

“I’m not giving ultimatums here,” Justin Duberman, the representative for goalie Craig Anderson, stressed in a phone call Thursday. “But I am saying that, when you deal with free agents, players talk. And they want to go to organizations that treat their players right. Ottawa is of those places, because the people that run this place are honest.

“I hope that the people who are there remain. I think they know what they’re doing. They’re honest, and they’ve treated the players I’ve had there with professionalism and respect. I’ve got all the time in the world for honest people in this business because they’re hard to find.

“If you were to ask Craig how he’s been treated since he got there, it’s been first-class all the way. I think that comes from the top.

“I’m not giving ultimatums, but we’re very, very comfortable with the structure that is in place currently. Very comfortable with it.”

  • Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: The Islanders and center Zenon Konopka haven’t had any contract extension talks yet. The Isles were asking for a 2nd round pick for him at the trade deadline. There has been “some disappointment” according to his agent, but Zenon wants to stay.
  • Tim Sasssone of the Daily Herald: Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina was suspended 3 games for his elbow on Blackhawks center David Bolland.

Do you think the NHL got it right with a 3 games suspension?

Wisniewski takes puck in face … Some guy named Kaberle, Leafs goalie issues … What the Blues could do … Kings in lead for Hemsky

  • Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman James Wisniewski took a Taylor Hall shot just beneath his eye last night. He left a pool of blood on the ice and was taken to hospital. It’s unclear at the moment the extent of the injury. Nick Kypreos via twitter:  There is the fear that he suffered a broken cheekbone, interest in Eric Brewer may increase.
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Star: There is talk that a Tomas Kaberle trade to the Bruins could happen today. Burke met with captain Dion Phaneuf and told him that they had not given up on the playoffs despite making the trades and rumors of more deals coming. But if by some chance they get into the playoffs, Burke told NHL Live, “We’re not just putting together a team that’s going to get thumped in the first round.” There are rumors that Blake Wheeler could be heading to the Leafs in a Kaberle deal, Burke said they are talking to multiple teams.
  • Shawn Starr (Team 990) via twitter: Quotes Bob McKenzie on Kaberle to Bruins, “If the deal gets done, it gets done today, if I were a betting men, the deal gets done today”
  • Katie Carerra of the Washington Post:  Mike Green missed his 3rd consecutive game with inner-ear trauma he suffered after taking a puck in the head on Feb. 6th. He underwent more tests yesterday which went well.
  • Katie Carerra of the Washington Post: The Capitals may biggest need may be a 2nd line center, but they also may look to add to their blueline. Tom Poti’s return is not known. Some possible blueline additions could be Chris Phillips, Tomas Kaberle, Ed Jovanovski, and Eric Brewer. GM George McPhee doesn’t intend to add a veteran goalie. Some forwards that could be available are Blake Wheeler, Ales Hemsky, Alex Kovalev, and Niclas Bergfors.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs are running out of healthy goalies with JS Giguere possibly not able to backup James Reimer on Saturday due to his sore groin, 5th string Ben Scrivens may get the call up. It was a Boston radio station that suggested the Leafs were possibly getting Wheeler and pick for Kaberle. “But the rumour mill suggested Burke was more interested in Bruins rookie forward Jordan Caron, a 20-year-old first round pick (25th) from the 2009 draft.”
  • St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Jeremy Rutherford thinks Eric Brewer may be the only Blues piece that could net much of a return for the team. He’ll be a UFA at the end of the year, but if they have a desire to re-sign him, they likely wouldn’t trade him. Dan O’Neill thinks that Eric Brewer and Barret Jackman may get some interest, and under certain circumstances they may consider a Erik Johnson deal if the package is right. Brad Boyes might be in play. Jeff Gordon thinks trading a defenseman for a forward makes sense, but getting draft picks back doesn’t. They need to spend some money in this off-season. Andy Strickland (of True Hockey) thinks Brewer is 3rd on the list of available defenseman behind Kaberle and Philips. They may also look to move a player or 2 from their AHL team. The ownership situation doesn’t allow them to take on salary.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The LA Kings may be the leading team to acquire Ales Hemsky, but they are not the only team involved. Jim Matheson via twitter: Wonders if Wayne Simmonds and Colten Teubert would be enough of a return for Hemsky? Simmonds is a 3rd liner, and some scouts wonder about Teubert’s smarts.
  • Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks Dustin Penner would look good in the Canadiens lineup, their forward group is small. Defensive prospect Jarred Tinordi would be nice coming back.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Antero Niittymaki’s return from his lower body injury is up in the air which may force GM Wilson to look for a backup goalie before the deadline. Thomas Greiss could be a possibility when his Swedish season ends in March.
  • Globe and Mail Audio:  Eric Duhatschek, James Mirtle, Sean Gordon and host Darren Yourk talk “Mario Lemieux’s scathing criticism of the NHL, Sunday’s Heritage Classic and who is buying and who is selling at the trade deadline.”

