- Andrew Gross via twitter: NY Rangers forward Brian Boyle to file for arbitration, some goes for Brandon Dubinsky, and most likely for Ryan Callahan. Dubinsky will file, but they are hopeful a contract can get done before their hearing.
- Jim Jamieson via twitter: Jannik Hansen has filed for salary arbitration.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Jamie Langenbrunner’s agent said this morning that a few teams are interested and he’s mulling offers.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Maple Leafs offered Brad Richards a 6 year deal worth $42 million.
- Michael Traikos of the National Post: Brian Burke on free agency,
“We were in on most of the free agents that signed,” said Burke. “We were aware of what they were getting, we made offers on a number of them. The term that was given to multiple players, the salaries that were paid to multiple players just made no sense to us at all. And we have cash and cap space. That doesn’t mean it’s sensible to spend it on marginal players. It makes no sense.”
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The market for Tomas Kaberle according to one NHL source is “limited” and “Not like he wanted.” The Bruins still hold some interest, as do Nashville and Minnesota.

- Joey Johnston of the Tampa Tribune: Brad Richards never wanted to leave Tampa, and would love to return.
“I don’t know what they’re thinking as an organization,” said Richards, 31, who has played for the Dallas Stars since the Lightning shipped him away a few hours before the 2008 trade deadline. “If they’re going to talk to me, I’d definitely be interested.”
“Obviously, fitting in with Tampa wouldn’t be an issue because of my history here,” Richards said. “In this salary-cap world, you have to be aware of each organization’s dynamics. Maybe you couldn’t get top dollar (in Tampa) that you might get somewhere else, but you consider other things.
“I’ve got friends and people I play golf with who constantly hammer me about coming back to Tampa. Even if I tried, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. So yes, it’s there. I’d love to see it progress. But what’s going to happen? Who knows?”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars asked Brad Richards if he would waive his no trade clause, but he said no at the advice of his agent.
“He asked in late May, and it was not a situation that was good for us, and so we said no,” Morris said of Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk. “He hasn’t asked again, but he understands that we would have to be aware of the situation and it would have to be a situation that would be one where we can see some benefit.”
The teams interested in Richards (Leafs, Rangers, Kings, possibly the Sabres and Blue Jackets ) don’t have to deal with salary cap issues. With the Flyers acquiring Bryzgalov with the hope of signing him, they will need the time before July 1st to make some other moves to fit him in under the cap.
- Scott Bordow of the Arizona Republic: It’s clear that Ilya Bryzgalov didn’t want to return to the Coyotes. He knew they wouldn’t be able to afford the $7 million he wants. With their payroll likely to be around $50 million next year, if they gave Bryzgalov big money they wouldn’t be able to re-sign some of their free agents, including Keith Yandle. Coyotes GM Don Maloney has talked about adding a goalie through trade or free agency. Marty Turco could be a stop gap goalie for them.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract demands with the Phoenix Coyotes were off the charts according to a source.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: If the Flyers are able to come to terms with Ilya Bryzgalov they might have to deal Matt Carle or Jeff Carter, and possibly not re-signing Ville Leino.
“We still have intentions of trying to re-sign Ville . . . but you can only do so much,” Holmgren said. “We’re trying to have the best team available. We’ll see what we can do.”
Bryzgalov is reportedly looking for a 4-5 year deal worth at least $5 million. The Flyers currently have 18 players signed for almost $59 million for next year.
- Chris Johnston in the Globe and Mail: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is open to trading the 1st overall pick in this year’s draft. He has had discussions with some teams about a possible trade.
“I’ve had a few calls (from) people kicking the tires of how they can help me make the Oilers a better team,” Tambellini said Wednesday after the NHL’s GMs meeting. “For me to move the No. 1 pick it would have to be obviously something exceptional. Because this is a huge building block again for us.
“These couple years here are exactly the time that we have to put pieces in place that are going to be part of the Oilers success for a long time. It would have to be something quite sweet.”
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers are planning on buying out the last season of Chris Drury’s contract. Buying Drury out will save the team $3.3 million against the cap this year, $1.6 million next year. They also are likely to buy out Wojtek Wolski, saving another $3.3 million next year, $666,667 in 2012-12. The Rangers have 7 restricted free agents, most notably Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky.
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Free agent Andrew Ladd is a top priority of Winnipeg’s new GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. “Andrew’s going to be one of my first phone calls,” new GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said, Wednesday. “He is a big, big piece of this franchise.”
