Afternoon rumors involving Gagne, Savard, Sharp, and a list of UFA’s
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 14th, 2010
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: The Flyers have given Simon Gagne’s agent permission to speak directly with teams, nothing yet.
Jimmy Murphy via Twitter: One GM said this morning, “As far as I know, Bruins aren’t actively shopping Savard at this moment. That has been quiet.”
JT Bourne (Puck Daddy, USA Today) via Twitter: The Islanders should be offering “mad prospects/picks” for Patrick Sharp. Isles need the talent, gives the Blackhawks the cap space, and they are in a different conference.
Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The longer the Kovalchuk saga drags on in Los Angeles, the better a Patrick Sharp trade looks.
Puck Daddy Greg Wyshynski: Titled: “Some clarity on Kovalchuk, Kings and contract demands.” Your afternoon Kovalchuk fix.
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Free Agent rumor round up from yesterday. Brendan Morrison: Has turned down one offer, and waiting on own ‘priority list’, cap issues and trade possibilities are slowing the process down. Eric Belanger: Could be top center on the market, has been told by some teams to wait, Washington and Tampa could be interested. John Madden: “evaluating the possible situations”, once Kovalchuk and Kaberle situations finished, the free agent market will open up (My guess is that he’s referring to NJ or LA as possible destinations, with NJ as the preferred destination). Darcy Tucker: Nothing would happen before the end of the month, location and chance to win are key factors. Raffi Torres: A handful of interested teams, no firm offers. Arron Asham: Getting lots of interest, and has offers, but would like a raise. Ruslan Fedotenko/Miroslav Satan: Both have interest, but teams waiting for other things to happen first. Pavol Demitra: Getting interest from KHL and NHL, and hopes to get something done soon. Mike Mottau: New Jersey is still interested. Marek Svatos: Could get a one-year deal at good value, a fit for Pittsburgh? Brian Pothier: talking with team, but hasn’t moved on anything.rci
Around the Boards: Kovalchuk, Briere and Van Riemsdyk, Penguin’s Injuries, Weight out, Giggy to Wings?

- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers fans and Fantasy owners of Ilya Kovalchuk have a smile on their face this morning, as Kovalchuk took part in yesterday’s practice. He was on a line with Antropov and Afinogenov. Kovalchuk is 95% a go for Thursday. He’s been out 3 weeks so far, original timetable was 4-6 weeks.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Both Daniel Briere and James Van Riemsdyk could be back in the lineup for Thursday’s Ottawa match-up. Ryan Parent and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen should also be back soon.
- To go along with the Ducks JS Giguere to the Maple Leafs for Vesa Toskala, Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch thinks the Red Wings might have an interest in Giguere as they are not thrilled with the tandem of Osgood and Howard so far.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The injuries keep mounting up for the Penguins, as Brooks Orpik appears to be the latest Penguin injured. Orpik left last night’s game and joining Sergei Gonchar, Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, Tyler Kennedy Max Talbot on the sidelines.
- Arthur Staple of the Newsday: Doug Weight’s upper-body-injury that he sustained on Friday will keep him out the lineup for 4-6 weeks. Kyle Okposo has been diagnosed with the H1N1 swine flu.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Some of the New Jersey Devils forwards aren’t putting up the numbers they did in past season, and the blame may be on Jacques Lemaire’s systems. Well no #*$%, Lemaire’s ‘bore-the-crap-out-of-you’ systems will negate the skills out of anyone, see ‘Marion Gaborik’ and what he’ll do this year (if healthy).
- Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Brendan Morrison’s solid play so far this season may earn him a contract extension with the Capitals.
- Jesse Rogers of ESPN: Blackhawks center David Bolland will be out 3 to 4 months following surgery on a herniated disc. This probably means that Patrick Sharp and/or Kris Versteeg trade rumors may slow down.
- From CSN Washington: Mikael Nylander has cleared waivers, and reportedly has deals in the KHL, and is ready to move on … But “We’re still exploring our options,” McPhee said. “I’d rather not elaborate right now. It is probably a better opportunity to talk about it tomorrow. I’d like to see how it goes today and then maybe we can discuss it tomorrow.”
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Coyotes GM Don Maloney plans on scouting Chris Chelios on Friday as the AHL Chicgo Wolves play San Antonio …. Peter Forsberg might decide by the end of the week if/where he’ll be playing

- The Daily Herald out of Chicago mentions that the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks GM’s might be discussing a trade. The Hawks might be looking for a Dman, while the Leafs would like to move a Dman for a scoring forward. The article mentions Tomas Kaberle and Patrick Sharp. Both have similar cap hits.
- The New Jersey Devils might be looking to add free agent and one time Devil, Brendan Morrison. The Devils still need to sign RFA, Travis Zajac, who has filed for salary arbitration.
- The Columbus Blue Jackets are looking for a puck moving defenceman. The Sharks, Leafs, and Oilers have some Dmen who might fit the bill.
