- Toni Ginnetti of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane still has his cast on his left wrist, but is sure he’ll be ready for the season opener.
‘‘It’s been a long time, and I’m anxious to start the season,’’ Kane said Saturday as he and four teammates took part in Blackhawks Day at U.S. Cellular Field. ‘‘I think I’ll be ready right away. I think once I get this [cast] off, I’ll be able to do pretty much anything. I practiced with the guys the other day, just trying to keep up with skating. I think just strengthening it will be the only thing.’
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: With the Bruins training camp approaching and with no contract for Brad Marchand, the Bruins are sniffing around to see what his trade value is. “For those doubting the Bruins shopping Marchand. Don’t.” Garrioch doesn’t think the gap is insurmoutable but the Bruins may want to see what they can get for him after 1 good year.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: The Bruins and David Krejci had started contract extension talks. Krejci should be the teams number 1 center and is entering the final year of his 3 year, $11.25 million deal. He could see a deal similar to Patrice Bergeron’s 3 year, $15 million deal.
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: The Vancouver Canucks will have a spot in their top 6 open due to Ryan Kesler’s offseason hip surgery and with Mason Raymond out still with his fractured vertebrae. Cody Hodgson, Chris Higgins, Marco Sturm and Bill Sweatt will be vying for a spot.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Cooper lists 5 prospects Predators fans should watch: Chet Prickard, Ryan Ellis, Craig Smith, Roman Josi and Austin Watson.
- Katie Carrrera of the Washington Post: Though the Capitals have 7 defenseman on 1-way contracts, not including Tom Poti, prospect Dmitry Orlov may push those ahead of him on the depth chart. Other Capitals prospects to watch are forward Cody Eakin, Mattias Sjogren and Stanislav Galiev.

Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Phoenix Coyotes forward Viktor Tikhonov has requested a trade according to his father, and 15 teams are interested.
Scott Burnside via twitter: Coyotes GM Don Malony says there is no truth to Tikhonov requesting a trade.
Andy Strickland via twitter: St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong spoke with Bill Sweatt in effort to bring the free agent forward to St. Louis.
The Hockey News via twitter: An NHL executive said the rule changes that are the likeliest to be approved are: 1. Modified icing 2. Shallower nets 3. 3-3 OT and 4. No line change on offsides.
Lyle ‘Spector’ Richardson of FoxSports: The length of contracts wanted by teams and remaining restricted free agents is making it harder for them to come to terms. Bobby Ryan is looking for 3 years, Ducks want 5. The Stars are offering 2 years to James Neal, he’d like a longer deal (and probably more money than the $2.5 a season they were offering). Carey Price is after 2 years, the Canadiens offered 5.
Mitchell and Bieksa rumors … Could Chara get 10 years? Blues interested in Sweatt

- Dan Murphy via twitter: Willie Mitchell has worked out for the Kings, Sharks, and Canucks. Capitals next. No confirmation on LA offer.
- Dan Murphy via twitter: No hometown discount for Mitchell and the Canucks, especially if the Kings may be offering a 2 year deal.
- Dan Murphy via twitter: Canucks GM Mike Gillis would like to keep Mitchell, and he’d like to stay, but he may not get the best deal from Vancouver.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika is asked about the possibility of the Stars going after Kevin Bieksa. Bieksa will make $3.75 million this season, and the Canucks are close to the cap and may not want to take much salary back. The Stars are on a tight internal budget and it might not fit well, plus he’d on the last year of his deal. They would have up a good young prospect for him.
- Sports-Express: Alexander Shapiro is reporting that the Devils have offered Ilya Kovalchuk a contract for over 10 years. It could clear up in the next few days.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: The Kovalchuk contract rejection (and other investigations) could impact the contract extension for Zdeno Chara. The 33-year old Chara will be a free agent after this season, and given his dedication to fitness, it wouldn’t be a shock if he were able to sign a 10-year contract and play until he’s 43. A 10-year deal could be cap friendly with not a huge drop off at the end. Would the NHL go for it? The 2 sides have talked, and would like to get something done before the season, but it isn’t a necessity. The Flyers, Sharks and Capitals could be interested in Antti Niemi.

- Will DePaoli via twitter: As of mid yesterday afternoon, Penguins hadn’t connected Bill Sweatt.

Kaberle D-Day … Canucks have offer for Bieksa … 4-5 teams interested in Mitchell

Back from a weekend of camping, catching up on things, some quick rumor hits for this afternoon. Kaberle deadline at midnight.
- TSN: Burke As of Sunday Morning, “If these offers are all we get…he’s staying put,”
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: “I’d say there are three or four legitimate offers we needed to discuss,” Burke told the Toronto Sun. “There’s nothing worth taking — yet. If we end up with Kaberle (whose no-trade clause expires at midnight) that’s fine with me.” Tonight is also the deadline for the Leafs to sign Bill Sweatt before he becomes a UFA. Burke pulled their offer off the table weeks ago, and according to his agent, Sweatt never said no to the deal.
- Mark Spector via twitter: Burke talking players/prospects, not top-6 for Kaberle.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Joe Nieuwendyk says the Stars are not trying to trade for Kaberle today.
- Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets could still be in on Kaberle.
- Eric Stephen of the OC Register: The Ducks aren’t in on Kaberle.
- NHL Sources Say via twitter: Sharks have offered Derek Joslin and a 1st to Canucks for Kevin Bieksa. Not in on Kaberle.
- Dan Murphy (Sportsnet) via twitter: Willie Mitchell seen in LA with ‘Kings brass’.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Canucks still in on Willie Mitchell. LA and 3 other clubs interested.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Rumor that Sharks might offer LW Jamie McGinn or C Logan Couture for Bieksa. Ribeiro has been offered to every team in the league. Would have to offer more than Ribeiro for Kaberle. Tampa doesn’t want to trade LWer Ryan Malone, a player Burke may covet. Marc Savard hurt by all the rumors this summer. The Panthers, Capitals, Flyers, and Sharks are believed to have some interest in Antti Niemi.
- Daniel Tolenskyvia twitter: Stars have 3 key RFAs still unsigned, ownership uncertainty, so they are probably not trade candidates unless it’s a salary dump. (They’ve been looking to shed Mike Ribeiro and his $5 million salary through 2012-13).
5 days left for Kaberle … Kariya next for Ducks? Savard may waive ‘no-movement’ now

- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Kovalchuk ruling will make is even more difficult for Brian Burke to trade Tomas Kaberle (unless the Devils and Kovalchuk have another deal close to being done). Sure other teams are interested, but 2 teams in on Kovalchuk, could also be front-runners for Kaberle, the Kings and Devils. Kaberle has made it be known in the past that he’d rather be in the Eastern Conference, Western teams may not offer up as much. The Sharks, Blues, Stars have some interest in Kaberle, as do the Bruins and Lightning. Burke has said he won’t trade Kaberle to the highest bidder, a deal has to get him exactly what he wants. If they don’t trade him, the Leafs could look to signing him to an extension, he’d probably be looking somewhere along Phil Kessell money, $5.4 million.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Leafs have 5 days to trade Kaberle. The Leafs are looking for a top forward in return, but it’s unknown if teams will re-visit Kovalchuk instead of looking at Kaberle. “The situation as this week goes on is no different than other weeks,” Curran said (Kaberle’s agent). “The player is owned by the Leafs and the only way we’d be aware of a change is if we were provided permission to talk to a team or if maybe the Leafs were interested in talking about a contract extension.”

- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray all but confirmed their interest in Paul Kariya during a conference call. “Teemu obviously knows Paul very well so that was a good source to go to. I don’t know if Paul’s decided if he’s going to play again or not. That remains to be seen. We need the answer to that question first.” If they were to offer Kariya a contract, it would be at a lower base salary plus bonuses, something similar to Mike Modano’s.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Marc Savard never waived his ‘no-movement’ clause as reported earlier this summer. Though, if he was asked now “he probably would” as he’s been unhappy with all the trade rumors.
- Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times: The Ducks want Ryan for 5 years, Ryan wants less. “We’re going to try something different,” Murray said of the Ryan talks. “And that’s all I’m going to say.”
- George Malik of MLive: The signing of Ruslan Salei by the Red Wings basically eliminates Andreas Lilja from any of their plans.
- Scott Norton (Norton Sports) via twitter: His client, Bill Sweatt, will sign a BIG contract by the end of August. Sweatt was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Kris Versteeg deal, but he was unable to come to terms with them before the signing deadline, he’s now a UFA.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Toronto offered Sweatt that maximum amount allowed. Burke blamed Norton for the failed negotiations. “I believe a more experienced agent would have got this done,” he said. The Leafs should be signing Jerry D’Amigo to a 3-year entry level deal shortly.

- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: According to one of Elliott’s sources, “he’s 98% sure” that Ilya Kovalchuk and the Los Angeles Kings will get a deal done, either side will not comment on it. (For the love of God please get this over with). Some of the stumbling blocks have been how Kovalchuk will be payed during the potential lockout season of 2012-13, if he’ll get a no-trade or no-movement clause, and if there is clause to give him veto on a trade, or selecting a number teams he’d consider joining.
- Dave Fuller of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke has pulled the Maple Leafs offer to Bill Sweatt off the table. The Leafs acquired Sweatt in the Kris Versteeg deal. The Leafs have/had until August 15th to sign him to an entry level deal or he would become an unrestricted free agent. The Leafs are close to the maximum of 50 player contracts. I would think Burke will try to shop Sweatt around, maybe adding a draft pick or putting him in a trade package.
- Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Doug Weight will be back with the New York Islanders next season, but they are in no rush to get the deal done. The Isles are below the salary cap floor, and could use Weight’s bonus laden contract to reach the minimum.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Lee Stempniak scored 28 goals last season, 2nd most amoung free agents, but still finds himself without a contract. Stempniak and his agent are still talking to teams, but it’s been a slow process. He and the Coyotes have a mutual interest in each other, and at the right price, the Coyotes would like to have him back.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBCsports: (worth a read) He writes about the Kovalchuk situation, how it’s not a ‘ripe’ market, why some draft picks fall, and his 30 thoughts.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: An NHL source is saying that the Dallas Stars do not have an agreement to be sold to Canadian Oilman, Bill Gallacher. Ken Campbell of The Hocky News reported yesterday that there was a deal.
- Dan Rosen via Twitter: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock on Mike Modano,”I look forward to him signing. I think that’s inevitable. I think that’s what is going to happen.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Alexei Yashin’s agent said that the New York Islanders are always interested in him.
Maple Leafs acquire Kris Versteeg in 5 player deal

TSN: The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Kris Versteeg and the rights to Bill Sweatt from the Chicago Blackhawks for Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico, and Philippe Paradis.
Versteeg has 101 points in 170 games, 44 goals and 57 assists.
Sweatt was a 2nd round pick in 2007, 38th overall. He just finished his 4th season at Colorado College where he recored 109 points in 143 games, 46 goals and 63 assists.
Stalberg had 9 goals and 5 assists in 40 games during his rookie season last year.
Paradis was acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes last year for Jiri Tlusty and was the 27th overall pick in 2009.