- Adam L Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said there are no deals imminent with Chris Campoli, Michael Frolik, Viktor Stalberg, and Troy Brouwer. Bowman also added that he’s OK with going into the season with Corey Crawford and Alexander Salak in net. He also expects trade talks to heat up after the Stanley Cup.
- Chris Johnston in the Globe and Mail: Senators GM Bryan Murray is getting closer to making a decision on their new coach. “I just have to have a second interview with two or three of them and then make a decision.” Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk hopes to have his new coach soon. “It’s going well, we’ve met some impressive candidates,” said Nieuwendyk. “Ideally, I’d like to have it done before the draft. But certainly before free agency (opens July 1).” Wild GM Chuck Fletcher is thinking along the same lines as Nieuwendyk. “In a perfect world, you have guy in case you make a trade at the draft or for free agency he may have insight into a player,” said Fletcher. “He might have a player he absolutely doesn’t like or a style of player that he prefers. So if you’re filling out a certain role on your third or fourth line — let’s be honest, if the coach has a strong opinion on something I’d rather go with that player.”

- Roger Hensley of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Jeremy Rutherford notes that until the Blues are sold or new investors are brought in, they can’t afford a “legitimate” free agent goal scorer. With the free agent crop a little week, Blues fans shouldn’t expect them to be as active as they may like. Dan O’Neill doesn’t think a goal scorer is the Blues biggest off-season need. Andy Strickland thinks the Blues could explore the trade market. They would have to shed some salary if they were to take on a player like Paul Stastny.
- Larry Brooks of USA Today: Brad Richards will likely be looking for a long term deal at $7+ million a season, which may be more than the Rangers want to do. Richards may take less to return to Tampa. The Rangers could look at Jason Spezza who has 3 years at a $7 million cap hit, though he has a no-trade clause and the Sens may want too much in return. Stephen Weiss will also draw the Rangers interest. The Rangers were interested in Patrick Sharp last year, but he may not be available and/or would require a lot. Brandon Dubinsky wants a multi-year deal at $4.5 million per season.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The scouting department for the Columbus Blues Jackets is likely to be completely reconfigured after the draft at the end of the month. Most of their scouts contracts expire at the end of the month, and their contracts haven’t been renewed. If the Blues Jackets are going to trade their 8th overall pick at this year’s draft, don’t rule out the Flyers as an interested partner. Both GM’s have talked on and off since early last year.
- Chuck Gormley of the Delco Times: Gormley thinks the Flyers should go after Tim Thomas again this off-season. Over a year ago the Bruins wanted Jeff Carter in return for Thomas. Both teams don’t have a lot of free cap space. The Flyers could send Matt Carle and his $3.4 million salary but it would take more. They don’t have a 1st or 2nd round pick this year. Gormley thinks Carle and Kris Versteeg could get the deal done.
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Could the Tampa Bay Lightning fit Brad Richards in even though they need to re-sign RFA Steven Stamkos and possibly UFA Eric Brewer? The Lightning have $38.37 million tied up in 11 players and buyouts. Free agents they may want to re-sign are Sean Bergenheim, Teddy Purcell, Dwayne Roloson and Mike Smith. Yzerman could also make some trades to free up some salary. If Simon Gagne would take a nice pay cut from the $5.25 million he made last season, they may be more willing to re-sign him. If they don’t re-sign Gagne, they could use that money towards Richards.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: If the dollar amount and term get out of hand for Brad Richards, Stephen Weiss could be plan B for the NY Rangers. The Red Wings could be an option for Richards if he’s interested in a short-term, cap friendly number. The Rangers, Kings and Leafs will likely be offering more.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Herald: According to Maple Leafs source, they were in on Tim Erixon trade talks with the Flames before he was traded to the NY Rangers. Francis thinks the Sharks should go after UFA Kevin Bieksa. Bieksa is “most apt” to take a hometown discount to remain with the Canucks. Christian Ehrhoff will likely go after the most money, and it’s unlikely the Bruins will want to re-sign Tomas Kaberle.

- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Tom Gaglardi is getting closer owning the Dallas Stars as he’s agreed to a price and most of the terms. Gaglardi “will soon enter an exclusive negotiating period of roughly 30 days to complete the purchase of the NHL team and a 50-per-cent share of American Airlines Center. The last hurdle, according to a source familiar with the sale who requested anonymity because the deal is not official, is taking the Stars through bankruptcy court so Gaglardi will not be hampered by any debts left by current owner Tom Hicks.” Though no one is saying what the price for the team and half-interest in the arena is, but it could be in the $250 million range.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Though it’s not official, it could be Vancouver-Nashville starting on Thrusday. San Jose-Detroit would then likely be Friday and Sunday.
