Staal to skate with AHL team … Lombardi could play this weekend … Notes on Komisarek, Rundblad, Brunnstrom, Jackman, Foster and Stalberg
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 30th, 2011
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers defenseman Marc Staal will skate with Rangers AHL team in Connecticut today. Staal has been suffering from intermittent headaches this summer, stemming from a Jan. 22nd concussion after taking a hit from his brother. It’s still not known if he’ll be able to join the Rangers in Europe for their season opener, or in their 2nd game.
- Lance Hornby and Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: It’s looking like Matthew Lombardi will get into an exhibition game this weekend.
“If I’m feeling 100% and confident, there’s a good chance I could play,” Lombardi said of facing the Detroit Red Wings in the coming home-and-home pre-season games. “But if we’re not sure and maybe things aren’t going as well, then we’ll make a decision. I don’t think it’s a negative either way. The progress has been great (far ahead of off-season projections). Whether I get in this week or on the next little while (Toronto opens the regular season on Oct. 6), it’s great.”
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek is in better shape this year, and may have cemented his spot in the top 6. Koshan mentions there has been speculation from the outside that Komisarek and his $4.5 million salary could be sent to the Marlies. (Problem is it sounds like he has a no-movement and limited trade clause, so he would probably have to agree to be sent down, which he wouldn’t do.)
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: David Rundblad is close to making the Senators, but if he doesn’t, he has made noise about heading back to Sweden for the season. Defenseman Erik Karlsson can relate and had this to say:
“It’s up to (Rundblad) and management to see how close he is to making the team and if it’s worth it for him to go down there or to go back to Sweden and come back next year. If you want to make the team, you’ve got to stay here.”
“If you go home, you’ve got to wait until next year to make the team and even then you may have to go down (to the AHL) anyways,” said Karlsson. “It’s just a personal thing — what’s best for you and what you think is best for you.”
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland on Fabian Brunnstrom:
“Right now, he looks like he’s playing his way into a contract. We’ll determine if he’s played his way onto the roster. There’s no rush to do anything now, so we’ll address the situation on Monday. But he has stated a pretty darn good case for a contract and for the roster, especially considering the injury to Jan Mursak.”
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blues defenseman Barrett Jackman is entering the final year of his 4 year deal. Neither side is ready to talk contract extension, but both sides think he belongs in St. Louis.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ducks defenseman Kurtis Foster skated for the first time since having surgery 10 days ago.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Blackhawks forward Viktor Stalberg will be out 3 weeks.

Free agent news and rumors involving: Realignment, Penguins, Yandle, Canucks, Predators and Canadiens … Could Canadiens block a Stamkos to Leafs move?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 23rd, 2011
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Gary Bettman presented a major realignment proposal to the board of governors for the 2012-13 season. It involved cutting the divisions down to 4, and possibly moving the Red Wings and Blue Jackets to the Eastern Conference. It is still in the discussion stages. It would be a balanced schedule with home-and-home’s against teams outside their division. Top 4 teams in each division make the playoffs, 1st round is divisional play, then re-seed for conference play. In each conference, 1 division would have 8 teams and the other 7. One league executive, “Nobody is happy with the current format so I would expect something like this is going to be adopted.”
- Will DePaoi of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: If the Penguins don’t bring Tyler Kennedy back, and don’t come to terms with Jaromir Jagr, Radim Vrbata could be an option if the price and length are right. He’s coming off a 3 year, $9 million deal, which might mean he’d want more than the Pens could offer.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Strickland looks at some ‘what if’s’ involving the Leafs, Stamkos and the Canadiens. The Lightning won’t let Steven Stamkos to go over a few million bucks if some team puts in an offer sheet. Strickland wonders if the Canadiens would try to block the Maple Leafs attempt to acquire Stamkos (through an offer sheet if Burke is being pressured by ownership to sign Stamkos) by trading for Vinny Lecavalier? The Canadiens would have send Scott Gomez plus others. “Montreal knows if Toronto gets Stamkos, the balance of power immediately shifts.”
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Sources are saying that Keith Yandle won’t sign before July 1st, and won’t sign before at least one of Drew Doughty or Shea Weber get a deal done. The Coyotes can’t afford to lose Yandle. His salary wasn’t high enough last year for the Coyotes to offer him arbitration, so he’s open for offer sheets. LA is trying hard to lock up Doughty, some goes for Nashville and Weber. Weber may be waiting to see what moves the Predators will make to prove that they want to be a contender. It’s unlikely that the Sharks will re-sign Ian White and Ben Eager. They are working on re-signing Devin Setoguchi. The Canucks may put Keith Ballard on waivers and send him to the minors, as they are attempting to re-sign both Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff. Roman Hamrlik expect to get a contract offer from the Canadiens by July 1st. The Florida Panthers are about $30 million below the salary floor, and may have to take on some bad contracts as long as they come with some draft picks. Maybe Ballard could head to Florida. The Blues may look to move Barrett Jackman who’s in the last year of his contract and could be looking for something in the $5 million range. Rob Niedermayer could be dangle to Blues who are looking for an experience player or 2.
- Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: Duhatschek offers up a bunch of questions. Could the Flames find someone to take Jay Bouwmeester? Might look good in Columbus. Would Rangers look to move Marian Gaborik to free up money for Brad Richards? Would the Senators be interested in Gaborik? Would the Coyotes be interested in Evgeni Nabokov?
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein thinks there is a less than 50% chance that the Kings move one of their goalies at the draft. He believes that Jonathan Bernier will be in play at some point.
-
Will DePaoli via twitter: Jagr’s agent will likely meet up with Pens GM Ray Shero at the draft. Mario is expected to get in touch with Jagr at some point. Rob Rossi via twitter: Jagr really wants to play for the Pens.
Barrett Jackman, Ben Eager, Brad Richards, Calgary Flames, Christian Ehrhoff, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Devin Setoguchi, Drew Doughty, Evgeni Nabokov, Florida Panthers, Ian White, Jaromir Jag, Jay Bouwmeester, Jonathan Bernier, Keith Ballard, Keith Yandle, Kevin Bieksa, Los Angeles Kings, Marian Gaborik, Marian Hossa, Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, NHL Realignment, Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Radim Vrbata, Rob Niedermayer, Roman Hamrlik, San Jose Sharks, Shea Weber, St. Louis Blues, Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tyler Kennedy, Vancouver Canucks
Mitchell to wait until after the weekend … Little signing soon … Savard not being traded?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 21st, 2010
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Willie Mitchell won’t make a decision on where he’ll sign until after the weekend. Canucks, Sharks, Kings and Capitals are still in it.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Sources are telling Dreger that Marc Savard won’t be traded, though he’s seen a few rumors that say otherwise.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Blues Barrett Jackman and Eric Brewer may have been offered to the Capitals at some point, but the Capitals may not have wanted them, or they didn’t like the return. Rutherford couldn’t see the Blues trading David Backes for Tomas Kaberle, even though they could use a player like Kaberle.
- Dave Fuller of the Toronto Sun: It’s most likely going to be awkward for Tomas Kaberle and the Maple Leafs this season. Burke probably won’t have to ask Kaberle to waive his no trade clause, Kaberle, his agent, and father know the situation. Kaberle loves Toronto but must know that it’s over. There are a few problems though facing Burke and the Leafs. The team continues to miss the playoffs, the Kessel trade still gets at the fans and media, and the offense needs to improve. Burke needs/wants to get equal value of Kaberle whenever he’s able to trade him. Burke is having trouble getting what he wants while Kaberle is a year away from being a UFA. Money then becomes an issue if he’s looking for more than the $4.25 million he’s currently making.
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: According to Bryan Little, he and the Thrashers could have a deal done soon.
- Chirs Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers are close to re-signing Little, and Niclas Bergfors is also at the top of their priority list. Defenseman Andrei Zubarev is also close to re-signing, possibly in the next few days.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The sale of the Dallas Stars won’t be finalized until early September at the earliest. The final price is not known, Forbes was reporting between $275 and $300 million.
Andrei Zubarev, Atlanta Thrashers, Barrett Jackman, Bryan Little, Dallas Stars, David Backes, Eric Brewer, Los Angeles Kings, Marc Savard, Niclas Bergfors, San Jose Sharks, Tomas Kaberle, Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals, Willie Mitchell
Devils Not Talking to Ilya Yet … Flyer Injury Updates and the Goalie Situation … Gonchar Still in Penguins Plans
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on March 31st, 2010
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: There hasn’t been a lot of negotiations between the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk. The Devils have a track record of waiting to late on re-signing some of their key UFAs. Kovalchuk turned down $10 million a year from Atlanta, but would Lou go that high? Everson thinks they should be making an offer before he possibly bolts for the Rangers (I don’t see how they’d fit his salary in) or Russia (he better not for my keeper fantasy teams sake). I can see the Blues making a run at him if he opts for free agency.
- Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: Jeff Carter could be back in the Flyers lineup before the end of the regular season. Their 4th backup goalie, Johan Backluns is still day-to-day with a groin injury. Michael Leighton has started skating (out with high ankle sprain) but won’t be ready until the start of the playoffs at the earliest. Ray Emery will be undergoing bone graff surgery on his leg and hip tomorrow, which will hopefully save his career.
- Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: The Flyers goaltending situation is in flux this season, and the off-season will bring plenty of different decisions for the team. Ray Emery’s career could be over. Michael Leighton is a UFA. Brian Boucher has 1 year left on his contract. Johan Backlund is 28, unproven, and a UFA at seasons end. The Flyers will most likely talk to the Canadiens about Carey Price, but what would the cost be? Other Flyer free agents are Dan Carcillo, Arron Asham, Darroll Powe, Braydon Coburn, Ryan Parent and Lucas Krajicek.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins signing of Kris Letang yesterday shouldn’t affect Sergei Gonchar re-signing with the Penguins. “This doesn’t affect Sergei at all,” Shero said of the Letang deal. “This is part of our plan, to sign Kris Letang. I’m hoping we can have Sergei back and, hopefully, after the season we can continue those discussions. [Gonchar] has been a fantastic player here for five years, and, hopefully, we’ll have him for more.” Talks between Gonchar’s agent and Shero will resume after the season. The Penguins won’t have a ton of money, so Gonchar will not get the same amount as he would if he explored the free agent market.
- Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The St. Louis Blues may look at making some changes to their blueline this off-season. The Blues may look at moving Eric Brewer (1 year, $4.5 million left) and Barrett Jackman (2 years, $7.5 million left). Carlo Colaiacovo and Mike Weaver are UFAs, and Darryl Sydor could retire.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Both Sergei Gonchar and Evgeni Malkin practiced yesterday, with Gonchar more likely to play tonight. They will take the morning skate to see how it goes, then make a decision from there.
- Robyn Norwood of the LA Times: Ryan Getzlaf (sprained left ankle) and Jonas Hiller (back spasms) will miss tonight’s game against the Avalanche.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: The Boston Bruins have signed 2008 1st round pick (16th overall), Joe Colbourne to a 3 year entry level contract. Colbourne will report to the AHL Providence Bruins. It is reportedly worth $787,500 base with bonuses that could make it $1.1 million.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs will be one of eleven teams that will be wearing a new jersey design next year. Anaheim, Calgary, Columbus, Dallas, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Anaheim Ducks, Barrett Jackman, Boston Bruins, Eric Brewer, Evgeni Malkin, Ilya Kovalchuk, Jeff Carter, Joe Colbourne, Jonas Hiller, Michael Leighton, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Ray Emery, Ryan Getzlaf, Sergei Gonchar, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs

All Panthers Available … Lightning to be Buyers … Wings Need to Make Moves … Do the Blues and or Sell
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 12th, 2010
12:29 pm: Darren Dreger of TSN: The Kings still have interest in Ray Whitney, but things have quieted down. The Hurricanes believe they can get a 1st round pick and a prospect for him. Whitney would have his no-trade for a 2 year extension.
11:54 am: Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers might have to take back $1 million salary to move Ethan Moreau and his $2 million salary. They might have to include a draft pick to move him. Andrew Cogliano and Coyotes Peter Mueller’s names have been tied together.
11:27 am: TSN: The Senators have given GM Bryan Murray a 1 year contract extension. Murray told the media that the Senators won’t be trading UFA Anton Volchenkov, and that they have made a contract offer to him.
9:19 am:
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers GM, Randy Sexton, has said that no player is off limits. He hasn’t talked to anyone about waiving their no-trade/no-movement clauses yet. It’s being reported that Tomas Vokoun will not waive his no trade clause.
- Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Blues are still unsure if they are going to stay pat or make some moves. Would anyone be interested in Brad Boyes who has 2 years at $4 million? Paul Kariya, Keith Tkachuk, Eric Brewer and Barret Jackman have no-trade clauses.
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Lightning GM, Brian Lawton, thinks they’ll be buyers this year. The Lightning could use a puck moving Dman, a scoring winger, and a 3rd-4th line grinder.
- Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: The Wings need to clear at least $1.2 in cap space as Andreas Lilja is ready to return. Holland could move Brad May, Derek Meech and Brett Lebda, or he could look at moving Jason Williams and his $1.5 million cap number.
- Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Teams that have shown interest in Andy Sutton: Calgary, Chicago, Colorado, New Jersey, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington. Teams that might be interested in Dwayne Roloson: Chicago, Colorado, Ottawa, Philadelphia, and Washington.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Alexei Ponikarovsky knows his time as a Maple Leaf could be coming to an end. “Yeah, I’m prepared,” Ponikarovsky said. “You are always ready for something to happen. I know that. If management decides to move me, I will respect than and move on.”
Alexei Ponikarovsky, Andreas Lilja, Andrew Cogliano, Anton Volchenkov, Barrett Jackman, Brad Boyes, Brad May, Brett Lebda, Carolina Hurricanes, Derek Meech, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Eric Brewer, Ethan Moreau, Florida Panthers, Jason Williams, Keith Tkachuk, Los Angeles Kings, Paul Kariya, Peter Mueller, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, Tomas Vokoun, Toronto Maple Leafs