Blues looking for scoring … Kane out weeks … Samuelsson has ‘mild’ concussion … What the Stars may want from the Rangers for Richards

  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong has been looking to make a trade, even before Andy MacDonald suffered his upper body injury. The Blues are missing 3 of their top 6 forwards. ”I would say over the last couple of weeks, I’ve touched base with all the teams to find out what they’re thinking, what’s going on,” Armstrong said. “At this point, I know some things I’d like to accomplish, and if we can find a willing partner, then I think we’ll have to explore some changes. We’re not getting the results we need to right now and when that happens, potential changes can come.” The Blues will be looking for a scoring forward, and will likely have to move a defenseman.  Eric Brewer and Barret Jackman have no trade clauses, and teams may target Erik Johnson, Alex Pietrangelo and Ian Cole.
  • Iain MacIntrye of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson will be out at least a week with a ‘mild’ concussion. Mason Raymond returned practiced after missing a game with the flu.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers have been granted permission by the NHL for Michael Leighton to have an extended AHL rehab stint for 2 more games. The Flyers won’t have to make a roster decision for another week.
  • Mike Hieka of the Dallas Morning News: If the Dallas Stars were to trade Brad Richards to the NY Rangers, they’ll likely target centerman or defenseman. The Rangers have Michael Del Zotto, Marc Staal or Dan Girardi on the point, and centers Derek Stepan and Brandon Dubinsky.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres forward Drew Stafford has missed 12 of the last 13 games with a shoulder injury. He played Friday but left after taking a hit. He briefly skated yesterday but wasn’t able to go last night.  Tim Connolly has missed 6 games with a groin injury.

Brodeur leaves game after 2nd … 6-10 teams calling Bergeron … Coyotes looking for a goalie? Audio on Kings and Ducks

  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Marc-Andre Bergeron could get clearance to return after off-season knee surgery as early as next Tuesday. Bergeron has been contacted by 6-10 teams, no formal offers have been presented. The Sharks continue to look for a defenseman, Devin Setoguchi could be used to bring in a blueliner. The Phoenix Coyotes may look to bring a goaltender as Ilya Bryzgalov could be asking for more money than the Coyotes would like to go. Strickland wonders if the Bruins would move Tuukka Rask for a puck moving defenseman. Tim Thomas has bounced back after a sub-par season. Keith Yandle is not be shopped according to GM Don Maloney. St. Louis Blues defenseman Barret Jackman started skating, but won’t return before next week.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Martin Brodeur left last night’s game against the Maple Leafs after the 2nd period after re-aggravating his bruised elbow. Brodeur is returning to New Jersey to have it examined by the doctor who operated on his torn tendon 2 years ago. “I just tweaked it again,” Brodeur said. “I wasn’t 100 percent. Somebody came through the crease and he hit me on my stick.” The incident took place with 4:15 remaining in the 2nd, and it was obvious right after that Brodeur was in discomfort. “I’m concerned. I’m not scared of it,” Brodeur said. “One-hundred percent I don’t think it’s something really bad. Maybe I have to sit out and come back when I’m fully healed.” Brodeur hasn’t ruled out joining the team St. Louis for Saturday’s game.
  • Joe Haggerty via twitter: Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien says that Marc Savard is close to practicing with the team, won’t return before December.
  • Dave Stubbs via twitter: 8 teams scouted the Canadiens-Predators last night: Lightning, Wild, Coyotes, Avalanche, Blue Jackets, Canucks, Penguins, and Panthers.
  • John Merrigan of Blueshirt Banter: Chris Drury is getting closer to returning to the Rangers lineup. Todd White should lose his roster spot. Derek Stepan and Erik Christensen are likely lose some ice time after Drury returns.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Kyle Chipchura is not suffering post concussion symptoms anymore, and should be returning soon. Andy Sutton is targeting next week to return from thumb surgery. Joffery Lupul continues to skate. The Ducks will have to make some roster moves, and they are unsure of what they will at the moment. Sheldon Brookbank could be one player they move, he’s been a healthy scratch in favor of Luca Sbisa lately. Nick Bonino and Kyle Palmieri could be returned to the AHL.
  • ESPN 710 Audio: Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period talks “about the Kings’ depth being tested early in the season, and whether or not the streaking Ducks are due for a letdown.” He talks about how the Kings need to add a scoring left winger for the first line.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: The Toronto Maple Leafs could be loaning prospect Mikhail Stefanovich to Dimamo Minsk of the KHL. They’ve had discussions and Minsk got the OK.
  • NESN video: “Two Minutes for Instigating” Jack Edwards, Mike Milbury, and Andy Brickley. Is there any hope in Florida?