- The Globe and Mail: Two of the Ducks biggest off-season questions will be if Teemu Selanne will return next year and if Jonas Hiller can get over vertigo? “I’ve got to be honest, it was so much fun this year, and that’s all I ask,” Selanne said. “It’s not about goals or points. I just want to enjoy this every day. I try to play like I left everything out there, but you can’t just win the Stanley Cup every year.” Lubomir Visnovsky was playing through a serious shoulder injury during the playoffs. GM Bob Murray added, “The decisions this summer are different than just getting players,” Murray said. “The purpose here is, can we win with this core group? That’s what I’ve got to figure out.” Selanne said that he talked to Paul Kariya, who’s fully healthy, but isn’t sure if he wants to return to an NHL that has had so many head issues this year.
- Peter Botte of the NY Daily News: Rangers center Brandon Dubinsky is an RFA and coming off a 2 year, $3.75 million deal. “I’d like to get it done as quickly as possible,” Dubinsky said Monday at the team’s practice facility in Greenburgh. “I think the Rangers want me, and I want the Rangers, so at the end of the day we might as well not waste each other’s time and draw it out as long as it was (two years ago). The sooner it’s done, the sooner I can focus on putting all my energy and efforts to this organization.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Ilya Bryzgalov won’t be suiting up for Russia at the World Championship as Evgeni Nabokov was given the #1 job, Bryzgalov didn’t want another role.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals Mike Knuble and Dennis Wideman were in full pads at yesterday mornings practice. Knuble stayed on the ice with teammates for the practice, Wideman left after 15 minutes due to feeling lightheaded. Knuble wasn’t assigned a line at practice and is still not sure when he’ll return. “There’s a fine line between coming back and helping and coming back and hurting a team,” Knuble continued. “That’s my main concern, is that you wanna come back and you don’t wanna have to worry about contributing all the time, but just not hindering what’s going on.”
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock isn’t worried about Johan Franzen’s ankle injury, even if he missed another practice earlier this week. Henrik Zetterberg has taken part in 2 practices recently.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Predators forward Martin Erat practiced with the team yesterday for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury in Game 4 versus the Ducks. Erat would have been able to go in Game 7 if the Ducks had extended the series.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Former NHLer Donald Brashear is going to give MMA a try, he has a deal to try cage-fighting in June at ‘Ringside 11′ at the Quebec Coliseum.

- Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks goalie Cory Schneider left with under 3 minutes to go in the 3rd period. He had to be helped off the ice after his leg cramped up.
“The cramps, he said, “I could feel coming on after the second and sure enough, on that penalty shot, I just extended my leg and it completely seized up. I felt bad making Lou go in cold in the third.”
Now the question will be, who will start game 7?
“Oh, if I would tell you who I’m going to play, would you believe me now?” said Vigneault, who said he didn’t actually lie, he just “went with the gut.”
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks defenseman Sami Salo lasted only 3 shifts last night with an undisclosed injury. Aaron Rome or Keith Ballard could replace him for Game 7.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers have 7 RFA’s to deal with this off-season. Forwards, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, and Brian Boyle. Defenseman Matt Gilroy and Michael Sauer and goalie Chad Johnson. They’ll likely want to bring back UFA Ruslan Fedotenko, and possibly Vinny Prospal. Alex Frolov likely won’t be back. Steve Eminger and Bryan McCabe are UFA’s on the backend. The Rangers will likely go after 31 year old Brad Richards. The Rangers wouldn’t confirm a report that coach John Tortorella signed a 3 year contract extension.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The NY Rangers summer salary cap number is at $47.6 million, with the projected cap number of next year at $62.2 million. Their cap number doesn’t include any of their 6 RFA’s (Brooks didn’t include Chad Johnson), which should about $12 million to sign the 6. If Wade Redden doens’t retire, the Rangers will be on the hook for his contract again, and can’t remove it until they waive him in training camp. Buying out the last year of Chris Drury’s contract would save them $3,333,333 in cap space this year, but would carry a $1,666,667 in 2012-13. Wojtek Wolski carries a $3.8 million next year, and if bought out, would save them $3,333,333 next year. A Sean Avery buyout would save them $1,333,334 in cap space next year. Vinny Prospal, Bryan McCabe and Steve Eminger likely won’t be offered a contract. They won’t offer Matt Gilroy a $2.1 million qualifying offer, but are expected to give him a 2 year offer worth half that.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Rossi has heard from someone close to the Penguins organization that he would expect to see Evgeni Malkin back in the Penguins lineup before Sidney Crosby. Malkin may be able to return if the Penguins get deep in to the playoff, Rossi asked that organization what deep meant, and “was told deep meant conference finals or Stanley Cup Final.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Antti Niemi will start Game 6 for the Sharks. “Nemo will play tomorrow. He is our guy,” coach Todd McLellan said Sunday after practice. “We don’t expect him to be perfect,” McLellan said of Niemi. “We expect him to be a little bit better and I think he expects that of himself.”
- Eric Stephen of the OC Register: With the Ducks eliminated from the playoffs, questions regarding whether Teemu Selanne will retire or not are already appearing. When asked late in the season, Selanne said he’d make the decision before July 1st. Selanne is coming off a 31 goal, 80 point season.

- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: A source close to the Flyers said before yesterday’s game there is a “50/50″ chance that Chris Pronger will be in the lineup Monday. After the game he said “He’s probably out Monday.” So it’s looking like a ‘must win’ would get Pronger back in the lineup. Who will be in net for the Flyers on Monday is the next big question. Laviolette pointed out that Bobrovsky has bounced back from tough games in the past. Arguments for both sides are,
For those in “Bob’s” corner: Boucher seems better suited in a relief role than Bobrovsky because of his experience. In addition, Bobrovsky has been more effective on the road than Boucher.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: From an interview with Wild owner Craig Leipold: On GM Chuck Fletcher, “He knows he has my complete and absolute confidence.” Fletcher has full control on hiring the next coach, and there is “no financial restraints when it comes to a coach.”
- Sean Leahy via twitter: “SKA & KHL Pres Medvedev claims Hitchcock & MacTavish are 2 of 4 finalists for head coach.”
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: “Brian Burke said an offer sheet for restricted free agents is not out of the question in the future.” Some RFA’s this year are, Steven Stamkos, Shea Weber, Zach Parise, Keith Yandle, Zach Bogosian. If Brad Richards doesn’t want to sign with the Leafs, would they look at the next best option, Brooks Laich of Washington? Another intriguing UFA is Ville Leino.
- Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Zwolinski looks at some possible UFA centers the Maple Leafs could look at. Brad Richards: Will either re-sign with the Stars or sign with the Rangers. Simon Gagne: more of a LWer. Tim Connolly: could fill the hole for a year or two. Jason Arnott: same as Connolly. Michal Handzus: a long shot, but how much game does he have left. Zwolinski looks at some possible trade partners. New York Rangers: RFA’s Brandon Dubinsky, Brian Boyle. Rookie Derek Stepan and Erik Christensen has 1 year left before he’s a UFA. Ottawa Senators: Jason Spezza has 3 years left and could be moved to restock the roster. Boston Bruins: David Krejci has been rumored to Toronto. Would be costly to add him, makes $3.75 million next year. Philadelphia Flyers: Jeff Carter has been linked to the Leafs in the past, he and Mike Richards are locked up long term. The Flyers have less than $500,000 in cap space for next year. A long shot. San Jose Sharks: They have to interesting centers, Joe Pavelski ($4 million) and Devin Setoguchi ($1.8 million). Both are not likely to be moved, unless they disappoint in the playoffs again. Setoguchi is an RFA this summer, Pavelski has 2 years left. New Jersey Devils: Zach Parise is a RFA this summer, can the Devils afford him.
For those in Boosh’s corner: Boucher has been the steadier goalie this season, and his experience gives the team a calming effect.

- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: From Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk,
“Nothing happened, and I’m good with that. You look at our team and we’ve played well lately and now we’re going to add Brad Richards and Nick Grossman, so we’re pleased.”
“I think Brad will hopefully be a player for us in Anaheim. Nick probably not Friday, but some time during the trip.”
“In my mind, I wasn’t going to move him unless somebody knocked our socks off with something we couldn’t refuse. We’ve said all along that we want to sign Brad, and we still feel that way. We want to sign Brad Richards to be a Dallas Star for a long period of time.”
- Eric Stephen of the OC Register: There were reports that the Ducks had acquired Zenon Konopka from the Islanders, but talks never really got off the ground as Isles GM Garth Snow wouldn’t budge from his 2nd round draft pick demands.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said they did receive offers for Joni Pitkanen but didn’t want to give up the defenseman who can play 27-28 minutes.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Panthers got some late offers on Tomas Vokoun, but were not enough.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater had heard that Matt Hunwick was almost traded back the Bruins yesterday.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Mike Green could be out of the Capitals lineup for 3 weeks.