  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: TJ Oshie will be out at least 3 months after having surgery on his broken ankle yesterday. David Perron should return at some point during their road trip. Barret Jackman could return in the next 2 weeks. Ian Cole was returned to the AHL.

Maple Leafs facing decision on whether to recall Kadri or not … Lecavalier breaks hand … Peter Forsberg take 5 … Blues injury updates

  • Darren Dreger of TSN: Within the next month, the Boston Bruins should get $7.5 million in salary returning to their lineup. When Marc Savard and Marco Sturm return, the Bruins will be about $2 million over the cap. The Toronto Maple Leafs will be interested, but the Bruins might rather bury someone in the minors rather than helping out their division rivals, especially since they hold their 1st round pick. Michael Ryder and his $4 million salary, Andrew Ference and his $2.25 million cap hit are 2 options. The Maple Leafs may look to other cap challenged teams like the Devils, Flyers, Canucks and Flames, or financially challenged teams like the Coyotes, Stars, Panthers or Thrashers.
  • Darren Millard via twitter: Talk is increasing that the Maple Leafs could call up Nazem Kadri on Friday. Doug Maclean is also reporting the same thing. It’s unknown if Maclean told Millard, or vise versa, or if they have 2 different sources. David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Burke and his executive team are trying to decide if they should call up Kadri for Saturday’s game versus the Canucks. They are wrestling with “what is best for Kadri versus what is best for the Leafs”. GMs are calling Burke with trade inquiries but involve the usual “overpaid, the concussed and the undertalented,” so nothing is really going on.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons goes off on the mess Brian Burke as created for the Maple Leafs.

They are 25th best in the NHL. With the 26th best powerplay. The 27th best penalty killers. And 28th in goal scoring.

This is Burke’s team. This is his preferred coach, even if he didn’t hire him. These are mostly players he has acquired.

If this was John Ferguson Jr., there would be a metaphorical noose waiting for his neck. He was an easy target. But because it’s Burke, who has won a Stanley Cup, who has never ducked a question, who did good work in Vancouver, who came to Toronto with so much hope and hype, there is the tendency to give him the benefit of the doubt.

  • Tony Fabrizio of the Tampa Tribunes: Vincent Lecavalier will be out of the Tampa Bay Lightning lineup for awhile after breaking his hand last night in the first period. He originally injured his hand 3 weeks ago, and was told it was bad bone bruise and could be on the verge of breaking. “That’s what they told me. There’s no way to tell. It wasn’t broken, but (Thursday night), when I overextended it, I kind of felt a pop. So I guess that was the fracture.” 3 of the Lightning top 6 forwards are now out, Simon Gagne is out indefinitely, and Steve Downie is out until at least Sunday.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray had this to say after the GM meetings,

“Nobody has any (cap) room. I talked to probably only four or five teams there. I think there’s another 14 or 15 I’ve called … I’ve said, ‘do you want to do anything?’ (and the response is) ‘no, not really.’

“Nobody can really do anything right now unless it’s a dollar-for-dollar trade, and we know that doesn’t work very often.”

  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Taken from a report out of Sweden, Peter Forsberg will attempting to make another comeback. “I will make a last, last, last try,” Forsberg told the Swedish newspaper. As usual, he’ll be starting his comeback with MoDo of the Swedish Elite League.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Injury update for the St. Louis Blues. Roman Polak will still be out another 2 months. Barret Jackman is a few weeks from returning. TJ Oshie could be gone for 2-3 months. David Perron is doubtful for this weekend, could return next week. Carlo Colaiacovo could return on Monday. Brad Winchester skated yesterday but is doubtful for the weekend. Despite their injuries, Rutherford doesn’t think the Blues would be interested in Bill Guerin. The Blues don’t want to trade Ian Cole, but they have a surplus of young Dmen, and may be forced to make a move for some scoring help. Putting any of their young blueliners on the block could land them some nice offensive talent.
  • Sherri Zickefoose of the Calgary Herald: Calgary Flames forward Brett Sutter was arrested early Thursday morning in Scottsdale Arizona, and charged with assault after he allegedly punched someone in an Arizona bar.

Spezza on the PK? Another Dman out for Blues … Bouchard doesn’t get clearance

Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza will find himself on the penalty killing unit. Spezza basically hasn’t killed penalties since his AHL/OHL days.

Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The St. Louis Blues have lost another defenseman. Barret Jackman will miss about 3 weeks. Roman Polak will miss at least more 8 weeks after severing multiple tendons. Carlo Colaiacovo is also out. Nikita Nikitin could make his debut on Saturday. Cam Janssen could return this weekend. Ty Conklin will get into a game on either Saturday or Sunday.

Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Pierre-Marc Bouchard didn’t get clearance from doctors on Friday to begin playing again. Bouchard is still feeling some pressure in his head after workouts. Though disappointed, considers it part of the process in his comeback. He hasn’t played a game since Oct. 9th 2009.

Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Pekka Rinne will start for the Predators tonight against the Kings.

Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: Ed Jovanovski’s hat trick on Wednesday for the first by a defenseman in the Coyotes/Jets history, 2,415 games. Chris Osgood is 2 wins away from becoming the 10 NHL goalie to hit 400 wins.

WGR 550 Audio: Lindy Ruff postgame comments. Drew Stafford has upper body injury.

Some Players that Could be Moved … Senators looking for Dman Rental

  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Canadiens are looking to remake their roster. Tomas Vokoun, David Booth and Nathan Horton could draw some interest. The Blue Jackets are looking to move Raffi Torres, Jan Hejda, and Milan Jurcina. The Flyers, Capitals, and Blackhawks could upgrade their goaltending. The Penguins could be interested in Ray Whitney and/or Blues Dman, Barret Jackman.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators GM, Bryan Murray will be looking to add a rental defenseman. Some of their options could be Pavel Kubina, Dennis Seidenberg, Jordan Leopold, Dan Hamhuis or Brendan Bell. The Sens are still trying to sign Anton Volchenkov to a contract extension, but it might cost them Mike Komisarek dollars (5 years, $22.5 million). The Sens think that 2009 1st round pick, Jared Cowen, could be ready for the NHL next season. 2008 2nd round pick, Patrick Wiercioch, could leave the University of Denver early.

Souray out with Broken Hand, More moves coming for Leafs? Kesler-Canucks talks on hold

  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Throwing a wrench in to the Edmonton Oilers and Sheldon Souray trade plans, is Souray’s broken hand that he suffered fighting Jarome Iginla on Saturday. How long he’ll be out is still unknown, but he’s not expected back before the NHL trade deadline day on March 3rd.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke may not be finished dealing. There’s still a good chance that Alexei Ponikarovsky, Lee Stempniak, and Garnet Exelby will be traded.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN: “It’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s a question of ‘when’”. Dreger is referring to the trading of Tomas Kaberle. Burke continues to say he won’t ask Kaberle to waive his no-trade clause, but yesterday’s trades may send Kaberle up to Burke’s office saying he’s ready to go. The Leafs will be probably looking to get a top-3 or top-6 forward and a 1st round draft pick. To get the top 3 or top 6 forward they want, I don’t think they will be able to pull off that type of deal until after the season. I don’t think teams that think they have a shot this year, would want to trade a top forward during their run.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Tampa GM Brian Lawton is rejecting reports that if Jeffrey Vinik buys the team, that Vincent Lecavalier will be traded.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Contract negotiations between the Vancouver Canucks and Ryan Kesler have been put on hold until after the season. They have reached an impasse and don’t want it to become an in-season distraction. They are roughly a $1 million apart, Kesler’s camp feel he’s worth $5 million, the Canucks think it’s closer to $4 million.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal:
    • Teams looking for help on the blueline may come calling for Mathieu Schneider, and to a lesser extent, Chris Chelios.
    • The Penguins need someone to play along side Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, but they also need some defensive help. They could use a player like Barret Jackman but he’s probably not available.
    • 38 year old and recent healthy scratch, Slava Kozlov, will most likely be made available by the Atlanta Thrashers.
    • Matheson thinks that the Penguins will eventually trade Malkin, making Crosby and Staal their 1-2 centers. For Malkin he thinks they could get a front line winger, top defenseman, forward prospect, and a 1st and 2nd round pick.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings will get Johan Franzen back next week after being out since the 3rd game of the season. Feb. 9th against the St. Louis Blues is the target date. GM Ken Holland will have to make a move or two to get under the salary cap.
  • AP on Arizona Republic: Phoenix Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall will be out indefinitely with a torn ACL, and will have to undergo surgery. This is a big blow to the Coyotes, as he was leading the Coyotes in goals this season with 18.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: John-Michael Liles was a healthy scratch for the 3rd time this season, and it has been no secret that he’s available for trade. The problem is his salary cap number is $4.1 million, and he has 2 years left on his contract after this year.