- Terry Jones of the Edmonton Journal: “There was never anything with Ales that even came close to me considering to move my best player,” said Tambellini. “There was never anything that made me think twice about returning the call.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Stars did try to trade Brad Richards, but couldn’t get the right offer. The Kings, Rangers and Sabres were in the mix. The Stars wanted 2 roster players from the Rangers, including Brandon Dubinsky, and a pick. The Sabres wanted an impact player but got Brad Boyes late Sunday. The Sabres were also trying hard to trade Tim Connolly. The asking price for Stephen Weiss and David Booth was too high. The Capitals and Flyers did inquire about Tomas Vokoun.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Predators were looking at Oilers Ales Hemsky and Ladislav Smid. Ryan Kennedy via twitter: Kennedy was told the Preds where shopping prospects Ryan Ellis and Austin Watson.

- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Post was told that Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk told the Rangers GM Glen Sather that it would cost 3 young roster players, possibly Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Stepan for Brad Richards. The Rangers have also inquired about Bryan McCabe and his no-movement clause, his agent said “Nothing has evolved to the point where he has to make any decisions.”
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Chris Phillips still wants to stay in Ottawa and re-sign with the club. But if he doesn’t get a guarantee that he’ll get an extension by the trade deadline, he’ll have to decide if he’d waive his no-trade clause. “Now, being more involved with having to make decisions that effect the outcome is the biggest difference,” [Phillips] said. “Ultimately, I am (in control), when it comes right down to it, but it has been pretty open communication with Bryan. It’s not like we’re having a standoff and see who blinks first. We’re talking about it. Between us and them, it is a collective decision, but I guess I have the final say.”
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The Washington Capitals have shown preliminary interest in Alex Kovalev. Penguins and Lightning also interested.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: The Penguins are looking at Panthers Cory Stillman and Chris Higgins. The asking price for Higgins was higher than what the Penguins expected.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Penguins may have interest in Panthers winger Cory Stillman.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Predators may be interested in Mike Fisher. The Senators have asked Chris Phillips if he’d waive his no-trade clause, and to get back to them by the end of next week. The Canadiens and Bruins could be leading candidates for him. Ray Emery should be signing a 1 year deal with the Anaheim Ducks today or tomorrow. Interest in Francois Beauchemin and Kris Versteeg is picking up. The Bruins, Canadiens and maybe the Rangers could be interested in him. The Rangers could use a pointman like a Kaberle, Souray or McCabe. It’s likely that Marc Savard is done for the year, and the Bruins could be looking for both forwards and defense. A GM told ESPN that Hemsky and Penner are in play, but they are wanting way too much. Jaromir Jagr may consider returning the NHL next season,
“If I had a chance to join a team that has a chance to win, maybe I’d think about it,” Jagr said. “I’d like to go on a team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup or at least get into the playoffs and go far. I’d like just to help a team like that on the second or third line.”
- Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Panthers GM Dale Tallon has said he has no untouchable players, including Jacob Markstrom. He did add that he doubts that would happen. “Yeah, why not?” Tallon said. “This team hasn’t done anything in 10 years, so why wouldn’t I? It’s not like we’re a championship team. We’ve got to get better in every area.” The Panthers have 7 players who’ll be UFA’s, and they could be looking to add some more draft picks. They have 1 1st, 2 2nds, and 2 3rds so far.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Both Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner could be on the move. The LA Kings are looking for a top 6 forward. Ladislav Smid may need a change of scenery. Linus Omark is getting some interest. Would the Predators trade 2007 1st round pick Jonathan Blum for Omark? Jim Vandermeer, Jason strudwick, and Ryan Jones are UFA’s and could be moved. Matheson thinks that if the Predators offered up Ryan Ellis and a 1st rounder for Hemsky, the Oilers should listen. Also, that they should as for Wayne Simmonds and a 1st rounder for Hemsky.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers continue to monitor Sheldon Souray but don’t seem in a rush to get him from re-entry from the Oilers (he hasn’t been put on re-entry waivers yet). The Rangers have RFA’s Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Brian Boyle, Michael Sauer and Matt Gilroy to deal with, and Wade Redden’s contract, so they may be monitoring what they can afford. Bringing in a Brad Richards would be more important that adding a Souray. They may also rather trade for a rental, such as Tomas Kaberle, than taking on a contract for next season.

- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Brian Burke said “I have never spoken to Doug Wilson on that. Total fabrication.” Burke was responding to internet rumors of a possible deal with the Sharks involving Joe Thornton.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Jason Arnott has already stated he’d waive his no-trade clause, and is unsure where he’ll finish the season. “I think I have to just go out and play,” he said. “The trade deadline is coming up. I’m sure it will come quicker than normal. I just have to wait and see.”
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Coach Dan Bylsma said that Evgeni Malkin won’t play tonight but he’s traveling with the team.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Alex Edler underwent micro discectomy surgery on Monday, hopes to be back by the end of the regular season, though GM Mike Gillis said that is unlikely, as it could be 3 months to recover. Sami Salo still doesn’t know when he’ll be able to return, he’s been practicing for 5 weeks. Andrew Alberts could be back on Friday, Aaron Rome could be ready next week.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche winger David Jones will be out indefinitely with a shoulder injury that he suffered in the final game before the all-star break. Peter Forsberg’s next practice is scheduled for Wednesday.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens have about $3.5 million in cap space after the season ending injuries to Markov and Gorges. Do they go after a top 6 forward like a Richards, Arnott or Weiss? Or after a defenseman like Robyn Regehr?

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
“There hasn’t been much real talk,” Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon told ESPN.com this week. “Teams are saying ‘We’ll talk later, we’ll talk later.’ But that’s fine.”
“There’s been lots of talk going on, but it’s hard to jar anything loose right now,” Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said this week.
“Most of us have players that we would make available even right now for a trade, either because they’re underperforming and/or overpaid,” Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier told us this week. “But it’s impossible right now to get an agreement on values. We’re all hoping that we’re going to be able to just charge a cost without taking anything back, and that’s not reality. So I think, yes, we’re all sitting around to the last day or two again [before the trade deadline].”
The Maple Leafs and Senators have been trying to make trades (not with each other) for some time but haven’t had any luck. It doesn’t look like the Senators will move Erik Karlsson, Daniel Alfredsson, and Jason Spezza. The Leafs may be ready to take draft picks and prospects as ‘traditional hockey deals’ are harder to do nowadays. There’s the Tomas Kaberle and his no-trade clause question that will be brought up again. Francois Beauchemin and Kris Versteeg will continue get interest. Sheldon Souray is still available. Dustin Penner should draw some interest. Future UFA’s the Sabres have are Tim Connolly, Mike Grier, Rob Niedermayer, Craig Rivet and Steve Montador.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby has been cleared by doctors to begin light workouts. He’s been out since Jan. 5th with a mild concussion. Crosby will have to be symptom free from the workout before he’ll be able to practice with the team.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sources are saying that the Ottawa Senators are trying to move Sergei Gonchar. Gonchar has 2 year and $11 million left on his deal. The Sharks, Bruins, and Blue Jackets are teams that have shown interest in adding a defenseman. “You could deal him, but you’re going to have to take somebody back,” said one NHL insider. “It’s going to have to be a dollar-for-dollar, which means they’ll have to take someone’s big contract back. “This is going to be a really tough deal for (the Senators) to make.” Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu have been the most talked about names.

- Lisa Wallace of the Globe and Mail: Ray Emery is hoping to get a contract in the next couple of weeks, as he continues he comeback attempt. Last April he had bone grafted from his leg and inserted “into the ball of the hip.” He was on the ice in Ottawa with goaltending coach Eli Wilson. “I’m ready to go and start training in the American Hockey League and know that my body can take that kind of exertion,” Emery said. “The hockey’s not all the way there. I feel like a player at the end of the summer who needs some training and some games to get a feeling for the game again.”
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Blackhawks are looking to add another defenseman and a center. Players they might be offering as trade bait are Victor Stalberg, Jack Skille, and Nick Boynton. Defenseman that Sassone thinks they could look at are Bryan McCabe, Roman Hamrlik, Joni Pitkanen, and Chris Phillips.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: A league executive told Garrioch that teams are calling about Senators center Mike Fisher, but acknowledges that he’s not having a good year along with many other Sens. “I just don’t think they can get enough for him to warrant that kind of move,” said another executive. “That’s a drastic move and they’ve got to play (well) next year. They need to have some players.” Kings GM Dean Lombardi is looking for scoring, and even called the Rangers about Marian Gaborik. The Sharks are still looking for a defenseman and could dangle winger Devin Setoguchi, who’s a RFA at seasons end and is making $1.8 million this year. Garrioch thinks the Senators should make a pitch for Canucks goalie Cory Schneider. Sources are saying Brian Burke continues try attempt to move Francois Beauchemin and/or Mike Komisarek for younger players, and there is always Tomas Kaberle and his no-trade clause. Sharks, Bruins, Predators and Avalanche are looking for defenseman. The Panthers are looking to clean house, offering up G Tomas Vokoun, LW Cory Stillman, and RWs Radek Dvorak and Rostislav Olesz. Stephen Weiss is also being shopped and is getting interest. Philadelphia could have an interest in Tomas Vokoun.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa left the game part way through the first period after a fight with Tom Kostopoulos. Coach Vigneault said he didn’t receive a concussion, but his eye was swelling shut. The Canucks have also been without Aaron Rome who’s been out the last 4 games with a knee injury.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Peter Forsberg will take the next couple days and weeks to determine if he’ll feel good enough to return to the NHL. Yesterday he skated with injured Ryan O’Reilly and their assistant coach.
“I want to be sure this time if I am going to be good enough. I don’t know how long it’s going to take,” Forsberg said. “I’m going to try to do it as soon as possible, but I think it’s going to take some time at least.”
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins center Marc Savard had to be helped off the ice after he was hit into the boards by former Bruin Matt Hunwick.
“Marc is going to be heading back home (today),” said B’s coach Claude Julien. “He got shook up, obviously, on that hit. He’s going to be re-evaluated. We don’t have anything concrete, other than that we’re going to be cautious and send him back home to get checked out.”
- Bob McKenzie of TSN: Evgeni Nabokov has said he doesn’t want to report to the Islanders who claimed him on waivers yesterday. The Isles could suspend him and not have to pay him anything. “The Islanders could appeal to the NHL to “toll” the contract, which essentially means push it to next year. In that case, Nabokov would then “owe” the Islanders a year and Nabokov would not necessarily become a free agent on July 1.” They could look to trade him but he’d have to go through waivers for only the teams that put a claim on him. They could also just place him on full waivers without intent to trade. Nabokov also has a no-movement clause.<
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The Devils may have started Johan Hedberg against the Flyers to ‘showcase’ him to other teams.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said that GM Bryan Murray and coach Cory Clouston won’t fired before the end of the season, and that there is a plan in place to put the team back on track.
“There is no one, no one, on this planet that bleeds more than I do for this team, as a fan and as an owner,” said Melnyk. “I am more disappointed in the performance of the team than any fan could imagine. The time has come to make some of the most difficult decisions that an owner can make. Do we need a game-changer? I believe we do. I’ve lost sleep. Bryan Murray loses sleep. Cory Clouston loses sleep. Everybody who loves this team doesn’t sleep well at night.”
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ales Hemsky and Jordan Eberle have informed the NHL that they won’t be participating in the all-star game and skills competition.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Rangers Brandon Prust left after the 2nd period after blocking a shot in the foot in the 1st period. Dan Girardi also left last night’s game after hurting his ribs in a fight. The Rangers recalled Michael Del Zotto and Evgeny Grachev after the game.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Philadelphia Flyers are close to signing winger Claude Giroux to a contract extension. There is unrest in Calgary, Jarome Iginla trade rumors, coach and management issues, assistant GM Jay Feaster could take over (IMO, the Sutter’s need to go before any player decisions are made). The New Jersey Devils would like to add a defenseman. Ed Jovanovski is a UFA this year, he could be dealt or resigned, but they may not be able to do a deal with the Coyotes without the consent of potential owners Matthew Hulsizer or the True North Group, no formal discussion have taken place. The San Jose Sharks are looking for a defenseman to fill the departed Rob Blake’s minutes, they’ll likely wait till it’s closer to the trade deadline. Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson could get some interest at the trade deadline. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli will have plenty to consider at the GM meetings starting on Tuesday, as teams will be looking for deals to help them fix some of their cap issues, a chance Michael Ryder could be dealt.

- Howard Berger via twitter: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Colby Armstrong has a walking cast on his right leg, he was originally out with a finger injury.

- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers currently have 5 right-handed defensemen on the roster, and may be on the lookout to add a lefty. Sheldon Souray’s name continues to float around, but even if the Rangers could add some salary to the deal (Steve Eminger, Todd White and Derek Boogaard), Souray’s $5.4 cap hit would hurt next year’s budget when Wade Redden’s deal pops up again. The Rangers will search the waiver wire for left-handed defenseman. Vinny Prospal may require knee surgery that could end his season, possibly his career. More will known after a 2 week rest period. Brandon Dubinsky may move in the #1 center spot between Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman prospect, Simon Despres, has a good chance of at least starting the year with the club. GM Ray Shero may be looking for a #6 defenseman on the waiver wire. If they add one defenseman, it could mean that one of Ben Lovejoy, Deryk Engelland and Andrew Hutchinson could go on waivers. They are $1.2 million below the cap, and Jordan Staal could be placed on LTIR to create more room.
- Michael Russo via twitter: The Minnesota Wild have put Matt Kassian and Drew Bagnall on waivers. Basically meaning that Casey Wellman and Justin Falk have made the team.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello didn’t rule out recalling any of yesterday’s demoted players (G-Mike McKenna. D- Matt Corrente, C- Jacob Josefson, RW-Mattias Tedenby) by Friday after their cap situation becomes clearer. Lou also added that no decision has been made if Bryce Salvador will be placed on LTIR or not.
- Ben Wright via twitter: Alex Burmistrov, Anthony Stewart and Freddy Meyer all have good chance of making the Atlanta Thrashers final roster.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Peter Schaefer is still on tryout with the Vancouver Canucks, and it could be down to him and Jeff Tambellini for the final roster spot. If Schaefer gets the spot, he’ll likely get a 2-way contract worth the minimum $550,000.

- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers GM Glen Sather said he ‘shook hands’ on a deal with Lightning co-owner Len Barrie last year, that would have sent Steven Stamkos to the Rangers for 2 or 3 of Michael Del Zotto, Evgeny Grachev, Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky and Dan Girardi. When Barrie took the proposed deal to GM Brian Lawton, Lawton shot it down. Barrie, still wanting to make the deal only needed approval from the other co-owner, Oren Koules. Koules shot it down as well.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika thinks that several Dallas Stars could be moved this off-season. Possible candidates are Mike Ribeiro, Brad Richards, Matt Niskanen, Fabian Brunnstrom, and James Neal. Neal could be moved if they got a huge return. Ribeiro and Richards are tied together, in that if they can`t get Richards to sign an extension (contract expires after next season), they could move him. If they get Richards on an extension, Ribeiro could be expendable.
- Columbus Post-Dispatch: Alex Ovechkin has some advice for Nikita Filatov:
Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, left, thinks that Blue Jackets prospect Nikita Filatov, a fellow Russian, must come back to the NHL from the Continental Hockey League. “If he wants to play in the NHL, he has to see how different players step up and play,” Ovechkin said.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader writes in and asks Molinari if the Penguins can/will re-sign Matt Cooke. If Cooke will re-sign for around the same $1.2 million cap hit, they’ll definitely consider it. If not, they have Dustin Jeffrey that might be ready to step in for that role.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Tomas Vanek (lower body) and Tim Connolly (foot) are still not close to returning to practice. The Sabres must be praying that they’ll be ready for the playoffs.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The 37-year-old Daniel Alfredsson will play his 1,000th game on Thursday. Alfie is still scoring at a point-a-game pace, and GM Bryan Murray figures he still has another 3 good years left.
- Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Chris Mason steady play this season may earn him a contract extension with the Blues, and bide some time while they decide on who will be their goalie of the future. In their organization they have, Ben Bishop, Joe Fallon, and Jake Allen, but anyone of them may not be the answer they are looking for. Trading for Cory Schneider continues to be an option, but the Canucks may still want David Backes, which won’t happen. Price or Halak is another trade option, but they’d be in competition with several other teams.

- The Blackhawks have looked for available goalies around the league, but feel that it wouldn’t be an upgrade. They also don’t have a lot of cap room for this year, after the acquistion of Kim Johnsson.
- The Islanders are shopping Martin Biron, Dwayne Roloson and Andy Sutton. Roloson is 40 years old and will make $3 milllion next season ($2.5 million cap hit).
- Predators GM, David Poile, will meet with all his UFA’s during the Olympic break. If they are unable to re-sign Dan Hamhuis, they might look at trading him, despite being in a potential playoff spot.
- Dennis Seidenberg and Jordan Leopold are as good as gone from the Florida Panthers.
- The Capitals may be considering adding a goalie. GM McPhee has looked around, but their options may be limited as some teams aren’t in the selling mood. Marty Turco, Martin Biron and Jaroslav Halak could be options.
- The Rangers could be looking to do something, with Brandon Dubinsky’s name in the middle of it.
- The Bruins wouldn’t ask Tim Thomas to waive his no-movement clause until he has something in place. They’ve talked to 3 teams about Thomas.
- The Blue Jackets are shopping Raffi Torres, Jan Hejda and Milan Jurcina.
- Florida may be shopping Tomas Vokoun and his no-trade clause. Would he waive it to go to Philly?
- Florida could move Stephen Weiss to the Maple Leafs.
- Ray Whitney demanded a 2 year, $7 million contract extension from the LA Kings.
- The Oilers are trying to move Shawn Horcoff, Robert Nilsson, Sheldon Souray, Steve Staios, and Tom Gilbert.
